Strix, Strigoi, Strigiformes?
If you’ve been a long time follower of The Strain series, these are all words used in the TV series to describe our vampire villains and words to describe Quinlan. (except for strigiformes. I’ll get to it). Where does the word “Strigoi” come from? Welp, like all things with The Strain, we have to take a small journey back to ancient Rome and Greece.
Some time in season 3 we heard Quinlan be called, “strix” Although, somethings are kind of right here... Its also not... cause well.... Strix were birds... BIRDS. Owls to be exact. They were birds of omen. In some stories they were birds with long golden beaks, black talons with eyes yellow and round. They fed off human blood and flesh. The earliest record of a Strix comes from a greek story by Boios. It tells the story of a mother and her sons punished for their cannibalism. The mother is turned into a strix as a omen of war between men. Its believe the Eurasian scop owl is what influenced the Roman’s idea of what a Strix sounded and looked like.
(Let him out, will ya?)
In the middle ages, Strix was still a common word. It later gave birth to two new names for creatures, Striga and Strigoi. Striga was a word for a female vampire. While Strigoi meant male vampire. Strigat meant scream in Romanian. These vampires were more like banshees. They could scream loudly, especially in a ghost form. They’re said to be a type of troubled spirit raising from the grave. Strigat is also Romanian for barn owl. (keeps going back to owls. Quinlan’s half owl)
So what does Strigiformes mean? Why did I mention it in the title? Strigiformes is the scientific name for owls! All this because of the word, “Strix”. Words are fun! Also, strigiformes is a favorite word of mine.. its just kind of fun to say.
