In the last few months I have been self-teaching about being better at mixing, EQing, compressing, using plug-ins, etc., trying to find the sound each instrument is supposed to make in harmony with others, on top of the sound that I want, and make it as professional as can be. So I’ve been watching workshops on Youtube, took notes and what not, toying with hertz and decibels, applying tips and theory on one of my songs, which I have planned to release this June. Worked very well... to an extent. I’m a curious, hard-working bloke. BUT, it’s long, it’s tedious, there’s billions of videos out there, and I am lacking guidance. Now what if I could meet a team of pro sound engineers who could share with me the essential tips and moves of their lifetime experience in a comprehensive masterclass, so as to save months, or years, of research? Save me another degree? What if they could give me weekly feedback on my own tracks, forever, and ever, and ever...?

Progress on the studio going more slowly than expected (due to Covid 19), but steady! The room is finished, I am getting instruments back in, finishing the room right next to it, my personal lounge/Frenchman’s cave (hint: there’s wine...), also soundproofed to the best of my abilities using homasote fiber panels. Finally received the London 12 acoustic panels room set today from Primacoustics. More goodies, surprise packets and pics coming soon!

Traveling a lot these last two months has definitely slowed down my recording/mixing endeavors a bit. Tough to record acoustics if you are not in the same room, town or country pretty much every week. Air b n bs. Lots of outside noise. Etc. What you are looking at here is the harbor of Capri. Well... There’s also the call of the beach... I won’t lie. 🙊

Still, I have completed 5 of the 9 modules of #musicianonamission while on the go and applied all knowledge to my forthcoming first truly polished non-demo self-produced single: “Song to the Fascist”. I have learnt a lot about building your own studio (can’t wait to be back home to do this), mic types and placement, the importance of how the source and room sounds, gear minimalism, gain staging, acoustic VS e-instruments, comping, realigning, pitch correcting, and quantizing. Moving on to actual mixing theory now that recording and editing is a check.

A class I would recommend for beginners so far. I learnt so much and the song is sounding the way I want to a little bit more every day.

My only reservations so far: 1 - I use Cubase 10 Pro and the class is much more Logic friendly, so I still end up on youtube a lot, trying to figure out how to do all this in my own DAW. 2 - The tips clearly seem to target much more a “heavily edited modern mainstream pop” type of sound than other genres. Still, all this is beneficial, if only to learn where to disagree (see previous post on quantization). More soon! 🦎
