I know you don't plan on reading any new SP books but I'm interested to know what you think about the tidbits you hear about?
What I know so far:
Eliza Scorn apparently has a baby: Hilarious. If it's our Eliza, the funniest possible option is that Dexter is the father - as @morwenna-crows pointed out to me, they are only in the same place once in the right timeframe, which would make the kid the result of a really ill-advised Requiem Ball bathroom quickie, possibly interrupted by everyone fucking dying. If it's alt!Eliza, Vengeous is the boring choice: it'd be funnier if both alt!Mevolent and alt!Serpine were having it off with alt!Vengeous's loony wife behind his back and now nobody knows whose spawn it is.
The baby is apparently a teenager: Yaaaaaaawn. Boring. I wanna see how Eliza, already pissed at coming second to China in the looks department, would deal with saggy tiddies and stretchmarks and 0.5 hours of sleep and never again being able to exercise without having to pee. Alternatively, if it's alt!Eliza, I'd like to see alt!Serpine reluctantly attempt to raise a child when she inevitably loses custody, with interference-slash-help from Skug, who at least has actual Dad Instincts and knows not to like. Hold it by the ankle or give it whiskey to make it go to sleep.
There are apparently more Corrival students:
Tumblr media
Kill them off or something idk. The Corrival students universally suck ass and I do not care about any of them.

Hell Breaks Loose thoughts:
So I've taken some time to think this over, I finished it last Friday.
What I liked:
Ghastly's mum - she's a legend, I want her to adopt me.
More religions - I can see these being a focal point of phase 3, and it has potential.
Sexter kissing - Landy caved and I loved it.
Skulduggery being more ruthless was chaotic fun. And, Ghastly mothering him.
The elders were actually more fleshed out. I even began to like Sagacious Tome, but it's hard to align him with the version we see in the first Skulduggery book. Morwenna Crow is a legend, I would die for her. Meritorious is a tired dad, I feel bad for him.
What I disliked (Oh boi):
Why so little of the Nasty Bois? No Diablerie? No actual teaming up? I call false advertising.
Why did Valkyrie have to be there?! It was a prequel. She had no reason to be there! I just wanted a book exploring the Dead Men and she just had to be there complicating things.
The Dead Men were somehow overlooked in a book about themselves - we learn next to nothing new about them other than a few former relationships and Hopeless likes cats and is scary.
There was so many random elements that didn't need to be in there - I appreciated seeing Mr Bliss, but the bracelet he gives Skulduggery literally has no relevance.
Overall:
I usually read a new book several times over within the first few days of having it because I love this series so much. Since finishing HBL, I haven't picked it up.
Honestly, it's kind of forgettable.
You guys know I liked Phase 2, but even I found the prequel lacking and am debating rewriting it myself when I have some time to actually plan something long form.
Rating: 2.5/5 stars

Idk if I said this already, but how do you rate the chances that Darquesse decided to resurrect every character who died in the series, the main dimension at least? What if she resurrected Meritorious, Morwenna Crow, Baron Vengeous, the Diablerie, Argeddion, etc etc etc, literally just blanket reset the world and put everyone back, like starting a new Elder Scrolls game?
She only resurrected two people. Ghastly and another unknown person. Landy said so in his podcasts about UtE.

if you have any spare thoughts about the necromancers and/or Solomon Wreath can I hear them
DO I Ok so you saw the ones in the last ask which is cool, let me see if I can find some more good ones Random ones:
Melancholia doesnt like fruits. She just doesnt and I don't know why I hc it
Craven has an iron deficiency
The necromancers are all very meticulous about being clean and being up to date on vaccinations and things! Being in such a tight space together means if one person gets sick, it travels like the plague to everyone else, so they're taugh from very young in the temple always wash your hands, sanitize, etc etc
Craven is a transman bc I say so
Morwenna Crow and Auron Tenebrae used to be together a long time back, the high priestess and high priest respectively. Eventually Morwenna found she was not happy in the temple or with Tenebrae, and left, this leading through a series of events (that I havent thought about) to her becoming one of the elders.
A fair portion of the necromancers, especially the younger ones during her time as the high priestess sort of looked up to her like a mother figure
Morwenna will not refer to Tenebrae by his last name or by his title, she refuses to give him power over her anymore.
In my fun polyclerics au basically the events of DB either dont happen or they happen w/ different necromancers than mel and craven u get me? anyway fun ones for that;
Solomon's favorite thing is having Quiver and Craven try new things (they are, enamored with his tablet and phone- Quiver is stubborn and wants to figure them out himself, Craven actually asks for help mainly bc he wants to know how to get to "the youtube, the video one" again. Yes he does say the apps like The Youtube, The Instagram, etc. Sol both loves and hates it
Oh! Craven gets into needlework! He's always been able to do it, but gets to be a little more creative and have more supplies when he lives with Sol (solomon cant help it he likes to spoil his boyfs,,,,)

Skulduggery Pleasant Series : Meritorious, Crow, and Tome
Serpine struggles to approach the Book of Names, and all Tome can think of is how easy it was to kill his colleagues.
(From afar, he watches Crow rush at her enemies, watches her open her mouth to scream before the lightning strikes her-)
They won’t laugh at him anymore. They won’t belittle him. There’s no one left alive in the Sanctuary to whisper behind his back, to spread news of his apparent shortcomings, about how he’s the weakest Elder, the most useless, how they should just find someone else to do his job. Sagacious Tome is not a man to be mocked-
And it’s a lesson they learned too late.
(He sees Meritorious’ summoning an energy shield, barely registering the betrayal before that Sceptre points directly at his face-)
When Serpine points the Sceptre at him, ignoring his pleas and threats, Tome tastes his bittersweet victories go sour in his mouth.
For one fleeting moment, he thinks of Meritorious and Crow, their faces in their last moments, still not comprehending their deaths-
And then nothing.

Actually, Morwenna, you are.
Skulduggery Week #1: favourite underrated character [6/?]
MORWENNA CROW
Morwenna Crow, man. Idek why, but I just love and miss this woman. I know, she only appeard in the first fucking book, and even there she didn’t say or do much, but I fucking loved her. She was the first necromancer we met, and even on paper she had a pretty badass vibe about her. I really would have loved to learn more about her. i mean, we know basically nothing. I don’t even have enough headcanons about her to make a moodboard. But I just fucking love Morwenna Crow, okay?

{ OOC } lifts the olden verse up
aight time to RAMBLE BAYBEE I ALREADY LOVE THIS VERSE
but before I do that, here’s a quick important disclosure to keep in mind to clear up any confusion for writing
• It’s easy to tell if I’m playing younger Eleanor or default ! It’ll be in the tags as v : olden days. Default has no tag. I am currently working on making icons for olden days as well, who has pinned up hair — so if my icons are Eleanor with long hair { as I’ve been using } , that is default.
• Eleanor currently only has two verses. Olden days, where she first started out performing miracles and embraced a rebellious side of freedom through piracy on the side, and v : pearly gates, which is just Barbossa/Eleanor { this is noted because Morwenna exists now, a fan child. }
• As I’ve said aplenty { people still ask me. } , Eleanor in general is multiship.
• Shipping with olden days may actually be extremely difficult because she is practically attached and grounded to her crew. Definitely open to friendships and such — but remember, this is a rebellious phase. It’s literally like a teenage rebellion. She’s a lot more violent and hyper. After being cooped up in the same old routine for decades and then finally being granted freedom to do whatever, she is embracing that shit like it’s the last supper.
basically aren’t you tired of being nice ? don’t you want to go apeshit ?
• this verse mainly exists because I love writing darker, violent themes — which is scarce in her default verse. current candle hates violence and will stray away from it immediately.
• it’s also like an experimental verse for those who are already currently writing with her default ! think of it as an AU ! literally her olden days verse could kick their ass but default would end up falling in love with them it’s an experience from maturing. still an AU. that make sense ? aight let’s get to info dump time
🕯 𝑶𝒍𝒅𝒆𝒏 𝑫𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒀𝒐𝒓𝒆 🕯
• Her hyper and violent personality is inspired by Jinx from The Arcane. If you’ve seen it, you know.
• This time era is is still the golden age of piracy — but more specifically The Price Of Freedom { POTC } .
• She has a pet companion in this verse ! A Romney Marsh England sheep named Dandelion ! She has him follow her everywhere. Sometimes she’ll use him as a rest. He’s the most nonchalant animal and more often than not comedic relief. There could be intense gunfire and people getting thrown overboard and he’d be chewing the ropes on deck.
• Makes absolutely zero effort in concealing her inhuman side. She wants people to know she’s not human if that’ll drive fear into their hearts. In fact, her favorite thing to do is climb up into the Crow’s Nest right before battle and let out a piercing, animalistic scream to throw the other party off. In turn, the crew screeches a war cry as well, firing up adrenaline.
• Similar to Blackbeard, Eleanor prefers to use tactics involving fear rather than violence at first encounter, hence the scream. This also explains why she doesn’t hide her candles, wax, or eyes. If it startles the other party, it weakens their defense. Usually, she is not the one to throw the first punch unless directly provoked — or she loses her temper.
• Still adheres strictly to choir code. She cannot kill a human being at her current rank.
But there’s nothing in the book that says she can’t get them to near death.
When fighting with swords and candles, Eleanor makes sure to shank and slice at areas that do not involve vital organs. Her method of combat includes a lot of burning, occasional quick stabs, a LOT of fists, then leaving them to be finished off by someone else instead.
• Physical combat inspired by Black Widow. She actually dislikes sword fighting and hates guns. Guns are too loud for her and she always stumbles backwards. Sword fighting takes too long for her. Throwing rapid fire punches and slamming her heel into someone’s face is much more quicker ! Relies on her reflexes and flexibility a lot. The quicker the weapon { daggers usually. } , the more likely she’ll use it.
Loves to brag about how she kicked a man’s ass as a woman. Also loves to brag that she kicked a man’s ass as a woman in a skirt.
• Loves to party and drink. Can move her hips. Is always singing and dancing. this can lead to nsfw lmao
• Will use the Black Widow temptation tactic. Fake flirts with her looks and persuasion, lures the person to a beach at night, aaaand strikes to get information.
• Unpredictable. Don’t trust this one easily.
• Older Eleanor absolutely refuses to ever speak about how she acted when she was younger it’s like looking at your old DeviantArt account when you drew creepypasta MS Paint art to her

Books, September - October 2020
A Nice Derangement of Epitaphs - Ellis Peters [”Carve this upon Morwenna’s Grave: / NONE BUT THE BRAVE DESERVES THE BRAVE.” You know, the verse is what gives away Pargeter’s experience as a literary translator - whether it’s singing translations of Mahler, or Welsh lament, or, as here, Dryden willfully misquoted and mixed with convention and double meanings, she so clearly enjoyed its sounds and allusions. None of it is the highest art, but all of it is distinct and memorable and precisely right for its purpose.]
The Disaster Tourist - Yun Ko-Eun, translated by Lizzie Bueler
The Angel of the Crows - Katherine Addison [look, you may SAY you filed the serial numbers off your BBC Sherlock wingfic, but you didn’t file them very hard, did you??? (It is, actually, cumulatively extremely different - at least based on the first two seasons, which is all I could bear to watch before I was fed up and over it - but I can see where all the edges were.)]
The Eagle of the Ninth - Rosemary Sutcliff
Passing - Nella Larsen
The Story of More: How We Got to Climate Change and Where to Go from Here - Hope Jahren
The Quest for Saint Camber - Katherine Kurtz
The Innkeeper’s Song - Peter S. Beagle *
The Pull of the Stars - Emma Donoghue [it’s Emma Donoghue, so of course it’s gorgeously done, but 1918 + the Ryan report + many extremely graphic descriptions of labor and delivery, and you know she doesn’t believe in easy happy endings in her historical fiction, so...] *??
Hamnet - Maggie O’Farrell
Regency Buck - Georgette Heyer
Daring and the Duke - Sarah MacLean
Anne of the Island - L. M. Montgomery
H is for Hawk - Helen MacDonald
The Care and Feeding of Waspish Widows - Olivia Waite [ridiculous cover, less food than hoped for, agonizingly slow burn; also, I enjoyed this much more than Celestial Mechanics]
Transcendent Kingdom - Yaa Gyasi
The Piper on the Mountain - Ellis Peters
Never Caught: The Washingtons' Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge - Erica Armstrong Dunbar
Mexican Gothic - Silvia Moreno-Garcia
The Turn of the Key - Ruth Ware
The Bird Way: A New Look at How Birds Talk, Work, Play, Parent, and Think - Jennifer Ackerman
Piranesi - Susanna Clarke *
Sorcerer to the Crown - Zen Cho * [I enjoyed this the first time I read it, but rereading made me like it even more; note that in real life Rollo would drive me up the wall, but in fiction he’s delightful]
1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus - Charles Mann [honestly, there were big chunks of this that I know well enough that I could have skimmed...but on the other hand, I don’t know much of anything about post-Pleistocene, pre-Inkan South America, so I appreciated those sections]
The Mark of the Horse Lord - Rosemary Sutcliff
Black is the Colour of My True Love’s Heart - Ellis Peters *
Tam Lin - Pamela Dean
Once Upon a Time in the North - Philip Pullman
Murder Must Advertise - Dorothy L. Sayers *
The Unknown Shore - Patrick O’Brian
Can’t Even: How Millenials Became the Burnout Generation - Anne Helen Petersen [definitely didn’t need a book-length version of this article, but I couldn’t sleep so what the hell]
The Big Six - Arthur Ransome
The Grass Widow’s Tale - Ellis Peters
Fool’s War - Sarah Zettel
The Nine Tailors - Dorothy L. Sayers
Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism - Safiya Umoja Noble

My mind is sorta blown that Cadaverous's name is recycled from Billy-Ray. I think I would have enjoyed that first book at its full, double length a lot, and I kinda like the idea of the Elders living long enough to be interesting. They get like one scene and immediately die. Also, in my imagination Morwenna is this like, almost-at-Melancholia-levels top tier necromancer who was probably equipped to handle Vile on her own for at least fifteen minutes during the war.
Weeeell, in all fairness, by the sound of it only Meritorious gets to live long enough to be interesting. Morwenna and Tome seem to get killed off fairly quickly again.
I do think Morwenna was powerful and held a high rank within the Necromancer Temple, but I don’t think she was on Melancholia’s level bc otherwise she would have been a candidate to be the Death Bringer, which she wasn’t. But unlike Melancholia, Morwenna’s power was stable and based on training and knowledge, so there’s that.
I think this is actually the opposite of a hot take (a cold take?), but the Elders should have lasted a few books before getting killed off so it would have been more of a shock. And Serpine should have remained in the background for a few books. Always kinda being there, showing up when something happens, teasing Skul, but never really actually doing anything. For one bc his banter and relationship dynamic with Skul is great, but also so the reader can either get as frustrated as Skul is bc we’re given just enough information to know Nef is pulling strings from behind the scenes, but Skul and Val can’t prove it, or mislead the reader into believing Skul is wrong and his judgement is clouded bc of the trauma Nef had caused him in the past. Then when Nef’s plan is finally set into motion it hits the reader by surprise too.
Nef would have been SOOOO much better as a recurring/slow-burn villain. Instead book 1 feels like we're only getting to see the end of the Skul VS Nef plotline which annoys me bc villains with personal ties to the protagonists make for the best enemy-dynamics.
Btw what are your thoughts on Scapegrace previously having meant to be Nef’s lackey before he got replaced by Vindick Leather in the final version of the book?
