(Y/n) wanted to scream.

Despite closing her eyes in an effort to block out the world, all she could focus on at that moment were the numerous hands that kept touching her. One tightening her obi, another one applying the final touches to her make-up, and all the others hemming and hawing at her form.

She wanted to bat all of them away, but she held herself back. They were only doing their job, which was to get her ready for hers and Kyōjurō’s wedding.

“There, all done,” Mitsuki, (Y/n)’s mother, exclaimed with a relieved smile gracing her features. Her hands reached out to clasp her daughter’s right one, then proceeded to squeeze the said hand.

As if that would help warm up her chilly fingers. It helped, just not to the extent that Rengoku’s own touch could.

“You look so beautiful, (Y/n). Kyōjurō-kun won’t know what hit him when he sees you.”

Slowly, the bride opened her eyes, before letting out a quiet breath to calm her jittery nerves. Her gaze landed on her mother, before flickering towards the full body mirror resting adjacent from her.

She looked every inch of the woman that Rengoku deserved; and she couldn’t help but smile at that fact.

Gone was the rough exterior that the Slayer uniform afforded her, and in its place was a woman beautiful enough to be mistaken for a member of nobility.

She had no doubt about it: she was ready to finally be Kyōjurō’s wife.

The Flame Hashira paced in front of the torii gates in his own wedding garb. Instead of wearing his usual haori— much to his dismay— it was replaced by a plain, black one with his family’s crest embroidered into the cloth.

He thought he looked quite dashing in his montsuki haori hakama, but Uzui didn’t seem to think so.

According to the Sound Hashira, it ‘wasn’t flamboyant enough’.

Which was just fine with Rengoku, because he wanted all the focus to be on how beautiful his wife was going to be.

His wife.

(Y/n) was going to be his wife.

His heart lurched at the thought once more, and he had to tamp down the flames inside him that wanted to consume his entire being. He was that excited… and nervous.

He was starting to get restless, as it had been quite a while since he had been told to wait for her by the gates. All kinds of scenarios kept running through his head, and it was taking almost everything in him not to unsheathe his sword and go look for her.

As it was, his hands still rested on his scabbard and the hilt of his sword; ready to strike into action at any given moment.

“Stop pacing, Flame Hashira! It does not look flamboyantly graceful, at all.” Uzui snapped at his friend, which made the said Hashira stand still.

Or at least try to.

Rengoku looked like a cornered bear as he stood in one place, but it was better than having him wear out the cobblestone path with his constant pacing.

All the others waiting for (Y/n) with him let out quiet breaths of relief when he took his hands off of his sword; opting instead to clench his hands into fists and put them at his sides.

“She’ll be here soon, onii-chan,” Senjurō reassured with a bright smile, which his older brother returned with a sincere grin of his own.

“You’re right, Senjurō! (Y/n) will be here soon,” He affirmed with as much gusto as he could muster; which made his group of friends all crack smiles at his antics.

Even Giyuu had cracked the tiniest of smiles, which delighted the Flame Hashira even more.

His wedding day was supposed to be a day of joy; not only for him, but for his friends as well.

“Oh, (Y/n)-chan looks so pretty,” Kanroji Mitsuri, the Love Hashira, whispered towards Shinobu. The two women exchanged quiet giggles, before sliding their gazes towards the suddenly dumbstruck groom.

When Kyōjurō saw her from afar, he thought that (Y/n) looked ethereal in her shiromuku. And when she finally stood a few feet away from him, all that he could think about was that a goddess had come down to grace all of them with her presence.

If he thought that his heart was going to burst into flames earlier, the feeling coursing through him at that moment was incomparable to anything he had ever felt.

Kyōjurō felt like the world had ceased to exist, except for him and (Y/n).

He wanted to reach out and touch her, but held himself back in fear of messing up the intricately fastened kimono around (Y/n). He’d thought that it was going to be easy, but he was sorely mistaken. Just the way she looked was enticing him to hold his hand out and feel the silky material of hershiromuku.

And when he looked into her eyes, he swore that he had died on the spot; because there was so much love in her gaze that it was too much to take in at that given moment. It was too much love that even he thought he deserved.

He almost broke out in tears. Almost.

In fact, Rengoku had to blink rapidly to hold back the tears stinging the backs of his eyes. But he failed; as one of them escaped and rolled down his cheek.

An off-beat chuckle passed his lips at that, which (Y/n) returned with the softest of giggles.

“Do I look horrible enough to bring you to tears, Kyōjurō?” The (h/c) haired woman asked quietly. It was a highly uncharacteristic move from her, which surprised her lover himself.

But little did he know that she had only done it to cover up her own urge to cry. Not only would the ladies who did her make-up have her head, she knew that the soot-colored material they had put around her eyes would cling to her face like a second skin.

She didn’t want to spend her special day looking like a panda.

“You looked beautiful enough to reduce me to tears, my Sweet Flame,” Kyōjurō retorted with his usual jovial tone, then broke his self-imposed protocol by reaching out and running the backs of his fingers against his bride’s cheek. “You’re too radiant for words.”

“Save that for later, you two; there are children around,” Shinobu’s chime-like voice permeated through the silent air, which had the bride and groom shooting her furtive glances.

It wasn’t that their friend was wrong; but they wanted some more time to themselves.

Which wasn’t going to happen with a group as rowdy as all the Hashira.

“Come on, let’s get this over with,” (Y/n) announced with a grin, which made Kyōjurō grin brightly and belt out a resound ‘Hai’.

Of course, that one wasn’t going to pass by without some form of teasing; not when their friends and family were involved.

“Getting used to your role early, aren’t you, Rengoku?” Iguro quipped with a smirk, before crossing his arms over his chest.

Kyōjurō had no clue what the Snake Hashira had meant, but he merely laughed the teasing remark off, then steeled himself for the start of his married life.

“Have I told you how beautiful you look in that tomesode?” Rengoku’s voice carried over the silent night; ensnaring (Y/n)’s senses and consuming her entirety in nothing but him.

Their hands swayed gently between their bodies, as they traversed the path that led to the sole hot spring resort in their village. It was well into the night— as the festivities after their wedding ceremony went overboard, which also resulted in all the adult Hashira— minus Giyuu— to lay face down somewhere in the Rengoku residence.

The newlywed couple wanted their privacy, so it was the best option they could think of; since (Y/n)’s family was staying at her home.

“Only about a hundred times, goshujin-sama,” The (h/c) haired woman answered with a flustered smile, which then escalated into a grin when she saw her husband’s equally flustered yet ecstatic expression. “You just like it because it’s decorated with flames.”

“Which was really the point. You’ve finally been ‘dyed’ by your husband’s colors-”

(Y/n) quirked an eyebrow at that, before cutting him off entirely. “I will not start yelling ‘wasshoi’ with you when we eat sweet potatoes, Kyōjurō.”

A hearty laugh cut through the peaceful ambiance but, instead of reprimanding her lover for disturbing the peace, (Y/n) found herself admiring his profile. Truly, Kyōjurō’s features were nothing to sneer at.

She wondered how she had gotten married to such a handsome man; one who was close to perfect.

“That’s one of the things, but I’m happier because I can finally call you my wife. Rengoku (Y/n), wife of the Flame Hashira, and the future mother of seven children.” Kyōjurō laughed at his own quip, which his wife rolled her eyes at.

With a blush, the young woman answered, “How about: Rengoku (Y/n), Snow Hashira, wife of Rengoku Kyōjurō, and future mother of three children? How does that sound to you?”

“SNOW HASHIRA? You’re finally going to accept Oyakata-sama’s offer?”

(Y/n) nodded. “I want to, but I want my husband’s opinion on it first.”

“Your husband,” Kyōjurō chuckled, as a blush settled on his cheeks. He looked like an adorable schoolboy with that cheesy grin on his face, with his eyes looking off to the side. As if that would keep (Y/n) from seeing how giddy she had made him. “I’m that husband.”

“If you start skipping, I’m going to leave you here.”

The jovial expression never left Rengoku’s face, as he stopped walking and pulled his wife to face him. HIS WIFE.

He wanted to scream that out to the heavens, but he had to wait until the morning; when he wouldn’t be a public nuisance.

And before (Y/n) could get another word in, he cupped the back of her head with his free hand, before pulling her in for a kiss. Instantly, his wife melted against him— her lips opened pliantly to his seeking tongue, and he took that as his chance to explore her mouth.

She tasted like peppermint tea, which made him sigh against her mouth. He had always loved the taste of peppermint, especially when it was on her tongue.

They stayed like that for a while, just basking in the taste and feel of each other’s mouths, until both of them had to come up for air.

Each had identical flushed cheeks and slight grins playing at their lips.

“Put your heart into it then, my Spirited Flame. I'll support you no matter what.”
