"Created while Lockwood was living in the UK, the side-long 'Tiger Balm' is a singular work within the cannon of tape music. Inspired by research into the ritual function of music, the piece explores the possibility of evoking ancient communal memories through sound. Breaking entirely with the dynamic language of the musique concrète tradition, Lockwood uses a select palette of mainly unprocessed sonic elements chosen for their mysterious and erotic characteristics (a purring cat, a heartbeat, gongs, slowed down jaw harp, a tiger, a woman's breath, a plane passing overhead), presenting at most two sounds at once. As one sound flows organically into the next, their shared characteristics are highlighted, opening a space of dream logic and mysterious associations between nature and culture, the ancient and the modern. The B side presents two pieces for percussion recorded here for the first time. 'Amazonia Dreaming' (1987), performed by Dominic Donato, uses unaccompanied snare drum and voice to evoke the nocturnal soundscape of the Amazon rainforest. When RSE was first conceived with Fallen Leaves Camouflaged Behind Tropical Flowers in 2011, the project was shrouded in a veil of mystery which left many fiends guessing to its provenance -- it seemed too far reduced to be identified as Fernow's work, but also didn't easily resonate with anyone of Hospital Productions' usual suspects, instead holding a unique line of stygian slow techno that sounded like some our bleakest, febrile fantasies come to life. Soon enough RSE's creator and navigator was indeed revealed to be Fernow, and the project became regarded among his most prized golems by those in the know, not least because it was starkly defined in contrast to his myriad other pseudonyms -- Vatican Shadow, Prurient, Christian Cosmos, Force Publique Congo, and so on -- by dint of its perceived restraint and glowering minimalism. Perhaps because of that stringent, meditative asceticism, the hypnotic grip of RSE has remained undiminished and perhaps as strong as ever on this new vinyl edition, where the predator heartbeat and keening tonal groans of "Life Would Transform" sound more pensive and narcotically effective than ever, and the borderland industrial chug and clag of "Skull Covered In Moss" seems to be seated deeper into its dank gloom, emulating a location recording of a burial-by-mud in some godforsaken no-man's-land, with lurking parakeets and mechanical birds awaiting their turn on your soon-to-be carrion. It features tracks recorded during his 1981 tour of Australia, including live versions of songs that grace his various LPs recorded for Lebanese and Egyptian labels during the 1970s with one phenomenal tune, "Al Rabieh," being exclusive here as never before issued in any form. 'SKALAR' explores how light and sound affect our emotions

Photons have no mass, but in an exhibition at the CTM electronic music festival in Berlin, artist Christopher Bauder treated light as a moldable, solid substance. The installation was married to a complex soundscape by musician and composer Kangding Ray, and set in the historic Kraftwerk Berlin industrial space. The result, SKALAR, was an epic light show that put spectators through an entire "wheel of emotions."

SKALAR is ambitious, but it came together pretty quickly. Bauder had worked at the Kraftwerk before, and felt that the former power station's scale and industrial vibe would be well-suited to a large installation. The opportunity to do something at the site arose in November, giving Bauder and his collaborators just a few months to pull something together for the February CTM festival.

The sped-up timeframe and nature of the space galvanized Bauder and Kangding Ray. "It's not a place you negotiate with," he told the lighting manufacturer, Robe. "The deal is that you take it on-board and treat it with the respect it deserves, find solutions for issues like reverb times and the special rigging required."

Working with Kraftwerk Berlin, Kinetic Lights and Robe, Bauder installed 65 double-sided mirrors, each with a perimeter ring of 180 programmable pixels, suspended by 195 motors. That lets each mirror tilt and pan, and gives each them around 25 feet of up and down movement.

Around 90 "Pointe" ceramic discharge HRI lights with highly calibrated colors were attached to the walls and floor, allowing for nearly infinite light effects when they hit the mirrors. Bauder and his team programmed a series of treatments, ranging from dark and foreboding to lighthearted and hopeful, that trigger the lights via MIDI keys.

The movements were set to play a 45-minute show that tapped into four of the eight parts of the human wheel of emotions theorized by psychologist Robert Plutchik. Bauder and Ray also performed six special, more intense live shows that played on all eight emotions.

Visually, the work evokes industrial pipes, alien spacecraft, planets and a rising, ray-emitting sun. The changing tonalities and animated lights are designed to evoke "awe, surprise, exhilaration, anticipation and of having one's senses overwhelmed ... in repeated cycles throughout the piece," Bauder wrote. SKALAR must have succeeded in that because it sold out during the entire CTM run, despite its abstract nature, and Bauder now hopes to tour the installation to an international audience.

The live performance of SKALAR is an extended and intensified version of the exhibition cycle. Performed and experienced as a concert, SKALAR live has a defined duration and a dramaturgic development with alternating ambient and beat-driven sections. The connection between beats and real-time visuals play a more dominant role in the live setting. Every live performance is slightly different, and both visuals and music are controlled, altered and arranged by Christopher Bauder and Kangding Ray in real time on location.

The concept of SKALAR is based on Robert Plutchik’s psychoevolutionary theory of emotion that considers eight primary emotions: anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise, anticipation, trust, and joy. The combination of kinetic mirrors, perfectly synchronized moving lasers, a changing color palette, and a sophisticated multi-channel sound system triggers sensory and psychological reactions and offers a truly innovative way to experience and feel art.

SKALAR is a large-scale art installation that explores the complex impact of light and sound on human perception. The massive audio-visual sculpture is a collaborative piece by light artist Christopher Bauder and musician Kangding Ray. They first presented this immersive audio-visual experience inside the pitch-dark industrial space of Kraftwerk Berlin during CTM Festival 2018. While SKALAR ran daily as an exhibition for four weeks, the artists also performed four exclusive live shows.

The live performance of SKALAR is an extended and intensified version of the exhibition cycle. Performed and experienced as a concert, SKALAR live has a defined duration and a dramaturgic development with alternating ambient and beat-driven sections. The connection between beats and real-time visuals play a more dominant role in the live setting. Every live performance is slightly different, and both visuals and music are controlled, altered and arranged by Christopher Bauder and Kangding Ray in real time on location.

The concept of SKALAR is based on Robert Plutchik’s psychoevolutionary theory of emotion that considers eight primary emotions: anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise, anticipation, trust, and joy. The combination of kinetic mirrors, perfectly synchronized moving lasers, a changing color palette, and a sophisticated multi-channel sound system triggers sensory and psychological reactions and offers a truly innovative way to experience and feel art.
