somehow my thoughts right now are both
"WDYM IT'S BEEN 5 YEARS SINCE THE LAST GAME?? I THOUGHT I FIRST PLAYED IT A YEAR AGO?!?!"
and
"WDYM IT'S BEEN 5 YEARS SINCE THE LAST GAME?? I THOUGHT SALEM CAME OUT 8 YEARS AGO?!?!?"
Tumblr media
oh, and also "WDYM THE GAME RELEASES IN 5 DAYS?? I THOUGHT IT WAS DEAD?!?"

I remember seeing someone on r/nancydrew say that Nancy Drew: Mystery of the Seven Keys would be a great game if it was anything but a Nancy Drew game, and, at first, I whole-heatedly agreed... but after playing This Bed We Made, I fully disagree.
This is what a small studio mystery game should be. The soundtrack is crisp. The visuals have a style to them, as opposed to having that unity stock asset-look. The game doesn't wait for you to notice small things, and Sophie's voice lines help keep the player on the right track. The puzzles feel challenging, but not overwhelming. Just, ugh!
For a moment, I was sitting there, listening to one of the background songs, and I just thought to myself, "this is what modern Nancy Drew could be... if only." This Bed We Made feels like it was a mystery game made from a place of passion and love, while Nancy Drew: Mystery of the Seven Keys feels like a corporate coddling piece where someone on top asked themselves "okay, just how little can we scrape by with in order to turn a profit?"
ND34 tried, but I just feel like, underneath, you can still feel that the team behind it wasn't as passionate about it was in prior games. This Bed We Made has personality and identity; Nancy Drew: KEY feels like it isn't sure what it's supposed to be, so it defaulted to using its past as a crutch... but that didn't work, and now it really doesn't know what it's supposed to be. It's a shame for the ND-series, but now I'm excited to see what Lowbirth Studios puts out in the future... even if TBWM is only like... sixth months old. Maybe their future games can fill the Nancy Drew Adventure Series-sized whole in my heart.

I just saw people saying they were going to pirate the new game. Do not pirate Mystery of the Seven Keys. If you want more Nancy Drew games, then support HeR by buying the game they made. They are not a big company like Ubisoft or EA, which have millions and millions of dollars. They're a small indie company. I'm completely for sticking it to the greedy game companies that decide to steal from you because apparently buying is not owning, and they can take your shit without your permission, but small studios? Nope.

I think I audibly screamed when the release date for Nancy Drew: Mystery of the Seven Keys was unveiled. I’m so used to companies releasing teasers and trailers for products that’re at least months, if not over a year, away. I usually end up forgetting about them, so lately I’ve basically just reacted to that type of thing like “well, that’d be nice if it was coming out soon, but I’ll probably forget about it by then, so I don’t really care.”
And for Nancy Drew, specifically, we got to the end of the trailer, and I was like “oh well, I guess we’re not getting a release date. Guess I kinda expected to be strung along by HeR Interactive, so I’m not really surpri-”
And then the “releasing” appeared, and I literally just froze like “👁️ 👄 👁️ …no”
And then for it to be weeks, not months. W E E K S away. I screamed. I got up and left the room. I didn’t know how to take it. Yes the graphics are chopped, but I have a feeling this game is going to be what Midnight in Salem was intended to be, and the rumored dual gameplay systems is just, ugh; Chefs kiss. I’m so excited to, at the very least, give it a try.

THIS IS HUGE!!!!! Ever since the release of MID, fans were split on navigation, but now… YOU CAN CHOOSE! Yes! In a press release on Newswire, it was revealed that for the first time in a ND game, fans can choose the style of navigation. Thank you @tori_nd_piano for bringing this to our attention on our trailer stream from a couple days ago!!!! 🤯🤯🤯

This isn’t a spoiler, more like a general observation. I do think it’s weird that we don’t have multiple dialogue options anymore. Like Nancy used to be able to say a couple of things and get different reactions, so almost every play through felt different. I really miss that, the dialogue now feels more like a visual novel that you’re just clicking through
