Shynola / UNKLE / Guns Blazing (Drums of Death,Part 1) Music Video / Multimedia / 1998

UNKLE was Jame Lavelle's musical project founded in 1992 in conjunction with his legendary British record label Mo' Wax. While the label was only active for about a decade it left a lasting impact on British music especially Hip Hop, Trip Hop, and turntablism. While the the label was still active it collaborated with and helped bring graffiti artist Futura 2000 to prominence. Futura alongside Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack, collaborations with Nigo of Bape,Mark Gonzales,Mike Mills and Money Mark under the creative direction of Ben Drury helped grow the reputation of the label as being at the forefront of alternative hip hop culture in the UK. A massive part of this because of the hype of Lavelle's UNKLE whose debut full length album in 1998 Psyence Fiction was widely anticipated and hyped by music journalists, as it was viewed as a follow up the 1996's Endtroducing... by DJ Shadow, who had since joined Lavelle as a full time member of UNKLE. While the album was ultimately released to mixed reviews(Pitchfork gave it a 9.8/10 while Robert Christgau gave it a one-star honourable mention). it has gone on to be retroactively appreciated as a cult classic. Part of the promotion surrounding the album was the music video seen in this post by British directing team Shynola. It mixes various mediums although mostly sticks to animation and can be seen as a distilled pull of Mo'Wax's visual output up until that point. It has characters designed by Futura 2000 featured prominently throughout the video alongside heavily edited live footage of a model in what appears to very various BAPE camo jackets(Mo' Wax had previously released a double album complication in 1997 including a side compiled by BAPE founder Nigo). Another notable aspect of the video is a section seen around the 2 minute mark that features an animated sequence of the UNKLE wordmark reminiscent of The Designer's Republic mixed with Wildstyle graffiti. A twitter thread by artist ANTIREAL from 2020 points out a contemporary analog of this visual style in his own work and his primary influence DMAS3.

“Umma, he’s staring at me again.” The child with fiery red hair clung to her mother’s leg and peeked at the new playmate she had been introduced to. His amber eyes hadn’t left her since they met, and despite having small horns herself, somehow his were scary simply because he was her size.

“Vine, say hello to Morax.”

“No.”

“Vine…”

Morax’s parent laughed. “It’s alright. It takes time. Morax, why don’t you try saying hello instead.”

Morax looked up and then stepped forward. “Hi.”

“No hi.” Vine pouted.

“Sweetie, try saying ‘hi Morax’ back.” Her mother rubbed Vine’s back and shook her head.

“Can’t…”

“Oh!” It dawned on her mother that Vine was embarrassed at her pronunciation. “Sweetie, he won’t laugh.”

“No.”

Morax looked back up at his parent in confusion.

“Try it once.”

Vine muttered unintelligibly to herself before saying, “Hi Mowax.”

Morax’s parent had to glance away to not audibly ‘aw’ at the toddler’s pronunciation.

He held out his hand wordlessly. The lack of laughter finally made Vine step out from behind her mother and take his hand. 

“Where go?”

“Pretty rock.”

The two of them wandered over to a bit of exposed cor lapis. They both crouched and poked at it, chattering in their young voices. The parents breathed a sigh of relief too soon. Moments later, Vine shrieked and started crying. On second look, the culprit was Morax, holding a strand of her red hair in his chubby hands.

“Morax, we don’t pull people’s hair, no matter how pretty it is!”

A look of pure surprise was on his face as he looked at the hair and Vine. “Oh. Sorry.”

It wasn’t enough to console Vine, who was overdue for a nap as she sobbed with big watery tears. Her mother picked her up and patted her back, rocking her back and forth.

“We can try again another day. It is quite late.”

“No!”

Morax’s parent smiled and nodded.

The first meeting didn't go as desired, but the toddlers soon learned that neither of them were going anywhere anytime soon and so formed a tentative alliance against slimes, cincins, and whopperflowers.

Venti drops in like a waterfall, as always. “Did you miss me, Mowax?” his voice is too saccharine, accompanied by exaggerated kissy noises.

“No,” he says, completely deadpan, even as he allows him to clamber over his lap, offering him a goblet of wine.

“Aw, I was hoping to see a cuter side of you,” the goblet is accepted with haste, the liquid vanishing down the gullet in record time. “Mmm! That hit the spot!”

“Did you forge Albedo’s invitation?”

“You won’t even let me enjoy the wine?” Venti pouts, trying to make him meet his doe eyes. “I got the invite fully legitimately, I’ll have you know. All bards were invited, and naturally, the best of them must go too.”

He still has his reservations but he sighs, letting the subject drop. What’s done is done, free to return to his regular antics of being a little pest gleefully settling himself comfortably on his lap. He takes his tea, the wine being left for only one person. 

“Yae Miko’s doing well, as you might expect. She said Ei’s come to terms with Makoto’s death, too. More or less, anyway,” Venti leans back into his chest, taking his free arm to wrap around himself. He puts down his tea to fully secure Venti in his embrace. “You should’ve come too, you know. See how the children are doing.”

“When did you become such a worrywart?”

“Because you won’t say anything, you old blockhead,” Venti yawns, wriggling a little to find a more comfortable position. “Anyway, I’m home.”

“Welcome back.”
