The night that they finally break, it's like every single thing falls into place between them and the world finally snaps to its axis. Despite the fact that so many questions and uncertainties still remain when George wakes up the next morning, he knows that everything will eventually be alright as he watches Dream sleep the minutes away. What he doesn't know is exactly how much the stolen clothing he wears will affect Dream the moment he wakes up, and exactly how the man he just admitted to loving will choose to deal with it.

A laugh, some of its punch undercut by his panting, because Dream is still stroking him. "Like I've got something on my face." "You do." He could play it off but opts to play into it, instead. "You have two eyes... a nose... a mouth..." It's lame and obvious; George smiles, anyway, and shakes his head slightly. "Which one, Dream?" "Your mouth," Dream admits.

State of the Muffin Report 2023-24

Happy belated birthday to my fanfics! Little Zuko turned six back in March. <3 

Behold, my annual roundup stats, because you can get fanfic from the math teacher but you can’t get the math out of the fanfic:

Otherwise, a slow-but-steady sort of year on the fanfic front.

Serious Face Writing & RL:

Li’s Friends has now raised $4,206.21 USD for wildlife charity, not counting gift matches. <3

Finished the second book in my original fic series, Fox’s Tongue; The Skin Stealer’s Son officially launched yesterday! (Affiliate link, so that if you happen to buy it, Amazon pays me extra money for the privilege.)

I also created a secondary tiny human, and she is a DELIGHT. She was last seen a half hour ago crawling after her brother like a particularly aggressive tripod, Hop on Pop in one hand, and slap-screaming at it until he read it to her. My children. <3

Year Six (2024-25) Goals

Fanfic: 

Gonna finish the new case of Dark Night in Ba Sing Se. Gonna finish it so good. (This is a donation fic for the winner of my Fandom Trumps Hate charity auction and is therefore due by the end of the year, so woo artificial timelines! Ah external motivations, how I missed you from my school days.)

I’m incredibly excited for Blindsiding Badgermoles, and have that same lovely external motivation in the form of my sensitivity reader, so planning to focus on that this year.

Finish the current book of Towards the Sun. We’re currently on the final field trip, so that should be very doable. —I say, using the exact same wording for the third year in a row. Honestly this one’s less a goal than a joke to see how many years it’s actually going to take me. And hey, I’ve been making progress! We now have the delight that is Lady Jun! Third year’s the charm?

Serious Face Writing & RL: 

Get a solid start on Fox’s Tongue Book Three, Face of the Wolf King.

Get out large print editions of the first two books.

Continue raising children.

Special thanks this year goes to First and Secondborn, who blessed me with the ability to still manage over 100k in a year, which is way more than I anticipated at this time last year.

Listen, if there's two things I will never, ever, ever get enough of it is etiquette lessons and longing. This fic is perfect to me.

On a stag do in sunny Brighton with the Gryffindor lads, the last person Harry expects to run into is Draco Malfoy.

Started reading this at night and went, sorry, sleep, you aren't happening. Could not rest until I finished it. The most beautiful discovery of love and oneself.

Two young dads meet at a farmers market. They exchange parenting tips, longing looks, and root vegetables.

This is so very, very lovely in a chaotic (newborns!!), achingly sweet way. In my head this is "*The* Drarry dads fic."

ABSOLUTE TREAT, SUPREME BANGER. A confection of a fic -- the dialogue, the details, all adding up to a densely-packed, seven layer slice of dessert.

Muscle Memory by @corvuscrowned (E, 8K) 

There's something just beneath the surface, just at the periphery of Harry's mind. They've been here before — they've done this before. If only he could remember it.

I think this has my favorite last line of a fic all year. Maybe ever. This is exactly the kind of narratively layered, brilliant and beautifully captivating fic that Crow has done so well so many times. A gift.

Rich Friend by @sorrybutblog (E, 19K)

As far as Harry can tell, Draco Malfoy is still rich as hell. He’s just not a wizard anymore. Featuring: Draco Malfoy trying to make it as a Muggle pop star, Harry Potter as our confused and horny hero, bad driving, good music, and the mysterious magic of falling for someone.

LKSJ:FLKJSD. I mean, this is a perfect Harry POV fic, the most believable Drarry dynamic in the midst of a fic about Draco as a Muggle pop star named Dragon, the "I'm with the band" fic I didn't know I needed. I love it with my whole soul.

Sun Thief by @floydig, (E, 28K)

It’s 2005, and Draco Malfoy says, “Fuck the Ministry,” Harry works as a handyman in muggle London, and Draco should really stop pissing off the Squib gangs.

Bracingly original, thrilling to read, does not hold the reader's hand at all and just throws you into it -- fantastic.

Waking Up Slow by @sweet-s0rr0w (E, 22K)

'Twas the night before Christmas, although it’s July/Draco’s a shopkeeper, no-one knows why/There’s hiking and witch caves, freak snowfalls and more/Bad Christmas jumpers, nosy neighbours galore/Narcissa’s here too, but… something’s amiss/And what’s in those chocolates that’s making them kiss?

No one can make me SEE a fic the way Sweet does. The writing in this is so tangibly gorgeous, the love story is so tender and sweet and funny and lovely. The most charming of fics.

More often than not, the child will be secretly given up for adoption to a family in another country and no one ever remembers them. In our time, the queen-to-be, Harry, is hiding his secondary gender, posing as an omega to avoid being sent away. During his lessons, he learns about the history of his kingdom and his ancestors and he starts to get flashbacks to an older boy in his household who looks a lot like him. He begins to become suspicious of his predecessors and starts researching the recurring deaths and disappearances. The only way he can find out what really happened to the other alphas in his family is to search for one that is still alive.

A quiet day in. We watch a film, have something to eat, and cuddle?” Or, it's Valentine's day and Harry wakes up fatigued. Louis shows him that a change of plans is not a bad thing, and that the day can still be perfect as long as they spend it together. A quiet day full of love ensues.

Or, Louis has never bottomed before and carries that shame, and Harry has never had to deal with Louis keeping secrets from him before. Neither were prepared for walls to be built or arguments to knock them down, when really, all Harry wants to do is take care of Louis.

On a humid night in Portugal, Draco Malfoy opens a door that Ron had thought long closed.

The writing! The sex! The longing! The jealousy! The Dronarry! I am not a frequent reader of this ship but this fic grabbed me and did not let go!

Draco Malfoy and the Boy Who Lived by @hsvh-hp (T, 71K)

Having just turned eleven years old, Draco Malfoy is due to start at Hogwarts. He decides that Harry Potter will be his friend before they've even met. This, of course, does not happen.

Earlier this year I said to a friend that I really wanted to read a canon-compliant retelling of HP from Draco's perspective. Lo and behold, this arrived on my doorstep dashboard. This is gripping and wonderful. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

In the twelve years after the war, Harry attends sixteen weddings. As friends and acquaintances vow their lives to one another, he watches quietly from the sidelines. Step by step, Harry pieces himself back together, builds a life from the wreckage of his past and falls, slowly and thoroughly, for Draco Malfoy.

Incredible story that made me cry. The most creative magical landscapes and customs, just heart-stopping narration and character building, this fic is truly so special.

The way this turned the tumblr poll feature into ART made me giddy with geeky love for both narrative forms and, of course, my favorite of all the ships. Just so inventive, so thought-provoking, and yet the form never distracts from what this is -- a love story.

I did not spend my summer swimming in beautiful oceans or looking at ancient, beautiful art but THIS FIC MAKES ME FORGET THAT because it's so lush and descriptive and hot and perfect.

It’s been almost ten years since Draco Malfoy disappeared during a routine Curse Breaker training exercise. Harry, his partner in more ways than one, is determined to figure out why. As the past resurfaces and the present fades into confusion, Harry discovers the only thing more unreliable than memory is love.

Can’t be normal about this one, it was absolutely overwhelming to me. There is power in this fic, it's going to knock you over. Be ready for it. It's also so thought-provoking and full of the most richly-realized characters and so beautifully written that you'll cry (I did).

Harry loses something important. Malfoy helps him get it back.

SEXY. FUN. The dialogue is INCREDIBLE. Harry’s inner monologue made me scream into my pillow. Just read it you will not be sorry.

AITA for being "obsessed" with my childhood nemesis? by @rainstormradish (M, 4K)

I [24M] attended a small boarding school in the UK. There was a boy in my year, a couple of months younger than me, and he became my nemesis after we developed an intense rivalry. My friend [25F] told me recently that our dynamic was "weird back then" and that "it’s even weirder" that I still think about him today. What can I say that hasn’t been said? This is so brilliant and perfect. Another fic this year that does something so clever with its medium and still manages to not distract from its brilliant storytelling and character-driven heart.

Harry and Draco have been sleeping together for months, and it's fine. It's enough for Harry. But when things finally start to feel like the more Harry's been hoping for, a strange tapestry project has him worrying he won't ever get the chance.

I have so many wonderful things to say about this, I was truly moved by the story and the writing absolutely destroyed me. This one already has such a special place in my heart. It’s also worth noting that my original caption was: “Draco is so hot 🥵”.

Draco has wanted Harry Potter for as long as he can remember. After he’s attacked and turned by a werewolf he’s placed in a halfway house while he undergoes rehabilitation and training. The fact that the house in question belongs to the object of his desire has all of Draco’s wants rushing to the surface. And it’s almost full moon, so his self-control is stretched paper thin.

Draco Malfoy's life mightn't be the one he imagined growing up, but that doesn't matter, because Draco enjoys it nevertheless. He works at Flourish and Blotts, enjoys playing for the Islington Imps, his part-time Quidditch team, and spends his Sundays at St Neots, the home of his Mum, 'Dromeda, and Teddy. Best of all is Harry Potter, his beloved boyfriend, with whom Draco enjoys dancing, shagging, and watching Eastenders on Harry's big Muggle television. Life couldn't get any better. Life, however, has a tendency to change whenever you least expect it to.

JELLYBEAN 🥹 this fic captured my whole heart. Original and beautiful, so densely packed with detail that you’ll feel the whole year go by.

For eight years, Draco has been content living a quiet life of anonymity in Brighton, dodging pesky seagulls and enjoying the ephemeral boys of summer. And if these summer blokes just happen to resemble Harry Potter, it’s a mere coincidence—despite what his friends say.

They fought spectacularly. Worse, even, than before they started having sex, as prior to Harry being used as Draco Malfoy’s personal adult novelty item, they were rarely in very close proximity to each other.

By complete happenstance this was a month of very sweet and soft reads for me. I also was absolutely obsessed with this fic, where Harry and Draco routinely beat the shit out of each other as foreplay. It’s so good. And it’s still sweet 🥰

Harry and Malfoy run into one another a few times over the years. The last time sticks.

Draco has to have a baby (or have one on the way) at the time of his fast-approaching 35th birthday, or he's going to lose his home to his vile cousin. Harry offers to help, but their complex past—even beyond Hogwarts—prompts Draco to set out on a long journey of friendship, kittens, gardens, motorbike rides, and more.

This fic makes an absolute meal out of its tropes and is so original and fun to read and made me cry on a plane.

Draco Malfoy is in fucking shambles and it's all Harry Potter's fault. Right? Mostly.

There's my life before I started reading this fic and after I started reading this fic, and that's how I'll summarize this one! So good, so painful, so beautifully, devastatingly well-written.

Harry collapsed into the chair next to him. “What is happening?” “One of those infinite time loop situations.” “What?!” “You know. Yesterday is today. Today is today, tomorrow is today.” “But how do I stop it? I don’t want tomorrow to be today. I want tomorrow to be tomorrow!” “Yeah, that’s understandable.” Malfoy said calmly. “Do you like tacos?”

I love Drarry in a time loop, and I really love them here. Love the heart and the humor in this!

The Way You Say My Name by InnerLilith (E, 5K)

In which Malfoy calls Harry pet names to get him flustered and riled up, and Harry gets flustered and riled up because he secretly likes it. The problem is that Malfoy is only teasing…or is he?

This fic melted me into a gigantic puddle. The drarry dynamic in this is a masterpiece.

Yellow Is The Colour (Of My True Love's Hair) by @mintawasalreadytaken (E, 64K)

It started with a thought. “We have to get Malfoy out of the Manor.”

@mintawasalreadytaken really makes the two of them (and the reader) work for the relationship in this one, and I just love the painful romance and the tragedy of it all.
