I'm loving everyone's thesis level critiques of Scorsese's Goncharov (1973). It's really cool to see all these underlining themes I never picked up.

But how many of you are like me, and just remember this film as one of those Sunday afternoon channel 11 movies? Filled with commercials, graphic scenes cut just as the blood begins to spill, and poorly dubbed curse words to make it television safe.

Our favorite scene as a kids was when Goncharov confronts Andrey after Katya's betrayal. DeNiro points at Andrey and shouts "You Mother father!"

जयपुर। सुख दुख हर किसी के जीवन में आताजाताहै मगर यह बात अलग है कि कोई सक्स प्लानिंग के साथ दुखभरे दिनों से संघर्ष करता है और फिर अपने आप को संकट के इस दौर से बाहर निकल लेता है । मगर इसके विपरीत कुछ लोग दुख को अंत हीन मान कर डिप्रेशन जैसे दुख भरा कायरतापूर्ण का कदम उठा कर सुसाइड कर लेता है। संघर्ष में हारे व्यक्ति को क्या कुछ हासिल होता हो, मगर उसकी जिम्मेदारियों के साथ क्या कुछ गुजरता होगा, इसकी कल्पना करना मुश्किल है। यह सत्य कथा एक गरीब परिवार की है। पीड़ित का नाम हरभजन सिंह है। 1947 में जन्मे इस सक्स ने शायद ही कभी सुख भोगा हो, मगर है व्यक्त दुख के कड़ा व सुलगता रहा। हरभजन के गांव के पास पड़ोसी कहते है की उनके इस मित्र के पिता बचपन में ही मर गए थे। तब उसकी उम्र केवल आठ साल की थी। इकलोती संतान होने पर उसका स्कूल छूट गया। कमाई का कोई साधन न होने पर गांव के बस अड्डे पर कल्लू हलवाई की दुकान पर काम करने लगा। नन्हे बच्चे की ड्यूटी बड़ी सख्त थी। सुबह सात बजे ही वह दुकान के लिए घर से निकल पड़ता था। नाश्ते में एक प्याला चाय और रात की बची रोटी को गोल करके,चाय के कप में डूबो कर बड़े सकून से खा कर पैदल ही घर से निकल पड़ता था। उसकी पोशाक बहुत ही साधारण हुआ करती थी। पिता की मौत के कोई एक माह पहले उन्ही ने स्कूल यूनिफार्म के तौर पर सिलवाया था। तब यूनिफार्म का कपड़ा सरकार की ओर से मिला करता था। स्कूल के अलावा परिवार या फिर अन्य कोई सामाजिक समारोहमें इसे धुलवाया करता था। फिर बिस्तर के सिराने लगा कर सपनों की दुनियां में खो जाता था। बीस साल की उम्र में उसकी शादी कलवंती कौर से हो गई। शरीर में कमजोर होने पर अक्सर वह बीमार रहा करती थी। फिर भी उसने पांच बेटियों को जन्म देकरवह मर गई। शायद कोई बीमारी हो गई थी। उसका उपचार भी करवाया। मगर पूरा खर्च नहीं उठा सका। घरवाली की मौत होने परहरभजन सिंह पर बड़ी जम्मेदारी आ गई थी। देखो तो एक बेटी को पालना ही मुश्किल होता है। मगर जाने कैसे हाड़ मांस का बना था यह सक्स।पुत्रियों को कोई भी कष्ट नहीं होने दिया सभी की शादियां करदी। मगर समधियो में एक भी ढंग का नही निकला। दहेज के लोभी निकले। आए दिन,इनके घर आ जाते। बेशर्म से कोई ना कोई डिमांड करने लग जाते। मांग पूरी ना होने का मतलब एक ही था। पैसा दो या फिर बेटी को रखो अपने घर। इसी के चलते दो बेटियों का तलाक हो गया। बाकी तीन,अपनी मां की तरह बीमारियों की शिकार होकर मर गई। इनमें बीस साल की बेटी रणवीर कौर शादी के कुछ दिनों के बाद से ही अपने पिता के पास रह रही थी। एक के बाद एक दुखो को झेलते हरभजन बहुत कमजोर हो गया था। आंखों की रोशनी चली गई। गांव में अक्सर जब भी कभी हरभजन को चर्चा होती थी तो एक ही बात कही जाती थी, यही की घर में छोरा होता तो बुढ़ापा आराम से कट जाता। मगर वाह गुरु का खेल कौन जानता था,जो हर पल कोई ना कोई परीक्षा लेता रहता था। हरभजन के पास कितनी सी प्रॉपर्टी थी,फिर भी इसका दुरुपयोग ना होंजाय, ऐसे में डेढ़ बीघा जमीन और टूटा फूटा मकान भी बेटियो के नाम कर दिया।हरभजन बताया करता था की संघर्ष और दुख भरे दिनों में परिवार या रिश्तेदार, इनमे किसी ने भी उसका साथ नहीं दिया। आंखों की बीमारी का जहां तक सवाल था गांव की पंचायत ने ही उसका इलाज करवाया। हर भजन एक ही इच्छा थी कि उसके जीते जी अपनी मौत की तमाम रस्में उसकी आंखो के सामने ही जाए। 27 फरवरी को ये सभी रस्में भी पूरी हो गई।बरसी का समारोह भी गांव में ही करवाया। सभी परिचितों,रिश्तेदारों और पूरे गांव को भोजन कराया।गांव के एक बुजुर्ग कहते है की आज कल सामाजिक हालत ही इस तरह के हो गए है कि लोगों में प्यार तो खत्म ही हो गया। हालांकि समाज इतना भी नही गिरा कि किसी का अंतिम संस्कार भी ना हो। लेकिन हर भजन की जो इच्छा थी, जो उन्ही ने पूरी की। Read the full article
