Hal Dasar yang Tak Terpikirkan, Ternyata adalah Penyebab Masalahnya

Aku seorang technical support. Pekerjaanku seputar troubleshooting kendala user. Suatu hari ada seorang user yang kebutuhannya adalah membuat email profesional/ email dg domain sendiri. Semisal: namasaya@bisnissaya.com

Untuk kebutuhan tersebut, artinya user butuh untuk berlangganan domain (bisnissaya.com) dan juga berlangganan email hosting. Kedua produk tersebut adalah salah dua produk di perusahaanku.

Ketika sudah punya produk aktif, langkah pertama yang perlu user lakukan adalah add domain yang ingin dibuat jadi email dan memverifikasinya terlebih dahulu. Artinya user butuh melakukan pointing/ membuat record (dg value sesuai ketentuan kami) ke dalam DNS (Domain Name System) Manajernya.

Kendalanya: Domain 1 berhasil diverifikasi. Giliran domain 2, domain 3, dan domain 4 tak juga berhasil diverifikasi. Critanya user ingin membuat beberapa email profesional untuk beberapa domain.

Di proses itulah user menghubungi. Pertanyaannya: mengapa domain 2, 3, dan 4 tidak verified? Jk tidak verified, sudah pasti user tidak bisa lanjut ke langkah berikutnya. Jk tidak bisa lanjut ke langkah berikutnya, makin lama lagi proses agar email profesional bisa dibuat dan digunakan di webmailnya. Padahal user sudah menunggu 1x24 jam. *fyi terkadang ada proses propagasi DNS yg bisa beda-beda di setiap DNS (dalam hal ini user pake Cloudflare, biasanya tidak selama itu) oleh karenanya, user diminta menunggu max. 24 jam.

Beberapa hal coba aku cek

1. Cek domain di who.is registered. Aman

2. Cek di mxtoolbox.com, DNS sudah betul

3. Minta screenshot record user, record juga sudah oke

Sampai kehabisan ide dimana salahnya dan kureport issue tersebut ke tim.

4. Memastikan tidak ada spasi berlebih sudah

5. Hapus dan add record baru sudah

6. Memastikan tidak ada dobel record sudah

Semuanya sudah. Normalnya hasilnya tidak demikian karena tidak ada kendala di proses dan setup. But why ini nggak works?

Hingga akhirnya terkuak dimana salahnya dan itu sungguh membangongkan. Berasa sia2 energi ini karena tlah mikir kesana kemari cari dimana salahnya. Memastikan ini itu ke user. Chattingan dr siang ampe sore.

Mis nya adalah ketidaktahuan user bahwa yang namanya domain itu harus dimiliki. Harus dibeli dulu. Harus berlangganan.

Yang user lakukan adalah langsung add domain (aktif) tapi itu milik orang lain.

Otakku tidak sampai berpikir bahwa itu bukan punya user. Yang aku tau domain tersebut aktif. Itulah hal dasar yang tak terpikirkan.

Next, jika case sejenis, maka yang harus kupastikan "Boleh diinfokan doman tersebut dibeli dimana?" To make sure domain tersebut milik user.

Satu hal lg jk user ganti DNS "Apakah sudah setting NS (Name Server) dari DNS lama ke DNS yang baru? "

Fix your site Do When Things Go Wrong

The quality, quantity, and level of support you receive from your web host depends greatly on which host you choose and also on your own perception. I know of hosts that some people say provide terrible service, whereas others say the same hosts provide excellent service. Either way, your web host actually has little in the way of a mandate to support you with using the facilities it provides. As I explain in Chapter 1, your web host is more like a landlord who simply leases you space to use online. Problems with the bricks and mortar of that space are the host’s responsibility to deal with, but anything related to the website you create or anything you put in that space (or even to difficulties using the facilities provided by your host) are your responsibility, not the host’s. You wouldn’t ask your landlord for lessons on how to run a business or hang shelves on the wall, and many web hosts feel the same way about the basics of using your hosting account. And that’s why I have written this book — to help you resolve issues on your own. Some issues come up more than others. In this chapter, I explain what some of those are and what you can do to fix them if your host doesn’t help. It’s never a bad idea to ask for help. Some hosts help more than you might expect, whereas others refuse to help. Either way, you’re no worse off for asking. (Sometimes getting an answer just depends on whom you speak to, how you ask the question, and how busy the person is when you ask.) However, if your host won’t help, there are plenty of resource sites online where you can get answers to many of your questions, or your host may even offer to provide you training or fix the problem for a fee. This is normally an hourly rate, and you can expect it to be anywhere up to $100 per hour. Recognizing Common E-mail Issues

The biggest and easiest way to spot that there is a problem with your email is when you try and pick up your new mail and find you haven’t received any for a long period of time. That’s not a scientific method of detection, but not receiving e-mail, or getting reports from other people that they are not receiving e-mail from you, is a good indicator that something is wrong. Here are the top ways to tell there is something wrong with your e-mail: No new e-mail is received for an extended time. This may sound obvious, but just because you don’t have new e-mail when you switch on your computer doesn’t necessarily mean there is a problem. It may just be that nobody sent you an e-mail recently. If you have had your e-mail account for a while you’ll know how regularly new mail comes in, and if you haven’t had any for a period of time that would be unusual under normal circumstances then you know you should start checking into it. You attempt to send an e-mail and your computer reports that it failed to send it. Failing to send can occur as a result of a number of different issues, so read the error message carefully. Sometimes after you have sent e-mail, an “e-mail undeliverable” message appears in your mailbox. This message indicates that there is either a problem at your end or the recipient’s end. The failure message can be hard to decipher but can tell you which end the problem is at.

Sometimes friends, contacts, or colleagues contact you some other way other than via e-mail and tell you their messages are not getting through to you. The fault may be on their end, but you should ask them exactly what error message they are getting to ascertain which end the problem is at. The main causes of error messages are the following: Your site or server has been blacklisted. Your mailbox is full. On most web servers, you have to set a size for each mailbox. When your mailbox is full, new mail is rejected until you either clear some space or increase the size of the mailbox. To clear space, try emptying the trash folder or junk folder and go through and delete any mails you don’t need. A good way to clear a lot of space quickly is to find any e-mails that have large attachments, download the attachments to your computer, and then delete the email (and empty the trash folder). The mailbox does not exist. Yes, I’ve done this myself . . . and felt stupid when I did. Sometimes you might want to create a special email address for a particular project or event to help you collect all responses involving that project in one place. It’s easy to overlook actually creating the mailbox in the rush of marketing and sharing the new address to use. Mailboxes also sometimes get deleted by accident. It’s a good idea to check that the address actually exists! (See Figure 12-2.)

ssh <user>@<server_address | ip_address>

Step 2: Once you are logged in to your server you need to install certbot to process further

Certbot is not available in the default ubuntu repository. Run the below command to add ppa repository.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:certbot/certbot

Update packages using the below command.

sudo apt update

Run below command to install certbot

sudo apt install certbot

Check certbot which certboat is installed with below command

apt-cache policy certbot | grep -i Installed

Step 3: Now as we have certbot installed on our server we are able to generate a certificate , use below command to generate a wildcard certificate

sudo certbot certonly --manual -d *.<your_domain> -d <your_domain> --agree-tos --no-bootstrap --manual-public-ip-logging-ok --preferred-challenges dns-01 --server

https://acme-v02.api.letsencrypt.org/directory

Here you need to replace <your_domain> with your original domain. For eg: xyz.com. In the process we have --preferred-challenges dns-01 there are other options available if you want to try go to reference https://letsencrypt.org/docs/challenge-types/

Step 4: In this process, you will be asked to add TXT Record in your DNS.

For that, you need to login to your DNS(Domain Provider like Bigrock, GoDaddy and more) account.

Then find DNS records management panel, this depends on your domain provider system.

Add TXT records given in the last step like below

Name: <your_domain>

Value: _acme-challenge=<value_generated_by_above_command>

You can test whether TXT Records Added on DNS or not on => https://mxtoolbox.com/

You need to follow this process two times. it will verify that you are the owner of the domain which you claim or acting as owner and then it will generate certificates for your domain with a validity of 3 months

Step 5: Add Certificates to your engine yard

Login to your engine yard account

From tools dropdown select SSL certificate

Click button named and Add SSL Certificate 

Add Name for your certificate so you can identify. 

Select radio button named ‘Upload SSL Certificate’ 

In SSL Certificate Text Area add the certificate from a file generated in the last step named Fullchain.pem

View content of that file with below command [ in ssh logged in terminal ]

sudo cat /etc/letsencrypt/live/unimedliving.com/fullchain.pem

In SSL Certificate Key Text Area add the certificate from a file generated in the last step named privkey.pem

View content of that file with below command [ in ssh logged in terminal ]

sudo cat /etc/letsencrypt/live/unimedliving.com/privkey.pem

Finally, Click on add certificate it will take some time to appear this certificate for the selection.

You have added a certificate in your engine yard now you need to assign that certificate to your web app.

Go to the Dashboard of engine yard

Select the app in which you want to assign SSL Certificate

In SSL section you can see the option called ‘Assign SSL Certificate to <your app>’

From SSL Certificate dropdown select the certificate you named uniquely.

Then click on update SSL Settings

All things are set and done now you only need to click ‘Apply’ button

After your changes applied to your environment you can check that your app is now SSL Protected.

You can perform SSL test on -> https://www.whynopadlock.com/

You can use the same process for renewing your certificate after 90 days. If you use single domain SSL you can make this process automated by adding the script, but for wildcard domains, you can not perform automated process because it requires DNS Challenge to perform, in future there might be a way to do these challenges automated as well. We will update our blog if such a technique developed.

I am in the process of of migrating all of my Linodes to Digital Ocean and I was hoping someone could provide some guidance. Last night I migrated my first Linode to Digital Ocean with the domain with no problems whatsoever, it was a 10 minute process.

After that I created my second droplet and repeated the same steps as I did for the first one but I can’t manage to get the domain to successfully transfer to that droplet. I changed the name servers from linode to digital ocean and I linked the domain to the new dropplet. I also deleted that domain from my Linode account, however that Linode is somehow still serving that domain if I power that Linode back up.

When I look up the domain name on mxtoolbox.com it says it is linked to the digital ocean droplet ip address which leads me to believe that the propagation is complete, is that wrong?

The droplet I created is a Dokku image so to deploy I add “`git add remote dokku dokku@dokku.me:dokku.me“` but when I git push dokku master it still tries to connect to my linode ip address.

I erased that IP address from my ~/.ssh/known_hosts file as well as the domain name entry in that file and I also cleared the local DNScache from my mac.

What am I missing? Do I just need to wait for the propagation to finish?

iCloud.com emails not receiving emails

We currently have over 30K users and all email services work perfectly and don't flag our emails at all. Office 365 IP Black listed and email marked spam by Yahoo/AOL

Emails being sent from one of our Office 365 tenancy is going to spam for Yahoo/AOL mailbox. We contacted the Yahoo support and as per their update, the IP address used by Office 365 servers are currently blacklisted, hence all emails from this IP goes to spam. 

 We have done several testing by sending emails with just content "test" and most of the time it goes to spam in Yahoo. The header in each email has below tag and the IP address is blacked listed by BACKSCATTERER.

 We raised this with Office 365 support [Ticket #:11813136] and below was the response received. 

 "As discussed, after analysing the headers collected from recipient end, we found that the emails are not considered as SPAM:

spamdiagnosticmetadata NSPM 

The emails are being marked as Bulk by Yahoo:

X-YahooFilteredBulk 23.103.133.148 

You will have to check with Yahoo to find why those emails are being marked as Bulk whereas you are not sending bulk emails.

 Please, can you let me know why we should be contacting Yahoo to unblock a dozen IP addresses belonging to Microsoft? Also let me know the reason why everytime an email is sent from our tenancy gets a blacklisted IP address assigned. Even a blank message sent with a subject "test" is going to spam. So this has nothing to do with content.
