I am reading... The Five Star Stories! A deliciously elegant work, but something I've noticed is that there is a certain fascination with hermaphroditic imagery, and Emperor Amaterasu-no-Mikado (also known as Ladios Sopp) is the focal point of this. They, as a character, are treated with the utmost respect, utter reverence from all those in their presence. They are not presented like a pervert or a sexual deviant, they are well-groomed, compassionate, and charismatic.
Obviously The Five Star Stories is a Japanese work, beginning in 1989, and it follows the tradition of 1983's Stop!! Hibari-kun! in which Amaterasu is exclusively referred to with masculine pronouns regardless of their presentation, so I can't really praise it for being ahead of its time in regards to gender expression and acceptance of trans bodies, but it's definitely ahead of the competition in the sense that Ladios is viewed as unquestionably beautiful, and not an object of revulsion or a punchline.
It's the imagery of the demonic baphomet but instead belonging to a wholly angelic figure. My bar for transfeminine representation in media is low, it should be said, but FSS is really quite refreshing, honestly.
I've only just finished the first volume now (which was absolutely brilliant by the way), so I can't say for certain as to how things turn out (as it's to my understanding that, later on, at least for a period of time, Amaterasu presents completely as a woman) but so far, Mamoru Nagano's crown jewel is just really a spectacular read, and I recommend it in all its incomprehensible glory, enthusiastically, and to anyone who has eyes, solely because it looks like this:

And I think that's pretty cool.
