My Thought Of The Day: Retrospect

I woke up this morning thinking about my uncle James Colbert. He's the one who started calling me "Man" because he said I had an old man's soul. I had just came home on military leave from England. We talked about the places that I visited and how like the military. But on this day under the carport, he got serious with me and started talking about life. I knew was going to be good.

He had is customary ice cold 8 oz bottle of Coca-Cola in his hand. Sipping on it and talking - just schooling me. When we talked I tried to get all I could by asking him a lot of questions and just listening to him. I never got a chance to tell him, but most of the things he told me gave me the real reason I chose to leave and see the world. He said something to me on that day that I didn't understand at the time. But some 25 years later, I do now...

"Sometimes in your life Man, you will wish you didn't know a person so you could really get to know that person. That is when you are going realize you have become a man..."

The album, I Am No Angel, by Jevon Angel is in the lane of a young up-coming industry Lupe Fiasco. The metaphorical content is prolific to pop culture and authentic to hip hop. The emcee flows like a cool breeze with a relaxed cadence. The sound production created by the veteran MouseQuake is phenomenal. This mixtape is easily an underground gem. Jevon Angel is without a doubt making waves under this LP. Toting a new brand of hip hop, the lyricism of the mixtape is next level. The shallow percussions give way to therapeutic eargasms. I Am No Angel is the reflections of a struggling artist. The mellow yet blunt honesty is a youthful melody throughout the entire mixtape. These verses are explosions of complex thought. Jevon Angel, is both an Angel and a demon for rap culture. Intuitively patterned after Travis Scott, he displays hype behind bars of solace. Cover draped in Rembrandt’s artwork exploding in the mind’s eye of a raw youth. Jevon Angel conquers the rap game with his intro LP. “Man of My City,” is a track in which the emcee represents Dallas to the fullest. “Struggles,” is the reflections of a starving artist. “Heartless” is a savages response to love and relationships. The track includes, a Richard Pryor sample. The bars in “1976 Ferrari” express the flaws of a materialistic culture, and the redemption of knowledge. “Imani” has a consciousness rhyme scheme about the perils of love. These bars are inspirational, as the artist, evolves throughout the track. “Excellence” shows Jevon Angel’s technical skills in writing, as the complexities drown the listener. “FvckBoyLoveSong” is a commentary on Social Media versus current relationship trends. “Culture,” is in-line with ASAP Mob flows, calculated, designer stylistic, alliterate assassination, of premiere emcees in his genre. At times the massive wordplay can be overwhelming, but the balance of the lightly produced strings and chords, tend to ease the listener. Overall, Jevon Angel is a young trailblazer, pushing the limits of new era rap music. With an affinity for retro, designer things and a challenge to backpack rappers in indie hip hop. The full range, of the conceptually gifted rapper, is mind-blowing. This merges the old youthful yet creative Lupe, with the mature drastically conscious Fiasco, we currently hear. As a universal cliche, Angel decides not to, “Dumb It Down.” Hip Hop heads respect that Hip Hop saves lives. Angel is a survivor. The problem is We as a People of Color just fail to do it for our own because of the aura of favoritism.
