Photographe et activiste visuel.le sud-africain.e, Zanele Muholi utilise son appareil photo pour dénoncer les injustices dont la communauté noire LGBTQIA+ (lesbienne, gay, bisexuel.le, transgenre, queer, intersexe, asexuel.le +) fait l’objet en Afrique. Jusqu’au 21 mai 2023, la Maison Européenne de la Photographie ellui consacre sa première rétrospective française. Les clichés présentées dynamitent avec force les idées reçues au premier rang desquels celui de l’homosexualité « non-africaine », croyance faisant de cette orientation sexuelle une importation coloniale. L’oppression des homosexuels se manifeste par une violence fondée sur le genre. Dans les townships d’Afrique du sud, des viols « correctifs » sont commis à l’encontre des personnes LGBTQIA+. Les photos heurtent et émeuvent. Muholi capture des gestes de tendresse, baumes apaisants sur les blessures des victimes de crimes de haine. Les visages sont graves et poignants. La douleur et la défiance affleurent sur les tirages. Muholi documente une histoire collective pour briser l’isolement de chacun. Iel bâtit un sanctuaire où les gens peuvent se connecter et guérir ensemble. L’apartheid est en arrière-plan du travail de Muholi. Ses représentations de la femme noire, accessoirisée avec des objets domestiques, prêteraient à sourire si elles ne dénonçaient pas l’intolérance, la discrimination et l’exploitation des femmes.      “When I was growing up in the 1970s and 1980s, many African countries were still fighting for their independence from European colonialism, and black nationalism was at an all-time high. While Mozambique, Angola, Zimbabwe and Namibia were slowly winning independence, South Africa’s fight for freedom against racialized oppression was quashed with brutal force by the apartheid state. 

     It is so unfortunate that, in most of those countries that gained independence before South Africa, homophobia, queerphobia, transphobia and lesbophobia are deeply entrenched, with African leaders criminalizing homosexuality and publicly projecting hate speech.

     As black lesbian women and gay men today we are resisting homophobia, queerphobia and transphobia simply by living our lives.
