Four-part “Willie Nelson & Family” Documentary to Premiere Dec. 21 on Paramount+
- “He knows something nobody else knows,” Bobby Bare says in trailer
Love and music were the two gifts Mama and Daddy Nelson gave to their grandchildren, Bobbie and Willie Nelson.
And those gifts, “saved our lives,” Nelson says in the trailer for “Willie Nelson & Family.”
Directed by Thom Zimny and Oren Moverman, the four-part documentary tracks Nelson’s rise from Nashville, his tax problems that led to the IRS seizing nearly all he’d amassed and his re-establishment and current status as beloved elder statesman.
“He knows something nobody else knows,” Bobby Bare says. “It’s that magic that he carries around in his pocket.”
Constructed with archival photos and videos and featuring commentary from Dolly Parton, Kenny Chesney, Don Was, Bill Anderson, Shelby Lynne, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Sheryl Crow, Rosanne Cash, Ray Charles and others, the series premieres Dec. 21 on Paramount+.
In the trailer, Nelson says it best:
“Good music never goes out of fashion,” he says. “Like the sun, it rises every morning. Like the moon, it lights up the night. Like the seasons, it keeps changing.”

song of the day
The Wallflowers feat. Shelby Lynne - Darlin’ Hold On
this album has been my obsession and not just because it’s the prettiest vinyl in my collection
but god look at that beauty??? it’s STUNNING. opaque violet marbled swirls with flecks of pinks and darker purple? GUSH.
The wonder of this album is the CONSISTENCY. It’s a 2021 release and yet it is easy to imagine this song on 1997′s Bringing Down the Horse. Good, solid, classic American rock music with an ache and yearning in the lyrics that only someone with the musical pedigree of a Dylan could pull off. Safe to say Jakob is probably my favorite of all the nepo babies, as I prefer his music to his father’s.

Songs of rare beauty that create a special mood.
"Can't Go Back Home"
Three of today's four performers are the patriarchs of the world music scene.
Even during their lifetime, they gained the status of legends, and those of them who are still alive do not need to prove anything to anyone or chase all sorts of ratings.
They just create masterpieces. And we just enjoy them.
American musician and songwriter Tony Joe White has always stood out for his soulfully confidential manner of performance and the melodic power of balanced musical accompaniment.
Over 50 years, he has released 42 albums (the 1st in 1969, the last one was released three years after his departure - in 2021)
"Can't Go Back Home" is a good song from his 18th album "The Heroines" in 2004, which he performed as a duet with the American singer Shelby Lynn.
British musician, songwriter and one of the founders Dire Straits John Illsley is already 74, and he does not even think about parting with the guitar.
And really, why would he do that, while such cool things are coming out, like "It's A Long Way Back" from his 8th solo album, released in 2022, which is called — VIII.
«It's A Long Way Back»
American composer and musician Willie Nelson is a true veteran of country music, he is already 90.
He has been on the big stage since 1956, and in these 68 years he has released 81(!) the album (the first in 1962, the last in 2024)
is beautiful and gentle
"A Woman's Love"
She'll make you fly up, or sink you like a rock.
She'll leave you high, or all alone.
If you take her word for it, it doesn't matter what you've heard.
Someone will say that there is no life for you without it now
If a woman's love ever finds your soul
She will break your will and take control
Because that's what your heart is crying out for.
This is a woman's love, this woman's love and nothing more
It's a woman's love that you live for.
American musician, singer and songwriter Teddy Sweems is the youngest among us today, he is only 31, but he has already managed to declare himself as a mature and talented performer of his own songs.
The single "Lose Control", released in June 2023, entered the world TOP 10, and in March 2024, the Billboard Hot 100 recognized it as the best.
"Sometimes falling in love can be like an addiction — always chasing the highs, starting from the lows.
It means losing yourself and losing control when everything starts to fall apart, and thinking that the only way out is to be with this person, chasing this feeling over and over again."
Today Teddy has released several mini-albums, as well as several singles + one full-fledged studio album.
I wish you a pleasant rest.

AllMusic Staff Pick:
Shelby Lynne
I Am Shelby Lynne
This isn't an album that flaunts its strengths -- it's expertly constructed, subtle music that grows in stature with each spin, revealing Lynne as a trad rocker of uncommon skill and charm. It may have taken her years to finally find her groove, but I Am Shelby Lynne, released 25 years ago today, is so good, the wait seems worthwhile.

Apple Album Auditions
I listened to another Audiophiliac review of equipment. Generally he is a nice guy and says nice things. If he is less than ecstatic about a thing he uses the "you should consider.." phrase. A common problem with Audiophile reviews is the "really good stuff" is too expensive for anyone less than a millionaire to consider. Frankly I do not care for a lot of his opinions, but he does have a really good LP collection.
He mentioned an album in his review of a turntable. It was a older album from Shelby Lynne. He described it as simple arrangements and a very clear recording. Lots of detail and well all the boxes I like to tick. I vaguely recall her name back in the day but was not a fan. Looking into her she is still around and very respected as one of those "blue-eyed soul singers".
The album is "Just a little loving". There are high quality re-issues available and it looks to be a very good audiophile recording. The eternal issue is liking the sound vs liking the music. If you do not like the music it becomes a test record. Is $40 worth another test record?
This album is available in Apple Music so I have to check it out. I do so. The music is 60s pop jazz lounge stuff. She is a really good singer. This album is described as a tribute to Dusty Springfield who was a big name in the 60s and faded in the 80s. Also a blue-eyed soul singer but from the UK but with hits on both edges of the Atlantic.
Back in the Golden Age of The Absolute Sound mag her songs were major test record tracks. One song "The look of love" was often mentioned in reviews is on "Just a Little Loving." It was on a soundtrack for a spoof movie of James Bond and written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It one of those jazz club seduction songs. Wikipedia claims it was inspired by Ursula Andress a 60's sex symbol model / actress. (The bikini scene in Doctor No 1962)
I have to say it sounded phenomenal. A simple jazz band backing her. Yup detail, clarity and a damn good performance.
I had the Apple Music album running in my car stuck in traffic. I sorta liked it. But there was a bit of unease. Hard to put my finger on it. Yes I am old verging on geezer and much 60's music I simply do not care for. Too simple usually. Jazz is different.
I am a fan of Morgan James a current Blue-eyed soul singer based in New York. She is a Julliard trained Soprano that quit Opera as she had no ear for language. She is a great singer. I found her with Post Modern Jukebox as one of the real breakout stars they had. I have digital copies of a couple of her albums as Vinyl has been basically unavailable. She sings much of the same kind of stuff. Do I feel disloyal for listening to another attractive blonde soul singer? Could be that simple.
Music effects one emotionally. Your response to it is emotional. Happy or sad or whatever is what you take from a song. I have my doubts about this album. I generally like this type of music, but I tie it up in my head with the performer.
One of my Iphone Morgan James albums is tribute she did to Joanie Mitchel. MJ is a much better singer than JM. JM's songs are pure heartbreak and complexity. They do not do songs like that anymore. It is her and a piano and a microphone. Simple and good. If I could find it on 180 gram Vinyl I would buy it in a heartbeat.
I have to fire up the steam powered stereo and play Shelby Lynne's album through at home. Trial by fire. I may still get it. I do not really want another test record. I want music I can put on and listen to and every so often hear a tiny thing that I had not noticed before.
Audition means to listen to.
