One thing I really love about the Rivers of London series is that the narrator is this guy who is canonically interested in almost everything and periodically gets distracted during stakeouts because he stops to read a plaque, so it's very natural in the course of the narration for him to be like, "Hold that thought and let me tell you the history of this very tasteful lingerie shop in Soho."

'Some days it seems so long ago, and some days…'
I'm deeply fond of Thomas Nightingale and also he frequently makes me very sad, so I wanted to draw something about that. Also, I figured if anyone would suit Leyendecker illustration vibes, which I'm really into right now, he would.
(Drawn in alcohol markers and coloured fineliners, and image described in alt text.)

I Should be sleeping, but unfortunately I finished relistening to Moon Over Soho again earlier after I finished Amongst Our Weapons again the other day and decided to just loop back around, and I continue to be Deeply not normal about Thomas Nightingale.
2396 names of wizards who died in WWII and he personally carved every single one of them into the remembrance wall at Casterbrook. 3 out of 5 of every military aged wizard in Britain died and the rest of them gave up the craft due to injury and/or trauma, but he persisted, alone. He started aging backwards in his 70s but stopped at the approximate age he was during the war. He still remembers how and where all of his friends died. "Some days, it seems so long ago, and some days..."
I keep thinking of the DS9 pilot and the Prophets bringing Sisko back to his wife's death over and over again because "you exist here". Nightingale still exists in the war. And then Peter comes along and drags him into the 21st century and refuses to let him stay wallowing in his grief and spots Exactly all the ways in which he's broken and needs someone to keep the cracks from widening. Peter’s mum says what would one more killing be to a man with blood on his hands, and Peter thinks of the strain he's seen in Nightingale and decides no, no more, there's Always Another Way. For moral and ethical reasons, but also because Nightingale has been damaged enough. And it started when he put his foot down over the jazz vampires and threw 'what did all your friends die for?' in Nightingale's face.
I am. So very Not Normal about them in general and about that conversation in particular

“My Dad says that being a Londoner has nothing to do with where you're born. He says that there are people who get off a jumbo jet at Heathrow, go through immigration waving any kind of passport, hop on the tube and by the time the train's pulled into Piccadilly Circus they've become a Londoner.” ― Ben Aaronovitch, Moon Over Soho

why would someone use magic to kill a jazz musician in the middle of his set? I mean, I have my problems with the New Thing and the rest of the atonal modernists, but I wouldn't kill someone for playing it - at least, not if I wasn't trapped in the same room.

The Tiger Lillies - Moon Over Soho
From Two Penny Opera (2001), an adaptation (reimagining? weird take? classic Tiger Lillies twist?) of Brecht's Threepenny Opera. This is the equivalent of "Mack the Knife".
As the moon shines over Soho, the thieves all settle down, and a corpse is floating downstream, well I wonder, how it drowned.
And the moon shines on a body and that body oozes blood; is it Macky, with his switchblade, or is it an act of God?
Well, the moon shines over Shoreditch and the bells of bow did shine, and an old dog sucks the marrow from a bone, the human kind.
Well, the moon shines on a corpse, and a body is unearthed; was it Macky, with his switchblade, or was plague or cholera the curse?
Well, the moon shines in the gutter, and a rich man's stomach floats, and the rich man's purse is empty, was it Macky that made him croak?
As the moon shines over Soho, and the thieves all settle down, and a corpse is floating downstream, well I wonder, how it drowned.
Well it's… Macky back in town.

Just finished Whispers Under Ground by Ben Aaronovitch, and really enjoyed it! I’ve been making my way through the Rivers of London series, and my only regret is that I didn’t start the series sooner.
I think I enjoyed the second book (Moon Over Soho) the most, but I just love how the character growth and development gets deeper with every book. I love all of the characters, and especially Peter.
The worldbuilding, the magic system, the themes, etc, become richer with each installment, and I’m very happy there are so many books left in the series (with even more to come, I believe)!

Smakebit ~ Ben Aaronovitch

First law of gossip - there's no point knowing something if somebody else doesn't know you know it.

"We didn't have television when we were growing up," she said. "So we never got into the habit of watching. There's a radio somewhere for listening to /The Archers/. We never miss an episode of /The Archers/. Although I must admit I can't always keep all the characters straight, they do seem to be always getting married, having secret love affairs, and as soon as I've grown familiar with them they die or leave Ambridge." She looked at me over the rim of her teacup. "Not a follower of /The Archers/, are you?" "Not really," I said.

'Moon Over Soho' by Ben Aaronovitch
‘Moon Over Soho’ by Ben Aaronovitch
Genre: Adult Fiction – Fantasy Published: 2011 Format: Paperback Rating: ★★★★ I really enjoyed the second book in this series. Peter Grant and Thomas Nightingale are really intriguing characters throughout and keep the story moving along. With each book, we are learning more and more about the magic world of these stories. It makes sense to read these in order for sure as you see character…

so yeah Moon Over Soho, a sad one really
nicely sets out Peter's attitude towards the criminal justice system, rule of law and all that, definite disdain for paramilitary death-squads, strong respect for means of reducing crime that don't rampantly oppress people
we get the introduction of Sirah Guleed <3 <3 <3
which gives us the start of like the proper series plot which really the jazz vampires play second fiddle to in this book
sidenote - how do we feel about transfem Peter headcanons? dude has an interesting relationship with gender
anyhow on to Whispers Underground next, gotta love the London Underground
