70s のエコー 5
XL-305 がウチに来て、自分の気が付かなかった 70s のニュアンス的なことに気が付けるようになれたのは良かったのですが、XL-305 はリバーブタイムも音の位相的な部分の補正も全くできませんので(プリディレイは 1745 でやれますが)全曲 XL-305 でやるというのも難しく、どうしようかとまた色々探し始める訳ですが、ある日唐突に Hologram Electronics の Microcosm というリバーブも入ったマルチ・グラニュラー系のペダルの音が、ひょっとしたら自分の音楽には合うのかも・・という事を思い始めるのでした。

どうも自分がステレオ音像のエコーで 70s の音を探してもこれ以上は何もないと、無意識のうちに察したっぽいです。もう古いエコーマシンに答えはないだろうと。で、何故か Microcosm だった訳ですが、Microcosm の動画を沢山見ていると、この音の広がり方はリバーブ単体で作っているというよりは、モジュレーション効果で作っているっぽいと。サンプリングした音をぐにゃぐにゃに変調を掛けながらステレオで散らしているのでは、と。
なら、グラニュラーに特化したペダルを PCM81 の前に繋いで PCM81 のモジュレーションを全部ゼロにしたら PCM81 の音が今っぽくなるのでは?という事を思って、グラニュラーなら Chase Bliss も見てみようかと。
Chase Bliss 自体は昔から知ってますが、その特徴的な音を活かす場面を自分の音楽の中であまり想像ができなくて、買おうとは思っていませんでした。実は2019年に、自分 Horogram Electronics の Infinite Jets を買って、浦島太郎を解消していこう的な事をやったのですよ。自分が音楽を復活させてから見えた音楽の世界は、あまりにも先に行ってましたから、これはもう強めの刺激を自分に与えるしかない・・と。そしたら、Infinite Jets のバッファの音が独特なせいもあって、あの特徴的なグラニュラーな音を上手く自分のギターとシンセの間に挟む事ができなかったのです。

諸々を省略して話せば、結局自分の音楽でギターの音が未来を表現してしまうと、自分が想定している文脈が破綻してしまうのです。自分の想定した文脈なら、ギターの音こそ 70s を表現できていないとダメなんじゃないのかと。Chase Bliss は、確かに面白いけど自分の特徴を消してしまうかも、と。
ただ、改めて自分は何のためにステレオ音像にこだわっているのかを思い直してみれば、そういえば今の社会に適応するためなので、ステレオ音像そのものが「今」であれば文脈の破綻はない事になります。70s(自分の鳴らすギターの音)が 90s(PCM81)に適応しても2025年の社会にアピールできるものは何もありませんけど、「今」や「未来」に適応しているならアピールになるでしょう、と。その視点で Chase Bliss の音を聞くと案外イケるかもという事で、PCM81 の事はとりあえず忘れて、単体でもリバーブの音が入っている MOOD mkii を買ってみることにしました。Microcosm は、その時なぜか意識の外に行ってしまいましたので、まあ、保留。
いざ、自分の曲で MOOD mkii を鳴らしてみると、これは間違いなく「今」の音なのですが、自分の音楽で「今」の音をどこに的を絞るのかと言われると、Big Thief の『Change』的なインディーギターロックの空間表現の所なので、Chase Bliss の音を素で鳴らしてしまうと、割とエレクトロ・インディー的な所の音が鳴ってしまい、大分ピントがズレてしまいます(もっとも、Change はルームアンビエントをマイクで拾う系なので、シンセ音楽的なアプローチとは全然違うのですが、印象としての Change が表現している都市空間的な、そこ)。
まあ、Chase Bliss に限らず、今のシンセ系の機材は大体キラキラした音なので、そこが自分が目指す「今」のインディーギターロック的な音とは相性がすこぶる悪いのは、買う前からなんとなく分かってはいました。そこをまとめる時、自分には H2 Audio の 5011 という EQ があって、これがホントに重宝します。これは音そのものは今の音なのですが、魂が 70s の機材なので、この 5011 で音を作ると Elektron であろうが Random Source であろうが、もちろ�� Chase Bliss であっても、今のパーツで作られた機材の音とヴィンテージ機材との接点を作ることができるのです。これで MOOD mkii のキラキラした成分を削ると、これまた思った所で音が鳴ってくれて、まあ、大変有難い機材です。

MOOD mkii のポイントは MOOD mkii をギターに掛けないことでした。どうあっても 70s 垢に塗れたギターの音を中途半端な印象にしない唯一の方法を貫くなら、未来的な音はギターに一切使わない、だと思いました。MOOD mkii を使うのはベースとスネア。ギターを取り巻く環境を「今」に設定して、ギターには今持っている古いエコーマシンたちを使って 70s をまんま背負ってもらいましょうと。これなら文脈の破綻なく最後までイケる手応えが得られる感じになってきましたけども、色々やっていくと Microcosm もどこかのタイミングで買い足そうかな、と思っています。
というのも、MOOD mkii は思ったほど色んな音にならないんです。どっちか言ったらシンセで音を作る人向け、というよりはギタリスト向け、と言いますか。ギタリストの人って、びっくりするくらいシンセサイズ・アレルギーなんですよ。おそらく、エフェクターにシンセサイズの要素を入れてしまうと、そこでそっぽを向かれてしまうんだと思われます。なので、MOOD mkii ができることと言えば、実質プリセットだけの音、という。そういう意味ではギタリストって、楽器の進歩という面をサポートする市場の役割的な面から言えば、ちょっと邪魔な存在ではありますけども。

It’s all modern clothes save for the MK2 ninja outfit and the mask that I threw in for fun. I use a lot of cc and I don’t remember where I got all of it but if you want the download for something you’re welcome to ask and I’ll try and find it for you.
Some notes on her style that I’ve noticed:
Changing my headcanon about her eyes a little because honestly I can’t decide if I should keep them grey or turn them red because I vibe with both headcanons. So I decided that they’re both at the same time, as you can see in the headshots. (This may vary at different points in the timeline bc it’s still linked to her blood magic usage and mastery.)
Her style is basically leather, fishnet, and silk/satin in shades of red and black.
Tall boots and socks are her thing. She loves wearing thigh socks when she sleeps because they’re warm and she doesn’t wear much else because she just doesn’t like to feel suffocated in clothes when she’s asleep. (Though she will put on some shorts and a tank if she has company that she doesn’t want to see her in her underwear or if she feels they might be uncomfortable with seeing it.)
She has a hella strong cleavage game. She is most definitely a “free the tiddies” type of girl. Unfortunately, this also means she gets a lot of back pains from either going braless or stacking bras for The Look but she’s doesn’t give a fuck she’s too vain to pick a painless existence over having nice tiddies lmfao
Big mood is grunge / rocker chic but she can also pull off some really high class looks.
Her hair is usually in a ponytail, left completely down, or left down but with the front sections pulled back to keep them out of her face because her hair is thick af.
She does the same make-up look with little variation most of the time. She’s found her favorite look and she sticks with it. It’s a red lip and cat-eye combination with red eyeshadow and some strategic highlighter placement. She uses mascara too, but mostly a light coat for color because she’s genetically blessed with some thick lashes.
Her nails are always red or black and kept between a stiletto and oval shape. They’re a little long, but not that far off from her fingertips because she doesn’t like having to do weird hand contortions just to be able to use them.
Shorts when she swims because she’s a little insecure about her ass. Probably one of the only things she’s insecure over in terms of her physical appearance.

Creating an immersive space
Creating the East of England’s first immersive, reactive, and programmable space for the community, is not for the faint of heart. In an old warehouse that is now an amazing studio space in Peterborough, I’m trying to realise dreams...
This journey started after experiencing some truly amazing interactive projection work at Bournemouth’s festival of light and a wonderful visit to the work of Luke Woodbury https://www.dotlib.org/about, especially at the Three Ways School in Bath, and their amazing immersive classroom or sensory studio.
After the experience of participating and being expertly shown the possibilities of this technology, I was keen to learn more. Luke, generously offered to help with advice and signposting to correct equipment and software links! So, I had no excuses now...
This started a passion for new approaches to technology, space / environments, reactions and interactions. The integration of software and hardware, plus the way we can control and influence the interactions to explore our social boundaries... This is currently an extremely interesting topic for me, as I’m designing the space within the backdrop of a pandemic!
How it works:
A programmable, immersive, interactive studio uses software to help the artist or creator tell the room what they what to happen, they can add the sounds, lights and / or projections to create an environment or explore a situation... it can be a bit like VR crossed with a sensory room, that can all be programmed (For Star Trek fans it’s basically the holodeck... eventually!)
For it to be responsive and interactive it requires feedback from the user. Basically the user does something and the rooms sound, colour or image responds to that something. The feedback device can be a camera, light detector, infrared detector or tracking camera. It could be a switch, floor plate, conductive switch, contact card / receiver (think contactless payment without the payment, something else happens) it could be temperature sensors or distance/proximity sensors the list goes on... basically any device or sensor that a robot needs to navigate the world can be adapted and used, plus other devices like the wonderful makey makey and ardunio.

I now have some ideas and some of the technologies knowledge plus the space. It’s now a matter of building, programming, hacking, and testing!
Where to Start?
Luke advises to start simple and then build on that simplicity to more complexity, it sounds logical and manageable, so I decided to start with getting the lights to react to movement. I’ve worked with light before at nightclubs, creating moods manually with DMX light controllers, but welcomed the challenge to learn more.
Then I would add sound. I’m fairly confident working with sound or audio as that’s my major (to coin an Americanism). The software I’m using to control the space is Max for live. This is part of an audio workstation application that I’m very familiar with called Ableton Live.
If I can get these two elements working together I can build upon this as I go. Eventually to 360o projection and 360o ambisonic sound!!!
I was able to apply for some funding from the Cambridge technology fund to help with capital costs involved of equipment purchases (lights, controller, webcam, cables, etc.) also for R&D time at events, plus some testing via workshops to gage effectiveness and response to the idea and inform the application / approach going forward.
In October 2019 I started to research the lighting opinions available... there are a bewildering array of different lights with extremely variable costs! It took longer than expected to find the lights that would fill the space and be on budget.
I thought that a hardware controller for the lights would be best, plus it could be used to control the lights when not using the software. I did contact Luke just to make sure that was the correct choice. He said that a better choice would be the Enttec DMX usb pro mk2 as there was already a little program that had been made to access and control the lights via the software and it was free to use. So I took his advice, as programming a new device to interface with max/map was probably a step too far for me, at this early stage in the development.
The first experiment needed one more piece of technology - an external webcam will enable an image to be used as a data source. I had managed to get a little experiment working with the built-in webcam see video 2
Again there are lots of webcams on the market so very expensive! As I had heard I might need to manually hack the hardware I was reluctant to spend a lot! I did try to use a security camera but the type of video output data was not compatible I’m sure this could work with a little more research or extra hardware video graphics cards etc... maybe.
I chose a Microsoft webcam as it looked simple and received ok reviews.. I hooked it up to the computer via usb and opened the software found out how to select the new webcam and managed to get it up and running quite quickly see video 3
I thought I could now try the idea of turning on lights and hearing the music by moving in our large space with the external webcam able to cover an area by placing it through our internal office window
I set all the parameters in the software and placed a water effect light in the main view of the webcam, it soft undulating light was used to get the threshold value working - basically, this light was being used to set up the software so that other lights were just reacting to the movement from the water effect. Therefore, the further movements of people would trigger the lights and sound. see video 1
After a local event producer / crypto artist Lee Mason saw an example of the work he commissioned a bespoke installation for his future night club called Flux, this was the perfect opportunity to test the ideas on the general public. I was able to assigning lights to enhance the aesthetic of the room, and provide a bespoke reactive experience via ‘The Dancing Dresser’ Video clip here. In the clip is the amazing Rosie Summers creating Art in VR, and you will see occasional glimpses of the Dresser lighting up. The lights are reacting to movement in the room, from other lights or people’s movements.
Now was the time to provide a full workshop to showcase the space for some Young people from the City Collage Peterborough.
Results - Even a limited review of 5 young people with Special educational needs and disability has shown me that it's an enjoyable space to play with, dance, and connect with others..

This is gonna be fun...~
Might take a while to brainstorm a design though.

KSP Loading... Our New Dev Diary!

Welcome to the first edition of our official newsletter, KSP Loading… ! Do you want to get the latest news about everything KSP? Then here is the place to be. In KSP Loading… we will share all current developments of KSP intermittently between each update and more, so without further ado, let’s begin!
Update 1.6
As you probably know by now, we are currently working on update 1.6 as part of our plan to deliver quarterly updates. These quarterly updates will keep offering exciting new content that will enhance our players’ game experience, as well as overall improvements to performance and bug fixes. A key aspect of our work in recent months has been in limiting the impact on mods. As many of you have noticed, the majority of mods that worked on 1.4 did so for 1.5 as well. That’s not to say there won’t be any issues with existing mods when there are updates, but we will continue with this effort as we know that mods are an essential part of KSP and of what makes it great.
Part Catalogue Revamps
Fuel Tank Adapters
For the last couple of weeks we have been teasing throughout our social media channels bits and pieces of what we are preparing for update 1.6 and, as you have seen, we are continuing the revamping effort of the part catalogue; focusing particularly on giving life to older parts that aren’t optimized or simply look outdated. One of such parts is the Kerbodyne ADTP-2-3 Adapter. The purpose of this adapter was to accommodate the Rockomax and the Kerbodyne S3 fuel tank series, but it never really matched with the designs of either tank series. With a total remaking of the adapter’s diffuse, normal, and specular texture maps, as well as with the introduction of a brand new variant, this adapter will now seamlessly blend between these two tank series and its variants. We are looking into the possibility of giving the ADTP-2-3 Adapter fuel carrying capabilities as it has been suggested by the community.

Other adapters that received the good ol’ makeover treatment are all three TVR Stack Couplers. After the introduction of new variants for the the FL-T tank series in update 1.4, these adapters no longer match the tanks they were supposed to fit. Therefore, we needed to revise the TVR series and create brand new diffuse, normal, and specular texture maps for them to combine with all of the different versions of the FL-T tank series.

Similarly, both the FL-A5 and the FL-A10 Adapters got a well-deserved makeover. Designed for connecting 1.25m parts to 0.625m parts, these adapters got their UV maps optimized and received new diffuse, normal and specular texture maps. Additionally, a new variant that will match with the orange FL-T tank series was included.

As part of this adapter renovation effort, the team also gave both the Rockomax Brand Adapters a well-deserved face-lift. Both parts got their UV maps optimize, brand new texture maps and a new variant to combine with the orange FL-T tank series. The geometry of the large Rockomax Brand Adapter was also updated to give it a smoother shape.

The new Spark
The team also gave the iconic 48-7S “Spark” Liquid Fuel Engine a full-fledged aesthetic makeover. We wanted to enhance this engine’s versatile nature by including 3 very different variants that will also increase the customizability of your creations. The geometry was completely redone and the detail of the tubing of the engine was carefully crafted. New textures were also created for this part and a new emissive texture for the throttle animation was added.

The Mk2 Lander Can
We also took the opportunity to give Sean’s Cannery Mk2 Lander Can a brand new face-lift. We wanted this command module to be more in-line with comparable parts, so we reduced its mass and added a second top hatch. In an attempt to broaden the creation possibilities with this part we also added a third attach node to the back of the module and included a slimmed down ‘butter stick’ variant ideal for manned rovers. The default variant, on the other hand, will have a pair of built in service bays. The IVA view of this command module is also being worked on to match with its new look.

New Features
Activate Navigation to a Launch Site
Visual enhancements aren’t the only thing that have been on our agenda. In fact, there is a quality of life feature coming to update 1.6 that will help any stray pilots find their way back to any Launch Site or Runway. From the Map View players will now be able to activate the navigation system towards the KSC, the Woomerang Launch Site, the Island Runway, Dessert Launch Site or any mobile Launch Site set by a mission creator. Activate Navigation to a Launch Site will target the chosen location and add a navigation mark in the NavBall.

The Bug Hunt
Additionally, we have spent some time in the bugtracker identifying bugs that needed to be mercilessly squashed. For starters, in order to have more consistency between modes, the team made an adjustment to the SAS functionality on probes in Sandbox and Science game modes. Some of these probes had full SAS functionality in these modes, even though their description said otherwise, and these adjustments correct this. However, the SAS functionality on probes will be togglable from the game settings, with the old behavior being the default setting. The dV calculator in the burn time indicator included in update 1.5 had some bugs, and the team went straight ahead to figure out what the problems actually were, and of course fixed them. This included fixing the handling of docking ports and multiple nuclear or ion engines within the new Burn Indicator functionality. The flashing of the Burn Indicator and the display of dV before the launch of a vessel was also a problem that we fixed in the past weeks. Moreover, the Vernor Engines now use Liquid Fuel and Oxidizer correctly on the Engineering report, and we also fixed an issue that drained the fuel from tanks when the fuel availability icon was double-clicked. These are only a few examples.
KSP Enhanced Edition
In other news, we want to let console players know that KSP Enhanced Edition is getting a substantial update that among other things includes many improvements and an update to Unity 2017, which will improve performance. We will be sharing the process with you and revealing the content of this update in the upcoming months.
A new Website is coming!
We are also working hard on giving our website a new, sleeker look. Soon, you’ll be able to see the results for yourself; we are eager to see what you think.
Meet the team
We also want to take this opportunity to introduce you to our new Lead Artist, Rafael “Stylushead” Gonzalez. You have already seen his work these past weeks, including the new Key Art, the Halloween images and many things included in update 1.5. Here are a few words from him:
I was born and raised in Mexico City. I worked in the animated movies industry for nine years, most of that time as an art director, supervising from concept art to final product, illustration is my expertise, always mixing different techniques from 2D and 3D and sometimes traditional.
I love video games and movies and everything involved in their development. Also I work from time to time in webcomics as a colorist. I joined the Kerbal team as lead artist during the KSP 1.5 release and since then I have been producing, learning and enjoying a lot!
Ghouls in Jool Halloween Challenge - The best short stories!
Even though Halloween is behind us, we want to share with all of you some of the best short stories we were delighted to receive in the Ghouls in Jool Halloween Challenge. The challenge consisted of submitting spooky short stories based in the Kerbal universe and...oh boy… did we get some chills… Unfortunately, we couldn’t fit all stories here, but if you’re in the mood to read what our fantastic community came up with, click here.
Here are what we thought were the top three stories. Enjoy!
1.- “The Heart of Jool” by Ultimate Steve
Falling. Deeper and deeper, away from everything I have ever known. Falling through the flashes of lighting. Will I be struck, or crushed? Kerbin. So far away now. I am the first witness of Alien Thunder. Will I be the last? The only? And how long until I meet death? Gravity. I can feel it everywhere. Jool, pulling me closer still. The helmet creaks. The others would never hear. The ones who died along the way - The helmetless pilot. The crushed engineer. The scientist locked outside. Whoosh. And the world drew Golem Thirteen to its ultimate fate. Noises, growing louder ever still. But always, nothing But the menacing fog around the Heart of Jool. Until a voice, Menacing, kind, Evil and holy, speaks out from the void above. Hello. No - it couldn't be! The ancient legend was true! Have I met Evil? Tell me, child, what do you know of me, the Deep Space Kraken? The devourer of ships, destroyer of worlds, the embodiment of Death. Yours truly - but have none considered a force stronger than I? Which? Regret. CRACK! Long ago I destroyed ships, devoured worlds, killed mercilessly. My helmet gives way, great Kraken! In moments I shall meet Death! I met Death long ago, banished by the Universe to the Heart of Jool. And tell me, great Kraken of Deep Space, what do you mean by this? Child, With power comes destruction. At the top I ruled dust. I fell. From everything, wishing I could go back to mend it. Wishing the dust would absolve my crimes. In you I see me. And unlike me, I can save you. Pop. The visor gave way to the intense aether, crushing instantly. The last I would see, before my final toxic breath, would be The haunting yet noble face of the Kraken of Deep Space Against the backdrop of the cruel, unrelenting Heart of Jool. HOLD! T Minus Five. The launch pad. But how? The crew, all still alive. Golem Thirteen would stay on the ground. And then was a sound. Indeed, it was The Kraken of Deep Space. Gone in a blink, he said Goodbye and nothing more, with a smile that shook me to the core. But I am now certain I will remember that great regretful ghoul. The one who saved me from the void in the Heart of Jool.
2.- “Clank” by Blasty McBlastblast
Clank!
Startled, research forgotten, the two scientists looked up. They had both definitely heard it this time. This time it was undeniable.
“Okay, maybe you weren’t dreaming earlier” apologised Jedfen, but neither of them seemed pleased by this prospect.
Jedfen and Hencott were familiar with all the regular noises of Outpost V., but this noise was not one of them. They knew the steady whirring of the solar arrays as they tracked the sun, the hum-thud of antennae realigning, and the wet slap of sloshing fuel. Clanking was something new, and it was coming from outside!
Clank!
The two locked eyes, panic growing at the realisation they were not alone. Something was knocking against the outside of their laboratory!
“Should we call mission control?” suggested Hencott
“We can’t” replied Jedfen, wondering if Hencott’s stupidity might be higher than indicated, “Did you forget that it’s night here for two more days? We need to be facing sunward to get a signal to Kerbin”
“Maybe the supply ship came back?” Hencott proposed weakly, but that ship had launched weeks ago, the kerbonauts were alone.
Clank!
“WE HAVE TO STAY CALM!!” shrieked Jedfen, momentarily losing his cool “What would Jeb do?”
“We need more information” said Hencott, taking deep breaths, “We need to know what is making the noise, one of us will have to go outside…”
Silently both Kerbals stood to face each other, and proceeded to play rock-paper-scissors…
Clank!
“That noise came from near the north window” Jedfen said into the handheld radio.
“Copy. Approaching now. I think I see someth…” but the staticky reply was cut short by a yelp! Then laughter! Then ominous silence…
Minutes passed, but the radio only hissed. Amidst rising dread Jedfen moved to the suit rack, compelled to go help, but he was too late! The airlock began to cycle, something was coming in! Armed with a jumbo-sized snack bar Jedfen prepared himself to defend the outpost.
Through dramatic billowing gasses Jedfen saw him step from the airlock, grinning, and holding something that was attempting to wriggle free. Looking closer, he saw cradled firmly in Hencott’s arms an adorable tiny rover!
“Where did that come from?!” he asked, tension dissolving into curiosity.

Every year during the three hundred and thirty-third night, mysterious things start to happen at the KSC. None of the KSC staff want to stay that night, as weird noises abound around the Center. The only exception is Mortimer Kerman, who gleefully volunteers to be the caretaker for that night, from his usual haunt in the Admin building. In the deserted Astronaut Complex, ghostly footsteps and flushing toilets are heard. The great radio dishes of the Tracking Station creak and squeal as they turn, but only during that night. Pale apparitions are seen streaking down the runway, rising briefly before vanishing below the waves, while the big display screens at Mission Control fill with static. Even though the VAB is shut down for that night, the cranes and other machinery start moving with nobody at the controls. Fire and smoke bloom on and around the empty launch pad as a muted roar is heard, and hundreds of tiny glowing krakens scurry around the Research and Development center. A steady tap-tap-tapping punctuated with whirring fills the Spaceplane Hangar, without a soul in sight. They call it "Sotreum ed Aid"
When day finally breaks on that seemingly endless night, everything grows quiet again, and Mortimer starts to look sad. The tiny glowing kraken all vanish without a trace. But when the brave kerbonauts start arriving at the Astronaut Complex, they are shocked to find all the kerbals that had been KIA during the last four hundred days sitting around, drinking koffee...

3rd and 4th - Day 91 & 3 months
So I went to his place on saturday, gave him 4 roses and the gift I bought him from Arcachon. I did want to give him the letter where I say I love him but I chickend… he gave me so much stuff tho ! I did meet his new roomate but I was so hangover I slept while they went grocery shopping. Only woke up to my dear man with a rose in his mouth on top of me. We had dinner and spent the night talking. We only went to our rooms at almost 1am but we still had our solo moment. A lot of teasing, very soft touches and kisses and bites. Almost had an O tbh it was very mind blowing. We had the twinkling lights on which made the mood amazing.
In the morning we made noodles with veggies (and it was sooo goood) and had lunch with the roomie. Then we got ready, i wore my dress and put on some makeup and we took some pictures ! I look kinda tired on them and the lighting was really shitty but the pics are still very cute.
We went to mk2 in bnf to watch a movie, first we took our tickets then waited in a nearby parc that had really really romantic vibes, it was calm and shaded. We sat on a bench and talked. We already started talking about how to organize ourselves when school will start for me the day before in his bed, then talked some more in the rer about my parents and about social anxiety and introverted/extraverted. But on the bench we talked about anything, even made me count all my shoes. We then went to the cinema, I took our popcorn and drinks. We criticized some adds. The movie was really good. « Everything Everywhere All At Once ». Then we just walked to the tramway and kissed goodbye, kinda wish it would have lasted longer but he did want to see his family and he got to see his grandma ! So no regrets

Adding details:


With the gun now all done, the next step was to begin adding more details to the overall look of the American soldier.
To help me, I referred back to improved drawing of sergeant Sulley and images on my mood board to make sure that the details are accurate to not only my fictional character but also to the original us uniforms that were worn by soldier in the second world war.
I first begun to make the bag for the American soldier to carry but first I had to search up for a WW2 US standard issue bag to help me make sure that I can create a similar look for the bag as shown on an image. I managed to find one image of a bag which is a basic design but very different from the standard issued bag for the British soldier, making it more obvious that both soldiers are very different from each other.
I have an advantage with this bag with its simplicity of design but I also have a disadvantage as the bag will be hard to apply onto the soldier as the British soldier bag is quite wide so including it on his American soldier's back will be a challenge.
Firstly I made the simple shape of the bag using the photo as a reference but due to the issue of the bag being hard to add onto the back, I had an idea on how to make the bag appear to be sat on the back realistically by cutting into the shape at the angle where it will clash with the back and the other bag. I had a go at my plan on applying the bag onto the back and apart from altering the width of the bag, my plan worked. The only problem I had to deal with now was to hide up the angle cut by covering it clay and creating the other side of the bag to make it clear where the bag is sitting.
One thing I had not considered was that I did not have to worry too much about the details on the main part of bag as it will be covered up by the other bag but the sides will still be showing up so I had to make sure that the sides had some details included to contribute in my overall working style.
With the bag now complete, I begun looking into other features that are included on my soldiers design. The features included were grenades, pouches like the British soldier had on his harnesses as well a pocket for his knife to sit in.

I first started on making the grenade by rolling a small lump of clay into a ball, I then put pressure on the ends to create a cylinder like shape but since they are rounded at the bottom, I slimmed down these areas to create the basic shape of the hand grenade.

From the images of WW2 US army hand grenades, I noticed that they have a circular pin which is pulled out before throwing it. So I decided to create a similar effect by making my own pins using thin wire. To make them circular, I wrapped wire around my thumb multiple times to reinforce the shape, for this, I also wrapped tiny pieces of wire on the sides. The last two parts for the grenade was to achieve the realism of the grenade and I couldnt do that without creating the texture. Referring back to the image again, the grenade shown includes a chequered design.
I decided to create this effect on my grenade by etching multiple lines diagonally onto it using a small tipped tool. I did use a piece of plastic and etched over that onto the clay as doing this will etch the lines whereas without the plastic, it would cut into the clay. The last feature was creating the handle, for this I rolled a thin piece of clay into a rectangular shape. I cut of the length and thickness that was needed using the image. I then roughly placed it in the area it needed to be inbetween the top of the main body of the grenade and the side of the grenade, sitting just over half the grenade.
The knife pouch was very easy as I didn't have to create the actual shape of knife and could just create the look of a knife sitting inside. All I had to create was the pouch and a basic handle out of clay to convince the audience that the holder for the weapon.
The only thing I had to consider was the width of the pouch as it had to be fairly wide to gain the realism effect. I rolled out a piece of clay into a rectangular shape with enough width to provide more space. As pouches for these weapons are very rounded rather than sharp to comfort the wearer so I did this by creating a rounded edge where the tip of blade would be sitting.
I smoothed the cut using my hands to ensure that it was rounded all round pouch until the top where the handle is resting. To make the pouch I rolled out a tiny piece of clay into a cylindrical shape using my hands. To refine the shape of the handle, I cut off the edges to make sure that it would. for the handle I rolled a bit of clay into a ball which will be the tip of the handle. For creating a strong join without ruining the shape of the ball, I used my clay tools. particularly the tiny tipped ones to carefully attach the ball to the top of the handle.

With both the handle and the pouch for the knife now all finished it is now time to connect both together and then add it onto the soldier’s belt. The last major features I added in were some pouches for ammunition and food the US soldier has on his belt, very similar to the British soldier.
Overall I am really chuffed with these details despite them looking fairly basic and simple as each of them contribute to the whole look of the American soldier dramatically, adding more and more character and context to Sergeant Sulley. My best feature at this stage is the Grenades despite making multiple of them using only an image and not making trials before making them, even though this would have taken up valuable time but I think they have turned out looking fairly well. the only issue I have the isn't a big one as it does provide the texture is whether I have gone a bit overboard and creating too many lines for the pattern on the grenade. Another feature I think I have managed to adapt and overcome was adding the bag onto he back of the soldier despite the British soldier’s bag being awfully close to his back anyway but I think me cutting into the bag at an angle to allow me to slot in the bag carefully and securely and then covering the cut up with more clay for the sides is a necessary errand that has kept the look of the soldier looking just as good.
