Riven remake announced
#RivenRemake announced - #Riven #Cyan #StarryExpanse #videogames #elmundotech
As Riven, the sequel of the adventure game Myst, turns 25, game developer Cyan announced it is working on a modern Riven remake. Via the Riven remake’s FAQ page, the developer explains why it has taken so long to bring the game back. “Riven is one of the most highly regarded games in Cyan’s history. We didn’t want to approach it lightly or frivolously. Cyan is a small indie studio. We wanted to…

Steam vr supported cards
Tumblr media
STEAM VR SUPPORTED CARDS FREE
While there have been few problems with the right tools, proceed at your own risk. Idle Master, in comparison, no longer appears to be supported. It also gets more updates and support to its open source code, so it’s the pick of the two and more popular with the Steam card community these days. Archi Steam Farm doesn’t require the Steam client running to be active, and supports multiple accounts. If the idea of a VAC ban unnerves you, Archi Steam Farm (ASF) avoids Steam Idle Master’s occasional VAC issues by using a different mechanism to trigger card drops. Steam Idle Master documentation and FAQs warn of VAC errors if you run the utility along with a secured game simultaneously, so make sure you close out of it and then exit Steam completely before reopening Steam and playing any games protected by SteamGuard. It’s not clear what Valve thinks of this practice, but people have been using Steam idle utilities for years with few issues. It'd be better to have a VR-ready machine if you really want to enjoy the experience this year.Which should you use? We'll lay out the details below, but we recommend Archi Steam Farm for your card collecting needs. That doesn't sound like the ideal situation to be in after spending $600-$800 on a brand new VR HMD. Follow the recommended and minimum specs for each VR title." Others may opt to display with reduced visual fidelity to support smooth framerates. "Your system is capable of rendering medium (or low, depending on the GPU) fidelity VR but does not meet the recommended spec! Some VR titles will have been tuned to display only at recommended visual fidelity and may not run on this system. Here's what the Results page states for a system with a "capable" rating: Just because the SteamVR Performance Test says your system is "capable" doesn't mean you'll be able to run all the games, nor does it mean you'll enjoy the experience.
STEAM VR SUPPORTED CARDS FREE
Developers are free to optimize so that their games work on lower-end hardware, but most will likely put more effort into making games run smoothly on a GTX 970 or R9 290. Incidentally, Oculus is asking for the same level of hardware for its VR system. There's a big difference between VR-ready and VR-capable.Ī VR-ready system meets the specifications set forth by HTC and Valve for developers to target when they build VR games. If you own a GeForce GTX 960, a Radeon R9 380X or even a pair of R9 380s, you might be thinking to yourself, "Excellent! I can run VR games on my system," and you'd be forgiven for thinking that. And while it does post the best result we've seen so far, the R9 380X is still only ranked "capable," driving average fidelity with a score of 4.6. The Myst Edition card is overclocked though, so if any card under the recommended cut-off can get a toe in the door, it'd be this one. Next, we tried our luck with PowerColor's R9 380X Myst Edition, one step down from AMD's VR-ready Radeon R9 390. Again, this configuration was rated "capable." The score jumped slightly to 3.7, still in the medium fidelity range. XFX's R9 380 4GB manages medium fidelity and kicks back a score of 3.3, which the SteamVR Performance Test deems "capable." We added a second R9 380 (a 2GB model) and ran both cards in CrossFire. And because nearly 25 percent of the time is spent under 90 FPS, Valve's tool calls this dual-GPU setup "not ready."ĪMD's mid-range GPUs fare somewhat better than Nvidia's, especially in multi-GPU configurations. Add a second board, however, and watch your score fall to 2.2. A single Zotac GTX 960 Amp! Edition claws its way up to 3.3, enough to achieve medium fidelity. The GTX 960, also based on GM206, is marginally better. As a result, our system's score dropped to 1.2, yielding a "not ready" rating. But SLI doesn't work the same in VR and Nvidia hasn't perfected its mechanism for rendering individual screens with separate GPUs yet. A pair of 950s offers similar gaming performance as a GeForce GTX 970, so we were hoping for more from this configuration. The only real reason we included the 950 was to harness two of them together in SLI. With a score of 2.3, the GM206-based board suffered low fidelity in exchange for a high-enough frame rate. We didn't expect it to return a "capable" result, though. Valve, HTC and even Oculus recommend high-end graphics hardware, so it isn't a surprise that the GeForce GTX 950 wasn't up to par.

About Myst
Myst’s concept, at its most simple, is based on the ‘Mystery Man’ in the gray room whose entrance only appears in about 2% of game files created for Undertale. Traditionally speaking, the person you encounter in here is assumed to be Gaster, though there’s no actual confirmation of that given anywhere in game. The sprite’s filename is, after all, only ‘mysteryman’. Some canny observers have noticed that if you turn this sprite upside down, the black side of it also happens to look like a face, which is what I have based Myst’s design on.
(Just a brief disclaimer before the fandom jumps down my throat, lol, but I also personally assume that the mystery man IS Doctor Gaster. This was just a fun idea I had and ran with.)
[Character Information under the cut]
History: Dr. Myst was, once upon a time, a scientist in the Underground whose research focused on the theory of the universal wave function, and was often at odds with Dr. Gaster not just on the best way to free monsterkind, but for funding from the capital as well. Myst’s hope was that if the barrier in their own world could not be broken, perhaps they could simply go to an alternate one where the barrier had already been broken, or never cast in the first place. With options on realities being theoretically infinite, it was possible they might find a completely unoccupied world they could simply move into and make their own.
The Royal Scientist was unimpressed, but Asgore was intrigued enough to continue funding Myst’s work. Myst made progress by leaps and bounds, and when he finally finished his grand machine, he tested it. He tested it on rocks, then plants, then the various bugs and fish one could find around the Underground. He wasn’t sure exactly where these things went, but when they came back, they were always still alive, and so… it only made sense that he should be the first monster test subject.
‘The Gray Room’ was his masterpiece; built in waterfall, well away from anyone that might get hurt should something go awry, it presented only as a simple gray door from the outside. Within was a similarly simple, small, gray room that would react with glowing control displays only in his presence. It was minimalist, to say the least, but brilliant all the same. Rather than physically moving from location to location, the Gray Room phased from reality to reality; like an elevator between universes. It always appeared in the same physical location in Waterfall, though the world in which it manifested was completely different from the last.
When Myst used it for the very first time, it worked like a charm. Unfortunately, doing so had unforeseen consequences that not even he could have predicted.
It turned out that the universe did not much like people moving freely among its many realities. Or perhaps it was simply the Gray Room itself attempting to process too many variables and, in the end, deciding to reconcile them all into a single common denominator with which it could more ably contend.
Whatever the reason behind it, and however it happened, every version of Myst that existed across any and all realities were plucked from their timelines and combined into a single entity. He no longer remembers exactly what reality he originated from, and is now faced with the curious fact that he belongs both everywhere and...nowhere. Not only that, but the process erased all hint of him from every universe he’s traveled to. Granted, he was physically changed by the event, but even his name does not trigger any sort of recognition no matter where he goes.
His memories of life before first using the Gray Room seem to be primarily those of the version of him that created the thing. However, he gains the occasional flash of insight from the depths of the memories that linger beneath the surface, leftover from all those other versions of himself.  It took him some time to figure this out, though once he realized he was unable to return from whence he came, he had all the time in the world to do so.
During his initial test of the machine, he had created a recall mechanism for the Gray Room, but now there was no one to press it. In fact, there was a good chance that because every trace of him had been removed from all realities, any evidence of his creation had vanished as well. It occurred to Myst, as time went on, that even if he were able to return to his world, the Gray Room was no longer a viable option for their escape, not without potentially causing tremendous damage to reality as a whole by tearing all of monster kind from its very fabric. Thus resigned, Myst travels from world to world, exploring and hoping to find some clue that will help him further refine his machine and allow him to transport people across realities without suffering the same fate as him.
Personality: Despite the many trials and tribulations Myst has been through since initially leaving his world, he remains a kind monster with a good sense of humor and impeccable manners. One thing he has learned is that a little patience, forethought, and flattery will get a person just about anywhere, no matter what reality they happen to find themselves in.
This does not, of course, mean his patience is infinite. When it does run out, he tends to snap pretty catastrophically and launch headfirst into a tirade of the sort to raze entire villages. It is only then, or when he is taken truly off guard by something well out of the realm of normal that he’ll actually start to swear. Otherwise, he’s far more likely to get creative with his insults when he feels a need to employ them.
Myst possesses a voracious hunger for new knowledge and is always a keen student to the willing master, no matter the subject. The sciences come easy to him, though he has resolutely pursued the arts as well out of a sheer pigheaded desire to be adept at those too. History is troublesome, however, considering how frequently he travels between universes, so he generally doesn’t bother beyond a general study of how small actions can lead to tremendous consequences on the geopolitical stage.
Diplomatic almost to a fault, unless you are close to him, it can sometimes be difficult to get an honest opinion out of Myst. He considers himself an observer, there to learn, so he’s generally unwilling to speak up overmuch or reveal his own thoughts on a matter. That said, in times of crisis, he can be prone to taking control of a situation without necessarily asking himself if he should. Myst always means well in these situations, believing he is doing what needs to be done for the good of all, but many often see it as being offensively high-handed for one who professes themselves to be an outsider. The habit likely stems from the fact that he is constantly on his own, and has long since become accustomed to solving his problems on the fly with no one else to lean on for assistance.
Trivia:
Myst’s magic is extremely powerful thanks to the fact that he’s essentially many souls combined into one, but it is completely unpredictable. Because different versions of him used different kinds of magic, they all try to come out at once, and he never knows what he’s going to get next. He could try to burn an enemy with fire and wind up healing them instead. As such, he uses it only in life or death situations where he has literally no other options.
Gravity’s grip on him seems to be erratic, though the why of this remains an unknown. If Myst becomes too distracted, he will start to float, or find himself walking up surfaces he really shouldn’t be able to. If he notices too abruptly he will fall. Years of practice, however, has allowed him to control this strange phenomenon to his advantage so long as he is in the right state of mind.
Uses duodecimal math in almost everything he does unless decimal serves better.
Has six fingers on both hands (which might be what inclined him to duodecimal math in the first place)
Statistically speaking, Myst is practically immortal. Every time he is killed, one of his souls is destroyed, as is his body. The remaining souls, however, reconstitute him over the course of about a day, which is useful, but extraordinarily painful. He also loses any memories that were linked with the soul that was destroyed.
Inventory:
Bottomless Bag - It’s not literally bottomless, but it is definitely bigger on the inside and capable of carrying a great deal of necessities and trinkets.
Leather Journal - A book that he carries everywhere with him to take notes on the new things he learns in every reality he visits. Also doubles as his personal diary. Seems to have an impossible number of pages despite looking like a normal book. He prefers using it to the many types of tech he has that could serve the same purpose since it is enchanted against damage and he doesn’t have to worry about it shorting out.
Invisibility Cloak - Not what the wizard that sold it to him called it, but Myst’s been to enough universes with Harry Potter to call a spade a spade. Only lasts for a few minutes at a time before having to recharge.
Weaponry - Because his magic is so completely unreliable, Myst has been forced to become adept in many kinds of weapon to keep himself in once piece without sticking out in whatever reality he happens to have landed.
Well that’s all I have for now! Feel free to drop an ask about or to Myst if you want to learn more about him!

Ask: The Mysterious Package
Tumblr media
[Text of Ask: “Hi! I have a question about the mystery box #2. A family friend just received the same box. Did you find any information on this box?”]
 Ah!  Yes, the MysteEeEeEerious 👻 PackaAaAaAage 👻 {spooky inflection • wiggling fingers}.
For a refresher on what the anon is referring to, please see my first two posts on the subject [here] and [here].
As I expanded on in my reblog of post 1, it turns out this part of a [Mysterious Package Company] immersive story experience. As they put it, in their FAQ entry on [What is an Experiance]:
An Experience is what we call our immersive stories; stories meant to draw you into their world and blur the lines between reality and fiction. A story will reveal itself to you through contents you receive in the mail, manifesting in carefully crafted documents, photographs, artifacts, and other paraphernalia designed to lure you deeper into the tale. You must piece together these seemingly disjointed items and find the mystery lurking at the heart of the Experience.
The packages I received were part of their Demon Jar experience. The link I added in my reblog of post 1 no longer works, unfortunately :(  It’s a shame because their new [Demon Jar page] doesn’t have as much on it as the last one did. It’s still something, though, so I’ve archived, [here], to make sure I don’t lose the info again.
I hope the knowledge of it essentially being a puzzle game for you to decrypt and solve will take some of the “wtf?” out of it for your friend XD  I don’t want to ruin anything for you, so that’s all I’ll say on the matter… but there are some spoiler-tagged posts on Reddit where people walk through their experiences solving the mystery; I urge you to try piecing it all together for yourself first before having it spoiled for you, though.

Note
Do our pieces have to be really detailed or include a background?
That’s a great question! They should be at least fully colored and have a good amount of effort put into it (which may entail including a background depending on the style, but sometimes simplicity is good). However, we are not absolutely requiring insane amounts of detail because we are more stressing the emotion and interpretation of the songs that will be assigned to the artists. We will have the WIP check later that will allow us to tell you ahead of time if there are any issues. Overall you should not worry about being extremely detailed.
I have updated the faq with a similar question.

I've read a Twitter thread that talked about how a lot of the early video game fandom in 80s were quite egalitarian and were even open to women joining, but that changed during the 2000s where a lot of game studios closed and the rise of online services allowed young children and teens that didn't understand complex games to enter the gaming fandom. From your experience, do you agree and think it's true that 2000s was a turning point that culminated the toxic community that we see today?
Tumblr media
Nah. I was there. I was working in the industry during the 2000s and there already weren’t a lot of women in the industry back then. No, it actually goes back even earlier than that - back to the mid-80s, when the higher-ups decided to market games only towards boys. After the video game crash of 83-84 and subsequent revival by Nintendo in 1985 with the NES, video game marketing was retargeted towards boys in the West. Before then, you had some really big name developers who were women - women like Roberta Williams, Jane Jensen, Dona Bailey, Anne Westfall, and Joyce Weisbecker.
Tumblr media
Since game marketing was laser-targeted at boys, it pushed the boys who played the games in the 80s to become the next generation of game developers in the 90s, and that inertia has been an influencing factor in the industry ever since. That led to games becoming even more boy-oriented in the 90s - your Doom, Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, etc. There were outliers though - one of the biggest games of all time was Myst, which was marketed towards everybody that had a CD-ROM. Japan also hadn’t pushed as hard on the marketing towards boys and Nintendo was still dedicated to the family-friendly entertainment they’ve always been.
Tumblr media
The 2000s actually brought a lot more women (and their money) into video gaming. Casual gaming exploded onto the scene with Facebook and mobile devices. Huge hits like the Guitar Hero and World of Warcraft pulled women into the hobby like a gravity well. That’s been fantastic because it’s also come hand-in-hand with an expansion in the kinds of games we’re making and an expansion in the sort of ideas and insights we come up with. That’s led us into the 2010s where we’ve seen an overall industry-wide trend towards inclusivity and diversity in games.
The FANTa Project is currently on hiatus while I am crunching at work too busy.

Project: c[O]da - FAQ
What is this Project, Commander?
We have been tasked to analyze and reproduce sound data as images. These images will then be compiled into a booklet to be distributed to all unmotivated androids. Glory…to mankind.
The heck does c[O]da mean?
Define coda:  a musical term that refers to “a passage that brings a piece/movement to an end.” It usually requires a musician to look back at a previous part of the music with the purpose of achieving a “sense of balance.”  We’ve played the game; now it’s time to turn back, reminisce, and fill the empty void within us. As for the [O] part, that’s style. Got a problem?
What non-profit organization will the remaining profits go to?
We are looking into the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, which provides research grants to scientists in attempt to study and help find cures for various mental illnesses. More info is available on their website. We think this game is heavily psychological in nature, so this would be within our theme and interest. If you have a suggestion for a different charity, send in an ask!
Where is the proposed schedule?
Check out the sidebar on this blog for general proposed deadlines. You may also click this link for the official post! These are definitely subject to change and may be pushed back as we approach them!
Will the participating artists receive a copy of the fanzine?
We will try our best to make this happen, but we cannot make a premature promise. Everything rests on the sales figures. All artists will for sure receive a digital pdf copy once everything is compiled.
Will this fanzine be sent to Yoko Taro and some voice actors?
That is the plan! We’re not sure about how many voice actors, but we plan to at least send this to Kyle McCarley (voice of 9S) and Kira Buckland (voice of 2B) for sure! When the time is right, we will review our options.
Will there be spoilers present in the zine?
Unfortunately, yes. Due to the subject matter being music throughout the game, spoilers are pretty much unavoidable. We highly suggest you play through as much as possible if you haven’t finished the game yet.
Can I enter pre-existing artwork I’ve made for this zine?
No. We want the content to be new and exclusive to the zine for at least the months that we’re creating it and some time during and after orders are complete. That being said, we strongly encourage posting of cropped previews as we proceed! Tag us or message us a link so we can reblog/retweet them from you!
Does the artwork have to correspond 100% to the song it represents?
We’re more going for establishing a feeling or mood that goes along with the OST. For example, Emil’s Shop is a silly song, so the drawing’s atmosphere should be something light rather than heavy. It doesn’t necessarily HAVE to contain Emil in it, but it should at least match with the song’s playful nature! During the WIP check-in date, Command will also evaluate the drawing so far and give a heads up if the drawing’s direction seems too far off.
Are there any other restrictions for the artwork?
We will not condone any extremely explicit content (anything nsfw including nudity, hardcore gore, etc…) in this fanzine. Blood is ok as long as it does not go overboard (the WIP check will notify artists if their piece is too out of line). In addition, regarding the amount of detail required, we do not have any firm restrictions here. The art pieces must be at least fully colored, but depending on your interpretation of the song, you can make it simplistic or highly detailed with a background at your leisure. We are more concerned with expression and interpretation; sometimes simple can be better and more effective, depending on your style! You should know best.
What will be the zine size?
The dimensions will be 6 x 9 inches and all images will have 300 dpi resolution. In pixels, this equates to 1800 x 2700 pixels for a single page and 3600 x 2700 pixels for a double page spread (calculated from multiplying each individual dimension by the resolution). There will be an estimated 30+ pages within this booklet.
What will be the extra bonus content/merchandise?
Extra merchandise will consist of 4 postcards as well as a sticker sheet with 8 stickers. 3 charm designs have been drawn by Commander Myst. Artists for bonus content have been contacted and were selected based on their application responses.
What should be the format for the submissions?
Every artist will provide their image file in either PNG or JPEG format. Those who have Photoshop will provide a psd file edited from the provided layout file as well. Artists may choose to either submit a single page, 2 single pages, or a double page spread (whatever their time commitment allows). Will artists be allowed to sell their submissions once this project is complete?
All participating androids in this project retain full rights to their submissions and will be allowed to sell their artwork as prints or whatever merchandise they like after Command gives them the green light. Once all orders are shipped out, we will allow for the posting of your complete submissions on your social media accounts. At this point, selling your work is allowed.
Who’s in Command?
Commander Myst is highly amused that you are asking such a question to The Commander. Operator Smiles is always at your service!
