Model Minority Myth
The term “model minority” was first published in a 1965 New York Times column in which sociologist William Pettersen contrasted the “positive” example of Japanese Americans against that set by African Americans, whom he labeled a “problem minority.” According to critical scholarship, the “model minority” myth erases the historical and contemporary effects of systemic racism and white supremacy, obscures disparities within minoritized communities, renders them “forever foreign,” stifles interracial solidarity, and increases the potential of racial violence and prejudice.

Not your fucking model minority. Not your scapegoat. Not your fetish. Blame the rich and powerful, not immigrants. Resent corporations, not minorities. #Repost @juliakestnerdesigns with @get_repost ・・・ My heart is heavy. Discrimination, racist attacks, and xenophobia against Asian Americans have recently been on the rise. My heart hurts seeing all of the hate crimes and violence perpetrated towards the AAPI community. Anti-racism must include Asian Americans. We cannot allow white supremacy to pit us against each other or let “oppression Olympics” distract us from the real problem at hand. We’re not each other’s enemy white supremacy is. ⁣ We can fight for liberation without turning to anti-Black rhetoric such as heavier policing or “tough on crime” justice. This kind of thinking does not bring us closer to our shared goal of equality and liberation. All it does is take us further away from our common goal of fighting against systemic injustices, and forces us to play into the us-versus-them mentality that pits us against each other. We are all victims of the same oppressive system. Just as our suffering is interconnected, so is our liberation. Our equality is irrevocably contingent on the liberation of ALL oppressed communities. Now more than ever, we need cross-community solidarity to fight for our collective healing and liberation. ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 What we can do: -Amplify AAPI voices and stories -Speak out against all forms of racism and systemic injustice -Educate ourselves on the model minority myth, and how it was designed to create a wedge between Asians and other people of color in America -Learn about AAPI history -Donate to organizations committed to anti-racism To learn more, follow @stopaapihate @hateisavirus @ricefeed @teachandtransform @michellekimkim @jocekittyllama . . . . . #hateisavirus #stopaapihate #modelminoritymyth #standforasians #artistsagainstracism #racismisavirus #iamnotavirus #antiracism #dismantleracism #dismantlewhitesupremacy #insolidarity #fightforequality #endracism #westandtogether #intersectionalfeminsim #artmatters #activism #artforsocialchange #stopracism #stopthehate #equalityforall #istandwithyou #unitedwestand #nojusticenopeace #blacklivesmatter #blm #solidarity #digitalportrait #asianartists https://www.instagram.com/p/CNTthx4rjZW/?igshid=1k4tpatujqhix

I just finished my second of three books that came highly recommended for teachers. This author’s style of narrative, autoethnographic really connected with me as she weaves her lived experiences with concrete advisement and solutions. I liked this book a lot. I was chuffed to see a chapter about model minorities, and Asian Americans. If you are interested at all in doing some introspection and shinning the light on your biases, I suggest this read to you. #soyouwanttotalkaboutrace #ijeomaoluo #racism #modelminority #modelminoritymyth #biases #lookatyourself #solutions #iread #read #summerreading #realandnecessary #booktalk #readthisbook (at Esquimalt, British Columbia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDksMbbjPm0/?igshid=11gu191qblsnz

The anti-blackness in the Indian community has been too loud for too long. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m creating a playlist of short videos on YouTube related to recognizing anti-blackness in the Indian community, steps to take to be antiracist, and our history as Indians and Asian-Americans. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My first video is on the Model Minority Myth and how it hurts us all. In this 6-minute video, I share a brief history of how the ‘model minority’ was created and why it’s so important as Asians to not fall into the trap it’s created for us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Click the link in my bio or search BetiGrewUp on YouTube to start watching! . . . . #modelminority #modelminoritymyth #asianamerican #abcdgen #desi #southasiansforblacklives #southasians4blacklives #asiansforblacklives #asiansforblacklivesmatter #asiansforblm #betigrewup https://www.instagram.com/p/CBk23oHgz3N/?igshid=jjpkhkct61x8

For the last post of #asianpacificislanderheritagemonth - #asians4blacklives inspired by @mrchuckd_pe I have been inspired by black leaders my whole life, 1st #MalcomX had a big influence on me when I was young and in high school, read his book many times and watched the movie at least 5-10 times. And to just recently find out about #YuriKochiyama (about 3 years ago, but it finally stuck in my head about a year ago) and to see the photos of them together and how she was his close personal aid in his layer years and she was sitting front row and was at his side on the stage when he took his last breaths, makes me proud of Japanese Americans history. More than being a #NoNoBoy in a #internmentcamp more than the #442nd because those are stories a lot of Americans know. These are the forgotten, untold and buried stories. A few years ago I read #BobbySeales book #seizethetime the story of the #BlackPantherParty and #HueyPNewton and come to find out #RichardAoki a #JapaneseAmerican from Oakland supplied them with their first guns, also see his photo in the hashtag #yellowperilsupportsblackpower The powers that be try and erase our history of solidarity. Black leaders were working very closely w/ Asian leaders in the 60s and 70s. They use the divide control and conquer tactic driving a wedge between minority communities. At first #yellowperil and now the #modelminoritymyth Lets come together and work together as one to fight the oppressors. #allthepowertoallthepeople #✊🏿✊🏾✊✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻 #fightthepower #fighththepowersthatbe #asianpacificamericanheritagemonth #asiansforblacklives (at Moiliili, Hawaii) https://www.instagram.com/p/CA4xQWalK3M/?igshid=jhsosmqcjbey

#Repost @courtneyahndesign ・・・ I’m excited to share this guide with all of you ✨ In wake of the current public health crisis, it’s more important than ever to rally support for our AAPI communities and not fall into dangerous, racist rhetoric (“Chinese virus” 🙄)that isolates and dehumanizes us. As a Korean American, I can speak volumes to the type of racist microagressions I've dealt with my whole life, the long enduring history of oppression AAPI communities have faced, and the systemic hardships and experiences that result from this, but I can't emphasize enough the enormous impact the model minority myth not only has on AAPI, but the devastating effects it has had on the oppression of our fellow minorities. The perceived success of our communities is still actively being used as a scapegoat to discredit the systemic oppression of BIPOC! Oppression is nuanced and unique to every minority group, and we have to shift that blame from each other rightfully back to the oppressors because we are all in this together and we have an obligation to fight with and stand as allies for ALL minority communities 👊🏽👊🏿👊👊🏼 〰️ #modelminority #modelminoritymyth #notyourmodelminority #aapi #asianamerican #systemicracism #whiteprivilege #checkyourprivilege #racialequality https://www.instagram.com/p/B-wSf_kADia/?igshid=9n2u3ds3s7yk

When the paltry rewards of being a Model Minority no longer mattered, I finally saw clearly how little I settled for in the past, and how much I debased myself in exchange for scraps of acknowledgement. No one should have to move across the world and to be among faces that look like her own to understand the feeling of being treated like an individual.

Many times I am either to tired or too busy to read many of the great l, and informal books out there. I have a physical library of books at home, and as a sociologist I like to stay on type of social issue past, and present. So I have taken up using #audiblebooks. As a book addict, I love a good book. This particular book I have started listening too is called The Color of Success: Asian Americans and the origins of of the Model Minority. This book talks about the #modelminoritymyth, and how it first came about. Something I has hipped to a few years ago. Check it out. (at Quincy, Massachusetts)
