Ruffled Feathers: How Feral Peacocks Divided a Small Town
The birds were beloved. But they also chased garbage trucks, scratched cars, and feasted on vegetable patches
It began with a peahen named Pearl. She was the only female in a trio of peafowl that once freely roamed the small town of Naramata, British Columbia. Her chicks had the bright-blue bodies and metallic-green tail feathers that make the male members of her species iconic, but Pearl’s colouring was rare: her entire body and tail feathers were a shimmering white.

Drink Red for Summer with Haywire Wines Pinot Noir and Merlot 2022
Drink Red for Summer with @HaywireWines #PinotNoir and #Merlot 2022 #bcwine #bcvqa @bcwine #okanagan #organic #vegan #winelover #sommelier
I’ve been talking about white and rosé wines lately, but we should not forget about enjoying red wines over the summary.  I have two Okanagan red wines from Haywire Wines to tell you about.  I received their Haywire Wines Pinot Noir 2022 and Haywire Wines Naramata Bench King Family Vineyard Merlot 2022 to review.  The grapes are organically grown and the wines are vegan-friendly. I am glad to see…

Tuesday 27th June 2023
As you might expect, there were no bears this morning despite the high expectations set by our host. Of course it's possible a whole sloth of bears might have shown up before the Cadby clan awoke but I somehow doubt it. So all the way to Naramata we were looking once again at the river banks wishing one to show itself and do a little jig.
What really seems wierd to us is the relaxed view about cannabis here. Its use for recreational and medical purposes was legalised in 2018. Not only that but each household is permitted to grow up to 4 plants of the stuff. Our host proudly showed me three plants he was cultivating behind his garage but assured us that it was for medical use only and he definitely didn't smoke or inhale it. Funny smell coming out of the garage door though.
The scenery on route to Naramata was stunning as gushing rivers thundered around almost vertical tree clad mountains; trees miraculously growing seemingly from the most miniscule amount of soil. Our first stop on leaving Hope this morning was the scene of a tragedy in 1965; the Hope Mud Slide. The landslide buried three vehicles and their occupants, and in all four people died under 47 million cubic metres of pulverized rock, mud and debris that fell down the 2,000-metre mountainside. The slide was possibly caused by an earthquake in the region. Even today there remains a huge open scar in the mountainside testiment to the events nearly 60 years ago. We then passed through Sunshine Valley which was the location for the Tashme internment camp for Japanese Canadians during WW2. It operated in one form or another between 1942 and 1949 with 350 dwelling shacks; one of the largest camps of its kind in Canada. By now, very depressed we stopped in Manning Park for a coffee which was served to us by a lad from Wales. As we sat in the grounds, a groundhog came up to us hoping for food.
We travelled 256km today and there are some homesteads in some extremely remote areas in Canada. One such place we stopped at was Hedley, a once thriving Gold Town that in its heyday produced in today's terms 3 billion dollars of pure gold. All those riches have gone now and sadly it barely survives despite the valiant efforts of a few. The town cemetery telling the story of its past life.
We reached Naramata late afternoon and found our apartment for the next three nights which overlooks the most spectacular Okanagan Lake, a massive 135 square miles in area and 84 miles in length! After a rather sketchy repast thrown together consisting of local beefburgers, locally grown veg and rice, washed down by Australian Pinot Grigio, what no SB (???), we have begun to plan our next couple of days here. We are right in the middle of the Canadian Wine producing area which does squeeze out a palatable SB I'm told. We feel a visit to a winery in person is the best way to confirm this.
ps I didn't know they made wine in Canada!

B.C. winemakers grapple with the climate crisis | The Narwhal
Rajen Toor’s 2023 harvest should have been an occasion to celebrate. Toor and his wife Bree, the duo behind wine label Ursa Major, had just purchased their own vineyard in the fall of 2022. For six years, Toor had been making his small-batch wines from grapes purchased from his family winery in Oliver, B.C., and, more recently, from a vineyard he and Bree leased on the Naramata Bench. Harvesting…

Wines of the year, 2023
Given the nature of my work and the fine wine folk I am so lucky to rub elbows with on the regular, I taste thousands of wines each year. These are the ones I remember most fondly: the way they opened the world, the way they centred experience, and all the kind souls that shared them with me.
I will remember 2023 as the year I really shed my ignorance and fell in love with Bordeaux and a year in which my partner and I continued our love affair with Jura Chards and Loire Chenins and entered into a new obsession with the great dessert wines of the world.
This list probably looks unhinged to the non-obsessed haha. Without having a social media outlet these last few years, it feels like some small gesture to the hardworking producers who crafted these works of art to be able to shout them out and thank them for their work. So here were the gems:

An Interview with Ben Bryant from 1 Mill Road
An #Interview with Ben Bryant from #1MillRoad #bcwine @winebcdotcom #naramatabench #okanaganwine #pinotnoir #somm
There is a constant growth in the number of new wineries in BC. One winery that I started to hear about this year is 1 Mill Road Winery, located on the Naramata Bench. They recently reached out to me for an interview. I was delighted to speak with Ben Bryant, co-owner and winemaker for 1 Mill Road. Below is my interview with Ben. I have not yet tasted their wines. A list of some science-backed benefits of wine
In this blog, we are going to talk about some of the most interesting and amazing science-backed benefits of wine. In this blog, we are going to see why opting for wine can be a fun thing to do. We are going to see how wine can be the most amazing thing for you not just because it satisfies your palate, but from a health perspective as well. And all these factors are practically science-backed. If you are looking for Kelowna wine tours, and if you are looking for Naramata wine tours, consider Sip and Anchor.
One of the most important benefits of opting to taste wine or opting for wine is that it enhances the number of antioxidants in the body. That means wine is a major contributor or supplier of antioxidants in the body which are extremely important for you to ensure that you do not have free radicals in the body. Antioxidants are extremely important because antioxidants can reduce the damage caused to cells in the body. That means the wine can actually prevent cellular damage. Of course, the catch is that it has to be consumed in moderation and not in excess (which otherwise can yield counter results). These cellular damages are typically caused by inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. All of these factors tend to create a kind of free radical movement in the body which is antithetical to your well-being of you.

Thursday 29th June 2023
The Riesling was not good but you did get a little bottle of rum with it. ??
The flat tyre indicator is on again so a visit to Mr Enterprise Rental's favourite tyre fixer is planned for first thing tomorrow in Penticton on route to the Heritage Railway further along Lake Okanagan. Today was earmarked for a return visit to the museum in Naramata and then a visit to the Naramata Waterfalls. Museum being inexplicably closed we bought something to eat tonight and a bottle of Chilean SB, 12 dollars.
Nobody mentioned at any time that a trip to the Waterfalls ought by rights contain a health warning. Nor did any notice state how far up the vertical perpendicular we might encounter a trickle of water. There was to be fair a notice regarding a lost cat, and a 1000$ reward. Answers to the name of Isla. We did call out but our solicitations returned void. Well we climbed and we climbed; the sound of running water ever present. Underfoot was a very unsuitable surface for a septagenarian. The pathway was a fine mix of gravel and scree which can become very unstable for someone at the far end of 'in their prime', albeit in suitable footwear, to maintain their balance at all times. There were moments on a severe downward slope when flailing arms and legs became somewhat uncoordinated and resembled Torvill and Dean on a very bad practice session. I found a fine stout staff to weald, the sort Moses might have been most happy to carry into the promised land, and that was very reassuring.
It was worth the effort to reach a point where the Falls could be inspected to their full advantage. Many a juvenile mountain goat would have passed into manhood by reaching as high as us I feel. The reverse journey was even more taxing and it was with some relief that we reappeared back in the car park all in one piece.
Since arriving in this area we have been intrigued by the local vineyards and have felt a growing kinship with the SB on offer, so on the way back from town we called in at the Serendipity Vineyard for a taste of the stuff. We magnanimously said whatever the cost we shall have a glass of the best SB of recent pressings. And very nice it was too. Full bodied NZ lookalike, bouquet of apples and honey. Beautiful it was sitting on the veranda looking out across the vines. 13$ a glass was a bit tough on the exchequer; the Chilean wine was less for an entire bottle!!! We thought about the option to buy a bottle to have with our evening repast. This SB would go down well with fresh fish, oysters, asparagus and Caesar salad, so the literature boasted. What have we got tonight? Pork sausages and crisps. Perhaps 50$ is a bit OTT for that.
Off to Salmon Arm tomorrow for two nights via the Heritage KVR and tyre emporium. We shall be really sorry to leave this place. It's a beautiful location, lovely town, great people and we have enjoyed every minute of it. I could live here.
ps. The Northern Pacific Rattlesnake is endemic to Canada BC; one of three deadly venomous snakes. We didn't encounter one today although I did see tracks. Today though was the turn of the Poison Ivy. Plenty of that.
pps. 28° today.

Naramata Bench's Aasha Winery
Aasha Wines Syrah, Chardonnay, and Rose I was so impressed with the bottles, the storytelling in the tasting notes and the gorgeously designed website of Aasha Wines that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on these mystical bottles. There are gorgeous illustrations on the labels, and they are sealed with wax to protect the corks. I know you can’t judge a book by its cover, nor a wine by its label,…
