30 Day Worldbuilding Challenge #9: Cosmology

What is the Cosmology of your world?

This is one that I’m quite excited to talk about! This will be a long post, so I’ll put a break in to make it less overwhelming on your dash.

First off, I will say that I really don’t like the Forgotten Realms’ alignment-centric model. This is important, because when I first started DMing games in Groppa I actually used this cosmology. Here it is, for reference:

I don’t like this model because 1. there are too many planes and 2. it doesn’t tell me anything interesting about the world and its conflicts. That’s fine because FR is meant to be a generic world for everyone to play with, but it does not suit me. Plus, most of these planes are kind of redundant. Do I really need Hades (the plane of infinite gloom) AND the Shadowfell (the plane of infinite gloom)? A lot of the Lower Planes could just be layers of the Abyss IMO. If you’re going for an alignment thing, do we really need planes for the in-betweens of alignment? Do we need a Lawful Evil, Lawful Evilish, and Lawfulish Evil plane? I say no, we don’t. All this complication is facilitating a very boring Good vs Evil struggle that I don’t care for.

So, without further ado, here is my cosmology (I’m not going to say it’s better, just that it suits me more). It is split into two parts, each of which being a different “view” of the same cosmos. We’ll start with the mortal-centric view, the one that puts the Waking World in the centre:

Part 1: The Wheel of Dreamers

This part is not terribly different to the Forgotten Realms version, aside from the fact that Limbo is now an elemental plane. To sum it up briefly, the point of this cosmology is that the dreams, thoughts, and emotions of mortals (dreamers) is what creates the rest of the wheel. Emotions and dreams create the Feywild and Shadowfell, both planes that mirror the Waking World in the middle but with a higher emphasis on abstractions like mood, tone, and myth. If you have a home in the Waking World, it is sure to be a building packed with memories and associations for you - some good, some bad. But in the Feywild, all your most explosive and hard-hitting memories will be represented literally; for example, that time you had a great birthday party at home will be represented by a family of sprites who spend all their time feasting on a windowsill. Equally, that time you had a flaming row with your spouse will be represented by a burning tree that never goes out. Meanwhile, in the Shadowfell all your cooler associations come to life. All the hours you spent quietly reading or drawing will be represented by ghostly spirits who act out those quiet activities, and every moment of boredom or misery you felt there will echo through the warped hallways as an audible song. 

To sum up, the Feywild takes all the big emotions and makes them literal, and the Shadowfell takes all the long emotions and makes them literal. The thing they have in common is that they’re for processing complex, abstract feelings. This is totally unlike the Elemental Planes. After the soul-stuff that the dreams that made the Shadowfell and Feywild have been processed, they move through Limbo were they are further broken down into something formless and impersonal. Then they are sorted into raw components: Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. These are the building blocks of the multiverse, and exactly what the gods need to continue with their grand project.

That is the purpose of the Wheel. The gods themselves get soul-stuff energy directly from their followers, but that alone is not enough. The Wheel spins and generates more energy for them to use in concert with each other. A god can just about live off the prayers and devotion of their followers, but to keep the multiverse intact they need far more. This brings us to the god-centric view of the multiverse: The Axle upon which the Wheel spins.

Part 2: The Axle of the Gods

The Astral Sea is the home of most gods. Every star you see is its own little world, with gods and other celestial beings living there in eternal luxury. There are plenty of mortals there too, many of whom are essentially either planar travellers (read: pirates) or the exalted followers of the gods. I left the Astral Sea vague because it allows me to come up with any wacky idea for a plane I like and just have it be one of the many realms of the Astral Sea. 

Above the Wheel of Dreamers is Mechanus, (pronounced meck-ah-nuss, not meck-ay-nuss) the home of Primus the god of balance. They used to be a fairly minor god until the Abyss showed up, at which point they were forced to reorganise existence into fighting against it. They placed Mechanus in its current position to oversee reality. Then, they moulded Hell out of the broken planes that had been ravaged by the demons thus far. Placing the disgraced angel Asmodeus in charge of building an infernal army to fight the Abyss, finally Primus contracted Hades and Dread Persephone to position the plane of Hades as the battleground for the war between devils and demons. Thus reality was safeguarded against demonic incursion. The Blood War, as it came to be known, would rage forever. No matter how hard Asmodeus tried to win, Hades and Persephone would subtly alter the course of the war to keep him on the back foot. It’s a dangerous game they’re playing. Go too far in sabotaging Asmodeus and the demons will overrun reality. Let Asmodeus’ tactical brilliance be rewarded and he might conquer the Abyss, thus gaining its infinite power (power enough to overthrow the gods). 

Conclusion

So yeah, it’s not terribly different to the Forgotten Realms’ cosmology. The reason I changed it was two-fold: one, I wanted to make it not all about alignment. Two, I wanted to put the Blood War in as the central conflict of the multiverse. I like the idea of Asmodeus being an ambiguous figure who is both genuinely trying to make up for his past mistakes but is also rightfully angry at his mistreatment by the callous gods. I wanted the struggle between the Abyss and the rest of reality to not be about Good vs Evil but more about this specific “family” of gods trying to defend themselves. I took a lot of inspiration from Greek myth, as you might guess by Hades’ importance to the cosmology. I’m really into the idea of running more “planar” games where you get to go really wild with the environments you can use; central to that goal was creating a cosmology that I could vibe with.

Egyptian Goetia - Are You the Gatekeeper?

My development of a evocation system for communicating with Egyptian spirits is moving along nicely. I thought I would give some updates on how things are progressing. TOOLS

Black Obsidian Mirror – The mirror acts as a means of communication. This has been consecrated by invoking Thoth and asking for his blessing, then leaving it out under the light of a full moon. I consecrated an obsidian ring I have at the same time, to act as a sort-of portable communication device in case spirits try to contact me outside of ritual.

Lapis Lazuli Pyramid – The pyramid acts as a vessel for the spirit to inhabit while visiting, a rough equivalent to the triangle or brass jar in other goetic systems. It provides a hospitable environment for the spirit to occupy while on this plane of existence. Sorry, Admiral, it’s not a trap. It is not meant to bind spirits. I chose the pyramid for its obvious connections to Egyptian spirituality, which were literally built to house spirits. I consecrated the Pyramid by invoking Thoth and calling upon the Ogdoad, more on them later.

Circle – I have somewhat of a practical streak, and I knew I wanted my circle to have certain physical characteristics. It had to be something that would fit in my temple space, something I could pick up and put away, and something I wouldn’t trip on. I’ve seen a lot of circles printed on sheets and tarps, and I’m sorry, but they look like a recipe for disaster. Step into one of those and they are bound to bunch up, slide around, and become a tripping hazard. Not a good idea when working in a space with a bunch of candles and pointy things. So, I found this rubberized mat:

A full moon being the perfect symbol for Thoth. It’s on its way right now. When I receive it, I plan on inscribing it with a snake, like many classic goetic circles, the snake being a symbol associated with magick in Ancient Egypt, and a whole bunch of other cultures as well.

The snake will contain prayer’s to Thoth in hieroglyphs, of which I have found plenty of examples of at Academia.edu.

SPIRITS

Many grimoires direct the magus to evoke certain spirits as facilitators before evoking the demons themselves. The Grimorium Verum has the magus evoke the elements first, to open the pathways between the material and non-material world. Of course, early Egyptians did not subscribe to the later classical Greek versions of the elements. But they did have something similar. If one sees elements as the stuff in which all existence is made, the Egyptians had a group of beings that provide the primordial building blocks of the universe – the aforementioned Ogdoad.

Ancient Egyptians had dozens of creation myths from city to city and through the 3,000 years of Egyptian culture. In the city of Khumun, which the Greeks renamed Hermopolis, Thoth was the principle deity, and the world was created by his children. Thoth created eight gods, The Ogdoad, who represented the primal forces of the universe. Though some of these gods are familiar to us now in different roles and with different associations, the myth of the Ogdoad is ancient and in some ways represent the primordial versions of these beings.

The key word being primordial—from the beginning—which for the Egyptians was the primordial chaos from which is brought the order of creation.

The Ogdoad were grouped in pairs, male and female. Each pair represented one of the primordial forces with each god having a different perspective on that force.

The Ogdoad are:

Nu – The Primordial Ocean/Nut (Nuit) – The Ocean of Stars: These gods represent space, as in area. All things in creation need a place to be. They are vast and contain room for all that is the universe.

Hehu – God of a Million Years/Hehut – The Timeless Desert: They represent all time. Time that changes, but also that which remains unchanged. Time is required for any action to occur, but what is important stands the test of time.

Kek – The Corrupting Darkness/Kekuit – The Comforting Darkness: Everything comes from the void. As humans, this element can both hurt and heal. The darkness corrupts, but is also in darkness we find rest.

Amun – The Unknowable Mystery/Amunet – The Mystery Revealed: Everything in the universe is either known or unknown. Some things we will never comprehend, yet they still influence our lives. Some things are revealed through gnosis, when our self is shown to us.

The Ogdoad will act as my “path openers,” to break down the walls between dimensions.

The Verum also instructs evoking a spirit named Scirlin. I think Jake Stratton-Kent got it right when describing the purpose of Scirlin in his commentary on the Trve Grimoire.

“This is the great intermediary of the system, who in common with Legba in Voodoo, Exu or Ellegua in Santeria and Umbanda, Ganesha in Hinduism, and Janus, Hecate, Anubis and various other gods of antiquity, is to be invoked first, so that the others may be contacted through his good offices.”

After much research, I found a being in Egyptian lore that, while not exactly the same type of spirit, has the characteristics to get the job done. She happens to be the most famous (infamous?) demon in all of Egyptian mythology. You may recognize her from one of the more well-known sections of the Book of Going Forth by Day (Book of the Dead). A part lion, part hippo, part crocodile demoness named Ammit.

Ammit guards the final passage to the underworld, and at times devours the souls of the unworthy dead. In this aspect, Ammit is not only an intermediary between the spirit world and the material world, but also the fulcrum between existence/non-existence itself. Ammit has the power to consign a spirit to complete oblivion.

That’s pretty much what I have so far. I have also acquired a partner in crime who wants to help me work on the system. I have always wanted to use a spirit board, as they can provide much clearer communication, but wrote it off, as such things work much better with more than one person operating them. Now that I have someone working with me, the spirit board is back in the game.

Week 17 – Alex – I Told You I’d See You Later

My previous post was a little anti-climactic if you ask me, and I didn’t get to recap what I did so here we gooo.

----------------------FIRST, MAJOR DISCLAIMER---------------

     As you can see, this post is pretty dang long, so I’m just gonna put evaluation stuff for the class here first, and if you feel like reading on afterward that’s cool, but it’s just personal reflections and final send-off stuff. 

     So, shockingly, I was one of the main contributors to the rough animation which you can see in the animatic, and can track the progress of throughout this blog’s history. I finished 15 roughed shots in total. I also have 8 shots concurrently blocked (in other words, partial progress,) and 2 shots unstarted.       I also made the 3D environment models used for reference in making the backgrounds, as well as handling the editing side (video composition, timing, and sound edits) for the animatic up to this point. 

     Next, I worked closely with Sophia and our sound mixer Tim to get the voice actresses recorded, their clips edited, and finally integrated into the film. And also, while this hasn’t made it into the animatic yet, I have been creating some original sound design elements as well. Here’s a sample of some:

I’m focusing mostly on the characters’ Pua powers and transformations right now, and some sludge sounds. And in hand with that, I also did the voice clips/sound effects for the Sludge Monster. Aaand that’s pretty much it from me this semester! Super excited to keep up the work in the weeks to come! ------------------ The Feels Side of the Post -----------------

                                       The Pua Warriors Experience

     When I first heard about Pua Warriors, I thought the idea sounded awesome: Magical girls set in Hawai'i using flower powers and sparkles to save the day? Yeah I’m down for that. It felt… familiar to me, I suppose. But at the time I still knew relatively little about the characters, the story, and only had a vague idea of their designs.

     As time went on and the Capstone application deadline was approaching, I felt like I was a bit stuck, with the exhaustion of working on Midnight Showing holding me on one side, and having only a vague outline of a plot for my own film idea on the other. And with no crew to speak of, the decision not to make a Capstone of my own was … difficult… one of the most difficult in my time at ACM. Cause in my mind (at the time at least,) not making “your own” Capstone project felt like a failure somehow. But this whole Pua Warriors thing was sounding pretty nice, and I already knew everyone working on it. So I decided life’s better together, and far be it from me to not work on a project of some kind. So I hopped on-board for a little trip into the unknown. And well, here we are, still in the unknown. But that doesn’t mean we’re lost. Not yet.

     I have to say, Pua Warriors has grown on me. At a certain point it stopped feeling like a student film, and started feeling more like a potential series: a world with its own storyline, and indeed one that’s worth telling – yes, I would make a distinction between the two. Working on the project has just been the sweetest, most wonderful, enlightening, mild existential crisis inducing, and bizarrely friendly thing I’ve had the privilege of working on, all at once. It didn’t just change how I approach character design, animation, or working on a team – I feel it changed me for the better as a person, and at times I feel almost unworthy to be on this project.

     One thing I’ll never forget is the time we spent hanging out in the Keller lab, going to group meetings, and recording at MELE. What silly fun times those were. I admit, not being able to hang out with my friends after the virus shut the world down has truly been one of the most difficult parts of my whole “college era” of my life experience. To feel like something great was forming, only to be ripped away by something so crazy and completely over-the-top as this virus – words just can’t capture the feeling of melancholy. But even when we’re spread hundreds or thousands of miles apart, at times I can still feel near, even if it is only through a screen. And personally, I don’t want that to change just because the semester’s ending. That’s why, in a way, I’m sort of glad we have time to work on into the summer.

                                             Reflections on Life

     Some lessons this semester taught me: First is on fitting in. It’s never blending in for the sake of blending in, nor standing out for the sake of standing out. It’s being comfortably unique in your own talents and skills, strengths and weaknesses, styles and tastes - while being happy to share those things with others. Indeed, it’s not about being “good enough” to belong, but rather belonging, in order that may do good for others. Second is on wanting to help. For a long time I remained kind of a loner in ACM, sitting in “my” corner with “my” ideas. It wasn’t until last semester and especially during this semester I realized just how powerful, or perhaps rather how much more powerful the drive to help and serve others can be. That’s true not just for creative endeavors, but all areas of life. The Third lesson: doing things for the right reasons. We do things for a lot of different reasons, and often times we aren’t cognizant of why we act or feel the way we do. Having an understanding of who you truly are and what you really want is critical in exercising self-control, and you may come to realize your desires aren’t always what you think they are. And the Fourth lesson is on being assertive. We all want and feel things, and one of the greatest feelings is being in control. You may doubt yourself when you don’t know where your feelings and desires come from. You may think your mind is playing tricks on you. But the truth is, we’ll never go places in life if we don’t speak up and acknowledge our ideas. We may not always come to the right conclusions, but that doesn’t mean we’re wrong for trying. So try, try, and try again. It’s okay to fail, as long as you pick up something with you as you get up. Take risks, and understand that doubt is often our greatest enemy, so fight it!

     So now, at the end, I don’t really know what I feel: I don’t know if this is sadness or happiness? Courage or fear? Maybe it’s none of those things, but something I haven’t quite felt before. Until recently, I didn’t realize there’s an emotion that can make you feel so weak, yet feel strong at the same time. One thing’s for sure, I’m going to miss the project, the crew, and all of Hawai'i. To us, the future is a blank slate: nothing is written on it, yet it holds an infinite number of possibilities. 

                                          Honoring my Maker

     Now before I wrap up, I have a specific topic I’d like to address.

     While I  usually avoid discussing my religious life openly in a scholastic context, I will say here and now that God has been my greatest help throughout these past couple years. For the longest time, even before coming to Hawai'i, I struggled with feelings of not fitting in, of low self-esteem, and of self-doubt. There were a lot of recurring battles at my home growing up, and many of the wounds followed me into adulthood. And if nothing else, this semester has brought many of those to the forefront.

     As a child back in Washington, I would often just go with the flow of my friends at the time, because it was easier, and allowed me to avoid conflict. Yet I would be lead into instances where I would not speak up or act, even though I felt what we were doing, thinking, or saying was wrong. My family wasn’t particularly religious, or at least they certainly didn’t act like it. And for a while I think I didn’t believe in God. Maybe there was some higher power... maybe, perhaps, but not God. Yet still I felt a crushing weight on my conscience, for both the things I had done, and the things I had failed to do. So I watched TV shows and movies to help me feel safe, to distract myself, and indeed to feel as if I had more power than I actually did. 

     There came a time in middle school when a big storm came through my life, and when I was living in fear, I turned to God, and He helped me through it. And again in high school, God helped me. And in college, many times more. Through it all, God answered my prayers, and showed me there is a better way. And I came to understand that He gave me a way to life through His Son, long before I was even born. And because of that, I could find comfort and rest by trusting in Him through the afflictions I faced.      So the way I see it, God has lead my life in a way neither I, nor any human being could. I have found that He has a purpose for all things, and truly that nothing comes by accident. I may not say it aloud, but I observe it every day in the places He sets me in, and the people with whom He places me. Yes, even in the midst of this virus. So while family and friends may not always be there to support me, and while institutions may crumble and fall, and while I may move away and feel isolated from all I’ve known, my God was, is, and always will be with me. There is nothing more empowering or reassuring than that. And without coming off too preachy, my hope is that people might perhaps look at that reflected in my life - to see the work God has done, and to consider their own relationship with Him.

                                                       Roll Call

     Next, I have a few shout-outs I’d like to mention.

     First, to my wonderful film Director Sophia: What can I say? This project has been simply amazing to work on with you. I think back to the moment I first overheard you talking about Pua Warriors. You were so thrilled to do it, and that’s when I realized I might want to jump onboard as well. Since then, the only adjective that comes to mind describing this experience is “vibrant.” I know there have been a lot of ups and downs, but that’s part of what makes the experience worth remembering. And there may very well be more hills and valleys to go through, but I actually look forward to them every day with you, as we continue to make this film happen. You shine like a star with a brilliant, positive energy I’ve never seen before. And I think you have a much greater potential than perhaps even you yourself realize. Of course, everyone has room to grow, but that doesn’t reflect poorly on you at all. It’s the fact that you’ve been so supportive of your team, and that you didn’t give up on your vision, and indeed, you’ve made massive efforts to grow this semester – that’s what makes you a good director in my eyes. And to be honest, I wouldn’t have anybody else direct the film – certainly at least not this “episode” anyway. It’s been a lasting experience, and I hope you’ll take what you’ve learned from it with you. You have a bright future ahead of you Sophia – all you need to do is reach out to it!

     Next, to the Art Director and my good friend Gavin, wow what a ride this has been. Your artistic vision, your stamina, and your work ethic are so very remarkable. It’s been awesome these last few years getting to know you and work with you through all the late nights and long class periods. And especially through Midnight Showing and Pua Warriors. You basically set the standard that I and most other animation students aspire to, and you have such a unique way of looking at things too. Even when you’re feeling drained from all the work, your passion clearly shows, and you know how to communicate both very clearly, AND very, uh, sassily, which makes hanging around you hilarious. You’re also one of the only people on Earth that could get me to watch Clone Wars, and I don’t regret it. You give exceptional feedback in each critique, and though it can be tough to incorporate sometimes, you make listening to you a worthwhile endeavor. ACM simply would not be what it is without you, and I know you have many great things you’ll do with your skills moving forward.

     To our excellent Animation Supervisor Chandelle, this semester’s been a tough one, but even in the darkest times, the sun still rises! You’ve always been an awesome animator, an incredibly hard worker, and an exceptionally friendly and helpful member of the group. And what’s more, you never sought to put the spotlight on yourself for it. You do things simply because you care, and you do them with such a level of discipline and professionalism that few in the ACM department could match it. I’m sure I speak for the whole group when I say, we care about you so much, and we’re just thankful you’ve been with us on the project. Never sell yourself short Chandelle! You’ve conquered some major obstacles in the past, and I know you have it in you to overcome this one as well.The light will shine again someday, so hang in there, and thanks for all the help you’ve given!

     To my fellow animation friend Jared, man, have I got a lot of respect for you. You really know what it’s like to get down and dirty for the team, or feel stuck in a rut in the middle of a project. This last year has probably tested you the most, and yet you never fell apart. Sure, cracks may have formed at times, but you held together and pulled on through to the end. That proves you’ve got guts, and a great capacity for patience and accommodation especially in times of crisis. And that’s exactly what we need - that kind of boldness and passion, to be able to outlast our worries, especially when there are so many unknowns. I remember back to Midnight Showing; boy, that felt like a big time of unknowns too. We had no idea what was coming. And yet you outmatched it, and sure enough, things worked out in the end. And because you’ve been so humble and willing to improve yourself, I’ve seen you get so much better over these last few years, and frankly, it’s astonishing! You’re a great friend, and a hard worker Jared. Keep it up! You’ve got this!

     I’d also like mention my fellow animation friend Kalilinoe! Even though we’re not in the same team this semester, you’re still an awesome and inspiring animator to have in class! Working together on Midnight Showing last semester was a lot of work, but also so much fun! And I love your style of animation using rotoscoping. And I gotta say, the animation in Pua Ka Uahi looks sooo smooth and beautiful. Watching your progress on the film this semester has been super inspiring, and definitely keeps the other teams on their toes! I can’t wait to see the finished film!

     I’ll also make a brief mention of Jayme and Bobby from our 320/420 classes! You guys rock, and made the year all the better! I hope we’ll get to hang out again sometime! 

     PLUS, A big thanks to the whole Capstone class! Stay creative, and best wishes to you all!

     And finally, one last big shout-out to Lisette for making all of this possible! You’ve been an awesome teacher not just for this course, but for the last few years in general! You always bring such wisdom and expert film knowledge to us younglings. And you’re so willing to make yourself available to your students; always helpful and encouraging to everyone, and even more so now during this time. That’s just the kind of support we need! I’ll be missing your classes greatly! Thanks so much for all your care and help!

                                              A New Chapter Begins

Well, that pretty much wraps up my blog (for the school-production time anyway) of Pua Warriors. I’d like to once again thank each and every one of you for making the ACM experience so incredible. I think I like posting, so I’ll probably try to keep up with the blogs for the future, or at least make an update every once in a while. Thanks for reading through this epic conclusion of a post.

At a certain point in my life, I had a FLASH-REVELATION-MEMORY, where I remembered that he and I had made an agreement to work together. We made this agreement before I was born. Basically, the agreement was: I would incarnate on earth. I would get up to speed on music. Then Vista would telepathically transmit musical visions into my mind. Then it was my job to RECEIVE these visions, and MANIFEST them (as actual air sound waves), and get them out publicly far and wide.

The whole PURPOSE of this collaboration, was to create and make publicly available, music that had a consciousness-raising, vibration-increasing, emotion-uplifting effect—for the purpose of helping people raise their vibrations, so they can stay with our planet, as it is also currently raising its vibrations. When I first started hearing this music in my mind, I originally thought of it as Paradise music. Now, I think of it as Inter-Dimensional music.

Tell us something about your workflow.

1. I receive (telepathically hear) a music vision from Vista.

2. I figure out the chords, melodies, etc.

3. Vista also gives me technical ideas on HOW to create the special-effects needed for that piece.

4. Vista also gives me a read-out on HOW this particular music will effect people in general (such as stimulate their 3rd eye, or open their heart chakra, etc.) His read-out on the effects on people ends up ALWAYS being 100 % accurate.

5. While I’m actually working on the piece, Vista is frequently whispering ideas into my mind, to help me manifest this music more effectively.

6. I create the music.

7. I get it out there—which, nowadays is easy, thanks to the internet.

How would creative rituals benefit your workflow?

No idea. I use no rituals in my work flow.  

I simply FOCUS on music, and WORK on it.

How do you get in the zone?

I simply FOCUS on music, and WORK on it. CONCENTRATION is very VERY helpful in this regard, and Vista has taught me MUCH about concentration.

How do you start a track?

In the beginning.

Have you ever encountered a creative block?

Yes, but only ONCE in my life.

How did you deal with it?

When I graduated from Cornell University,

and decided to skip my post-graduate scholarship in Anthropology,

and instead, focus my career on music,

I moved to California to begin my music career.

After the first two months, I had a most frightening creative block

where all my creativity came to a halting stop. Terrifying!

So I PRAYED FOR CREATIVITY.

With all my Soul, I PRAYED FOR CREATIVITY.

And boy or boy, did that prayer get answered!!!!!

I had SO MUCH CREATIVITY, that I had to develop and evolve

“traffic control” for “ideas over-flow”—where many great new ideas

were all hitting me at once, and I tried to not lose some GREAT ideas,

because of new GREAT ideas coming to me.

But I did manage to develop an internal TRAFFIC CONTROL

for IDEAS OVER-FLOW.

Since then, I have never experienced a creative block.

In fact, now, my creativity is “on tap”, like a water faucet in a sink:

I turn it on,

      when I want to receive creative ideas,

and I turn it off,

      when I want to FOCUS on IMPLEMENTING ideas that I have already received.

MOST convenient arrangement!

(It’s distracting to receive new ideas, when you are FOCUSED on manifesting already-received ideas.)

Have you ever tried singing or using a voice in general? Is there a message that’s better conveyed through words?

WORDS/LYRICS are a left-brain logical mental communication.

The TONE OF THE VOICE and singing (varying the pitch) is a right-brain intuitive emotional communication.

The sound of a voice has embedded within it,

the person’s EMOTIONAL STATE and SPIRITUAL STATE—at the moment

the voice sounds are being made.

So the sound of the voice is a profoundly useful and flexible sound source.

Also, the voice is THE MOST FLEXIBLE MONOPHONIC MUSICAL INSTRUMENT!

It can do portamento (sliding between notes).

It has an enormous dynamic range (softest to loudest).

It can do very flexible rate-changing & depth-changing Vibrato.

And (most unique of all) it can morph through timbre changes (tone changes).

         (Which is what happens when they sing words or change vowel sounds).

I personally do not have good voice control, so it’s rare for me to use my own voice.

But I have used my voice on two pieces:

I’ve used my voice throughout the entire piece ➜ “Lueena Coast - II”

from my ➜ “Inter-Dimensional Music” album.

On this piece I experimented with blending flute and voice together.

And, more recently, I used my voice (doing multi-tracked harmonies)

on one particular part (3:15-3:52) of ➜ “The Gates of Opal”

from my ➜ “Realms of Light” album.

I’ve also used two female singers - Sophia and Joie Favier -

on the second half (6:06 to end) of ➜ “The Diamond-Heart Center of  Creation” from my “Realms of Light” album.

Do you work exclusively solo (except for your collaboration with Vista)?

I typically/normally (about 99 % of the time) work alone.

However, there are two exceptions:

On my “Inter-Dimensional Music” album, I had Carl Schwindeman play electric guitar on ➜ “Maha-Splendor” and ➜ “Siren Shallows”. (This was all pre-1975)

Dear Carl is a MAGNIFICENT electric guitarist.

Vista typically guides me to steer clear of other musicians, since their influence usually tends to make the music more conventional and earth-like.

And so, WHY should I use other musicians when I can do it all myself?

(Analogy: Why should a great painter use another painter to help him paint his painting, when he can paint the whole painting himself?)

When multi-track recording became feasible, then working with other musicians became a preference, an option, but no longer a “necessity”.

So, the other exception happened more recently, when I was working on ➜ “The Diamond-Heart Center of Creation” from my “Realms of Light” album.

The basic idea, for the second half of this piece, is the idea of

EXTREME HARMONY amidst EXTREME DIVERSITY.

Well, I can create a lot of diversity all by myself, but Vista suggested that I actually use three other musicians for the second half of this piece, to further extend the “diversity”.

This was so unlikely Vista, that I responded:

          “Am I hearing you right ????!!!????”

Yup, I was hearing him right.

So, following Vista’s suggestion (never a command), this piece also became graced by the exquisite musicianship of:

· Steven Kindler (violin)

· Sophia (female voice)

· Joie Favier (female voice)

You can hear how nicely all four of us blended together in the second half of this piece, beginning at 5:58.

How would you ideally like people to listen to your music? Like describe the ideal scenario (in the disco, at home, with headphones in nature, …)

Listen in a quiet non-disturbing environment.

Listen with good headphones and eyes-closed.

NEVER listen with speakers (because this blurs the 3D hologram that could otherwise be created in your mind, from using headphones).

Yes, it can sound “nice” with speakers, but you’re really missing the “3-D-hologram-in-your-mind” show that way, and just getting stereo.

Which DAW or software environment do you work in?

Steinberg Nuendo (the more professional version of Cubase).

Can you recommend any audio soft- and/or hardware?

I could spend DAYS talking on this one. Let me just say that the most under-appreciated and under-used piece of hardware-or-software is the vocoder, since it allows ANY sound to morph its timbre (tone) as easily, effortlessly, intuitively, immediately, as you can change the vowel sounds with your voice.

You were talking about a music school in your videos, can you elaborate on that? I’ve read in an interview that one branch is situated above Luxor. I understand this is not really a place where one does literally ‘go’?

It’s not on the physical dimension. It’s on the etheric dimension (just slightly higher than physical), and it’s about two miles above the surface of the physical dimension. So, if you want to get there, easiest way is to INTENT it just before falling asleep. But those that are adept at out-of-body travel or remove-viewing can possibly also get there.

It sounds very special and exclusive. Could you describe the ambience there, the kind of knowledge that is taught, maybe you know of other scholars that attend?

This “art school” above Luxor is directed by Serapis Bey, who is now an Ascended Master, but he used to be a human being on the physical dimension as the High Priest of The Ascension Flame Temple in Luxor, Egypt. BELIEVE ME, Serapis Bey is the only scholar you need when you go there. And this temple is for ALL the arts—not just music. Even architecture and sculpting. In terms of “exclusive”, YES, there are CRITERIA to get here (and to stay here). 

CRITERIA to GET here:       Must be at least somewhat adept in whatever is your chosen art form.       Must be at least a bit psychically receptive, to receive ideas regarding this art form.       Must INTEND TO USE YOUR ART TO RAISE CONSCIOUSNESS and to BENEFIT/UPLIFT OTHERS !!!!! CRITERIA to STAY here:       They have LOADS of things to study when you get there. But if you just meander about, and don’t really                  exert yourself, and make a SOLID EFFORT to learn something, you will be asked to leave.       If you don’t have FOLLOW-THROUGH, you will be asked to leave: This means that if they manage to get some                   art “idea” into your physical mind here on earth, you won’t “drop the ball”, but instead you will stay FOCUSED on it until that “art idea” becomes manifest on the physical dimension.

What was the hardest thing to overcome in the beginning of your music career?

Your beliefs determine what you attract into your life.

So, in the beginning, I had the BELIEF that, initially it would be hard and an up-hill battle.

So, sure enough, I created for myself IMMENSE amounts of poverty and struggles of all kinds.

Eventually, I grew out of this (when my beliefs suggested that I had had enough of this).

What are your thoughts of people being able to listen to music telepathically in the future?

As our planet is now raising in its frequencies, and as our local star cluster (including our solar system) is entering an area of our galaxy that has WAY MORE high-frequency energy particles, these effects are ENLIVENING all life on earth—including minerals, plants, animals, and humans.

So animals are becoming WAY more conscious (and some pet-owners will attest that their pets are down-right telepathic).

And humans are raising into all kinds of enhanced psychic abilities, including:

· telepathic hearing

· telepathic seeing

· telekinesis (moving things at a distance)

· remote-viewing

· bi-location

· out-of-body conscious experiences

and more.

Every day, these abilities are becoming more and more prevalent to more and more people of earth.

And this is increasingly evident in the amount of channeled videos now populating YouTube.

So, yes, of course, more and more people are getting sensitive every day to “hearing music telepathically”.

Are there other ways for people to raise their vibration other than listening to music?

Who ever said music was “the only way”? Not me!

There are INFINITE WAYS to raise your vibration!

And music is merely a humble ONE of those INFINITE possible ways.

Can you share anything that Vista has taught you about concentration? Focusing seems very hard these days with smartphones and the Internet.

Do you have a special template?

No. Each piece is WAY TOO UNIQUE, for any template to be of any use.

What effects do you put on the master channel?

None, other than adjusting the over-all volume level throughout the piece.

I definitely do NOT use any compression or multi-band compression, or EQ on the Master channel.

How do you arrange and finish a track?

I let my Heart and Intuition guide me—from the beginning, to the middle, to the end. To be more precise, when I am recording any particular part, I might have to record it many times before I get it “just right”.

So HOW do I know when I get it “just right”?

I listen to my HEART while listening to this recent recording, and NOTICE how my Heart feels about it.

If my Heart has an uneasy feeling about it, I try once again to record it.

If my Heart has a comfortable relaxing “Ahhhh” feeling, then I know I got it, and I then proceed to the next part that needs to be recorded.

How do you deal with unfinished projects?

I have never experienced an “unfinished project”, so I have no idea.

How do you store and organize your projects?

In my computer, using a logical lay-out of folders and sub-folders. (Don’t all musicians do it this way?)

How do you take care of studio ergonomics?

Ah, ergonomics is an EXTREMELY important issue!!!

I FOCUS very strongly on MAXIMIZING the man/machine interface.

For example, many keyboardists optimize space (many keyboards on the same one keyboard rack) rather than optimizing ergonomics (having many foot pedals for just-ONE keyboard).

I’m not interested in optimizing space.

I’m interested in optimizing the man/machine interface:

For example, I might simultaneously have five channels of information between me and the keyboard:

      1. Left hand =>  mod wheel and other controllers

      2. Right hand =>  music notes on the keyboard

      3. Left foot =>  mod pedal -or- portamento on/off switch

      4. Right foot =>  volume pedal

      5. Mouth =>  breath controller (typically assigned to Vibrato-depth)

Tell us something about your daily routine, how is your day structured, how do you make room for creativity?

In the ancient Mystery Schools, they always did their important teachings at night. Why? Because the influence of the sun is to keep you grounded and earth-bound. Whereas, the night allows for consciousness to get much more spacey, out-there, and inter-dimensional.

So, in the morning,

I wash up.

I meditate.

I deal with emails.

I go out and do mundane business (like going to a food store or bank or post office).

Then, at night, I FOCUS on my music and WORK on it.

Share a quick producing tip.

For ANY type of complex project, it is extremely useful to use your mind

as a zoom-lens, where you can ZOOM-OUT to get the over-view,

and then ZOOM-IN to see the details on just one part of the project.

Creation Technique of “Cycling between Zooming Out and Zooming In”

With sufficient effort, self-control of your thoughts allows you to use your mind like a controllable zoom lens for your thoughts:

Zooming Out - (fish-eye lens)

   for the over-view,

        for seeing the inter-relations between all the parts,

             for grasping intuitively all the steps necessary &

                  the optimum order of their execution.

Zooming In - (telephoto lens)

   for seeing just one small part in tremendous living detail,

        for understanding in great detail what needs to be done for this part.

             For concentrating all your thoughts

                  to powerfully manifest & materialize just this one little part.

Manifesting any complex reality can occur most effectively, effortlessly, and quickly through this

  Technique of Cycling between Zooming Out and Zooming In:

To manifest or materialize any reality,

   First you Zoom-Out to get the over-view.

        To understand how all the parts fit together - their inter-relations.

             To understand what needs to be done and

                  the order in which these steps need to be done.

   After grasping the whole,

        you create a MANIFESTATION SEQUENCE -

        A Sequence of Steps - to materialize your project in the most logical & efficient manner.

        Then you determine the very next step that needs to be done -

             whether it is a momentous step or a casual simple one.

   Then, when you have clearly determined the next step in manifesting,

        you shift from Zooming Out to Zooming In (like switching from wide-angle to telephoto) - on this next step!

   You Zoom-In by concentrating all your thoughts only on

        the one next step that needs to be done!

   During this phase, you do not scatter your thoughts

        by considering the entire plan or by thinking about other steps.

   With the thought-force of all your mind focusing on just this next step,

        you begin to intuitively grasp and understand this reality in very great detail.

   You increasingly understand what needs to be done and the best order in which to do these things.  

        You are understanding the microcosm of how all the parts fit in—within this bubble of reality.

   With all your thoughts focused on just this next step,

        with the tremendous manifestation-thought-power this accumulates,

             you easily and quickly realize

                  what needs to be done and how to do it,

                       and then you do it!

   (Once again, Concentration does to thoughts what a lens does to light.)

Once all the steps within this microcosm are finished, you once again Zoom-Out—Ah yes, the over-view. It has changed now, because one step has been fulfilled since last time we viewed the over-pattern.

Again, while zoomed out on the whole,

   we quickly and irresistibly begin intuiting and understanding the full reality,

        noticing the interrelations between all the parts,

             realizing in great detail what needs to be done,

                  and then realizing what needs to be done next.

Once contemplation of the entire reality reaches a “ripe understanding”,

   the NEXT STEP becomes “crystal clear”.

Once this step has been determined, we Zoom-In once again, on this next step,

   and repeat this process of grasping, understanding, determining, and doing.

And when fully accomplished, we again Zoom-Out to see once again

   the full picture—seeing all the patterns and how they interact.

This contemplating eventually inevitably “ripens” your grasp

   of what needs to be done.

        And then your grasp of the next thing that needs to be done.

Once the NEXT STEP is clear, then we again Zoom-In

   with the conscious Intention to focus the full power of all our thoughts

        entirely on only the next step.

             This concentrated thought acts like a potent seed

                  quickly blooming and physicalizing its pattern,

                       by simply fulfilling that next step.

And so the cycle continues. Eventually, you Zoom-out to realize that

   your entire project is now exquisitely complete.

To manifest with the grace of effortless efficiency,

   cycle through zooming in and zooming out—

        zooming out to grasp the whole and determine the next logical step,

             and zooming in to do that next step.

The Blue Angels, we saw one day at a park, practicing their routine.  Routine.  For show.  Dangerous, well I don’t know how dangerous it is, for them who have practiced and trained and are experts at it, but of course it would scare me if I could ride in one, along for the ride.  Zooming by at racing speeds.  Blue angel.  Sad angel.  It makes me think.  

(Note: After I wrote all of this, I thought, maybe this sounds overly-negative and stereotyping of religion, and I know that certain religions and denominations are different, but for the religious group I am drawn to, these things seem common, based on my observations.  I know that not all religious people are like this,... And in the group I’m drawn to, as well, they do not all fall into all of these stereotypes,..  anymore than humans in general and culture and morals in human society, regardless of religion, fall for the same traps,..  

But in order to make sense of what I so commonly see, I have to air the dirty laundry and see what I so often see, in detail.  Even though many religious teachings actually warn and condemn the things that I speak of below, still, the truth is hypocrisy is rampant.  It’s like the whole, “Might makes right”, again, because maybe people in power do promote some good things, but they say how and when they have to be done in certain ways, and they say what you can and can’t say about it all.  Some go against the whole might makes right and think outside the box, see through some negative or contradictory messages in religions, and choose to lay them aside, and focus on the more positive and logical things in it, and the things that work within their own experiences.  That is what I want to do.  To make my own experiential, personal Jesus (ah yes, thank you, Depeche Mode, for that phrase).  The one who gives me messages, and signs and ideas that oftentimes go outside of religious rules and criticize them and promote things that are taboo in religion.  So that is what I want to talk about here...  Anyway, so that being said, here are the thoughts stirred up with the thoughts of the Blue Angels. 

It makes me think of more associations for me, feeding my mind’s intuitions and connections of ideas to express what I can’t say, that’s repressed. Suppressed, maybe a better word, yet to me it doesn’t contain the extent of stifling and unconscious dissociative forgetfulness that the trauma does to me when I try to think of certain things.  They bubble up to the surface, they sit there, halfway visible through the murky water, but then if I try to get closer, see them more clearly, they vanish again.  

Hmm,...  so let’s see,...  We are supposed to be angelic, to be fast, that is to say always busy, to do a lot, stay purposeful, never aimless, don’t be idle,...  and we’re for show.  We have to show the world our beliefs, show God we believe and are willing to do what he wants, and serve him, amply serve him, we have to spread our beliefs all around, and prove our loyalty in action so we know it’s not just words and thoughts, but “the real thing”.  

Religious things are for show, to prove we measure up, to correct our not measuring up and failing, the prescription for that, that they give, that we’re supposed to follow, if we believe what they say.  That is one association.  We are blue, we are sad,...  We are supposed to be sad, solemn, humble, serious, ever thinking of Heaven (and of Hell, and what to do to save ourselves and others so we go to Heaven and not Hell,...  And, so we don’t waste our lives with idleness and fun but always do somber, serious, good deeds, religious rituals, to prove our worthiness and show it, to ourselves, so we can know that we’re going to Heaven, and to others, so they can agree, yes, we’re going to Heaven, we’re safe, we’re good, not evil,... And so we can be  good example to save others too so that they can be helped with our example and likewise hopefully go to Heaven and not Hell.  And so they can be changed and transformed by our prayers too, so they can go to Heaven and not Hell, hopefully, because bit by bit the energy of our prayers an the grace we have obtained through God and the saints will influence them, maybe so slowly and outside of our external actions and awareness, working in their hearts.  So we have to perform by praying, praying, all the time.  ).   And the funny thing is I think some of this is really somewhat true, but not all the way.  There are holes and flaws in this simple, pared down paradigm. 

We are supposed to be for others, if the “others” here includes God, who can include and thus transcend all others, as for those who live lives of religious isolation ...  live for others, be selfless, giving, loving, whether by prayer or by action, but both are valid, even if we spend our time doing nothing but praying, not spending time with them, or nothing but trying to be a moral example to them and teach them, rather than interacting with their real feelings, ideas, and thoughts.  The grace of God can change them by our mystical energy and influence, that way.   And it seems like it’s really all for show for others, flashing by and performing feats for others, (or for our religious authorities as in the case of monastic life, and then, for the internalized God figure in our minds...  Which we have imbibed so thoroughly we believe totally in the God we made in our own image, because I do believe in God, but not the one they depict, in some ways).  

We are always trying, or thinking we should try, ...  to spend all our time just rushing to perform feats for others, or slaving away in religious rituals, either way working so hard, doing so much, never rest, idleness is the devil’s plaything.  Work of the soul, or of the body, or both, but work, work, never rest.  Or if you get to rest, you rest only in God’s presence, once again the rest is found inside of the work of worship, which starts to feel like joy and not work, once you are spiritually advanced enough,... And, so again, if you dare to say you’re not finding rest in the worship of God, then you have to repent and work hard, till you are given grace from God so that you can do better, because a good soul will find rest in God.  All the rest and all the joy they need they will find in either God and/or in serving others. 

We train hard our whole lives through but it makes it look so easy because we practiced our lives away to get so good at it you can’t see any strain in our actions and our behavior and our demeanor.  We look at peace, confident, and it all seems totally fitting and right. 

And with all this training, there is no time for just living, without an agenda and moral judgment for every action we take, ...  And we can’t just be spontaneous, ...  we have to make it look easy, though it’s rehearsed.  But we make it look easy, instead, like our whole life is authentically nothing but this performance, a sincere, willing, heartfelt performance.  If we fail we have to redirect our efforts not towards understanding why we failed or if we are allowed to fail but towards groveling for forgiveness and seeking to perfect our act, training, training, or if we know it’s actually an act, we hide that as much as we can because we keep trying till we can make the act real, and we’re too scared and ashamed to do anything but hide it from those who would attack us. We are too scared of Hell or of just being a bad person altogether, according to the ideas we’ve been taught,...  So we hide from our own minds the fact that we cannot even do this, that it’s not sincere, that it’s fake.  

The working hard, the training and striving and performing...  Is supposed to be our purpose in life.  It’s taught to us that this struggle is the only real, true way to be good, ...  It’s the only real authentic way of caring for what is in our hearts and souls, so it’s not really supposed to be a performance or just for show.  At least, that is what they say.  If you can make yourself believe it.  

And we humans and our minds are not that logical beyond a certain point, quite unconscious oftentimes, despite our illusions to the contrary,...  So because of that, if you tell yourself something enough times over and over every day and have it forced on you by your whole social environment too,... Well, you’ll believe it in time.  And if you have a whole set of rituals, books, and so on, prayers, fear-based ideas and belief and it all comes together and you believe.  The belief can last your whole life through.  Especially for the authorities you’re supposed to follow and to defer all your power and thought to their better judgment, supposedly better judgment.  And your friends, your family, all in social solidarity, uphold the illusion. For those in authority, they also sign away their freedom.  Everyone is in a hierarchy, and Everyone enforces the standards of behavior, belief and performance and the whole lifestyle, so very tight-knit and so very blanketing everything in your whole world you can’t see though this thick veil that distorts and outright blocks and alternative way of seeing or being.  The authorities aren’t free from pressure and being controlled.  They’re controlled by the need to measure up and be respected... the role they’ve been trained into from the time they were little beginner people aspiring on the path to being one of them, one of the ones who serve, who submit to the values they’ve been shaped and wrapped around with their whole lives growing up till at maybe their 20s they choose to do what is right, what they’ve been taught and compelled to believe is right their whole lives.

Tired of being stuck in a meaningless slump or on a confusing plateau?

Want to take some time and think about it, maybe write it out in a journal, but don’t know where to start?

Taking the time to write out our thoughts can help us clarify what we truly believe, and maybe even figure out our life purpose.

The following journal prompts are designed to help you clarify your thoughts, perspective, and desires. They are organized into four overarching categories:

Who are you?

What do you want?

What do you know/think you know/what to know?

What is your unique purpose?

Each prompt or group of prompts also comes with a brief explanation for why the prompt was included.

Without further ado, I give you…

THE PROMPTS

Who are you?

1. List the 5 people you spend the most time with, why, and how they’re affecting you — your behaviors, your thoughts, your life.

2. List the top 5 people you admire, and why.

3. Who is your favorite person in all the world and why?

In addition, we don’t just spend time with people we know, or people in real life. We also spend mental time with people we watch on TV, people we read about, or people whose works (books, articles, youtube videos) we consume. Who among these people do you admire most, and why? What are ways you can spend more time with the people you want most to be like? (For me, Desmond Doss is one of my personal heroes, even though I never met him in real life)

4. What is your favorite song/musical piece and why?

5. Or: what music do you regularly listen to and why? How do you feel after listening to it?

It’s important to consider what music you’ve been listening to, and how it affects you. Are your musical choices benefitting or hurting you? What does music mean to you?

6. List your top 5 favorite books/movies, and why.

According to writing coach, Lisa Cron, our brains are wired for story. How do stories resonate with you? What books are you drawn to? What themes do all your favorite books have in common? Redemption? Persistence? Something else?

The stories we consume affect the stories we tell. And we ALL tell stories — about ourselves, our lives, our world. How do your favorite writers see and interpret the world? You may find that it is very similar to the way YOU see and interpret the world, for better or for worse.

7. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why?

The famous Alcoholics Anonymous serenity prayer says:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.

We can’t always change things about ourselves, but you might be able to change more than you think. What would you like to change about yourself? Why haven’t you done it yet? Is there some step you can take to bring you closer to changing it?

8. What was the most painful thing you ever went through? What did you learn from it?

Pain impresses itself on our memories more than pleasure does.

There’s a reason that C.S. Lewis said:

Pain insists on being heard. God shouts to us in our pain. It is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.

Pain is often a teacher — for better or for worse. But if you’re anything like me, you don’t really like to think about pain that much. Still, you should ask yourself, at least once in your life, what was the most painful thing you went through? What did you learn from it?

Maybe you can figure out something that you learned, so that you do not waste your pain.

One caveat about this prompt: Do not spend TOO much time on this. It’s not healthy to dwell on negative things for long. Think about this question for a set amount of time, write down your answer, then move on.

What do you really want?

9. If you didn’t have to worry about money or people’s opinions, what would you do with your life?

10. What was your childhood dream and why? What happened to that dream and why?

11. What about your life makes you miserable? What do you know you need to give up?

12. How do you spend your time? On a weekday? On a weekend?

13. How do you spend your money?

14. Create an ideal budget for your time and money based on percentages (Ex with finances: 10% donations, 40% to live on, 20% to support family, 15% taxes, 10% savings, 5% fun stuff, or something) Why is this your ideal budget?

What you spend your time and money on indicates what things are a priority in your life.

If you want to really get into it, take a week and record (without changing anything) exactly how much time you spend on each activity. Don’t stop if it’s an “atypical” week. Do this for an extra week, if you like, and then look at your results. The answers may surprise you.

Same thing with your financial spending.

You may find that you’re not spending enough time/money on what you truly value. Alternatively, you may find yourself spending time and money on things you never expected, or you don’t want to spend time/money on anymore. In that case, cut those things out, and add in the things you do want.

What do you know/think you know/want to know?

15. What is a book you wish someone would write?

If you can’t write that book, why not? Are you not a good enough writer? Do you not know enough about that topic? In which case, should you be learning more about that topic, or about how to write? Which leads us to the next question…

16. What is the next thing you want to learn? And to what degree?

17. Define the following: Success. Wisdom. Love. Faith. Truth. Courage. Joy

In college, I once spent an entire philosophy class debating the definition of “wisdom.” Turns out, a lot of the words we use all the time and think we understand are not as clearly defined, even in our own minds, as we think they are.

Spend some time clarifying these terms in your own mind. Start with a lengthy definition that includes every caveat you can think of, then try shortening it into a pithy one-liner.

18. What do you think God is like?

If a relational God exists (which I believe He does, but am aware that not every reader may agree), your relationship to Him is the most important relationship in your life. Who do you want God to be? Who do you think God is, irrespective of who you want Him to be? What have others told you about Him? How has your vision of Him been impacted by your experiences?

The way you view God (whether or not He exists, whether or not He is good, kind, relational, loving, etc.) will impact the way you see yourself, others, your life, and the world.

What is YOUR unique purpose?

19. List all the things you think you SHOULD do, that you don’t want to do.

20. Or the opposite: what you SHOULD NOT do, that you do. Why?

Think about what you think you should/should not do, and why you feel that way? Is it culture or conscience that is telling you what you should/should not do?

Or look at this question from another angle: what is keeping you from doing or not doing that thing? Is the block inside or outside of you? What can you do about it? What have you tried doing about it? Have you done anything about it so far?

21. If your house burned to the ground, what are the top 1–3 things you would want to save? (not including people — assume your family is outside already)

This question will tell you what you value, what material goods are important to you? And why?

22. Who can you serve? OR Who do you want to serve?

Life isn’t meant for selfishness. We all can and should help others.

But we aren’t all meant to serve everyone. We all have different gifts and callings.

Just because your buddy is going to work with orphans in Kenya, doesn’t mean that’s YOUR purpose in life. Maybe you don’t feel a connection with orphans. Maybe you’re allergic to sun.

A human body is composed of many cells. White blood cells eat foreign invaders. Red blood cells transport oxygen and CO2. Muscle cells contract so the body can move. Neurons (brain cells) pass electric signals through the brain and down to the body. They all do different, but necessary, functions.

You may be an extrovert. Maybe you’d like to serve international students who need a warm meal and a guide to their new environment.

Or you may be particularly tender-hearted toward low-income families, and that’s who you want to serve.

Look at your life experience, your talents and abilities, and who your heart feels touched or softened toward. Look at the opposite — messages you may have internalized about who you should care about, but you really don’t. Then, maybe look for a way to start serving the people you are drawn to.

How to use the above prompts

Pick a few of these prompts — the ones that resonate the most with you — and get started.

If you’re just a beginning journaler, or you’re not at all sure about all of this, I suggest you take 15 minutes and do one. If you have time, or want to challenge yourself more, take an hour and write on 2 or more of these prompts.

You can also try answering each prompt twice: Once using stream of consciousness, without censoring yourself. Then try it again, this time thoughtfully and deliberately — and erase or delete as you like.

Do you see a difference between the two answers? Is your subconscious telling you something your conscious mind doesn’t want to hear?

Another thing you can do if you want to go deeper on any of these questions is to ask “why” and keep asking “why” until you feel satisfied with the answer.

Warning:

If at any point you start to feel hopelessly confused and distressed, cut bait. These prompts are designed to help you clarify your perspective, not mentally torture yourself. If it feels like torture, stop it.

Additionally, don’t spend ALL your time writing through these prompts. Maybe take a few hours one day and go through the prompts that you feel would be most relevant, then throughout the week or month, touch base with your written answers that you’ve discovered.

It’s not healthy to be overly introspective all the time. That’s called rumination. At some point, you need to take all you’ve thought about and learned, and put it to work — act, do, go!

Last but not least, be honest

However you decide to write, do your best to write honestly. This exercise is to help you. If you tried and don’t find it helpful, stop. If you’re only going to lie to yourself, stop.

But if you do choose to give it a try, give it an honest try. Burn your journal later if you have to, just get it out, at least once.

As Fyodor Dostoyevsky said:

Above all, don’t lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love. — The Brothers Karamazov

In conclusion

Life is not primarily a quest for pleasure, as Freud believed, or a quest for power, as Alfred Adler taught, but a quest for meaning. The greatest task for any person is to find meaning in his or her own life.

Some unfettered people with vain ideas crowded the scene, sending their inauspicious muttering throughout the world. At times, the collective conscience held its breath in the face of the noise they made, entering into a contemplation of silence. Then, the word fell into disrepute. Slaves acquired the seal of authority. Masses became toys of demagogy. They were manipulated to silence or action at will. Unsuitable persons were declared stars while many talented persons were barricaded from stardom. False pretensions and dialectical philosophy blocked logic and reasoning. Evil thoughts replaced decent ideas. The institutions from which society expected mercy and compassion were occupied by crude souls obsessed with hatred and animosity. Using these institutions, they sowed seeds of mischief among people, making them enemies of each other. Considerable damage was done to religious thought. The longstanding criteria were undermined and everything turned into chaos. Cups of sweet drink were replaced with goblets of poison, dishes of honey and cream with pots of filth, and light with darkness. In these dreadful and ominous eras, minds became so confused that people could not help but feel agitated even when they extended a hand to the most decent and noblest of things. Without trust, we referred to each other as "wild," "animal," "savage," and "barbarian." A small group of faithful and conscientious people, if they existed, were humiliated and rendered speechless. The slaves of darkness became ferocious while the souls who longed for light waited for a helping hand to appear on the horizon of miraculous blessings; they yearned for sunrises; they daydreamed of times that would emerge from mercy. When lips would twitch with the tiniest of smiles out of these considerations they were swept away by subsequent storms of worry; temporary moments of happiness were effectively replaced with years of sorrow. In line with the notion of "history repeats itself," the foregoing account applies to our time as well. All of a sudden, clear and sunny horizons are covered with mist and smoke, our view is blocked and our hearts shudder with gloom. Days of joy are dim. Darkness shades our thoughts; our wills are cracked, and our hopes are demolished. At times, one feels as if the sun will never rise again and that daylight will never appear. Unguided souls are shivering with internal desperation and resultant curses. As for us, as always, we are sure the he latest chaos boiling with filth will soon be terminated, and felicitous days will come in which the divine destiny will clear roads for our nation. As a matter of fact, stories of people of heart are already being related everywhere. Everywhere, pure souls are breathless with the desire to find the Paradise they have lost. Hundreds or thousands of people are meditating upon such considerations, contemplating the purpose of creation and the causes of nature. Yet, we are passing through a rather foggy period of time with respect to our spiritual lives. Moreover, a chilling wind blows for a while, filling the air with the vibration of sorrow. Even the places that overflow with ultimate joy are, from time to time, suffused with worry and despair. Nevertheless, we all know well that worry and despair can no longer stand firm. And when the horizons are bright to help us distinguish good from evil, all the hardships endured on the road will be immediately mitigated. Distances will readily submit to endeavors and efforts. Hills will turn into valleys, and valleys will become smoother; and then, ideals will be intertwined with the journey, and no trace of hardship will be felt in the face of the glamor of the horizons of the goal. Nowadays, hands are reaching out, though feebly, to the rope of the heart, and the breaths of the soul are heard everywhere. Reason and heart go hand in hand. Thought is embracing inspiration with its dazzling depths. Logic is subordinated to divine revelation. Science guides us to faith; knowledge is led by intuitive knowledge; laboratories raise apprentices to the prayer hall; wills are lively and resolute with the help of the water of life that is offered by faith; eyes wander on the same horizons with insight; contradicting physics, metaphysical springs emerge everywhere. It seems obvious that snow or ice, however cold they are, cannot survive long in the face of the heat kindled in the sources. Blizzards, however strong they are, will fail to extinguish the torches protected by the lanterns of the natural tendencies of human nature - as long as it is permitted by God. Although, at times, most of us turn crimson red, shivering with various worries or making a fuss over strong winds, it is obvious that we send our warmest smiles to our surroundings like roses bursting from their buds, effervescing like nightingales flitting from one branch to another. We cannot deny the fact that our hearts leap with hope and expectation for the sounds of "waterfalls of life" to reach us, for "the white hand"[1] to hover over our heads. The already awakened souls ponder these considerations with confidence; it is as if they have reached the borders of their hearts, and are full of joy with the enthusiasm of having sensed the odors of the Paradise, however slight its trickle may be. Yes, those capable of filtering current events through their hearts and souls can feel the coming of spring, which brings a shining sun and all the shades of green under foot. Waterfalls of assistance and effort gurgle in the bed of divine blessings, heading toward the sea free from all obstacles; they pass over or bypass any obstruction they face and they try to represent the mission endowed by divine destiny in detail with the beautiful geometric lines they leave behind. As they walk, the roads hail them; seemingly insurmountable obstacles are flattened and nullified, as if they are prostrating themselves before these holy ones. As a matter of fact, this state is always the case for the matured souls: at all times, they send fragrance to their surroundings like censers. Burning like sticks of incense, they convey the joy of burning to everybody through their moans. When necessary, they roar like lions, displaying their characters. When necessary, they sing like nightingales, filling souls with joy and relief. Their foreheads have been impressed with the seal of being both dear and humble; they are neither oppressed nor are they tyrants. It is a spectacular sight when they show their modesty before their Lord, acting humbly to the highest extent. In short, they are the heroes who have managed to merge lion-like manners with dove-like customs in the same vessel, and those who are gifted in getting to know their inner profundities always want to be with them. How I wish my body would always shiver like swaying tress before my Lord in a state of openness to this delicacy, knocking on His door with a yearning for acceptance! How I wish I could occupy myself with my own faults instead of concentrating on the errors I observe here and there, to ignore their mistakes! How I wish I could detect my own defects and failures at each beat of my pulsing heart! It is my sincere wish that the values to be weighed on the scale of life be the products of conscientious reckoning that have been filtered through my internal contemplations. It is my sincere wish that my scale of acquisitions is always full to the greatest extent, and that all credit is attributed to Him for my acquisitions - I continuously long to completely forget comfort and languor, to seek the peace of the heart in toil, and to become calm with hardship.
