I love the dramatic spread of destruction in this photo. I kept my apeture locked in at f/1.8 and that allowed my to have a heavy focus map on the vehicle and a softer appearance to the trees that surround the area. I ended up taking a lot of photos of this scene and the centered, yet limited symmetry of this particular shot really struck me. I was emotional at the scene and that emotion, I feel, was displayed in the photo. I wanted a very clean photo with little noise in the exposure so i set my ISO low, but kept my shutter speed fast as to capture the caution tape that was blowing in the wind.

Storm Clouds over Blodgett Canyon

One of the photos I took when researching my Distinctly Montana Magazine article on the Landscapes of Norman Maclean. Blodgett Canyon, northwest of Hamilton, Montana, figures in Maclean's story "USFS 1919." one of the stories included in A River Runs Through It and Other Stories. I'm particulary fond of this photo, especially as I thought I was having a heart attack while trying to get "the right shot." Couple landscapes. . The rocky thing is called bad medicine. The story I heard is that the Native Americans told the first white settlers not to go there because it's bad medicine and that a huge rock slide buried a village. I tried to google, but whatever I found was annoying and apparently there's a petition to change the name. Maybe it's related to why the lake below is called bull lake. People love to make up a bunch of bull about mystic and historicized native americans that gloss over the whole genocide part. . All but the vertical one are HDR. Not sure that was worth doing and I usually prefer just a single exposure. In either case the pictures aren't super sharp and there's some motion blur in the plants. A lot of the landscape photos that are popular right now are tons of pictures edited together and even if I had the skill and patience for that, my computer doesn't. The way they do it, though, is by having each picture focus on a different element of the scene, without stopping the aperture way down and at whatever shutter speed is ideal. So you get a perfect long exposure on the water, every pit of the scene is sharp, etc. I'm sure there are similarly people who work way harder to get a perfect single exposure at the perfect moment. Also some publications have rules about that sort of thing and how far you can go with editing. Typically, what I want, and what some publications want is a realistic picture that looks like what you saw. . Also, in the pond in the photos, I saw an otter. I only got a picture of a splash in the water, though after hiding for several hours.
