How about phantom of the opera (2004)?
OKAY LOOK I know it's popular to hate this movie but I actually love it??? I mean Gerard Butler can't really sing but WHO CARES? He oozes sex appeal. And the shots are all so pretty like COME ON. I just... I understand why hardcore phans hate it and I know Joel Schumacher made the worst Batman ever, but his Phantom is super charming for anyone who's not that familiar with the stage show. And Minnie Driver! LOVE HER.
And seriously, Point of No Return is 🥵🥵🥵 in this. Emmy's sleeves falling at just the right moment as she gasps because she's picturing banging Gerard Butler YES YES PLEASE.
It's okay, I'm ready to be canceled over this.

39. in your opinion what is the most underrated movie?
Oh boy ok, so I had to think about it for a while because while my kneejerk reaction is Metropolis 2001, I wanna be extra!
So to compensate I'm giving two movies. In my objectively correct take, the two most underrated movies I've seen are
Metropolis (2001) and 9 (2009)

1951 and/or 1979!
For 1951, I think I'd have to go with An American in Paris, for Gene Kelly's dance numbers and Oscar Levant's dry wit and virtuoso Gershwin performance. I saw it many times as a kid, and it's still a favourite. The runner-up is Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train (criss-cross!).
For 1979, I'd have to pick Tarkovsky's spooky, philosophical sci-fi film Stalker. And the runner up is All That Jazz. I love the way Fosse wove his own story through the entire narrative, it reminds me of... what's that other story, it's on the tip of my tongue...

Looking at my icon i gotta ask: The Firm
(And what can i do to get you to watch The Firm?)
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece
I have watched the Firm, nor have I read it, but I do like me a good John Grisham (that is who wrote the book right?) and I trust your judgement, having seen you talk about it 💜 you're going to get me watching all kinds of tom cruise, it seems.. ;)

For the film asks, I'm gonna go high and low here: tell me your thoughts on A Single Man, and She's The Man!
I knew you'd come up with great ones (and love the theme here 😆)
She's The Man - I was obsessed with this movie since seeing it in cinemas in 2005 and even as an adult I feel like it mostly holds up (and honestly was such an early indicator of Channing Tatum's comedic skills which I think people forgot in favour of him being a hot buff guy until like 2012) and I think Amanda Bynes is so good in it (I kind of always have a soft spot for her because of this and hope things get easier for her)
Of course its still obviously a teen movie made in 2005 so any thoughts of gender and sexuality regarding viola-sebastian-duke are non-existent, no one thinks viola could be trans, no one thinks viola-sebastian is gay even though she is very overtly into duke. But largely i think it holds up fairly well (and vinnie Jones! David cross! My brother and I regularly quote him in this movie)
(Sorry to have so many thoughts and its just movie 1!)
A single man: another movie i was obsessed with in mid high school, right in the middle of my Matthew Goode obsession! I loved this movie so much that I found a second hand copy of the book to read, and really enjoyed that.
The costumes! The lighting! Julianne Moore! The sets! Real talk i moved house in my last year of high school to a house that was this 60s-modernist place on the river and it reminded me SO MUCH of the house in this movie. I loved this movie but Tom Ford really betrayed me with Nocturnal Animals afterwards!!!

24, 45, 49, and 50 for the movie ask?
Thank you!
24. A film you wish you'd seen on the big screen
I watched Rungano Nyoni's I am Not a Witch recently, and oh man, I loved it. It tells the story of a young Zambian girl who's accused of witchcraft and sent to live in a camp filled with elderly witches. It's part black comedy, part harrowing thriller, part magical realism and part coming of age story, and it's so, so good. The visuals in it are just incredible, and I feel would've been amazing to see in the cinema.

45. A film that always makes you cry
Looking for Alibrandi has been successfully making me bawl since highschool, haha.
Tumblr media
49. A book you want to see adapted to the big screen
Ooo, there's a few, but the one that sprung to mind is Evie Wyld's The Bass Rock. Structurally, it's pretty similar to The Hours although it leans more towards the violence inherent in womanhood and twists that up with some pretty interesting gothic themes. It's very atmospheric too, which I think would translate well to cinema's visual language.
I am always here for the resurrection of gothic cinema though, haha.
50. A book you really, really don't want to see made into a film.
Mmm, the book that immediately springs to mind is Ruth Ozeki's A Tale for the Time Being. I loved the book, but I think it would be really hard to adapt in a way that didn't feel exploitative or fetishistic given one of the storylines is, well, about exploitation and fetishism and the damage it does to teenage girl's identities. Still - highly recommend the book!

2. A movie you think is underrated
The House (2022). I never hear anyone talk about it and the people I know that watched it was because of me. The House consists on 3 stories involving (you guessed it) a house. The first one is more of a usual gothic horror, the 2nd more of a modern horror and the third more like a dystopia. It has that past, present and future feel presented in a brilliant way and I love it so much. I don't believe anyone will love this movie as much as I do, but it was perfect to me. I really like how it's structered and I love the themes.
Tumblr media
Pride (2014) is also very underrated because I only heard about it from online friends. I can't believe I would miss that amazing movie if it wasn't for them. It is not my first answer because I do believe people have heard of it, just not in my country.
4. A movie you like but wouldn't recommend
If I like it I will probably recommend it depending on the person. I wouldn't recommend certain favourites to certain people because some of my friends don't like horror, for example, and other don't like silly comedies, etc.
I guess a movie that I wouldn't recommend to most people would be something like Do Revenge or X (2022). Funny how that is an example of both a silly comedy and an horror hahah I would rewatch both honestly. I still need to watch Pearl (prequel to X) so why is it not on Netflix, HBO or Amazon Prime?

20. A movie you think looks beautiful
Song of the Sea. I really love the artstyle, especially on the backgrounds. I love the textures, the colors, I love the thought put into the shapes, etc. It is really beautiful to look at and the soundtrack makes it even more magical.

2, 9, and 14 for the movie asks! 💙
2. What was your favorite film as a child?
I don't remember whether my first favorite was Disney's The Fox and the Hound or 101 Dalmatians. Or The Aristocats. I'm gonna say they were all my favorites as a child 😁
9. What was the last movie you watched? What did you think of it?
I rewatched Juliet, Naked last night. Does that count? I loved it initially and still love it 😁 it's a fun movie.
14. Who is your favorite director? Why?
I don't really have one but I'm going with Sydney Pollack for the simple reason that he directed two of my favorite movies. That's gotta mean something 😁
Thank you!!

20. A movie you think looks beautiful.
Thank you, @ladywynne!
19.  A movie you look forward to watching (could be an upcoming release or not)?
God, so many, my list of A24 movies has drastically ballooned beyond just the company’s lot and expanding onwards. But, if I had to pick one, The Handmaiden because my friend got me the extended cut, with more character moments and more time to breathe, and I heard it’s a hell of a romance film, even on the onset. Sounds like it’ll be a treat! ❤️
20.  A movie you think looks beautiful?
The Green Knight is one of those films that I kick myself for not watching in theatres. It was so gorgeous in 1080p on a laptop screen, just imagining how it would’ve looked in 4K or beyond on the big screen, the visuals, the set design, the costumes, the colors, the cinematography of it... its beauty would’ve snatched my breath away. 🥺

Have you seen Tři oříšky pro Popelku? I see it mentioned in the reylo community from time to time, and is one of those films that gives me huge reylo vibes.
NO but Google tells me it's considered a Czech holiday classic and the entire thing is on YouTube?! And they remade a Norwegian version (that looks pretty but is apparently not as good) last year? GUESS WHAT JUST WENT ON MY LIST?!!!
Thank you! I'm always excited for new fairy tale movies! I will watch and report back!

really awesome colors and set design but ultimately betrays itself in the last moments, even if there's something at least defensible in that choice. I don't love silent film but this one sticks with me

for the filme asks - 12, 14 and 15
12) A film whose main genre is Horror/Thriller
Everyone give it up for Playdurizm (2020)! Incredible debut feature by Gem Deger. The tagline is "Fear. Lust. Violence!" and that's what you get. Trippy and dream-like. Many a content warning but if you're interested just ask me.
Sound of Violence (2021) features Yellowjacket's Jasmin Savoy Brown as a music student who'd do anything for her art. Parts of this are a little silly but if you buy into it you're up for a really good time. Bonus points for toxic yuri.
On the thriller front I recommend Hard (1998). Low-budget movie about a closeted gay cop hunting a serial killer. Should be better-known in queer sicko circles and among queer horror fans.
Recommending a short film because more people should watch The Mark of Lilith (1986). Part video essay, part lesbian horror movie this short says so many things that we still need to hear and talk about. I am so happy the BFI released a restored version of this a few years ago, otherwise this might have been lost to time like so many great works of queer and black cinema.
14) A film whose main genre is Science Fiction
Space Sweepers (2021)!! One of my favourite feel-good sci-fi movies.
I have a soft spot for Kaboom (2010) because it was one of my first Araki movies. It's has his signature weirdness but it's, imo, more approachable than some of his 90s stuff (which, to be clear, I also love.)
I want to give a shoutout to afrofuturism with Dirty Computer (2018) and Space is the Place (1974). The latter is strange, to say the least, but the impact it had on space jazz and afrofuturism is undeniable.
15) A film whose main genre is Fantasy
Thank you for giving me a chance to recommend Captain Faggotron Saves the Universe (2023). I am so amazed that this movie was made in Germany. I gave it two stars on Letterboxd but I have not stopped thinking about it since I first saw it. Low-budget fantasy comedy about a closeted homophobic priest, his gay superhero best friend and his ex, the alien Queen Bitch. If midnight screenings were a thing in Germany this would become an instant cult classic.
As Boas Maneiras (2017) straddles the line between fantasy and horror but I'd categorise it more as fantasy. Very distinctly cut into two parts, part one is a lesbian love story, part two a story about motherhood.
Another Brazilian film in two parts (this time actually with two different sets of characters and different settings) is Cidade; Campo (2024). While it is classified as drama, it has enough fantasy elements to count as fantasy imo. Dreamy meditations on what it means to exist at the end of the world.
Ask me a number and I'll respond with a movie recommendation
