101 - Social Media, its use in the Zeitgeist and Personal Reflections
It is no secret that I have had a rocky and turbulent relationship with social media over the years. I have been through all emotions with it, from loving it to completely loathing what it is and what it can do to a person. The idea of being connected to many people digitally seems like a good idea, but it brings up a multitude of emotions which cannot be ignored. Surely the idea of being connected to people you know, and people you don’t would be a fantastic opportunity to network and share experiences? For me, this hasn’t entirely been the case.
To see where I am coming from, I must talk about my own social media history and where it started for me to be where I am today. The first social media site I signed up for was Facebook, all the way back in 2009 when I was 14 years old. It was amazing, I was able to talk to people that I knew in primary school which I hadn’t seen since I moved to the other end of the country a few years prior. And, as a teenager, most things in life are new and exciting - I had no idea how it would come to affect me at the time. Not long after in November 2009, I signed up for Twitter. This was a different kettle of fish, with Twitter being a lot more open to different people, even celebrities and people of a certain notoriety. At the time, these were massive deals and social media was really up and coming as something that most people didn’t really have. Even at this time it was in its infancy. I think I also signed up for Bebo, but that was as useful as a chocolate teapot. Having these sites are all well and good, only if you have people to know and add. At 14, I didn’t really have any friends and even then, felt alienated from my contemporaries because I didn’t feel that I fitted in amongst the crowd - I had ‘friends’, but they never felt true. This carried on for many years throughout my teens, using Facebook and Twitter and even thinking then why on earth I was doing what I was doing. Around 2011/2012, I signed up for Instagram which became the biggest bugbear in my time on social media, which went through multiple iterations and accounts.
Eventually, I deleted my first Facebook account but was quickly resurrected. I wanted to break free from the digital shackles but never could pluck up the courage, which looking back at that way of thinking is completely absurd. How can one not have the courage to not use a particular website, unless they are addicted to it? This brings into question the very reason why one would use social media. Are they keeping in contact with friends and family they don’t have immediate access to, or are they intentionally manipulated to keep them on the site? Social media websites are intentionally created in such a way to increase time on site, so that they can create more money and keep afloat. These sites are made so that you become addicted to refreshing the page and hoping that a little red circle pops up with a number on it displaying how many notifications are on it. It starts to turn into a digital slot machine, pulling the lever and anticipating a winning number. They are essentially digital Skinner Boxes. For years, I did this because unbeknownst to me, I was addicted to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I was wasting time by flicking through feeds, looking at people’s status’ whom I didn’t care for, but did it anyway, for hours. Then I would switch to Instagram and fall into the abyss that is the explore page, which is just a chasm of useless flashy images relating to what you react with. Then I’d switch to seeing people’s stories and seeing what they were up to or sharing. Twitter would rear its head and I’d see what was happening in the world.
This went on for too long and I started to become listless and filled with malaise. This was the start of me becoming wary of what social media was doing to me, which was only around 2016/2017. Even though that was a number of years ago now, it still went on until rather recently when I would uninstall all social media apps from my phone to ease my TOS and not waste so much time. But, I kept hanging on by a thread because I had become so dependent on scrolling and endlessly scrolling uselessly. I hated the fact that I detested these sites yet still crawled back to them and not using them to my advantage. Instead, I was wasting my time by ingesting images and information that was of no use to me such as people from school I hadn’t seen in years having children, estranged friends showing their new car modifications and sunny beach photos. Why do I need to see this? I don’t care about these people and what they’re doing with their lives, especially when they are doing much better than me. For most of my life, I have had to deal with depression and anxiety, which would often lead to derealisation from my surroundings and depersonalisation. Scrolling for hours made me feel even less of a human than felt before logging on - something had to change.
Eventually, I gradually weaned myself off of social media by deleting apps from my phone, and not allowing my browsers to save my login details so that I had to type everything out, acting as a form of deterrent. This partly worked, but I still relapsed for a lack of a better term. But the only way that I could stop using it is to completely deactivate and eradicate these accounts and apps from my life. It wasn’t until November 2020 that I was able to do it properly with Instagram, deleting my personal account and not looking back. I decided to keep my professional account because it is a platform where my work is shown and can be used for my career. But more on that in a later paragraph. Twitter was also next to go, firstly deleting all tweets, profile picture and cover photo just in case I needed the account for something. Twitter had become a dangerously caustic cesspit of political opinions and grossly misinformed ideas. I didn’t want that kind of negativity in my life whilst I was taking action and bettering my mental wellbeing, so it had to go. This for me was my most bittersweet encounter with deleting any social media account, as it had survived over 11 years with being relatively active. Yet the cons out weighed the pros, so it was laid to rest in February 2021. Facebook was revived for me after many years of not using it, but this was because I had to participate in the third year closed group during Lockdown in March 2020. This is still live, and mainly used for SU work. Reddit is also a site that I use from time to time, with an account I made 2015. This is a site I don’t view as social media and is a good resource for helpful information and communities. There are areas to avoid such as the Tik-Tok filled subreddits containing useless videos and pictures, but for the most part are useful in the right instances.
My professional Instagram account is the only account that survived my social media purge because of the ability to share my work, network with industry professionals and follow people who are of key interest. I haven’t posted on this account since November 2020, but occasionally post a story about recent happenings such as being included in the Photograd Conjunction zine and to generally check in. My recent project work hasn’t been shared on this account yet, and will be once I am ready to show what I have been doing. It has been rather nice not to have any pressure and thinking I should be creating work for my followers instead of myself, because for a time I did think that. I was hung up on how many likes a post would get and how the audience was engaging, and if it was bad I would think again about what I was doing. I soon realised that it didn’t matter and I wasn’t happy with what I was creating, so I focused on myself rather than the audience on ones and zeros.
I think that social media is inherently bad, and can have profound effects on one's mental health which can be extremely dangerous to the right, or wrong person. Whilst I do think that social media is terrible, and not having any access to it is massively freeing, it can certainly be useful in the right application. Professionally, I feel that is a must in the day and age, with everything becoming more digitally connected and employers potentially seeing what you are up to in the digital world. I feel that the way of using social media is very important, and should be used as a tool instead of a time wasting method and mindlessly scrolling the hours away. I was unhappy for a long time, and some of that can be attributed to social media and its use in my life. By cutting the chain from myself to the anchor which was social media, I feel less like a scrolling robot with a blank stare into a screen and more like a human being - as much as I can in this digital landscape. As we have become more digitally connected, I felt more disconnected from the people around me, which has been heightened since the pandemic and not being able to see family and friends. The added benefit of not having any personal social media accounts, there is so much free time for me to do what I like with.
Instead of looking blankly at the screen at things that I cared zilch for, I can get on with more important things such as doing work for my MA, cleaning the house, walking, listening to music and doing mindfulness activities. In this strange digital wasteland of a landscape, I think it is a good idea to take a step back and think about how social media affects one’s life. If it is negative, then it is possibly time to either have a break, or completely cut ties with it. If it is of no use and only contains negativity, then why keep it? If you can’t use it to your own benefit and get something positive, then it is of little use. Just like a lot of things, it is a tool, such as the mobile phone. I don’t think that smartphones are bad, it is just how they are used by the majority. They are incredibly powerful tools which are pocket computers, which used correctly can be invaluable. It took me a long time to realise that they aren’t a bad thing, it is just how they are used. If things are too complicated and messy, forms of digital minimalism is a good route to take. By keeping phones free of mess, social media apps and old documents, they can be powerful tools which can be very useful in a multitude of settings. The fact that I have a handheld camera, notepad, encyclopedia, music player, video player which can also take phone calls, text messages and emails still blows my mind. Instead of using the phone as a time wasting tool, make use of its abilities and improve workflow and benefit oneself. The only downside is that we are still slaves to technology which is so deeply ingrained in society now that it cannot be undone unless something catastrophic happens which renders all technology useless.
In short, social media can be extremely caustic and to be used with caution. If one wants to blindly keep scrolling autonomously with no thoughts - be my guest. But, if you want to use it to your advantage, you can change how it is used just by taking the plunge and not looking back. For now, my professional account will be just so and the app shan’t be on my phone and only accessible via my browser needing my login details. It allows me to have a place where I can show work, talk to certain people and potentially have clients find me or vice versa. Yet, social media is where some of my alienation stems from for me, as people blindly stare into their phones giving short grunted answers to questions as their thumbs manoeuvre them through an arid wasteland of memes and cultural detritus. I used to be one of those people, and it is horrible to see people become so distant and withdrawn looking at lolcats and dancing imbeciles. In the end, I felt like I wasn’t a human being and something had to change, as I became withdrawn from my very being on this rock hurtling through the void. But who is to blame: The person for being suckered into the app with little to no ability of self control, or the developers for intentionally creating the app in such a way that a person can’t look elsewhere and has to come back?

How to make separate Work and Personal Profiles with the New Microsoft Edge on Beyonce's Internet
I'm a long time Chrome user but have been slowly finding myself using the new Edge (Edgium?) and am now basically living in it full time.
Why?
My work use O365/M365 logins and it is great with a "Work profile" and "Personal profile" that keeps EVERYTHING separate.
It even has a "open link as Work/Personal" right click menu that I use WAY more often than I would have thought.
It'll auto switch you to Work or Personal logins when you end up getting a OneDrive link or are logging into Azure.
Runs on my last Windows 7 machine through my Windows 10 machines, and <GASP> since it syncs everything AND has work/personal profiles I use it on my iPhone 11 Max.
But the main reason? I really like the way it deals with PWAs - Progressive Web Apps. Basically "make this website an app." I'll pretend if you pretend. You can use Outlook, Twitter, Gmail, Teams, TONS of websites as apps that are no-install. They all still run in Edge (with the Chromium heart) but they are pinned to your taskbar and/or start menu. A bunch of folks on my team legit don't install Office or Teams anymore. They use all of Office.com as a PWA. I was surprised but it works.
Here's some of my installed PWAs/apps:
If I visit Twitter.com for example and click the Circle with the Plus inside it in the URL bar, I'll see this.
Once it's "installed" I can pin it and run it and it looks like this in the taskbar. Four of these apps are PWAs with Edge. Gmail's icon is lame and old looking. They should fix that for their PWA.
Lovely.
Making custom Pinned Edge icons with Profiles
I mentioned profiles before. Here's mine. I have no idea why I bothered to hide the emails.
The picker is nice, but I actually wanted TWO DIFFERENT EDGES pinned to my Taskbar. A Work and a Personal Edge. I find it easier to compartmentalize and easier than switching.
UPDATE: It seems as of a recent version of Edge you can just open Edge the usual way, switch to the Profile you want, then right click the running Edge in your Taskbar and "Pin to Taskbar" and you'll get your custom Edge with the Profile Directory switch correctly configured! Super convenient. That means the manual steps below are not needed unless you want to understand the internals, add a custom switch (which can also be done from Properties), or apply a custom icon.
Right click your Desktop and say New Shortcut from the right click menu.
Put this in the location box above but change USERNAME to the right one for YOUR folder structure. And note --profile-directory. You can find your Profile folders in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge SxS\User Data. Mine are Profile 1 and 2, where 1 is my first Personal one and 2 is Work. Check yours and do the right thing. Note also the msGuidedSwitchAllowed switch that is optional. That tells you if you want Edge to suggest another profile if you visit a website that you really need your Work (or anotherr profile) logged in for.
"C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge SxS\Application\msedge.exe" --profile-directory="Profile 2" --enable-features=msGuidedSwitchAllowed
Paste this in and hit Next, then Name the shortcut. If you like, use an Icon Editor and make a custom icon overlay for your work or personal Edge so you can tell the difference! I like Liquid Icon for simple editing or Greenfish Icon Editor.
I thought about using the Microsoft logo as an overlay for work but instead chose Beyoncé, so it's Edge for Werk.
Since it's a custom profile it can have a custom icon. Edge will make one for you you can use with YOUR face in your Profile X folder as mentioned above. Now my Desktop has two Edge icons, just like I like it.
I can also have the Canary (early builds), Dev version, or Stable Edge pinned. Lots of choices.
This makes it easy for me to run and keep track of what context I'm running in when I'm using a personal machine for Work.
Also note if you go to edge://settings/profiles/multiProfileSettings you can decide which profile a new URL external link will open with! You can also turn off Auto profile switching if you like.
All this, plus PWAs has made my browsing on Beyoncé's Internet quite nice lately.

Tumblr media
this is a guide made to help everyone use the most recent technology in rp conversations. several people in the rp i’m in have mentioned being confused about how to work discord and the different features it has. so, this is based on the most recent update to discord. i didn’t go over how to actually type out a chat, i would hope you could figure that part out for yourself. warning: this is a very screenshot heavy post. okay... lettuce begin.
WHAT IS THE DISCORD APP ??
discord is a chat site similar to skype, aim, or google hangouts. it is unique in the fact that it was intended to be used as a game coop chat, and it is completely free with little to no ads! there is a mobile app, a desktop app, and the plain old site. it is also compatible with macs in the case that you have apple products. for the sake of this tutorial, i will be using the desktop app, but all of your settings will transfer over to the website and mobile app versions of your discord.
FOR ADMINS WANTING TO SET UP A GROUP DISCORD: please consider watching this tutorial video, which goes over how to mess with server settings and functions.
FOR MUNS WANTING TO RP ON DISCORD: check out this ask i answered to learn about 1x1.
SETTING UP AN ACCOUNT + BASICS !!
to set up an account you will need an email to verify the account. i used an email that i attach to most of my rp blogs, but you could create a specific email for discord. setting up an account is a little different depending on if you’re doing it on the website or the desktop app.
for the website:
1. go to the discordapp website and select the “open discord” button.
Tumblr media
2. it will ask you to write a username, create one that is related to anything you would like it to be. i personally wouldn’t use the name of a specific character as your discord name (and i’ll go over why in a second)
Tumblr media
3. it will then open the discord website version, and at the top there will be a banner that says:
Tumblr media
4. after clicking “claim account” you will be sent to this portion of the settings screen, input a value for the email and the password section so you can keep your account.
Tumblr media
for the desktop app (if you selected “download for windows” on the website:
1. you’ll want to click the “register new account” button at the bottom of the login screen.
Tumblr media
2. it will then open to a screen that looks remarkably similar to the one on the settings page. all you’ll need to do from here is input information and then go verify your email.
Tumblr media
now, discord will guide you through setting up a personal server (which you can delete if you think you’ll never use it), but i’ll go over that in the next section. let’s first talk about settings.
“setting” yourself up for success:
1. getting to the settings is really easy, just go to the bottom of the server information sidebar, and click the cogwheel.
Tumblr media
2. you’ll open on the my account page, which looks something like this.
Tumblr media
3. if you click on edit, you’ll be able to change your personal icon, your username, your password, and save it all.
Tumblr media
4. next is privacy and safety. this will all depend on how safe you feel with the people you’re interacting with. you can allow dms from people in similar servers, you can have discord scan messages that could be nsfw or harmful, and you can edit who will be able to add your discord id as their friend. my settings are pretty laxed, but if you want to change that please do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. i skipped over authorized apps, but you can look into that here it’s a tool for bot use. i will be going over the “connections” tab, though. on this one you can select one of their given apps, and add it to discord for integrations. a lot of twitch streamers use this to help connect the people that use their servers with their video gaming experience. you can attach skype, twitter, reddit, twitch, steam, and more. this is more for discord video gamer users, though.
Tumblr media
6. overlay is more for settings related to how you see users in the servers. do you want to see their icons/display names? it is easier to distinguish others if you turn these settings on to display the information.
Tumblr media
7. for notifications you can turn the desktop notifications on or off, the specific sounds you want to hear, and whether you want to have text-to-speech for the desktop notifications. i’ll get into how to specifically turn off notifications for specific servers in the next section.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. keybinds are simply keyboard shortcuts. i don’t have any enabled, but if you want to edit this yourself, give it a go, my friend.
Tumblr media
9. text and images is helpful if you would rather not see a preview of links, and also can keep your FPS from dropping if you turn off the preview of images.
Tumblr media
10. appearance is another important thing with discord. change the settings to make the look most comfortable to you! there is a light and dark theme option, a way to change up the font and so much more! play around with it and see how it looks to you in the preview.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
11. some other sections i wouldn’t mess with unless you’re also going to use it for video gaming are the streamer mode, games, and discord nitro. these are all more focused around streamers and gamers.
SERVERS, DMS, AND PERMISSIONS, OH MY !!
now that you’ve got your account all set up, discord will take you through a bit of a tutorial until you join a different server with more people in it. a lot of rps now are creating group servers, so it might be nice to have an account to . you could also just use it to add other people in the rpc and chat with them! since i won’t really be going over creating an advanced server, please take a look at this tutorial. let’s go over joining a server or adding some friends.
joining a server or creating one:
1. select the plus button on the sidebar.
Tumblr media
2. it will pop up with another message, and you’ll want to click “join server”
Tumblr media
3. it will ask you for a join link on the next page, ask the person who’s server you’re trying to join for this. or maybe admins will provide you with an instant invite link which will add you... instantly.
Tumblr media
to get a server link:
1. click the arrow next to the server title to bring down a drop down menu.
Tumblr media
2. in the drop down menu there should be an “invite people” option.
Tumblr media
3. it will then pop up with a link that you can copy and paste to send to people. if you hit “never let link expire” then you can keep reusing the link for everyone. otherwise, each link has a day long limit to be used.
Tumblr media
4. if you click the cogwheel on the link information pop up, it will give you another pop up of settings that you can edit.
Tumblr media
so now you know how to join a server, but how do you create one? i’ve already linked above how to get more complicated with server settings, but heres the basics of creating one.
creating a server:
1. click that little + in the circle again.
2. this time we’re going to select the “create a server” option.
Tumblr media
3. once on that, a menu will pop up with several options on what you want your server be like, just make it what you want it to be, my friend.
Tumblr media
4. then hit “create” and boom you have a server! as the main admin you can assign roles, nicknames, add more channels to the server for specific conversations etc. for more on that please check this little tutorial and this one too.
you now know how to join and create servers, but what about server settings? this mostly applies to if you own a server, but can also apply to if you’re just in a server with some permissions given to you.
nicknames:
1. in the same drop down bar that you can get to invite people from, there will be an option that says “nickname.” this is a setting that allows you to change your name in each server your a part of to distinguish yourself. it will also replace just showing the username you chose for yourself initially, so if you chose something that doesn’t have your name you can let others know what it is in a nickname.
Tumblr media
2. once you click nickname it will come up with what you want to change your name. an rp might ask you to make your nickname something like your moniker and your character name (an example would be “margot // poppy sinclair,” “margot (poppy sinclair),” “margot - poppy sinclair,” or “margot / poppy sinclair.”
Tumblr media
okay, now here are just the general settings for a server and what you can edit with all that stuff.
server settings and what they do:
1. to open server settings go to that same dropdown menu i’ve mentioned twice now.
Tumblr media
2. it will open on the basic server overview settings. you can change the name of the server here, or adjust an afk channel (which i don’t find necessary, so i wouldn’t mess with the setting but you could), and set how you want your general users to get notifications (they can change this setting by themselves too).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. i would only mess with moderation settings if you’re worried about members getting out of hand in the messages. if not, leave it on the casual moderation settings already set as the default.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. audit log is basically a history of everything that’s been changed, added, or deleted on the server. you can’t really mess with this setting much, but it’s helpful to know what’s happened on your server.
Tumblr media
5. roles are something only an admin can edit, but they’re cool too. you can set several settings with this, which i won’t be going over for the sake of keeping this short. if you’d like to know more on setting roles read through this. adding a role is like a tiny badge that tells you a bit more about the specific person and what permissions they have in the group.
Tumblr media
6. emojis are custom emojis that you’ll be able to use within your server. there is a slot for fifty of them, so you can create your own as a mod, or there is a permission that allows people to create emojis too.
Tumblr media
7. invites shows you how many links to invite have been created and how long the link will last.
Tumblr media
8. i didn’t go over a few of the settings, that’s because they are more targetted to gamers or they’re easier to understand if you want to look at members or who’s been banned from the server.
personal notification and privacy settings:
1. same drop down menu on the server. and click “notification settings,” obviously.
Tumblr media
2. these are my personal settings, i usually only allow notifications for mentions in large servers. because unless you’re going to be in a very small group, your messages are going to be blowing up zero to a hundred real quick!
Tumblr media
3. go back to the drop down and select “privacy settings.”
Tumblr media
4. now choose whether you want to allow people from a group to dm you or not. i leave this on, that way if i’m in a group rp and i want to plot on discord or need to talk to someone then i can get dms. maybe you’re not cool with that, and it’s totally fine! just change it to your personal preferences.
Tumblr media
server settings are easy enough, you just need to get the hang of it. alright, now moving to dms and how to add singular friends.
how to add friends:
1. click the symbol on the sidebar that has three little people.
Tumblr media
2. make sure your on the tab with the little guy raising his hand.
Tumblr media
3. then you’ll want to put the discordtag of the person your adding into the box. here’s the thing, you need to include the number in there, too, or else it won’t add them!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. select “send friend request” and wait until your accepted as a friend! once you’ve been added, you can start a dm by going to the “all” tab.
Tumblr media
5. click the profile of the friend you want to dm.
Tumblr media
6. their information will now show up in the “direct messages” sidebar, and you can interact with them.
Tumblr media
now that you’ve got some friends, message them, add them to your servers, be added to their servers, whatever floats your boat!
EXTRA TIDBITS + WHAT THEY DO !!
now you know the basics of how discord works, but there are a ton of tiny buttons that might not  make sense when first going through. so, let’s explain what each of these small buttons do and why they’re there.
icons on the tiny profile, under the server information:
Tumblr media
1. the microphone allows you to mute/unmute yourself if you’re ever in a voice channel, toggling this on and off will enable whether others can hear you or not.
2. the headphone set is a toggle option for whether you want to still hear or “deafen” yourself to what others are saying inside a vovice channel.
3. the cogwheel opens to the discord profile settings and your own personal settings (not a server’s settings).
icons on the header over a server/dm:
Tumblr media
1. the bell toggles on and off whether you want to receive any notifications from the server you’re in. if you turn this on, then you will recieve no notifications at all even for messages that had your mention in them.
2. the pushpin is for pinned messages. moderators may have the ability to select certain messages to be “pinned,” and by doing this very important information can be kept in one place. that way you won’t have to go sifting through all the messages to look back at a certain one.
3. the user icon is another toggle button. this time it toggles whether or not you see the list of members in a server on the sidebar to the right.
4. the search function can look for keywords to find a specific message you may have lost a long time ago.
icons on the header over a server/dm continued:
Tumblr media
1. the at symbol is a quick way to look through all the messages you might have been mentioned in. you can set it to show your mentions in just the specific server, or every single one of them. an example of that looks like this:
Tumblr media
2. the question mark is the help desk for all things discord. if this guide didn’t answer everything, then i’m sure that the help icon can give you more answers.
in chat commands and emojis:
if you would like to access text formatting in chat, here are all the commands:
ITALICS: *your text here*
UNDERLINE ITALICS: __*your text here*__
BOLDED: **your text here**
UNDERLINE BOLDED: __**your text here**__
BOLDED ITALICS: ***your text here***
UNDERLINED BOLDED ITALICS: __***your text here***__
UNDERLINED: __your text here__
to know how to use in chat and custom emojis, check out this guide.
i know this was really a screenshot heavy guide, but hopefully it gave you insight on how to work the app (which it’s mostly the same on all three platforms). have fun and hope you join the discord revolution! my inbox is always open if there are any remaining questions on the app and what it’s all about!

New games in the second-tier network: Satoshi Nakamoto's game calls for the Lightning Network to brand-new heights
The Bitcoin Layer 2 network is appreciated for its speed and scalability, looked after really helps to implement some interesting new smart contract features. In this respect, the micro-transaction feature has also inspired electronic asset holders to develop and adopt Lightning System Programs (LApps). These apps possess subverted content material tokenization (using Y 'alls and LNCast) to privacy-friendly texts (such as LnSMS and Receive Text message). Although these earlier applications were mainly utilized as proof-of-concept prototypes, they did not have many advantages over centralized user-friendly applications. They produced new ways to circumvent the rules and conventions of the older entire world. Through these apps, personal privacy and sovereignty have been amplified as never before, and it is only a matter of time prior to the snowball effect and getting the focus of mainstream interest. At the Magic Crypto conference, Lightning Labs CEO Elizabeth Stark praised the vigorous growth of LApps in her panel debate, and she emphasized the most basic difference with similar DApps: LApps possess a faster consumer base growth, that leads to faster app speeds. "The quickness of development is certainly shocking. I didn't expect it to happen so fast. I like to see individuals build related apps on the Lightning System. In other communities, they're all'developer, developer, programmer' It's a slogan, but nobody is actually making use of Dapp. On the Lightning System, people are deploying it, and everyone will participate and interact." Moreover, because the development quickness of Lightning Network technology often exceeds the quantity of information which can be processed at once, it is very important to possess high-quality applications inside Lightning applications. Furthermore, there might be "killer apps" on the Lightning System which are needed through the entire Bitcoin field. I am hoping that at least one product in this evaluation can attract everyone's attention. Satoshi Nakamoto's game If we assume that Atari's former video game programmer Hal Finne is Satoshi Nakamoto (Satoshi Nakamoto) is behind the pseudonym, then the creator of Bitcoin may also develop pixelated artwork similar to Satoshi Nakamoto's game content. In short, Satoshi Nakamoto's game is friendly to the Lightning Network. The game is similar to flash game websites such as Miniclip, Pogo and Newgrounds. The game is easy but addictive. Many of these video games imitated Super Mario World (Super Mario World) Mario World, Minecraft, the Legend of Zelda Zelda), "Bejeweled" (Bejeweled), "Agar" and "Flappy Bird" and other game mechanics. Carlos Roldan (@whiteyhat), the programmer of Satoshi Nakamoto's game, told us: "Satoshi Nakamoto's game is special since it reminds gamers of the past." "Presently, retro arcade video games aren't so common or even popular. If you combine these nostalgic video game elements with Bitcoin and the lightning environment, you can get a match up manufactured in heaven. This is a programmer in the 1980s and 1990s What we dream of." Thoughts is broken asked to cover the entrance charge of 1 1,000 satoshis, the novelty of the LApp becomes apparent. Even if you are unwilling to cover and only desire to try quite a few totally free versions of the game, it is possible to immerse yourself within the text-structured adventure story "Legend of Satoshi Nakamoto", and test your survival abilities through the Bitcoin version of Minecraft (BCraft) (This is actually the 2D version of Minecraft), or it is possible to explore the sky of alien planets. Unfortunately, these are the only real two Bitcoin-themed video games, because the other two video games ("Skulldude" and the golden axe-inspired "the Lair) does not have any narrative or visible adaptation to imply that they are related to Satoshi Nakamoto. When you have a recharge cards with thousands of Satoshi, you will discover more interesting games The true fun is to begin by paying 1000 Satoshi and steadily explore the advantages of becoming a true member. This is not investment guidance, and you'll even regret investing your BTC. Nonetheless, what you purchase can support a small development group to invest a lot of time and energy in this project. Users can use Lightning Wallet, Joule web browser extension or even Blockstack common login cleansing to complete the required small transactions. LApps become interconnected by giving mutual support, which is very worthy of attention, which collaborative approach may also promote the entire wave of technological innovation. It only takes a couple of seconds to complete a small transaction (during writing, the worthiness of a small transaction is 11 cents), as soon as you become a real member, a retro-looking dashboard can look. Here, it is possible to set your own nickname, purchase a different account picture, or become a senior supporter with voting rights and the proper to use tournaments (more upon this later). It is possible to certainly spend several satoshis to make custom results, but if you are like me, you can be wanting to explore the top features of advanced games. Maybe, you just want to play mini video games, then you can certainly visit a replica game of "Jewellery Array" with the theme of Bitcoin mining, one imitating "Flappy" Bird" game, or a game adapted from "Super Mario World" where Satoshi Nakamoto changed Princess Beech, etc. The win or lack of the game depends on how well an individual plays. The charm of the game itself is not in the form of expression or technical realization, but in a novel perspective. In the two video games listed, being truly a good player can help you have more Bitcoin benefits. And given that they provide very different functions and mechanisms, they're most likely the best reason to pay to become a member (I eventually spend lots of time enjoying them, therefore i will get many additional benefits). For example, in "Super Bro", one game point equals one satoshi. Like many readers, I was raised playing Nintendo's super video games. In this respect, "Super Bros." is a superb retro game. It offers some textures, backgrounds and computer animation techniques that will enable you to get back to the times of enjoying "Super Mario World". Conceptually, the game is easy: After the user passes all the cards, the rest of the bitcoins and the adventure rewards collected during the game will undoubtedly be delivered to the wallet within small bitcoins. I spent a lot more than 20 hours doing offers and listening to music. During this period, I had been rewarded with about 20,000 Satoshis.
"Super Bros" actor and Casa CEO Jeremy Welch is remarkably similar. This game will need you by way of a random journey and knowledge varying levels of difficulty. Occasionally your game is as simple as strolling in the recreation area. At other moments, you can be attacked by a band of goomba divided by many deadly traps. This adaptation of "Super Mario World" is fun and addictive-plus, you have a strong financial incentive to return and play it every day. Basically, gamers can wait for Satoshi factors to accumulate during the break, and simply earn back the entrance charge of 1 1,000 Satoshi. In fact, it is easy to suppose gamers in establishing countries might find a income source in "Super Bros.", just as some players nevertheless grow coins in "Wow." The distinction is certainly that BTC units are usually scarce and may become more valuable over time. However, games aren't all of candy or bitcoin benefits. The handle of the game is much worse than what you saw in the original Nintendo game in 1991. The jumping mechanism can sometimes become your worst enemy, and different levels can quickly become boring. Although "Super Mario World" is much more interesting than "Super Bros", it isn't built on a cutting-edge payment system that can provide financial benefits. You can find always trade-offs.
Tumblr media
Lightning Network Edition Golf ball Battle
Just like the power struggle within the Netflix hit "House of Cards", Agar.io is a multiplayer video game adapted from "Taking in Crazy". It borrowed the system of "big seafood eat small seafood, small seafood will grow larger", and finally transformed it into circular particles moving on a big world map. On the other hand, the ball-to-ball battle on the Lightning Network is a challenge game where users must pay 1000 online Satoshi involves purchase membership. If you happen to eat another participant, you then will receive a prize of 750 Satoshi-so if your goal is to make BTC through the game, after that you have to eat at least two gamers on the map. From a technical point of view, there is absolutely no difference between Agar.io and Lightning Online. The only two main differences are reputation (the free game version is popular, with hundreds of players constantly competing) and financial incentives (that is more of a credit card applicatoin and growth concern). Once individuals understand the simpleness of the LApp, they will definitely become more ready to accept additional challenges. Some financial incentives can be used to unlock their abilities.
We played on the Lightning Network version of the ball game for about one hour, and there have been only two other players around. Soon, I eliminated one of these. After eating so many vibrant dots, I grew to become an unstoppable whale. Considering its multiplayer character, the game is quite boring if you have no competitors. You may occupy 25% of the game map, but you'll be looking forward to challenges and enjoyment. For me, this is an interesting lesson concerning the necessity of capitalism and competition (Once, I deliberately put into multiple circles to help other gamers eat my smaller sized part, and I could become bigger). Privileged function If Satoshi Nakamoto's video games become your day-to-day habit, and you desire to unlock the functions, then you have to pay a supplementary 500,000 Satoshi. After paying, you'll get the proper to vote for potential future development, and you'll be allowed to take part in tournaments, you can earn more bitcoins, and you will become a first-class citizen in the game kingdom. Paid users may also receive many customization features that distinguish consumer profiles from other profiles. On the one hand, users provide more support for developers, in exchange, users will get more rights. Furthermore, in "Super Bros", users will have 3 extra lives at the beginning of each game (in any other case each life will cost 500 satoshis), buying 1000 satoshis can increase the final quantity of bitcoin benefits. For example, usually you can earn 500 satoshis by the end of the game prize accumulation, so right now your Bitcoin accumulation prize should raise to 2000 satoshis. Somewhat, your expense in reduced account makes sense only if you are ready to spend lots of time enjoying LApps games. Interested friends can visit: My prediction Nakamoto's game is not commendable since it is a personal game based on creating consumer experience. Due to the complex platform supplied by LApps, interesting economic incentives, and the willingness to integrate other apps such as Joule and Blockstack, the LApps series has earned a location in the spotlight. There is sufficiently content to please make sure to everyone who likes retro video gaming, and you can find enough reasons for you to return to the past every day and go through the feeling of returning to the early 1990s. Furthermore, the survey shows that you will have more content in the future, and the community will determine the priority of developers. The LApps series is certainly not perfect. However, when you are in the Super Brothers or Lightning Golf ball Battle game, you will discover enough fun to overlook some bugs that require to be fixed. There is also a competent error reporting system, that i found to end up being quite responsive: I also exchanged some text messages with developers to provide feedback. Obviously, enough time I spent testing LApps is effective to both events: I got a small amount of Bitcoin benefits, and the platform has obviously become better. Gaming can be a multi-billion dollar industry that can take advantage of the integration of fast, secure, and personal payments. It is good to possess at least one LApp in a big company, but in the end the achievement of a project like Satoshi's game directly depends on our participation as a neighborhood. We use our period and satoshi to vote, and the dynamics of the change accordingly. Roldan said: "You want to build a more scalable platform that will allow us to meet up the higher needs of video game developers who want to add their work to Satoshi Nakamoto's game. Furthermore, we simply added our project to Product In Hunt, this will require some neighborhood support. Your responses can fundamentally influence our potential future in a very positive way. For those who have time to try these platforms, you should do so. Just like keeping a pet, you can have some longer fun and create the investment pay off ultimately. "

Annotated edition, Week in Ethereum News, April 5 issue
Listening to Fountain of Wayne’s Sky Full of Holes, which is unfortunately their last album because lead songwriter Adam Schlesinger died this week at age 52 from COVID19.  Unappreciated genius.
For me, the big news of the week is that about 10 days ago I decided to leave ConsenSys:
Tumblr media
I’ve been doing this newsletter for almost 4 years now, it seemed like the right time to make the jump.
My expectation is that the newsletter stays free, while this annotated version goes subscriber-only of some sort.   Figuring out the pricing model isn’t super easy - I think the way to maximize revenue is to price quite high, but I don’t particularly want to do that.  If I spend the time on this, I’d like it to be read more widely.   My tentative pricing is $9 a month or $99 a year.
The bigger question is whether the main newsletter can stay free long-term.  I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I mostly enjoy doing it it.  But I strongly believe in listening when the market speaks.
Roughly speaking, the audience is the 15,000 most important people in Ethereum and web3.  That strikes me as quite valuable, and it should be apparent that sponsors and ads will transparently take a more prominent position.  Of course, surveillance capitalism has trained people to think that the only value to advertising is what they can track - which I think quite understates the value of this audience.  There’s no other way to reach all the insiders, devs, investors, journalists, and power users in one place.
More on this in the future, but the bottom line is: if you like Week in Eth News being free, I hope you’ll check out the sponsors. If we do it right, the sponsors should be value add and worth your attention.
Here’s the most clicked this week
Tumblr media
Gitcoin extended the CLR round, my grant is here.  I’d love it if you put 11 somewhere after the decimal so I can track the donation to the annotated newsletter.   1 Dai currently gets matched 73 Dai.

Updated tech tree on Stateless Ethereum – what’s needed for improved sync, witnesses, EVM changes, and binary trees
Gnosis is resuscitating the client formerly known as Parity as OpenEthereum, a welcome contribution to client diversity.
The Stateless Ethereum tech tree is an interesting exercise in decentralized ecosystem vs centralized VC coin.
If you talk to many of the VCs, they don’t believe in Ethereum’s decentralized ecosystem.   They want large dev teams gathered in one central location under centralized leadership - hence all the VC coins with 9 figures to spend, but zero ways to deploy that capital effectively (nor do they even seem to try!) and zero community.
Ethereum isn’t like that.  People show up and pitch in from all corners of the world.  Often they start out making pull requests, and people see the quality of their contribution, then eventually they work their way into being a paid contributor.  It’s decentralized, messy, and there’s often a lot of complaints from those who aren’t good enough to get funded full-time or fall through the cracks for a variety of reasons.
But it’s been working so far.

Burner Wallet on Fuel’s rollup. Check it out on burner.fuel.sh
Dharma is doing a rollup chain with interstate, using the spec published on ethresearch
The emergent order of rollups is an interesting example of what I was talking about above.  They’re all working out what their selling point is.  Some are going after dexes (ie, loopring, idex, deversifi), payments (Dharma, Fuel), some privacy (Zeropool).  That’s an extremely incomplete list, because I was pointing out the stuff from this week plus the stuff that’s live (loopring) or imminent.

RicMoo’s Rooted: deploy a contract and be able to arbitrarily update it. Screens of Austin Griffith playing with it on eth.build
RicMoo continues his exploration of CREATE2 magic.  It’s still something that is underappreciated (possibly good, as users probably also need some education) in our ecosystem among devs.
Samczsun continues his reign of terror when he shows up in your discord/telegram/riot/it doesn’t matter.  As predicted, he’s the clear winner of this round of Gitcoin grants.  Fun fact: I was his first contributor during the CLR round.
Fortmatic’s magic link is pretty cool, and applicable outside of our relatively small web3 circle.

Livepeer’s opportunity in a socially distanced world
Every week I get to this section, and my first instinct is to count “DeFi or not?”  This week it’s 5/11.   That doesn’t include prediction markets - though of course that’s an arbitrary distinction.  Defining the contours of DeFi isn’t easy.
Given the stresses on centralized video infrastructure, Livepeer looks like a prescient bet from Doug and Eric, and something where decentralization can really deliver unique value.
Also very cool to see Brave using Origin Protocol.  We need more of this.
Tokens/Business/Regulation
Fat Brands bonds live on mainnet show how Ethereum will eat Wall Street’s settlement layer
USDC grows 50% in a month
Subcontext of USDC growing is that many folks moved to USDC because DSR went down to zero, plus liquidity crunch etc etc.
However, the interesting part about Maker adding USDC is that USDC ended up being quite symbiotic for Dai.   While USDC seemed like a competitor (and is to some degree!), it turned out that there’s a symbiosis there that emergent order created in a way that a centralized planner would never have come up with.

I wonder how long CMC remains dominant.  Having an exchange as an owner seems like untenable in the long-run.  While their dominance is enshrined by Google, that depends on 1) links which may disappear now that it is owned by an exchange and 2) Goog’s (human thumb on the scales) algorithm.
One has to wonder whether Bitmain can extend their ASIC again with another firmware update?
Bump to OpenVDF, a very interesting open hardware collaboration.

Today, I met a friend named Emily for brunch. Emily is a Stanford girl, a California-raised, New York-hardened boss-ass lady. I met her on an app for friends called Bumble, and I can’t help but wonder how that will sound to you when you’re older. Even five years ago, such things didn’t exist, so it still feels strange to me that I can login on my phone and swipe right and left on potential friendships. Meeting people as an adult can be really challenging, so don’t get me wrong—I’m thankful for the technology. It just feels strange at times.
Back to the matter at hand. The last time Emily and I caught up over drinks was a couple months ago, and she spilled to me over wine that she and her husband have been trying to get pregnant since January. It was, to use her words, taking longer than both of them expected. It was clear that she was feeling dejected about the whole ordeal, but we are not incredibly close and she didn’t offer to open up about it. The conversation moved on, and that was that.
Today, during a lull between sips of coffee and bites of tofu scramble, I broached the topic again. “How has the trying been going?”
She laughed uncomfortably. “Horribly.” I must have looked alarmed, because she added “I mean, it’s not that dire, but let’s not talk about it now.” Again, we moved on.
When I first started working, there was a project manager named Jenny who was the same age as I am now. She got pregnant at twenty-eight, and I remember wondering why she and her husband made the decision to have kids then—they both seemed so young, and it felt like they had all the time in the world to circle back to having children. Jenny was domineering and unabashedly and vocally proud of herself, the kind of person who, when they were kind to you, made you feel incredible. Most of the time though, she just made me feel like shit. She had no problem letting you know if she thought you were stupid, and it felt as though she thought everyone around her was.
One time at lunch she confessed to me and another coworker named Liz that it was really difficult for her to get pregnant. After she left the table, we joked that we weren’t surprised. It made sense that such a hostile person would have a hostile vagina, and her husband, an all around nice and kind guy, didn’t seem like he’d have the type of sperm that could survive her. All of this sounds exceedingly cruel as I write this now, but we didn’t know about the failed attempts to conceive until she was already pregnant. It seemed fine to joke about, since “it wasn’t like she was actually barren.” There are no excuses for what we said, but we were young still. We didn’t consider how sad and confusing those months of trying must have been for them before an egg finally, thankfully, implanted.
Liz became one of my best friends in those early Austin days. She married her high school sweetheart last year, and the idea was that they, at twenty-eight, were going to begin trying themselves this summer. Liz told me this over Thai food when she was in Austin last spring. She works in adoptions now. Every day, she counsels families who tried to have their own children but for various reasons couldn’t. “I know you and John are getting married in 2020,” she said, her voice dropping to a whisper, “but if you want kids, you should start trying before that.” When I saw her a few weeks ago, we were at a tailgate. We were surrounded by people, so there was never a good moment to ask how her attempts were going. She had a margarita in hand, which felt like an answer to the unspoken question.
Twenty-eight. Twenty-nine. Twenty-eight. Three women I know who wanted children, three women who did not immediately get pregnant when they decided they were ready. The logical part side of my brain tells me that this is normal, nothing to be alarmed over. My mom once cautioned me that even though it will someday feel like I am suddenly ready to be a mother, the road to conception is often a difficult one. “Yeah, yeah,” I thought to myself. “I’m sure it’s hard, but it clearly works.” My mom had two children: your uncle and I. The warning seemed silly. Now, as your dad and I stare down the barrel of trying, as I watch women in my life struggle through their own attempts, it feels very scary and very real. I have spent my entire sexual history trying actively not to get pregnant. I have taken more than my fair share of Plan B, many doses of which I’m sure were completely unnecessary, because I was terrified by the idea of being with child. It feels like a cruel cosmic joke that once a woman decides that everything else in her life is finally in order enough to begin down the road of motherhood that nature would drag out the experience, make it hard and stressful.
A few months ago, I was listening to a podcast where they were interviewing a biologist of some kind. I don’t remember the context of the conversation very well, but at one point, the women said something along the lines of “If you have been in a long-term sexual relationship and haven’t accidentally conceived, there’s a high likelihood that you or your partner might have fertility issues.” The statement felt like a slap: I had always been so careful with my birth control, so ready to take a Plan B if your dad and I had sex, and I thought there was even a small chance that I hadn’t taken the little white pill within the designated three hour window. I prided myself on my care, the attention I paid to keeping us out of a pregnancy until we were ready for you. Now, I can’t help but wonder if something is wrong. Should we, in our eight years together, have had a mistake by now?
I started this writing experiment because I thought it would be meaningful for you to have this glimpse into my psyche someday, to know all the things that were floating around in my mind the year before you. I can’t help but wonder how the next few months will unfold, and I do worry that the year before you might stretch into the next. All we can do is see what happens come January.

This leads to a conflict, because it cause the 'You win' popup to NOT show and the user goes back in a game that is already won....This is annoying for a user, because the user has to make another move to complete the already completed level.
