What Does the Song Mean?
Song Name: Slide
Artist: Chase Atlantic
Genre: Alternative/Indie, Pop
The third single from CHASE ATLANTIC's third studio album, BEAUTY IN DEATH, is titled "SLIDE." It came out in 2021. This song is one of my personal favorites from Chase Atlantic and I had it on repeat when it first came out. Normally I'm very good at interpreting the meaning of songs but this song was kind of hard because it used a lot of metaphorical phrases. However, I think I have read between the lines long enough till the point where I think I have a pretty spot on interpretation of the song.
I think the song in general can mean that having reckless fun can be the best type of fun but that it can result in awful consequences. In the beginning of the song the lead singer, Mitchel, says that he has red eyes. He also says that he can barely stand and that he has to stop himself from panicking every time he goes down stairs. This all seems like effects of drugs. Knowing what I know about Chase Atlantic, they see using drugs as a way to have fun. The drug use is the reckless fun that they are trying to have. The effects of it are some of the negative consequences.
Mitchel also sings about seeing pain in someone's eyes. I'm not sure if it is a love interest or a friend that he's talking about but I think it could really be both. He also says that he was experiencing depression and was self medicating which is also what the excessive drug use might be for. I think he's trying to say that since he experiences depression and uses drugs to help with it and he seems to think it "works for him" even though to outside viewers it does not and he should really just get some real help. It seems he has a friend or a love interest, the one who he sees the pain in their eyes, who is also experiencing depression. So he is trying to get them to start using drugs to "help" with it as well. Mitchel also sings, I know that you've never been this high Promise, baby, I'll take you to heaven if you want it I'll take you to heaven if you die" From this I got that this person he is trying to get to use with him isn't really a drug user so he's saying that he'll watch over them. The line about taking them to heaven if they die is quite deep however. It's almost like he knows the risk that the friend is taking getting that high and still dismissing because getting high out rules all of that. Promising to take someone to heaven is a big thing to promise though seeing how he is human and the only person capable of doing something like that is god. Seems like a ego problem going on here.
Overall, I think the song is about being in a lifestyle where you're really depressed and using drugs to self medicate and trying to drag those close to you into that lifestyle with you. Drugs is the only thing they know and will know.
This is just my interpretation of the song. If you think different or want to expand on my opinion feel free to leave a comment!
