Have you been to MyTown Shopping Center? It is located right next to Ikea Cheras (It’s actually connected to Ikea).

There are hundreds of shopping centers in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor and I have been to some of them (not all yet 😅) but what I can share is, MyTown is one of the most kids friendly mall we’ve been to.

Why did I say kids friendly?

In Year of the Dog, Malaysia plays down, skirts dog decorations

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Some Malaysian businesses are skirting around or playing down the portrayal of canines in Chinese New Year decorations this year, wary of offending the country’s Muslim majority in the Year of the Dog.

Dogs are considered “unclean” under Islamic tradition and Muslims are required to carry out a ritual of washing themselves if they are in contact with the animal.

Multicultural Malaysia has seen an increasing intolerance toward activities considered insulting to Islam, reflected in protests in recent years of beer festivals and concerts.

While Muslim Malays are the biggest ethnic group among Malaysia’s 32 million people, Chinese make up the second-biggest group with 23 percent of the population.

One shopping mall in the popular Kuala Lumpur tourist area of Bukit Bintang did not depict dogs in its decorations ahead of the new year in February, focusing instead on the 10th anniversary theme of the center, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

Director of Marketing Kung Suan Ai said religious and cultural sensitivities were a determining factor in conceptualizing decorations. The mall attracts three million people of various backgrounds each month, she said.

“One of the considerations we take in when we work on decoration concepts for Pavilion KL is to create something highly experiential… and also to be socially accepting (for) all,” she said.

Twelve animals, including a dog and a pig, another animal Muslims consider as unclean, make up the traditional Chinese zodiac.

Malaysian Muslim leaders have been vocal about events that involve dogs before. After the 2014 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in Glasgow, when athletes paraded with a Scottish terrier donning their country’s name, local politicians aired their disproval, calling the stunt “disrespectful”.

In 2016, religious authorities asked popular pretzel chain Auntie Anne’s to change the name of its “Pretzel Dog” to “Pretzel Sausage”.

At MyTOWN, another Kuala Lumpur shopping center where half the visitors are Muslim, the mall downplayed the depiction of dogs in its decorations.

“We have the dogs but it’s in how we (display) them. They are not the main object. They are life size and placed as ambient decorations,” said Head of Marketing Christopher Koh, so that the canine would not appear like an idol.

“It’s the same with the pig (for the Year of the Boar), Malaysian retailers won’t usually put up a giant pig as a centerpiece.”

Alex Chow, who runs a company supplying packaging materials, said corporate clients have stuck to generic illustrations for their packaging designs this year.

Chinese Malaysian Wong Wei-Shen, who has several dogs as pets, said businesses were being “ridiculous”.

“It’s a shame because Malaysia is a multicultural country. To dismiss the fact that the Chinese have a dog as one of the zodiac animals is unfair,” said Wong.

“Every zodiac animal has its good attributes, and the dog represents a guide, a best friend, a comforter and loyal friend.” said Wong.

came here for food with family as we wanted to visit ikea which is next door, and this place has good reviews. their menu has lots of different set meals to choose from, which is suitable for families and groups to suit different preferences.

i picked the vegetable nabe with grilled salmon set, it comes with white rice, pickles and a small bowl of french beans and jelly as well. the soup has really strong ginger taste, if you love ginger, you will enjoy this soup very much, for me it was alright since i’m not a fan of ginger. the salmon is good, not too cooked or dry, just perfect moisture and the lemon and radish is a good compliment.

overall service here is good, their staff are quite responsive even though the restaurant is full, did not wait too long for all our food to arrive as well. other set meals ordered by my family was also nice and we enjoyed it. the pricing is also rather reasonable which is a huge plus point. and the best part about this place is that it’s inside a bookstore, the interior and surroundings are just so nice.

bananabro, mytown shopping center.

came here for the first time with colleagues, although i do pass by the store in different malls quite a few times before. having banana leaf restaurant in a mall is something that stands out because normally indian restaurants that serves banana leaf adopts the open air concept at shop lots instead.

the basic meal with unlimited rice, curry and vegetable condiments are very reasonably priced, and you may add on any protein you prefer, or just have it like this. they also have sets from groups to share the protein, which i highly recommended, cos we couldn’t finish our food.

the curry does smells good and it’s very appetizing, i love the deep fried cucumber and the pumpkin puree as well, just so addictive and enjoyable. their fried squid ring and chicken is really fragrant, crispy on the outside and the batter is flavorful.

the meal is indeed quite heavy, especially this was lunch time, but very satisfying and enjoyable overall. it’s not something that i could eat very often, but once a while indulgence is nice.

jyu jyu-tei by nihon shoku, mytown shopping center.

came across this japanese restaurant that sells wagyu steak and decided to give it a try. their menu is really simple, so i just ordered wagyu steak with demiglace sauce, it comes with sweet corn, vegetables and potato, and white rice.

the meat patty is quite thick, the sauce is very flavorful and on the saltier side, which means eating with rice is important. the texture is soft which is enjoyable, and the smell is not strong, which is important for me.

the staff is quite efficient, although we did wait quite long for the food, even not during peak meal hours. the set meal price is also quite reasonable and food portion is satisfying over all. would recommend if you like to try wagyu steak for once, as they have different sauces to choose from too.

mighty monster, mytown shopping center.

visited this cafe last month with friends, kinda got to know about this place online and saw that the interior looks nice. their menu is pretty simple, not too much variety, mostly fusion style.

i ordered the mighty duck ramen, which comes with smoked duck, egg, seaweed and miso based broth. the soup is indeed quite unique and i quite enjoy the taste, only thing is that it dries up pretty quickly. the mfc sandwich is big, with sweet potato fries, if you want fried chicken, this is a nice choice. butter crab pasta looks appetizing, and the portion is pretty filling as well.

the service here is just so-so though, even though the ambiance is quite enjoyable and the food is alright. overall an okay experience, but no surprises nor there’s anything special about the cafe.
