Mumbai: Sharad Pawar lauds dabbawalas, distributes free bicycles | Mumbai News
Tumblr media
MUMBAI: In a warm gesture, Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar donned a 'Dabbawala Cap' and lavished praise on the globally-famed Mumbai community of tiffin-box carriers, at a function to distribute free bicycles, here on Wednesday. "The dabbawalas have been serving the people of Mumbai since over a century. They have made it to the Guinness World Records. Even Britain's Prince Charles came to Mumbai and appreciated their services," said Pawar. He said that the dabbawalas efficiently and humbly ferry tiffin-boxes to over 2,00,000 office-goers, workers, students and others, and the people have a lot to learn from them. मुंबईच्या डबेवाल्यांची संघटना जिच्या व्यवस्थापन कौशल्याची नोंद गिनिज बुक ऑफ वर्ल्ड रेकॉर्ड्सने घेतली; इंग्लंडचे… https://t.co/jfE634SYbE — Sharad Pawar (@PawarSpeaks) 1626242060000 Later, Pawar distributed bicycles to four dabbawalas of the first lot of 200, and the rest will be given out over the next couple of days. Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Charity Trust (NMTBSCT) President Ulhas Muke offered the traditional 'dabbawala cap' to Pawar who readily donned it, draped the NCP leader with a shawl, and presented h a memento of their iconic trademark, a gleaming 'dabba' in a glass case. Muke said that the Maha Vikas Aghadi government of Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress has been very helpful to the dabbawalas and have promised to set up a Dabbawalas Housing Complex with around 3,500-plus homes in Thane. The first lot of 200 bicycles -- the chief commuting tool for the dabbawalas for the past 130 years -- was financed through crowd-funding, said NMTBSCT Spokesperson Ritesh S. Andre. "Each heavy-duty bicycle costs Rs 6,500. In around a month, HSBC India will donate around 1,300 bicycles under their CSR activity to cover almost all the dabbawalas now and in our proposed future endeavours," Andre told IANS. Taking a near-fatal hit during the two protracted periods of Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, the dabbawalas are now slowly limping back to normalcy, with nearly 25 per cent of the 2,000-strong tribe resuming duties, said another office-bearer Ramdas Karvande. "However, from August 15, we have decided to diversify by setting up a community kitchen, subscription-based, from where we shall supply tiffins to the customers all over Mumbai. Initially, we target 1,000 meals/day, which will be later scaled up as per the demands," Andre added. Renowned globally for their top efficiency, the dabbawalas have been the subject matter for studies and research in leading universities, and visited by The Netherlands' Queen Maxima, the newly-anointed astronaut Richard Branson and other prominent dignitaries, besides being invited to the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005. The dabbawalas reciprocated by sending a set of Maharashtrian-style silver gifts to herald the birth of Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, the first child of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, in May 2019. In the eye-opening documentary on “The Lunchbox Legends” we are introduced to the bustling, fast-paced world of Dabbawala’s like Kiran Gavande & Dashrath Paardhi, who are members of the Mumbai Dabbawala Association.
In a nutshell, the Dabbawalas perform a food delivery service which undertakes the timely delivery & return of lunch boxes to & from offices all over the Mumbai city, using various modes of transport such as cycles & local trains. Every day, the Dabbawalas begin a relay race against time, following the motto of “Error is Horror'', which has earned them a Forbes Six Sigma efficiency rating i.e. Only one error in six million deliveries!
This seemingly impossible feat has survived the test of time, thanks to the excellent working model the Dabbawallas have set up. The Dabbawalas work in teams that collect lunchboxes from homes & canteens, & transport them to a main sorting location. At this point, a simple but ingenious coding system comes into play, wherein the lunchboxes are painted with different colours & letters based on their delivery destination address. The next part of the journey consists of the lunchboxes being sent to the local Dabbawalas via the jam-packed network of Mumbai trains, to be delivered to the offices just in time for lunch. Then the lunchboxes are returned to their collection points, all in the time frame of three hours.
The Dabbawalas also follow an important set of management principles, making them a rare association that has never gone on strike during its existence (save one time when Anna Hazare was on hunger strike) They aim at keeping operational costs low, showing cooperation & commitment to the goal of serving the customer (Customer is King of Kings) & being humble. Thus, the Dabbawalas of Mumbai, through their simple working model, continue keeping the working population of Mumbai fed on time, every time.

Management Lessons From Mumbai Dabbawala Part 1- A Blog By Sanjeev Himachali
Tumblr media
A couple of weeks ago I went to attend an event organized by one of the HR Forums – “HR Enlight”. Dr. Pawan Agrawal, a speaker, author, and educationist, who has done extensive research work on Dabbawala’s, titled as “A Study of Logistics and Supply Chain Management of Dabbawala in Mumbai" was the keynote speaker of the evening. He has delivered over 500 talk sessions across the globe. Well, this story is neither about “HR Enlight” nor about “Dr. Pawan Agarwal”. This story is about Dabbawalas and corporate lessons we can learn from them.   Let’s first understand the basics –
WHO – Mumbai Dabbawalas is a group of over 5,000 individuals, brought together by a common mission of carrying homemade food for over 200,000 customers across 60-70 KMS in Mumbai region. They must not be confused with caters because they don’t cook food for clients. They just carry food from one place to another and return empty boxes back. They have a customer base of over 250,000which translates into daily transactions of 500,000 turns. Annual transactions are 156,000,000 (156 million) with an accuracy level of 99.9999% (as per Six Sigma Study Report) and On-Time-Delivery of over 98.5%.
WHAT – Mumbai Dabbawala’s carry homemade food from the houses of customers, deliver it to them in their offices before lunch hour and then carry the empty tiffin boxes and drop at their homes.
WHERE – They work in the financial city of India – Mumbai. They provide their services within a diameter of around    60-70 KMS.
WHEN – Dabbawala Service was started in 1890 by Mahadeo Bhavaji Bachche. In the beginning, it delivered food to a British officer and a Parsi Banker, however, soon it transformed into a flourishing business. Bachche started a lunch delivery service with a hundred men working with him. He informally unionized the Dabbawalas in 1930. In 1956, a charitable trust under the name of Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Trust was registered. Mumbai Tiffin Box Supplier’s Association is the name under which the commercial arm of the Trust was finally registered in 1968.
WHY – A question is often asked, WHY people in Mumbai cannot carry their lunchboxes? Why do they need someone to carry their tiffin’s?  In Mumbai, due to heavy traffic, it takes long hours to reach office. If someone needs to travel for 35-40 KMS to reach his office by 8 AM, he must start from his home at least by 6 AM. Longer the distance, earlier he must start. So, if he has to start at 6 AM, his wife or mother must wake-up by 4:30 AM to prepare his breakfast and lunch. Food cooked at 5 AM will be eaten by the person during lunch break at 1 PM. The cold food doesn’t taste good nor is it healthy for the body. Moreover, it’s strenuous to travel by overcrowded local trains with one hand on office bag and other holding lunch box. That’s why they use the service of Dabbawala, who pick-up lunchboxes at 9 AM and delivers to the customers by 12:30 PM. The clients of Dabbawala’s are average middle-class people who cannot afford to eat outside food, every day.
HOW – These Dabbawala’s carry lunchboxes barefoot, in a carter over their head; they use bicycles and local train services. They use a complex coding system to identify each lunchbox. The coding system comprises of colours, numbers, symbols and alphabets. Every resident pickup group is given a code, which is an alphabet or combination of alphabets. Destination station is identified by a symbol. Destination pickup group is given a code, which is numeric. Destination Address is given an Alpha-Numeric code. For resident coding and destination coding, different colours are used.
Each Dabbawala is governed by THREE principles – Work is Worship; Customer is God, and there is no substitute for hard work.
One might argue that carrying tiffin’s from one place to another and to return them is quite a simple task, what makes it so distinguished and what’s there to learn from it. Well, learning lies in the complexity of the system. To add to the complexity is the education level of these Dabbawala’s, most of them are illiterate, and who cannot even explain the address of their customer to a stranger. They work in many-to-many structure and yet deliver lunchboxes to their customers accurately, on time, consistently, every day, and day after day.

Meet The Dabbawalas of Mumbai! For anyone who has ever been to Mumbai, the Dabbawalas are a special class of people who everyone knows! For the uninitiated though – Who is a Dabbawalla? The word “dabbawala” in Hindi when literally translated, means “one who carries a box”. “Dabba” means a box (usually a cylindrical tin or aluminum container). The closest meaning of the dabbawala in English would be the “lunch box delivery man” Each day throughout the city of Mumbai, 5,000 of the dabbawalas deliver some 130,000 dabbas to offices throughout the metropolis. In the nearly 120 years of this service, the dabbawalas’ approach has remained consistent: a semi-literate workforce (the dabbawalas) pick up the filled dabbas from the households that prepare them and deliver the boxes to the requisite offices; they then retrieve the empty dabbas from these delivery points and returned them to the originating households, in order to begin the process again the next day. Roughly 260,000 transactions are completed within 6 hours each day, 6 days a week, 51 weeks a year, and operating at a quality level comparable to Six Sigma processes. Moreover, this operational excellence is accomplished in the absence of technology, such as computers or even cell phones. Stories – like the remarkable one that the Dabbawalas have, inspire teams to relook at their own paradigms with fresh new eyes. Book & Travel with confidence Our protocols are guided by the @wtandtc (World Travel & Tourism Council), UNWTO (World Tourism Organisation), Government regulations and include personal protection, extensive disinfecting, and social distancing measures. So when you travel with us you can be confident that we are doing everything possible to keep you safe. 😷 Book Now: https://mumbaidreamtours.com/portfolio/dabbawala-tour/ Thanks @sachinb94 For visiting us again 🙏🏼 #dabbawala #mumbai #tiffin #lunch #mumbaidabbawala #lunchbox #food #marathi #lunchdelivery #walkingtourinmumbai #mumbaicitytour #dabbawalatour #mumbaiuntold #mumbaitourism #cookfromhome #dabba #indianfood #mumbaitourguide #delivery #thingstodoinmumbai (at Dadar mumbai दादर मुंबई) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXv7ACxtsMB/?utm_medium=tumblr
