EMOTIONAL about my best friend’s birthday this year. 2023 was the worst year of my life, and 2024 began with a rough month in and out of the hospital—and through it all she never once left my side or made me feel like I couldn’t tell her everything. Never once.

That wasn’t the case with everyone I tried to talk to, including a family member I used to be thick as thieves with, but who dropped me after I told her I had started treatment. That hurt terribly and maybe always will. But oh, how I appreciate the people who stayed, especially her, with her unflinching, unwavering support through the thorny, ugly darkness of the past thirteen months. Her belief in me and her belief I could get better. She is truly a wonder.
