Story Alert ↙️ Dear Oldest Son. You are almost 12. It breaks my heart that I can no longer pick you up and smother you and squash you, kiss you and tickle you in my arms out of my motherly affection like I once did. Our relationship is still the same but with a few tweaks. My oldest son is my Joy and comfort. Alhamdulillah. 💞Long story below💞 I want to share a story with you, that really brought me to my senses and I hope I can try and be better from this experience. I once told my oldest son as i was super annoyed by him, that "I need a break from him and his shenanigans". But truly I can't even function without his presence in the house. Last week his school driver was late to drop him, I was not able to sit down until he walked through that door. The rush of relief and my smile gave away something. ..he laughed at me and said "I thought you wanted a break but now you ask me why I'm late?" That hit me hard. As parents we say things light-hearted in our perspective, but it can mean the whole world to our kids. I felt crushed and rush of childhood memories drowned me. My mom raised me alone in Bangladesh for 4 years when my dad was in Canada. I was 7. It was tough for her and she often said things to me that she didn't mean. But I remember they hurt and I thought she meant it at that time. Now as a grown up I realize she was just exhausted and stressed. But our words have consequences. I can't be that mom whose words haunt the kids decades later. As parents we don't realize how words have consequences and we are the "world" to our kids and if their world doesn't make them feel Loved even for a single moment, it is going to plant a seed in their hearts. This is a reminder for me to be a better version and to break that cycle. INSHALLAH. We can't be perfect but we can keep working on our relationship with our kids. I apologized to him and I made sure to tell him what he means to me.
