I still had some gaps to fill in on the first pass scribbly thumbnails, but I've made a bunch more progress on that this evening. I've got 78 panels filled in, 17 pages fully thumbnailed, 6 partially and only 1 page that I don't have anything for yet.
(One of those finished pages is one that was previously blank because it was giving me trouble, so calling that in particular a win.)
I've also finally got a first pass design for the goddess Sam technically ends up a cleric of, which was kind of an important gap to fill. She still doesn't have a name, but she doesn't need one for this story so that's a problem for future me. I still need to design her shield and the paladin's holy symbol derived from it, but progress!
Now that I've got something for most of the pages, I need a new metric for recording progress on the Sam comic, so
Pages with panel layout finalised: 19/24 (nearly 20, one has a bunch of small panels piled on top of each other that'll be easier to plan digitally but the rest of the page is done)
Pages with text placement (roughly, subject to future tweaking) figured out: 12 and several halves
Panels properly thumbnailed: 31 (out of 79 currently laid out across those 20 pages, best guess is that there'll be just over 100 total once I've got all the page layouts done)
So I'm nearly a third of the way there, which is further along than I thought I was! I'm getting the easy panels out of the way first, admittedly, but still, making solid progress.

writing patterns
List the first sentence(-s) of your last 10 AO3 works.
Thanks for the tag @evolutionsbedingt! No recent works as I've barely written (fan)fic during the last three years (and when I was, all of them were written for Rivers of London), but I thought it was a real fun opportunity to dust the shelves.
I also took the of sometimes taking a bit more than the first line - realising how short and choppy and 'let's get into this straight away and with some character introspection or a short dialogue' my first lines are... guess this is my opening writing pattern, then.
time is broken (Gen, M-rated, Kelly PoV, Kelly & Nightingale, post-Ettersberg - Nightingale on the long way home and how he survived the last days / Trier) Kelly has lived for more than a thousand years. On this premise, it would be normal to assume that time, and history with it, had already become irrelevant to her. Not even in the way of indifference – but much rather like the waters of the river she had arisen from, slipping through the infinitesimal gaps in between fingers clenched tight, always fleeting, no matter whatever attempt taken – a natural occurrence through which she watched and moved and observed.
a little bit better at being happy (Gen, G-rated, Abigail PoV, Abigail & Nightingale, post-Abigail novella - Abigail deals with some of the emotional fallout) Nightingale keeps his promise. I am allowed back to the Folly for lessons two weeks after the grounding and say goodbye to Indigo before climbing the steps to the Folly main entrance. She slips away into Russell Square to do whatever omnivore foxes do when they are on holiday and off to get their version of a full English.
the crossroads of life (Gen, T-rated, Nightingale-centric study of severe trauma & aftermath of violence and loss, told from present-time first-person and past-time third-person) Time is fleeting, yet ever-present. Time is intangible, yet imperative. She keeps the world in joint. At the same moment, she breaks it down to dust.
here we are (Gen, T-rated, climactic battle of False Value, Nightingale's PoV) “Absolutely not,” said Thomas. There was more of Captain Nightingale in his voice than he preferred, but perhaps it would help to make an impression.
run boy run (Gen, T-rated, rough & fast written glimpse on Nightingale PoV during the long way home loosely based on the song "Run Boy Run" by Woodkid and even more so on this brilliant fanart by @jarrows) Cold light bore down on him. Its weight pinned him onto the floor, making gravity work against him even more. More than it had during all the blurred hours made of endless heartbeats measuring all the senseless days that had passed. A nightmarish haze. Step, step, another step.
luck had nothing to do with it (Gen, T-rated, Nightingale being shot in Book 1 told from his PoV, focus on trauma and Nightingale & Walid) Blood had begun to soak Bow Street beneath him, and breathing grew harder with every intake of air he attempted. He knew that he should move – instinct screamed at him that he had to find cover; that whoever had just managed to strike him would surely try to finish the job they had begun.
Excited? (Gen, G-rated, Abigail & Nightingale, Nightingale PoV; Abigail gets her first boxing lesson from Nightingale, heavily inspired by this jaw-dropping fanart by @jarrows) “Excited?” asked Thomas. “Yes!” replied Abigail, almost immediately. Only for a brief moment, he glanced up from his hands to get a glimpse of Abigail’s face.
I might just let hell take my fall from grace (Gen, T-rated, take on all of the Nightingale vs Chorley encounters we never got to see in canon from Nightingales PoV & aftermaths, Nightingale & Team Folly Found Family dynamics, only first chapter published / unfinished) Thomas had been very reluctant to separate himself from Peter and Sahra; he’d had quite enough of the disadvantages and mishaps that had occurred in past events concerning his apprentice and him splitting their forces.
tears of joy (Gen, G-rated, Peter PoV, Team Folly consoling Nightingale & keeping him company on the Ettersberg anniversary) I knew something was off about the day when I dragged myself out of bed in the morning and turned on the radio before showering.
we left them behind (Gen, T-rated, Inspector Murville visiting a severely wounded and traumatized Nightingale in a London Hospital for the first time post-Ettersberg) “Why the cellar?” “Because most of the rooms there don’t have wooden lining on the ceiling, sir.” Inspector Murville halted and stared at the nurse.
Tagging everyone who'd like to have a go at it. <3

Got sidetracked by other projects for a bit (including paying work for once, which was nice, if on a stressfully short deadline), but I got another couple of panel layouts pinned down and sketched in most of four more panels this evening, so progress

I really want to get this Sam comic fully thumbnailed before the end of the month, so in the interests of accountability:

I've accidentally gotten Way too invested in some characters I've been playing with for a 'one of my beloved early 2000s crime dramas but this time people are actually queer' type story, so here, have some middle-aged gays
George is a detective, Tim is a forensic pathologist, they're an established couple because I don't really write romance but I do enjoy a bit of domesticity, and any resemblance you may notice to other characters that I've drawn a lot is probably entirely deliberate, this is an exercise in self-indulgence

Tried and failed to make a coherent post about this but the Granny Weatherwax moment that lives with me forever that I never see quoted is the “what has he ever done to me, that I should hurt him so”
