not to put too fine a point on it but I think the other reason that Americans don't protest like in other countries (the first reason being "we live in a fascist police state") is that violence just... isn't the same kind of threat as it is in other countries. like, we live in a society where threatening to murder people for petty reasons is 100% normal and often a significant part of someone's political ideology. it's a significant part of our culture in a way that it's not in other countries, so we do it all the damn time.

"molon labe" is a common bumper sticker. "guns don't kill people, dads with pretty daughters kill people" is a funny T-shirt slogan. you can buy targets for practice that have the faces of politicians on them and then shoot them for fun. violence is just such an ingrained part of discourse here, political or otherwise, that it's stopped being surprising. it's just background radiation at this point. it's like threatening the parents of a toddler by saying you'll make them listen to "baby shark" on repeat if they don't comply with your demands: like, yes, that would be awful, but you're threatening them with something they already experience constantly all the time.
