White Commodore - Parasarpa dudu
How grand and majestic this specimen looks! Take note of the red markings flanking the thorax and near the tip of the hindwing as those will be important for identification. It’s name (and the post below) makes me wish that sometimes Butterflies would pull rank on one another, When my dear friend, SaraLi, first sent me these images while on the South Korea leg of her yearlong Asia trip, I originally had it pegged as the Eurasian White Admiral (Limenitis camilla). I held onto that identification for some time due to the similarities in appearance to the White Admirals that I’ve seen in Ontario. The dorsal side of the wings really gave me the impression that they were similar, and examinations and cross-referencing them revealed similar looking Lepidopterans and that’s where things stayed for awhile (there was and is still lots of identifying to do). When resuming the ID process for the insects of Asia, only then did I notice those red markings and begin the search for a match. From my investigation, it seems that the members of the Parasarpa genus were once considered part of the Limenitis genus like the Admirals, but enough differences were identified to classify them separately. Currently I’m searching if this is true and what caused the separation, especially given how the taxonomic tribe is organized.
To be clear, Butterflies belong to the order Lepidoptera. Admirals and the Commodore here (among others) are are all a part of the massive Brush-Footed Butterfly family. From there, those with certain commonalities are sorted down further to the genus and then the specie. Tribe sits between family and genus, and there aforementioned Butterflies and more mentioned below are sorted into the Limenitidini tribe. Most of the adults look like they’re all built from a template: Butterfly body, mostly dark wings with a white streak across (with some exceptions like the Glider Butterflies), and the most glamorous ones appearing in tropical environments. While the White Commodore here is quite dashing with its curving wings, white scales and flashes of red, it’s only a taste of how colorful these Butterflies can become. While looking for a closer identification, I came across the Sergeant Butterflies (Athyma) which look similar, but a bit more compact and smaller. After discovering the Commodore, next to it was Moduza procris - the Commander Butterfly. What a beauty: the perfect combination of black, white, orange and red for a regal set of wings. This post may have gone a bit off topic, but I strongly recommend looking into this tribe (Limenitidini) and seeing just some of the wonders of the world of tropical Butterflies! Don’t miss the Lebadea genus as there are Knights in there!
