Some people are so short-sighted and sting that they forget that money is a tool, it takes great vision to see money as a tool. Before the pandemic, I met with this transit driver, I always go out with him on his bus but for a while during the pandemic, his bus wasn't working so I decided to call him, and we spoke for a while and I told him that I would send him very small money because I don't have much and he so much appreciated it and I was surprised because he had a bus and I didn't have a car or a bus why is he making it look like I gave him a lot of money 😅😅. Some months After the lockdown and everything becoming normal I needed his help and he came in through for me without hesitation. I discovered one principle of life which I believe it's hard to assimilate as humans because of the suffering and hunger we are experiencing, especially in areas where people don't have enough. Comfort vs. Contentment

I've recently been involved with creating feedback surveys for different purposes - both for school and work. In doing so, I've come across several different methods of how to survey people in order to determine one's satisfaction with a company or service. In industries such as healthcare, hotel, and air travel, one metric that's commonly used is comfort. 

"Please rate your comfort level on a scale of 1-10." "Was your stay in our hotel comfortable?" "Let us know if there's anything that could have made your travel experience more comfortable."

Comfort is the extra icing on a product or service that portrays it to be much better than the alternative. Think about it: air travel in and of itself is a feat of science, yet customers have become limitless in their search of the most comfortable way to fly: reclining business class seats and up-and-coming suites, such as on Singapore Airlines.

My small group and I recently spoke about how comfort is portrayed in the media, and came to realize a distinct difference between being comfortable and being content. Many times, the media advertises products and services as must-have solutions for customers' lack of contentment; the product is marketed as a way to meet a need in a customer's life that wasn't being happily met before.

However, we discussed how real contentment is being at peace with one's circumstances in life - rich or poor, sick or healthy, young or old. Keyword in that sentence: peace, not comfort, not excitement, not pride. I find that this is a real challenge for me at times. There are so many messages in the world that cause you to think, "If I only had X, my life would be so much happier!", or "Once I start making X salary, I'll be content with my position/job". 

With regards to the latter lie that's instilled in many of our surrounding environments, it's been found that people from many different cultures around the world report to be happier when they give away their money (read more here), despite their economic status. 

"What moves the needle in terms of happiness is not so much the dollar amount you give...but the perceived impact of your donation. If you can see your money making a difference in other people’s lives, it will make you happy even if the amount you gave was quite small." Wall Street Journal

This fascinates me, especially as a business student in an environment where finding the "perfect job" and the "perfect internship" are the goals, and the number of zeroes on your signing bonus is an important building block. 

All to say, it's a fact of life that money is key to how we operate in this world. However, the challenge is remembering that it is simply a tool. If we think of it that way, it gets easier to separate our level of contentment from the number in our bank account and instead focus on the number of blessings that we have.
