It’s day 30 of the #MovemberVinylChallenge from @thateddiehix: It’s Beginning To Feel A Lot Like Christmas. The Beatles - Christmas Album (Apple(?), 1970(?)) What a wonderful discovery this was when I found this rather nice counterfeit copy of the Fabs’ Christmas compilation in the early 80s. I loved their sense of humor already from their movies but this was a goldmine of one-liners, off-hand zingers, song fragments and parodies, and moments of truth about their changing fortunes and relationships. When my kids were little, all they wanted to hear was The Beatles so I made a “BeatlePod” for the car, with all the official releases in chronological order. I had a digital copy made of this so I could insert the fan club singles in such a way that you would know when one year ended and another began. The only drawback was for my wife who hates what she calls “that British humor” - which is fair enough 😂. She was a good sport for as long as she needed to be and now hopes to. Ever hear these ditties and sound collages again! Ralph Font & His Orchestra - Longhair Goes Cha Cha (Westminster, 1959) It’s hard to suppress one’s mirth when looking at this cover or reading the title of this album, wouldn’t you say? It’s also a damned good cha cha album, with a version of Für Elise that would even get ol’Ludwig Van cutting a rug! Jonathan Wilson - Rare Blur (Bella Union, 2020) I didn’t “do” RSD for Black Friday so I’m pulling this gem out from last year. One thing that made it extra special was that a fellow JW fan - a perfect stranger - sent it to me when I bemoaned the fact that I wasn’t going be able to get to a record store. It’s day 27 of the #MovemberVinylChallenge from @thateddiehix: Someone Recommended. PLUS: Week 5 of the warmup to the @bowievinylchallenge by @talesofvinyl: Rock’n’Roll Suicide: Your least favorite Bowie album OR An album from a band that no longer exists. Pretty Things - Silk Torpedo (Swan Song, 1974) In a way it was David Bowie who recommended this to me as I noted the covers of Roslyn and Don’t Bring Me Down on Pinups and got curious about the band. This was the easiest (and cheapest) album to find in the early 80s so I picked it up. It’s a fine example of mid-70s hard rock with some arty touches, but it wasn’t until the CD reissue of S.F. Sorrow several years later that I truly understood their genius. Amazingly enough for a band that started in 1962, the Pretties survived in fits and starts all the way to 2020, when the death of main man Phil May closed the book on them forever. They seem to be a band that is constantly being rediscovered - why not start today? It’s day 26 of the #MovemberVinylChallenge from @thateddiehix: Autumn Album. Tom Ghent - Yankee Rebel’s Son (Kapp, 1971) Forgotten album here from a talented folkie who sang with Joan Baez and had a song on the Ned Kelly soundtrack. He has a nice voice with an occasional touch of Tim Buckley’s expressive quaver. I wish this was on Spotify so I could put “I Thank The Lord For My Friends” on my Thankful playlist. And for all you musos out there, the album is a showcase for great players like Charlie McCoy and Norbert Putnam. High five to anyone else who has this album! It’s day 23 of the #MovemberVinylChallenge from @thateddiehix: Most Collected Artist. David Bowie I’ve answered similar prompts before so I had to come up with a different way to photograph my Bowie vinyl. Including a couple of 45’s, my count includes 28 slabs of DB wax, with only one duplicate (Young Americans - long story!). That’s two more than the next candidate, a little ol’band from Liverpool called The Beatles. If you added my Bowie CDs (mostly duplicates), the count would climb to 51! It’s day 22 of the #MovemberVinylChallenge from @thateddiehix: Self Titled. KC And The Sunshine Band - S/T (TK Records, 1975) Monster debut from the Florida disco-funk outfit. If it didn’t have That’s The Way, Get Down Tonight, and Boogie Shoes all in a row on Side A, other nifty grooves like What Makes You Happy and I Get Lifted might not have been overlooked by radio programmers. The production is superb throughout, with hypnotic rhythms and soaring horns. I like it! It’s day 21 of the #MovemberVinylChallenge from @thateddiehix: Must Have Reissue. Hank Williams - I Ain’t Got Noting But Time: December 1946-August 1947 (Polydor, 1985) In the mid-80s, before the onrush of exquisite CD box sets, a massive catalog project like that heralded in by this first volume was a godsend when it came to making sense of a bedrock artist like Hank Williams. After years of indifferent greatest hits collections, this series promised to present all of Hank’s studio recordings in chronological order; in original undubbed mono; and remastered for the clearest possible sound. Great liner notes, too, by Colin Escott. It was a revelation! It’s day 20 of the #MovemberVinylChallenge from @thateddiehix: Instrumental. Fripp & Eno - Evening Star (Island, 1975) I discovered ambient music in 80 and 81, my last years In high school, and looking back I think I was seeking calm and finding ways to make my room an oasis away from the chaos in the world. Then, when I got my first Walkman, I could bring that oasis with me. Eno was prolific in 1980 but I also sought out his back catalog, digging in crates for gems like this one. The title track is key for me, with those looped and layered guitars slowing down your breath, and then Fripp starts telling tales with that trademark over-driven E-Bow guitar. Eno’s manipulation of the sounds and synth washes is masterful. Sheer heaven! It’s day 17 of the #MovemberVinylChallenge from @thateddiehix: Live Album. Sivuca - Live At The Village Gate (Vanguard, 1975) I was looking for the self-titled album by this Brazilian talent but it was too expensive so I took a chance on this for a fiver. Unfortunately, even though I revisit it a couple of times a year, I just don’t love it. While it has many fine moments, including a storm I take on Bill Withers’ Ain’t No Sunshine, it too often stops and starts and indulges in indulgent solos that were probably more fun to play (and watch?) than they are to listen to. Ah well, they can’t all be winners! It’s day 16 of the #MovemberVinylChallenge from @thateddiehix: Concept Album. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (Columbia, 1975/78) Some time when I was 15 or 16, I was visiting my sister at college. I woke up early, before her and her boyfriend, and pulled this out at random from her collection. I put it on, put on some headphones, lay down on the couch…and I was GONE…until I had to flip it over of course! Having only heard a song or two on the radio, I was bowled over by the nearly symphonic structure and consistency. And I’ve never wavered since then in thinking it’s a total masterpiece. I bought this beautiful 1978 repress in 1980 or 81 and I was happy to see it still had the deluxe inner sleeve and custom labels, not to mention that giant hype sticker!
