To shave or not to shave 🪒 @byrdie ✏️ “Women are expected to be hairless, but men aren't held to the same standards. In elementary school, I began feeling anxiety when I started seeing more noticeable hair appear on my shins. I spent hours late at night plucking out my armpit hair because I was so scared of it getting darker. Even today, I still look in the mirror and stress about the peach fuzz that creates the shadow on my upper lip… The traceable history of women shaving dates back to the Roman empire, where women removed their hair using a combination of chemicals, pumice, and even fire. It was reported that Queen Elizabeth would pluck her facial hair daily. It is also suggested that lower-class women, such as prostitutes and courtesans, would shave their entire bodies to conform to the male idea of female perfection, as portrayed in the sculptures of the Greeks and paintings of the Europeans.  Shaving for American women did not become popular until 1915.” Read more @byrdie https://www.byrdie.com/to-shave-or-not-to-shave-5191619 (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSXfZnVHp-j/?utm_medium=tumblr

Can we be friends? 🥺 what does friendship mean to you? #nationalfriendshipday ❤️ As someone who has trust issues from my own trauma, understanding what friendship means helps me set boundaries and advocate for what I need out of relationships. It also allows me to ask the right questions to ensure that I can care for my friends in a way that makes them feel loved. COVID has really taught me to protect my energy and take special care of my inner circle — and discovering my true introverted self has helped me set boundaries too. There’s nothing wrong with social media as long as we continue to feel strong about our understanding of reality. I’ve met numerous middle schoolers in the last couple years who not only have their finsta, but a trinsta (third Instagram) for their even closer friends. Having these accounts that inform tiers of friends will carry over into our real face-to-face interactions. So, let’s take the time to understand what this really means and how it affects how we exist and take up space in social settings. Growing up on the playground, asking someone “do you want to be friends?” meant something much more tangible. It meant that once you were friends, there were playdates involved and more face-to-face interaction. In a digitized world, the vocabulary around friendship and connections is being further muddled and diminished. So, it’s important that we take the time to reflect on what friendship really means to us. I sleep at least 8 hours a night 😴 life is good. As a recovering insomniac and workaholic, I spent YEARS sleeping 2-4 hours a night, often on red eye flights for multiple consecutive nights. I don’t have too many SelfCare practices I obsess over, but my 8+ hour sleep rule is one I can never compromise on. Thinking of doing a @tigresspodcast episode on this, what do you think? https://www.instagram.com/p/CR6qUl6tak_/?utm_medium=tumblr

Fun fact: I actually wrote my Harvard application essay about my love for dance. Not about periods 👀 “As someone with anxiety and depression, I have the tendency to bottle up my feelings. Dance gave me an outlet to process and share my emotions when I didn’t have the words to vocalize them. I remember morphing my body into different shapes and talking this shared body language to tell my story… Ballet gave me structure when I needed it during my early dancing years. But hip hop gave me community and liberation from the confines of my own mind and trauma.” QUOTED from my latest piece in @asweatlife https://asweatlife.com/2021/07/hip-hop-mental-health/ (at Portland, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR1lkUEHaQU/?utm_medium=tumblr

@itsaugust’s first @vogue feature! 🥺 and I’m thrilled to have been able to work on it with @jessicadefino_, a writer I’ve been following for so long and look up to for her work holding the beauty space accountable. And honored to be mentioned alongside so many iconic #femalefounders in the #period space! #onmyperiod ❤️ Quoted: “Through her work with August, for example, Okamoto breaks the concept down into the more manageable buckets of traceability, ethical business practices, carbon neutrality, tax-free status, impact, and dignity. The first, traceability, refers to how the product is made, from materials to manufacturing. “It’s vital that consumers know exactly where and how products are produced and that companies are transparent with their supply chain,” she says. August also invests resources into third-party inspections to ensure ethical labor practices across suppliers. “We were shocked to learn about how so much of the world’s cotton is unethically sourced, often in concentration camps using forced labor,” the co-founder tells Vogue. “We knew we needed cotton to make these products, but there was absolutely no way we were going to compromise on our values in the process. We pushed our launch date back a couple times because of [sourcing], but it was a priority of ours.” The brand compensates for the carbon emitted in its production process (carbon neutrality), gives back to underserved areas of the community (impact), and covers the “tampon tax” for customers that order from any of the 30 states that still tax menstrual products as luxury items. “Having a dignified period is about remembering that their natural body process is beautiful and powerful, not shameful,” Okamoto says.” www.itsaugust.co (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRrNvGCtw7b/?utm_medium=tumblr

Over 2 million women have left the workforce since the start of the pandemic. TWO MILLION WOMEN. 😱 Even before COVID-19 our economy was not built to support women—especially women of color—and one thing is clear: Women work, but the status quo doesn’t.
@argent x @timesupnow x @linkedin are connecting job seekers with employers and centering the voices of women and those impacted to build a more equitable and sustainable economy—one that offers safe, fair, flexible, and dignified opportunities for all. Exactly one year ago, I was admitted into residential rehab for trauma/depression. I spent six weeks there doing various modes of therapy all day, every day. I’ve been working on this piece for months now, trying to put some of my reflections down on paper, and I’m so thankful and excited to share it with y’all today. Truly didn’t feel like I would make it through 2020 last year...and now I’m feeling more present and humbled by life than ever before. I hope this resonates with some of you. Especially to my young go-getters out there who might also feel the pressure to push yourself so hard you’re about to collapse. I’m still very much a work in progress — but I’m making progress, and that’s what I’m cherishing today. Lots of unlearning and learning to keep doing — and I’m looking forward to it 🥺 #mentalhealth #bpd #ptsd #depression #recoveryjourney Link in bio and here: https://www.byrdie.com/hustle-culture-essay-5191962 https://www.instagram.com/p/CRKRr6YtRSV/?utm_medium=tumblr
