Pen Review: Pilot FriXion Ball3 Slim 3-Color Multi Pen (0.38 mm - Pearl Green)

I have such a soft spot for multi-pens. I decided to try a dedicated Pilot Frixion 3-Colors Slim in pearl green ($9) with three different color options and came with 0.38 tip size (which is my favorite gel pen tip size). The Frixion 3-Color Slim hanging out with all the other mult-pens I’ve accumulated. I think I have one from each of the Japanese brands: Zebra Sarasa, Pilot Coleto, Uni Pencil…

My favorite multipen. Super smooth gel ink, inexpensive, vibrant colors, versatile (it has a mechanical pencil and eraser refill), light and not too wide.

Perfect for color coding or just having multiple colors on hand to keep the writing fun.

Bug Fables OC Tournament Round 3

Lorlei (xey/xem) from @flame-shadow

Lorlei grew up in the Giant's Lair roach village. While not much of a fighter xemself, xey wanted to protect xeir village and so helped work on building traps and keeping the constructs functional. One day, xey found some crystal shards, and between those and some random human items, xey eventually made the multipen weapon, designed to kill or at least severely damage deadlanders. Each cartridge contains element-aligned crystals inside a stabilizing fluid, and they're conveniently color-coded to show which element is within which cartridge. (Yellow is electricity, red is fire, blue is water for cleansing, to name a few)

Xey are strongly against using xeir weapon on other bugs except under dire circumstances, so xey have the multipen synced to the gem on xeir caplet so that only xey can operate the weapon.

After the events of the game, Lorlei is one of the roaches who ventures into Bugaria to explore and experience new places and people. Gina, an ant, finds xem, helps xem out, and keeps xem company. Together, they get into and out of trouble as they go on adventures.

Argentum (he/him) from @alagadda

Argentum is a beautiful silver wasp (Priochilus gloriosum) and a mercenary, assassin, and bounty hunter. He appeals to those who would seek his illicit services because he does his job without asking questions. He's very impersonal during work but much more open and emotional in everyday life. He's a real prick, honestly.

He takes the mandibles off his victims as proof of a job well done, but he often makes necklaces out of them and keeps them as trophies because there's something deeply wrong with him. He also loots all his victims corpses so his husband can sell off their belongings.

He's in a surprisingly healthy and loving marriage with Aurum, a golden reined digger wasp (Sphex habenus) ex-explorer, who became disillusioned with life after almost dying in search of the Everlasting Sapling. They both reside in Defiant Root where Aurum runs a shop to sell off the aforementioned looted goods, but he wants both of them to eventually move to the Golden Settlement. Aurum loves his husband deeply even if he's completely out of his mind and thinks wearing body parts as trophies is cool. He wants Argentum to do literally anything else as a job, but still loves and supports him.

He attacks with his prized blade, poisoned with his own venom and made by Aurum from the mandible of his first victim.

Usual disclaimer, hashtag-not-sponsored, I'm linking you to JetPens because they're fast and are always really great with how they package things for shipping, but YOU DO YOU and you can order this stuff wherever you want to, or maybe find it in stores but that's a little harder. Anyway.

I'm going to link you to product-line pages because ultimately the guts of the pen are the same, you can just decide what barrel style, material, and color you like best. (There's even a whole line of Studio Ghibli ones!)

First, Imma start you with this page here. Ignore all the individual pen listings, and scroll almost down to the bottom where you'll see "Browse by Product Line". That's going to be your friend. I can guide you to the best ink, but YOU know what's your favorite kind of pen to hold.

MY favorite one is the standard, which is super lightweight. Either the 0.5mm or the 0.7mm. I have also used the rubber body one, which is alright, but a little bulkier, and I am a very small person, but it's nice if you like a sturdier pen. There's also the sport pen, which is nice if you want something a little less candy-colored. I haven't tried this one myself.

The multi-pen I have is one of these, which has four different colored inks, plus a mechanical pencil. Theater and/or D&D nerd's dream.

I also have one of these slim multi-pens, which does not come with the pencil, but is very cute. It's my purse pen.

JetPens also has the whole line of Jetstream refills, so you can save some money and plastic when your pen runs out. Just find the page of the pen you like best, and it'll have a "Recommended Refills/Parts" button that will make your life easier without the guesswork. I've even got a replacement bag of erasers for my multipen.

TL;DR - Get one of these and one of these.

I use @/0000dae's DAE Multipen for basically everything (sketch/lineart/rendering), and sometimes I also use @/poolbranch's Speedpaint brush when I want a more softer brush!

Have you ever tried fountain pens? They are my fave fave. Not only are they so so gentle on the wrist, you get to buy ink in pretty glass bottles and feel very old fashioned.

I HAVE and while i am theoretically a huge fan I don't like cartridges (feels wasteful and also the aesthetic is inferior) and trying to write a whole [anything big enough to justify getting the pen + ink out of the drawer] while dipping your pen every ten words is simply going to end in me getting a different pen.

mostly i just want to watch over calligraphers' shoulders and admire them as much as they are willing to put up with.

the actual pens i actually use every day forever i love them i need them i will cry if they stop producing them are CUSTOMIZABLE MULTIPENS. I always wanted a multipen that didn't suck and NOW I HAVE ANY COLOR I WANT. Which usually comes down to brown, pink, and a mechanical pencil. it's glorious.

Fuse (he/him) from @monsterhatdoodles

While not technically a bug fables oc, Fuse is a bug and also a force of nature so I think he should be allowed to participate. Fuse is a tiny man who commits big crimes and even bigger explosions. While a genius mechanic, Fuse has very little common sense, and has blown himself up more times than he'd like to admit. You can even see him in action in my webtoon, doodlebugs! (shameless plug) He's a gremlin and therefore deserves votes.
