Januar 2025 (What a year, huh?). Der deutschen Kartoffel geht es ja grundsätzlich schlecht, aber der Januar hatte auch einiges zu bieten, um das nicht wirklich besser zu machen.

In unserer letzten Show vor der kurzen Pause (bis März) widmen wir uns den Themen Verwahrlosung, Frust, Verzweiflung, Wut, Tod und Verderben und wagen eine musikalische Annäherung an die ersten Releases des Jahres 2025. Unser Fazit: Doom fetzt, HM2-Cult und Vampiric Black Metal auch. Aber hört selbst.

I was checking my list of movies on one cinema-related web page and came across The Endless. Amazing movie it is, I am into such kind of movies. Still feeling bad for not watching it in the theater. So when I run into it in my list I immediately recalled Chaos Deathcult song by Zyklon. Sometimes there are odd connections that tend to be established among different things, I would say. Nevertheless, it was a sweet sweet memory. When guys in my band handed me the disc with the first Zyklon album I was so fascinated! I remember I thought: man, this is the next step in extreme metal! As we all were into such acts as Zyklon and Myrkskog, we even started to incorporate some bits of pieces of music influenced by them. And this very song, along with Pillar Deconstruction by Myrkskog were kinda milestones to me. I reckon, because of electronic parts in the end. Shit, that was such a great time!..

“Ion” (PORTAL)

Music is a weird thing sometimes. Have you ever seen that two people have completely different opinions about the same piece of music? How a song can mean the world to one person but makes the other throw up his lunch, breakfast, dinner and his entire digestive system? Why is this relevant, you ask?

See, I only checked this album because Anthony Fantano, the Internet's busiest music nerd, gave this album a 9/10. Seen that he knows his stuff, understands the appeal of several genres and takes the effort to elaborate his opinion, I decided to give it a go and euhm, nope, for me this is the remaining 1/10.

Portal play this fusion of black and death metal that at moments reminded me of Myrkskog's debut "Death Machine". Given the fact that I at best feel indifferent about the album, that’s not exactly a compliment.

There are two things that bother me about the album. One is the production. Normally I don't give two shits about production because it doesn't matter all that much, or at least not for genres like metal, punk and rock.

To prove this statement, I always come up with the example of Agnostic Front's seminal EP "Victim in Pain". If you look at it from a producer's point of view, this album is a mess. The band rather plays fast than tight, in the title track guitarist Vinnie Stigma plays one of the worst solo's I've ever heard, the drums sound like they were recorded in the studio next door. And yet, it makes sense in the context of NYHC's early days where you had to force things to make that scene happen and that primitive energy, that sense of danger you want from a genre like hardocre is there.

"Ion" has that same, raw, almost "dank" production: non-existant bass (to be honest I didn't bother looking up if they even have a bassplayer), a kick reduced to a rumble. However, there is one thing that "Victim in Pain" did right and "Ion" doesn't, the vocals. Roger Miret never sounded as weak or “breathy” as the singer of Portal. The vocals could have used some EQ'ing, some effects to sound fuller, to sound more powerful because that is what you’d want for a genre like this. That was one.

The second and more important problem for me is that at no point did I detect anything even remotely resembling an artistic direction. Even more, it doesn't feel as an album to me but rather a collection of exercises that were thrown together. There are a few moments that caused a bit of excitement but they happened so far into the album that  by that point I had stopped caring. I won't be going over the songs because at best, this is just bleak wallpaper music, at worst this is a migraine attack.

So, Portal, "Ion", any good? Urgh. No. I've sat through this entire thing and afterwards it left such a bad taste in my mouth that I didn't even want to hear any music for the rest of the day.  Plus, I feel bad for writing this review.
