The next Third Thursday — the monthly evening of art in Athens, Georgia — is scheduled for Thursday, September 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. All exhibitions are free and open to the public. This schedule and each venue’s location and hours of operation are available at 3thurs.org.
Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia
Yoga in the Galleries, 6 p.m. — Join us for a free yoga class surrounded by works of art in the galleries. Led by instructors from Five Points Yoga, this program is free and open to both beginner and experienced yogis. Sanitized mats are provided. Space is limited and spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis; tickets are available at the front desk starting at 5:15 p.m.
Student Night: “Southern/Modern,” 6 – 8 p.m. — Join the Georgia Museum of Art Student Association for refreshments, door prizes and themed activities to celebrate the latest exhibitions, including “Southern/Modern.” Student Night is generously sponsored by the UGA Parents Leadership Council.

“Southern/Modern” — This exhibition is the first project to survey comprehensively the rich array of paintings and works on paper created in the American South during the first half of the 20th century. “Where Shadows Cross: Photography by Jim Fiscus” — Iconic image maker Jim Fiscus produces layered single-frame stories that comment on human experience. 
“Sky Hopinka: Lore” — Images of friends and landscapes are cut, fragmented and reassembled on an overhead projector as hands guide their shape and construction in this video work stemming from Hollis Frampton’s 1971 experimental film “Nostalgia.”
“In Dialogue: Power Couple: Pierre and Louise Daura in Paris” — Portraits of Joaquín Torres-García’s daughters by Pierre Daura and Louise Heron Blair.
“Decade of Tradition: Highlights from the Larry D. and Brenda A. Thompson Collection” — Selections from Larry and Brenda Thompson’s gift of works by African American artists.
“Power and Piety in 17th-Century Spanish Art” — Works by premiere Spanish baroque painters such as Francisco de Zurbarán, Bartolomé Murillo, Pedro Orrente and others, on loan from Bob Jones University Museum & Gallery.

6 – 8 p.m.: Artist-in-ATHICA sculptor Mickey Boyd hosts open studio hours for his installation in progress. Boyd’s work investigates the substructure of the contemporary built environment through replicating the forms writ large around us. In surreal facsimile constructions, he uses the same materials as those in our residential structures: dimensional lumber, drywall, insulation, found doors, and windows, calling our attention to the suffocating sameness that pervades our market-driven society.

“The Fables, by Kristin Roberts” — Athens artist Kristin Roberts illustrates Aesop’s Fables, inspired by their combination of personal accountability, the laws of nature, and the tenuous border between life and death.

“Paul Pfeiffer: Red Green Blue” — Often located in the heart of a city or campus, the sports stadium has the capacity to fortify national, regional or community-based models of identity. Inside, the spectator is bombarded with carefully orchestrated stimuli, immersed in a multi-sensory experience intended to incite an emotional response. In “Red Green Blue,” Paul Pfeiffer edits audio and visual recordings of the UGA Redcoat Marching Band, examining the mechanics of the performance through close-up footage of band members and their directors during and between periods of play.

“Serendipity” — Works painted by Jim Barsness and Jesse Blalock in tandem. It was serendipity when Jim Barsness and Jesse Blalock met the first time, and when Jesse’s Mustang broke down in front of Jim’s studio, it was fate. They started painting together, sharing their processes, styles and their joy of art and creating.
Third Thursday was established in 2012 to encourage attendance at Athens’ established art venues through coordination and co-promotion by the organizing entities.

Conclusion
Is the line between fiction and nonfiction really as clear as the media suggests? It seems to me that if a work of fiction can evoke non-fiction, it must have the power to alert people; When fiction reaches the boundary of nonfiction, it is success. Because the fictional reality is still a kind of reality, and the life of the photography work lies in this seemingly fictional reality. Just as in Yusman's photographs, multiple real negatives are superimposed on each other like a fictional illusion. It is clear that the photographic author's life is clear, or, the reason why the work gives a realistic reading experience as if he were there is that the creator of the photography must have been there, no matter what kind of "being there" he is. Such a type of photography work, which has both fictional beauty and non-fictional quality, is of course the most ideal state. To tell the truth, I've always admired photography with life as the backdrop. For if the photography is separated from the real world, the meaning of the work will disappear. Even science fiction photography, which is almost purely fictional, is bound to abide by various theories of the universe to which it must adhere.

ASSISTED LIVING IN SARASOTA
Sarasota is a city in Florida’s southwest region, just south of Tampa. It is well-known for its link to the Ringling Brothers Circus, and it is a fascinating sight to visit with various attractions and vacation options.

THE JOHN & MABLE RINGLING MUSEUM OF ART
The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art is located in Sarasota on Bay Shore Road. It’s named after the co-founder of the Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Circus, which you’ve probably heard of — yep, that Barnum! The museum is unique and one-of-a-kind, which is why it is one of Sarasota’s most popular attractions.
The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art first opened in 1927 and was initially made up of artwork donated by its eponymous figures. It is now maintained by Florida State University and is regarded as the state’s primary art museum. Over 10,000 works of art, ranging from paintings to photography, sculptures to prints, are displayed in 21 galleries, each dedicated to a distinct location and style. There’s even a gallery devoted to ancient treasures from Cyprus!
Classical architecture and art — both copies and genuine originals — from many different eras can be found within the museum. Of course, this covers the Renaissance, but it also contains Greek and Roman works. When you walk in, you won’t feel like you’re in modern-day Florida — you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into another century! It’s a lot of fun, and 45-minute tours are available.
BIG CAT HABITAT AND GULF COAST SANCTUARY
The Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary is located on Palmer Boulevard in Sarasota. Kay Rosaire founded it in 1987, and it became a non-profit organization in 2005. Now, it is one of Sarasota’s top ten tourist attractions. The sanctuary’s primary purpose, as its name implies, is to rescue exotic cats and provide them with necessary treatment.
Birds, chimps, and bears are among the other species cared for here. There are three big habitats on the site, some of which are indoor and some are outdoor. Native vegetation and swimming ponds help recreate the animals’ natural environments.
Visitors to the Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary are also educated about wildlife preservation through shows, demonstrations, and discussions — most often with giant cats and birds! There’s also a petting zoo, which is ideal for bringing children because they can feed llamas and goats. Feeding the lions, bears, and tigers for a modest price is also an option for the adventurous!
MOTE MARINE LABORATORY AND AQUARIUM
The Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium is located on City Island in Sarasota, Florida, along Ken Thompson Parkway. It was first established in 1955 as the Cape Haze Marine Laboratory, and it used that name until 1967 as a tribute to William and Lenore R. Mote and William’s sister, Betty Mote Rose.
The Sarasota location’s laboratory focuses on estuarine and marine research. It lets visitors explore an estuary, a body of water in which the stream meets the tide. An aquarium is also open to the public, with more than 100 species of marine animals, both local and international.
Rays, jellyfish, turtles, otters, manatees, sea horses, eels, sharks, and a slew of other creatures can be found in the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium. The shark tank is enormous, holding over 100,000 gallons of water! Shark feeding time is popular here and is one of the many things that attract tourists; the feedings are narrated.
If you’re searching for something to keep your kids occupied while you’re here, there are several educational programs available, including summer camps. Seasonal exhibits include the yearly reptile exhibition, which features crocodiles and alligators!
Expect to pay a lot for entrance, but if it’s something you can afford, it’ll be well worth it. There is free parking, and you can also get there by taking public transportation and walking a short distance.
CA’ D’ZAN MANSION
When it comes to tourist attractions in Sarasota, Florida, the Ca’ d’Zan Mansion is one of the best. It was the winter residence of John and Mable Ringling, who we previously mentioned. After it was finished in 1926 following a two-year construction period, the circus owner and his wife would remain here.
The mansion is five floors tall and contains 36,000 square feet of living area. It is located on the waterfront and was designed to resemble Venice, one of the married couple’s favorite destinations. It’s built in the Mediterranean Revival style, and it looks a lot like the Doge’s Palace in Venice. The Ca’ d’Zan Mansion is open to the public regularly for tours.
If you go on one, you’ll be amazed by the 16th-century Spanish tile roof, the game room, the marble terrace with views of Sarasota Bay, the domed ceiling of an 82-foot-tall tower, a crystal chandelier, and an Aeolian organ! It’s a beautiful look into the couple’s opulent lifestyles.
MARIE SELBY BOTANICAL GARDENS
The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens are located on South Palm Avenue near Hudson Bayou, on the outskirts of Sarasota Bay. It’s one of the most popular attractions in Sarasota, and for a good reason! The gardens are enormous, spanning seven acres, and each one is steeped in history.
Marie and William Selby originally owned the land where the gardens are now located. They are the proud owners of the world’s largest and most diverse collection of a category of flowering plants known as bromeliads. The gardens are home to over 6,000 distinct plant species spread across 20 ecosystems, with 20,000 plants thriving. These include mangroves, bamboo lands, succulent habitats, and other habitats.
A research library, a herbarium, and various greenhouses are among the resources accessible at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. This Florida destination’s most popular portions are the Rainforest Garden and Butterfly Garden. ‘The Bitter Years’ was the title of a seminal exhibition held in 1962 at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, curated by Edward Steichen, and 2012 marks its 50th anniversary. The show featured 209 images by photographers who worked under the aegis of the US Farm Security Administration (FSA) in 1935–41 as part of Roosevelt’s New Deal. The Great Depression of the 1930s defined a generation in modern American history and was still a vivid memory in 1962. The FSA, set up to combat rural poverty, included an ambitious photography project that launched many photographic careers, most notably those of Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange. The exhibition featured their work as well as that of ten other FSA photographers, including Ben Shahn, Carl Mydans and Arthur Rothstein. Their images are among the most remarkable in documentary photography – testimonies of a people in crisis, hit by the full force of economic turmoil and the effects of drought and dust storms. The Bitter Years celebrates some of the most iconic photographs ofthe 20th century and, since no proper catalogue was produced at the time, provides a whole new insight into Steichen’s impact on the history of documentary photography.

Women in photography

In 1955, the Museum of Modern Art put on what may very well be the most famous photography survey of all time, “The Family of Man.” It assembled a who’s who of 20th century talents—Henri Cartier-Bresson, Roy DeCarava, Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Garry Winogrand, and August Sander. The show’s demographics, however, left something to be desired: of the 251 artists included, fewer than 40 were women.
A new show opening today at the Metropolitan Museum of Art continues recent efforts to reinsert women into the history of photography. Organized by Andrea Nelson and Mia Fineman with Virginia McBride, “The New Woman Behind the Camera” features 120 women photographers working during the 20th century. Its focus is not only Western artists who are already well-known, such as Dorothea Lange and Claude Cahun, but also under-recognized artists from other parts of the world whose work has been influential.
Below, a look at five under-recognized artists included in the Met show, which is slated to travel to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. after its run in New York.

When Consuelo Kanaga died in 1978, the New York Times called her “one of the foremost women photographers of her time.” By 1993, however, when the Brooklyn Museum devoted a retrospective to her, Kanaga’s reputation had faded to a point where curator Barbara Head Millstein took to the Times’ Opinions page to write that “her transcendent images have never received the acclaim they deserve.” Even today, Kanaga is nowhere as near as famous as some of the artists she counted as friends, among them Imogen Cunningham, Alfred Stieglitz, and Tina Modotti. This is due partly to Kanaga’s disposition—she wasn’t one for self-promotion—and partly to the nature of her work: her understated portraits of Black Americans did little to announce themselves as the great, empathetic images that they are.Kanaga took up photography at a time when its artistic merits were still subject to debate. At age 21, she began writing for the San Francisco Chronicle, spending time in the paper’s photo department, where she learned darkroom techniques. In 1932, she fell in with a circle of Bay Area photographers known as Group f/64, whose members included Cunningham, Ansel Adams, and Dorothea Lange. While not officially a part of the group, Kanaga, like its other members, was interested in a kind of photography that celebrated quotidian moments and everyday people—a sharp departure from the day’s reigning style, Pictorialism, which prioritized rigorous compositions over documents of everyday life.In the years that followed, Kanaga began creating her signature portraits of Black sitters—an unusual move at the time for a white photographer. She Is a Tree of Life to Them (1950), her most famous work, features a Black mother with her two children pictured against a concrete wall. (It was featured in Edward Steichen’s famed 1954 MoMA show “The Family of Man.”) The photograph exemplifies Kanaga’s approach, highlighting her subjects’ piercing gazes and using light in subtle elegant ways. It was the inner lives of her subjects that Kanaga sought to capture. “Most people try to be striking to catch the eye,” she once said. “I think the thing is not to catch the eye but catch the spirit.”
To an untrained eye, Karimeh Abbud’s photographs may not have read as art—and in fact, they were often made for commercial purposes first. But, with her studio portraiture, the Palestinian photographer charted a path that others have followed in the decades since she died in 1940.For historians, her work remains important because it marks a milestone: Abbud is believed to be the first woman photographer in Palestine, and possibly even one of the first woman photographers in the Arabic world. Yet her work remains little-known, and it did not even become the subject of a museum exhibition until 2017, when Darat al Funun, an art space in Ammann, Jordan, staged a survey based on works from the collection of Ahmad Mrowat, a major collector of Abbud’s work.Born in Bethlehem in 1893, Abbud became a photographer in the 1920s, turning her lens on the women and children around her. Later on, she would go on to open studios in various locations, including Jerusalem and Nazareth, and create portraits that pictured her sitters as they were. In a decisive break from the ethnological portraiture by Europeans that had long been dominant in the region, Abbud created images “of normality, of people appearing at their best, but within a middle-class context,” as scholar Issam Nassar has written. She chose not to hide her gender, and she even advertised herself as a “Lady Photographer.”
Homai Vyarawalla, India’s first female photojournalist, often took a matter-of-fact approach to her work: asked why she took up photography, she’d say, “It was just a job.” Yet the stunning pictures she took of India during a transitional period in the middle of the 20th century make it hard to imagine she didn’t have a more poetic intent.With her striking shots, Vyarawalla bore witness to the leadership of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, whom she befriended after he noticed her taking pictures, and the activism of Mahatma Gandhi. Anytime there was an important event taking place in the country, she could be found on the scene, often wearing a sari or a salwar (she declined to dress in Western garb as an assertion of her Indian national identity). In the process, she became widely known in India and respected as one of the great recorders of the country’s history.At the start of her career, though, her name was hardly known. This was, in part, because she was publishing photos under the name of her husband, Manekshaw Jamshetji Vyarawalla. Gradually, she began demanding recognition for her work, and when she got a job with the British Information Service in the ’40s, she demanded payment of a rupee per shot. In the years leading up to Vyarawalla’s death in 2012, filmmaker Sabeena Gadihoke helped revive interest in her work.
Once dubbed the “Queen of Leica,” Ilse Bing was one of the top photographers working in Europe during the pre–World War II era. She got that nickname from the tiny Leica camera she toted around with her, which she used to capture off-kilter images of modernity that often emphasize diagonal compositions. Through her lens, puddles on city streets, shadows thrown across ledges, and crowds traversing plazas become bracing visions of modernity’s changes to society, and its fast pace.
Bing initially intended to become an art historian, and her first photographic forays were done as part of her doctoral thesis during the ’20s. After Mart Stam, an architect aligned with the Neue Sachlichkeit movement in Germany, hired Bing to document his angular creations, she fell in with a circle of avant-garde artists in Frankfurt. She relocated to Paris in 1930 and rose to fame, getting commercial commissions from Harper’s Bazaar and fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli.
In 1940, Bing and her husband, both of whom were Jewish, were expelled from occupied Paris and interned for nine months. With the help of a fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar, they both got visas and ended up in New York, where Bing remained for much of her career. Her work was fundamentally altered by the trauma of World War II, and in the ’50s, she gave up photography altogether. Her focus instead became poetry, which she considered “snapshots without a camera.”

A modernist photographer whose output spanned photojournalism and more experimental work, Lola Álvarez Bravo once said that with her dynamic black-and-white pictures, she aimed to showcase “the life I found before me.” And what a life that was. Her images of Mexico, where she was born and based, are not simply documents, but something more—expressive renderings of people and the places they inhabit, filled with dramatic shadows and sharp diagonals that jut across her images. Occasionally, they also had an overt political context, such as in her images of Indigenous and poor Mexicans.
Within the U.S., Álvarez Bravo has been less celebrated than her onetime husband Manuel, who was also a photographer. (The two separated in 1934 and divorced in 1949.) The two ran in the same avant-garde circles, which included Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Frida Kahlo (who memorably appeared before her camera a number of times). At the center of the art scene in Mexico in the first half of the 20th century, Álvarez Bravo’s work was well-known among her peers, and she even acted as a gallerist for some of them.
It wasn’t until the past two decades that U.S. scholars began to take stock of her work, however. After a previously unknown trove of her prints was discovered in 2007, there has been renewed attention paid to her photographs, in particular her images that border on abstraction. At a 2018–19 survey at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St. Louis, for example, there was a focus on works such as Sexo vegetal (Plant Sex, ca. 1948), in which a close-up shot of a maguey plant comes to appear like genitalia. Álvarez Bravo called non-commerical works such as these “mis fotos, mi arte.”

Beginning in our introductory gallery, two idealized portraits of African rulers made centuries apart greet visitors.
These portraits respect cultural norms about how a ruler is expected to look, often combining distinctive individual features with visual concepts such as divinity or rulership.

Kuba ndop (commissioned royal portraits) represent the concept of leadership and contain a ruler’s life essence.The hand on this drum identifies this ruler as one of three Kuba nyim (kings): Mbó Mbóosh, Mishé miShyááng máMbúl, and Kot áNée.
Other royal indicators include his long-brimmed headdress, cowrie belt and armbands, and calm expression.

Ancient Egyptian sculptures use hieroglyphic text to identify subjects by name, but a blank back pillar suggests this sculpture is unfinished. 
Although this figure is unidentified, his youth, crown, and Hellenistic hair and face suggest that he is Caesarion, son of Cleopatra VII and Julius Caesar.

Warriors hold a valued place in many societies across time and place. Warriors’ memorials reflect what societies think these figures “should” look like, often representing ideals rather than individuals.

Wooden stelae (left/middle) memorializing powerful Konso warriors in Ethiopia were grouped with additional sculptures of weapons, slain animals, and defeated foes. The stelae memorialize specific male Konso ancestors, emphasizing his individual deeds as well as his connection to shared experiences and values.
The stone Huastec warrior figure (right) from Mexico is adorned with fearsome symbols of death such as the human skulls on his skirt and bead-and-human-heart necklace. Huastec viewers who saw these elements knew he was likely Micoatl-Camaxtle, the god of hunting and warfare.

Nestled amongst our European paintings and sculpture collection are three Ethiopian processional crosses. 
Beginning in the medieval period, the Christian Ethiopian Kingdom and numerous Italian states enjoyed a lively relationship that included travel and exchange of religious art and ideas between the two regions.

Dame Magdalene Anyango N. Odundo fires her dramatic pots multiple times to create glossy, iridescent surfaces. 
Born in Kenya, she learned ceramics in Britain (where she lives today), citing pottery traditions from multiple other countries as her primary influences, drawing ideas from Nigerian Gwari ceramics, Native American Pueblo pottery, European Modernism, and even ancient Cycladic art.

Kang Suk Young uses porcelain, a medium that is traditional in his home country of Korea, but he creates forms using slip casting, a method he learned in France. He pulls the porcelain from its mold when it is still somewhat soft and twists and bends it to create something that is lively and anthropomorphic.

Ranti Bam has created a very complex object, contrasting a heavy clay slab with delicate painting, and a rough surface with areas of shiny glaze. 
The painted surface references woodgrain, but in an unlikely color of dark pink that gives the vessel its name, Antafi, a word that the artist derived from the Greek word for “rose” (triantafyllo).

Although these artists participate in the multinational field of contemporary ceramics, their work has until now been categorized by the museum according to their place of birth.
Grouping these ceramics highlights how museums (including Brooklyn!) tend to leave artists  born outside of Europe and the U.S. out of conversations about contemporary art.

This sculpture is linked to a Kongo fertility-focused women’s cult that flourished during the height of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. During this period, women both raised children and took on customarily male agricultural roles. Made into an nkisi (power figure), it underscores how Kongo women supported future generations during a time of widespread social upheaval and trauma.

The Mwaash aMbooy mask personifies Wóót, mythical ancestor of the D.R. Congo’s Kuba peoples. Kings performed this mask during initiations and funerals. One performance tells the story of Wóót’s role in the Kuba kingdom's founding and his ties to its first ruler.

Gilbert Stuart’s larger-than-lifesize portrait of George Washington reminds a young republic of the soldier who led them to victory and the statesman who stepped down from power for the country to flourish for some.

Both works rely on extensive symbolism and create enduring images of “founding fathers.” 
While Stuart’s portrait turned an individual into an icon, the Kuba artist’s Wóót mask connected a current ruler to his dynastic past.

Beauford Delaney began including African artworks in a series of compositions from the 1940s as he deepened his engagement with the African American cultural movement called the Harlem Renaissance.

During a 43-year Hollywood career, which spanned the development of the motion picture medium as a modern American art, Walter Elias Disney, a modern Aesop, established himself and his product as a genuine part of Americana.
David Low, the late British political cartoonist, called Disney "the most significant figure in graphic arts since Leonardo." A pioneer and innovator, and the possessor of one of the most fertile imaginations the world has ever known, Walt Disney, along with members of his staff, received more than 950 honors and citations from throughout the world, including 48 Academy Awards® and 7 Emmys® in his lifetime. Walt Disney's personal awards included honorary degrees from Harvard, Yale, the University of Southern California, and UCLA; the Presidential Medal of Freedom; France's Legion of Honor and Officer d'Academie decorations; Thailand's Order of the Crown; Brazil's Order of the Southern Cross; Mexico's Order of the Aztec Eagle; and the Showman of the World Award from the National Association of Theatre Owners.
The creator of Mickey Mouse of Mickey Mouse and founder of Disneyland and Walt Disney World was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 5, 1901. His father, Elias Disney, was an Irish-Canadian. His mother, Flora Call Disney, was of German-American descent. Walt was one of five children, four boys and a girl.
Raised on a farm near Marceline, Missouri, Walt early became interested in drawing, selling his first sketches to neighbors when he was only seven years old. At McKinley High School in Chicago, Disney divided his attention between drawing and photography, contributing both to the school paper. At night he attended the Academy of Fine Arts.
During the fall of 1918, Disney attempted to enlist for military service. Rejected because he was only 16 years of age, Walt joined the Red Cross and was sent overseas, where he spent a year driving an ambulance and chauffeuring Red Cross officials. His ambulance was covered from stem to stern, not with stock camouflage, but with drawings and cartoons.
After the war, Walt returned to Kansas City, where he began his career as an advertising cartoonist. Here, in 1920, he created and marketed his first original animated cartoons, and later perfected a new method for combining live-action and animation.
In August of 1923, Walt Disney left Kansas City for Hollywood with nothing but a few drawing materials, $40 in his pocket and a completed animated and live-action film. Walt's brother Roy O. Disney was already in California, with an immense amount of sympathy and encouragement, and $250. Pooling their resources, they borrowed an additional $500 and constructed a camera stand in their uncle's garage. Soon, they received an order from New York for the first "Alice Comedy" short, and the brothers began their production operation in the rear of a Hollywood real estate office two blocks away.
On July 13, 1925, Walt married one of his first employees, Lillian Bounds, in Lewiston, Idaho. They were blessed with two daughters — Diane, married to Ron Miller, former president and chief executive officer of Walt Disney Productions; and Sharon Disney Lund, formerly a member of Disney's Board of Directors. The Millers have seven children and Mrs. Lund had three. Mrs. Lund passed away in 1993.
Mickey Mouse was created in 1928, and his talents were first used in a silent cartoon entitled Plane Crazy. However, before the cartoon could be released, sound burst upon the motion picture screen. Thus Mickey made his screen debut in Steamboat Willie, the world's first fully synchronized sound cartoon, which premiered at the Colony Theatre in New York on November 18, 1928.
Walt's drive to perfect the art of animation was endless. Technicolor® was introduced to animation during the production of his "Silly Symphonies." In 1932, the film entitled Flowers and Trees won Walt the first of his 32 personal Academy Awards®. In 1937, he released The Old Mill, the first short subject to utilize the multiplane camera technique.
On December 21 of that same year, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first full-length animated musical feature, premiered at the Carthay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles. Produced at the unheard of cost of $1,499,000 during the depths of the Great Depression, the film is still accounted as one of the great feats and imperishable monuments of the motion picture industry. During the next five years, Walt completed such other full-length animated classics as Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo and Bambi.
In 1940, construction was completed on Disney's Burbank studio, and the staff swelled to more than 1,000 artists, animators, story men and technicians.
During World War II, 94 percent of the Disney facilities were engaged in special government work including the production of training and propaganda films for the armed services, as well as health films which are still shown throughout the world by the U.S. State Department. The remainder of his efforts were devoted to the production of comedy short subjects, deemed highly essential to civilian and military morale.
Disney's 1945 feature, the musical The Three Caballeros, combined live action with the cartoon medium, a process he used successfully in such other features as Song of the South and the highly acclaimed Mary Poppins. In all, 81 features were released by the studio during his lifetime.
Walt's inquisitive mind and keen sense for education through entertainment resulted in the award-winning "True-Life Adventure" series. Through such films as The Living Desert, The Vanishing Prairie, The African Lion and White Wilderness, Disney brought fascinating insights into the world of wild animals and taught the importance of conserving our nation's outdoor heritage.
Disneyland, launched in 1955 as a fabulous $17 million Magic Kingdom, soon increased its investment tenfold and entertained, by its fourth decade, more than 400 million people, including presidents, kings and queens and royalty from all over the globe.
A pioneer in the field of television programming, Disney began production in 1954, and was among the first to present full-color programming with his Wonderful World of Color in 1961. The Mickey Mouse Club and Zorro were popular favorites in the 1950s.
But that was only the beginning. In 1965, Walt Disney turned his attention toward the problem of improving the quality of urban life in America. He personally directed the design on an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, or EPCOT, planned as a living showcase for the creativity of American industry.
Said Disney, "I don't believe there is a challenge anywhere in the world that is more important to people everywhere than finding the solution to the problems of our cities. But where do we begin? Well, we're convinced we must start with the public need. And the need is not just for curing the old ills of old cities. We think the need is for starting from scratch on virgin land and building a community that will become a prototype for the future."
Thus, Disney directed the purchase of 43 square miles of virgin land — twice the size of Manhattan Island — in the center of the state of Florida. Here, he master planned a whole new Disney world of entertainment to include a new amusement theme park, motel-hotel resort vacation center and his Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow.
After more than seven years of master planning and preparation, including 52 months of actual construction, Walt Disney World opened to the public as scheduled on October 1, 1971. Epcot Center opened on October 1, 1982.
Prior to his death on December 15, 1966, Walt Disney took a deep interest in the establishment of California Insitute of the Arts, a college level, professional school of all the creative and performing arts. Of Cal Arts, Walt once said, "It's the principal thing I hope to leave when I move on to greener pastures. If I can help provide a place to develop the talent of the future, I think I will have accomplished something."
California Institute of the Arts was founded in 1961 with the amalgamation of two schools, the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music and Chouinard Art Institute. The campus is located in the city of Valencia, 32 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.
Walt Disney conceived the new school as a place where all the performing and creative arts would be taught under one roof in a "community of the arts" as a completely new approach to professional arts training.
Walt Disney is a legend, a folk hero of the 20th century. His worldwide popularity was based upon the ideas which his name represents: imagination, optimism and self-made success in the American tradition. Walt Disney did more to touch the hearts, minds and emotions of millions of Americans than any other man in the past century.
Through his work, he brought joy, happiness and a universal means of communication to the people of every nation. Certainly, our world shall know but one Walt Disney.
