My margin note to the above: Cody and I sat right here yesterday (Outside Preservation Coffee House) and acknowledged that we are in a see (sea) of cultural sleep.

Not wanting to engage in the sting of life is a resting life or is “sitting out history.” American suburbanites by and large tend to sit out history. Lou and Peter Berryman wrote a song about it called “Why am I painting the livingroom?” If you listen carefully to the song lyrics, you can almost think the 1993 song  was written today re: the Musk/Trump take over of the government and destruction of our democracy..

Song Review: Steve Earle - “I Fought the Law”

Steve Earle found himself a band for his new cover of “I Fought the Law.”

The single announces Better than Jail, a various-artists comp benefiting Equal Justice USA and Free Hearts.

Playing solo since the demise of the Dukes, Earle, whose voice sounds smoother than usual, puts a country-rock spin on the ubiquitous tune while leaving in place elements of both the Bobby Fuller Four and the Clash’s versions.

Out Oct. 4, Better than Jail will also feature covers from the War and Treaty, Lukas Nelson, Hayes Carll and Allison Moorer, Bonnie Raitt, Margo Price, Old Crow Medicine Show, Taj Mahal and others.
