BMW’s Electric Vehicle Push Advances Sustainability Goals
Luxury automakers are vying to become known for electric vehicle leadership as upmarket car buyers increasingly value environmental sustainability and are willing to pay a premium for it. Complying with ever-stiffening emissions standards around the globe is another bonus.
The BMW Group is so committed to sustainability that it’s even making its marketing materials more eco-friendly. Its i3 guide for BMW Israel is described as the “world’s first fully sustainable car catalog,” according to Adweek.
Conceived by agency Gitam BBDO in Israel, it’s composed of chip wood, rubber, glass, tin, artificial leather, marble, satin, corrugated cardboard, recycled paper, canvas—even tarp from an old BMW billboard. The catalog was printed and distributed throughout all BMW showrooms in Jerusalem, Haifa and Tel Aviv, and will be distributed to BMW i3 customers in the market.

“Our mission was to tell the BMW i3’s unique story, and during our research and work process we realized that we can tell that story in a new way,” said Gitam BBDO Creative VP Eran Nir.
“Not only did we have a chance to create a sustainable car catalog, but we could actually complete the vehicle’s sustainability cycle. The result is a unique product that was not seen before, and a story told, in our opinion, in a way that the consumer, will appreciate enough to stop and listen to it.”
Also at the end of 2017—on December 29th, to be precise—the BMW Group delivered its 100,000th electrified vehicle with a ceremonial handover:

Looking ahead, BMW plans to expand sales of EVs in all its markets by dramatically increasing the number of models available in the next few years, and also helping to build out the required charging infrastructure.
Its goal for 2025 is to have 25 electrified vehicles, 12 of which are battery electric, including the BMW i vision dynamics. All brands of the BMW Group are moving toward being electrified.

It’s also proud about its EV progress to date, selling more than 100,000 electrified vehicles in 2017 alone, as highlighted in its just-released sustainability report detailing progress for the year through Dec. 31st. Its i3 and i8 models are outpacing sales of Tesla, the brand most identified with luxury EVs, which underscores the possibilities for popularizing EVs by BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and other luxury auto leaders.
The company says it has become “the clear leader” in sales of new fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Europe, with a market share of 21%—triple its market share for traditional models. “For us, sustainability means future viability—for the BMW Group and for society,” Harald Krüger, chairman of the board of management, said in a press release. “We know the challenges and are rising to meet them.”

The automaker aims to achieve a 50% reduction in average fleet carbon dioxide emissions in Europe by 2020 compared with 1995; it’s already achieved a 42% cut. In addition to offering more and improved electrified vehicles, BMW is committing to decarbonizing its production facilities.
Last year, for the first time, 100% of the electricity purchased by BMW in Europe came from renewable sources. It’s also making its supply chain more sustainable, including making its cobalt supply sourcing for EV batteries more transparent.
