A Dogs True Purpose

I found my Sasha on Facebook shortly after I lost my beloved German Shepherd, Sheba. For the few months I was without a canine companion, I thought I’d never have another dog. Losing Sheba was too much for me. That’s when Sasha’s ad popped up in the side column of my Facebook wall. “Very sweet, loving girl surrendered for being ‘untrainable,’” it read boldly and one look at her “mug shot” had me calling the shelter, which was a solid 2.5 hour drive one-way across the state of Ohio. I rounded up my family on a Friday morning and we made the drive to go pick up our new family member.

When I first saw Sasha’s photo, a thought crossed my mind: I missed Sheba dearly, and to this day my heart aches that she’s gone. But she had a good, long life, and in the short period of time we had her (we adopted her as a senior) she was able to live the last few years of her life in luxury, spoiled beyond belief and the happiest dog in the world.

These photos are of my Sasha: happy, healthy and spoiled rotten just like her heavenly big sister was. They never met, but I know Sheba would have loved her just as much (if not more) than we do. My dogs have taught me compassion and true unconditional love for all beings, as well as these golden rules to life:

• Never forget to make time for play.

• Always leave room for a treat, you probably deserve it.

• When there’s no music, make your own.

• Greet every new person you meet with enthusiasm; they’ll like you more.

• Love your loved ones wholly and unconditionally, no matter what.

And probably the most important:

NEVER turn down a car ride with your best friend; Adventures make the best memories, and memories will last LONG after the moment is gone.
