Nastia
I can’t spell ok?
I have no idea why I draw nastiya with wires. But I do.
Quicksilver blood and wires to connect to the networks and machines.

Note
Do you have an art reference of Nastia? :D
I did do drawings in 2019 of how she looked in the past, but I fear I made her younger selves too attractive, so these designs are outdated.
Tumblr media
I definitely wanna update these designs. Make her teen self look more awkward, make her kid self closer in appearance to Nina. Her adult self also needs work, though I'm not exactly sure what to change...
My point is, I don't want Nastia to look TOO pretty. Pretty enough that she's Cortex's type, but not a supermodel, you know? I want her to look like she'd actually fit in perfectly with the Crash cast.

On this day, 9 September 1828, legendary author and Christian anarchist Leo Tolstoy was born in Tula province, Russia. Our T-Shirt of the Month for September 2022, made of 100% organic cotton by a worker-owned co-operative, and supporting grassroots labour unions in South Asia celebrates his life and work. Tolstoy's greatest work, War and Peace, contains an epilogue dotted throughout which functions as a key introduction to the concept of "people's history", which was highly influential for some of us at WCH. And it explains how history is not the story of "great men" but the overlapping stories of millions and billions of us: ordinary people. This month's design is by tattoo artist Nastia Jakovleva, who was born in Leningrad (today St. Petersburg) and lives in Berlin. She has placed the love of Andrei Nikolayevich and Natasha Rostova at the center of her drawing. Andrej and Natascha are two of the main protagonists from War and Peace. The drawing shows Andrei and Natasha at their first dance at the New Year's Eve ball in 1809. While the dancing couple and their love stands for peace, the background symbolizes the horrors of war. The epic quote "Everything I know, I know because of love" - also from the book - completes this extraordinary design. This t-shirt is available strictly limited edition for this month only. Be sure to preorder yours by September 30 as all t-shirts will be sewn and printed together. some ramblings about some of the matchups in the second round:
atp:
musetti v van assche: on paper, this should be a win for lorenzo, but knowing lorenzo it could very well not be. van assche has been playing really well lately and I think this could definitely be an upset. lorenzo has a really high ceiling but a really low floor too, so if he can just keep his level up (big if), he can win
de minaur v arnaldi: most consistent player against the least consistent player. with the crowd on his side added to that, alex will probably win. that being said, on any given day matteo could randomly start playing lights-out tennis so if this is one of those days, he’ll definitely give alex some trouble. I could see this one either being straight sets for alex or a five-setter that either of them win
fils v griekspoor: tallon barely survived his last match, but the fact that he came back from two sets down has to give him some insane confidence coming into this one. arthur has been on fire lately, but we haven’t really seen him in a lot of gritty, long bo5 matches. if he can come out swinging early and hold momentum for three sets, he can definitely win, but if it goes to four or five I think tallon could take it
dimitrov v kokkinakis: this thing is going to 5 sets. kokkinakis is known for his ridiculously long ao matches, and grigor is known for never having easy wins. grigor is definitely the better player here though, so as long as his body holds up he should win
paul v draper: jack has a massive chance of winning… if he’s fit. he just beat tommy in adelaide and in general his form has been looking pretty good lately. he did just like in a bin at the end of his round 1 match though, so that could possibly be a precursor to some health problems (or he unlocks whatever jannik did in beijing, and post-puke draper will win the ao). tommy paul made the semis last year and he can definitely also win this match. the best thing he can do is make it go as long as possible to tire jack out, but if jack is in-form then I think he’ll win in three or four sets
wta:
swiatek v collins: I would be shocked if Iga doesn’t win this match. that being said, danielle collins is no joke when she’s playing well. if she’s feeling it, she can definitely take a set off iga, but that’s probably all she’s gonna get
ostapenko v tomljanovic: the iconic beef is rehashed! I talked about this potential match a bit when I did my draw analysis and I don’t think my opinion has changed: this all depends on jelena’s level. if she plays the way she’s been playing for the past few weeks, then she’s gonna win. but if she does what she so often does and starts making tons of errors, ajla will take advantage. no matter what happens though this is probably going to 3 sets and it will definitely be dramatic
jabeur v andreeva: similar to iga’s match - I’ll be really surprised if ons loses but I won’t be surprised if mirra wins a set. she’s really, really talented. ons didn’t play any warmup tournaments, but she did have a great first round match so her level is definitely there. I do still think she’ll win, but mirra definitely won’t make it easy
badosa v pavlyuchenkova: of all the matches on this list, this is the one where I have the least confidence in guessing the outcome. they both looked really good in their first round matches, and they’re both in different stages of a comeback. I would maybe favor nastia if it goes to 3 sets just because we don’t know how paula's stamina is right now, but paula winning in 3 isn’t out of the realm of possibility either. I honestly don’t know who’s gonna win and I’m really excited to watch

Gymcastic and their Friends
I thought it was worth talking a bit about how the Gymcastic white wash of the show’s friends is a broader problem then UCLA and Miss Val but also extends to other people in the gymnastics community that have been “friends of the show” before.
For those unfamiliar, Gymcastic is an artistic gymnastics specific podcast that is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary this month having started up just afte the 2012 Olympic Games.  Originally it was a panel show format hosted by a law librarian named Jessica O’Beirne, over time panelists cycled in and out as is natural for a project lasting this long and today it is primarily Jessica, Spencer Barnes (who also runs the website The Balance Beam Situation) and occasionally contributions from a self taught MAG specialist Kensley Behel.  Jessica was laid off during the pandemic and has moved to making Gymcastic her full time job.  They travel to meets including the Worlds and Olympic Games where they get press credentials and at 2021 Worlds in Japan they made up more than half of all foreign press at the meet (if they call themselves press or journalists depends on if you are criticizing their journalistic standards).
Gymnastics is a small community where everyone knows each other, there are often professional conflicts of interests and have to be friendly with people in order to get information.  An example I’d give is that Tim Daggett owns a gym while being a commentator for NBC and he has several times had athletes on the floor of meets he was commentating.  Nastia Liukin, the other NBC expert commentator is the daughter of one of the most prominent coaches in the US and was commentating through when her father was running the US program and continues to commentate on his athletes with very obvious personal bias.
Gymcastic’s most famous missteps involve the former UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field when a number of her former athletes came forward with stories about her mistreatment of them during the #GymnastAlliance movement following the release of Athlete A.  Jessica’s husband (who works behind the scenes for the show) had co-written Miss Val’s book and Jessica had special access to the UCLA program (even acting as a guest judge at a pre-season exhebition one year).  She handled it badly essentially implying that the gymnasts speaking out against Miss Val were mistaken in their impressions of her.  Though she apologized for the incident the next week many didn’t find the apology sincere and she’s avoided addressing other Miss Val related issues by citing a conflict of interest.
Now I’d like to highlight two other issues that are pervasive in the show’s coverage.
1) Precision Choreography (and MyGymJudge).  Precision is a gymnastics consulting firm which provides choreography services, camps, and through a subdivision MyGymJudge provides judging critiques to gymnasts at all levels including elite.  The company is owned by Chellsie Memmel and Nicole Langevin (Langevin also hosts a podcast of her own interviewing gymnastics insiders which I also have opinions about but that’s for another time).  They have heavily sponsored Gymcastic over the years and despite the fact that the show likes to highlight conflicts of interest within USAG has never looked at the tentacles of Precision (which besides being owned by one of the US programs 3 high performance leads also employs one of the others).  They also have, at least to my memory, never given a note before interviews with Memmel or talking about her of her company’s support for the show.
I continue to believe that if Precision Choreography were being run by a figure less popular than Memmel it would draw a great deal of suspicion.  It’s not the most corrupt looking structure in American elite gymnastics on the surface but that’s only because the International Elite Committee exists.
2) The Fairy Tale of Greg Marsden and 1987 Worlds.  Greg Marsden is the now retired long time head coach of the University of Utah team.  Incredibly successful in the early years of college women’s gymnastics and a master at building up a fanbase around the school.  He is also opinionated and a bit of a drama queen and shit stirrer.  And Gymcastic loves him.
One of the stories they repeat quite frequently (and use to justify telling people that gymnastics in the 1980s was incredibly corrupt) is a story about how Greg Marsden was asked to coach the US women’s team at 1987 Worlds.  As Jessica tells the story he was invited to a party there where he saw judges and federation officials trading scores and was so disgusted with the corruption that he quit and didn’t want to have anything to do with elite gymnastics again.
Except that’s not what happened even by his own words in 1988 and the only other place besides Gymcastic that you will hear that version is the local Mormon press around the University of Utah.
Marsden quit the job at the US team for a number of bureaucratic and organizational reasons and on his way out the door told the LA Times in the spring of 1988 his version of this story.  He was approached in a bar by a Romanian coach (who denied the incident occurred) who proposed that they swap score assurances.  Score fixing in the 1980s is slightly complicated but essentially if your gymnast might et a 9.5 or a 9.7 the agreement would be to get the upper range of the plausible score.  Marsden says he got the other members of the US delegation to agree (who also denied this to the LA Times) but the scheme fell apart because the US gymnasts falls meant that they couldn’t be plausibly given the agreed upon scores.  They weren’t good enough to plausibly cheat.
Having investigated this in historical documents I suspect that the Romanian coach saw Marsden as a rube, knew the Americans couldn’t possibly get those scores in the first place and got a safety net for his own gymnasts without having to worry about returning the favor.  Not only do we have Marsden’s own words to the LA Times but there were other journalistic accounts of this from the time which conform to this version of events (including an amazing article from Rolling Stone).
But Marsden is someone who is portrayed as a friend of the show (they occasionally will ask him questions as if they know he’s in the listening audience and can email them later).  His marriage to one of his own gymnasts in the early 1980s is laughed off as being a product of it’s time (and he’s still married to her for the record).  He’ll also be framed in their narratives as an advocate for reform within the NCAA rules, even being given credit for the recent edition of vault lines as something he’s wanted for years, while also being described as skipping the rules meetings in the off season where these things are decided.
I can’t help but feel like in the cases of Miss Val, Memmel, and Marsden there is a certain amount of hero worship on the part of Jessica.  These were people who were huge figures in the sport when she was younger (and at least in Memmel’s case when she was a gymnastics coach briefly) and she is simply incapable of taking a step back and examining the mythology attached to these people.
But that’s what happens when you decide that feelings are more important than anything else.

what if... you told me all about your fansession (i would love to learn more about it)
no way the real moss guy in my inbox... heehe... im actually really excited to ramble about this!!! =D back when i first read hs i made many fan characters but i got an idea to make a fansession where, instead of the 12 zodiac signs it was the 22 major tarot cards..... and it kinda went from there!
because obviously 22 character session would be insane i at some point formed out 6 kids who were having The Session, and the rest of the characters were "npcs" made by sburb. but yknow, more humanlike than the carapacians, so kinda akin to the trolls. oh yea i changed some of the sburb worldbuilding for this, so i suppose its an alternate version of the game.... ;p also the session would take place around 2019.
okeeey anyways heres the players!
ester olsen (the star) is a knight of hope from sweden who's foolish and hyperactive but also very hopeful and loyal like a dog, she's internally a deviantart kid who draws exclusively on ms paint and sburb's quest for her is to become a typical hero. her land is a field with a country town inhabited by animal people.
her older brother emil (the chariot) is a rogue of breath who moves trough life very fast and always thrives to make progress by any means, and also takes care of ester... because hes awesome... his land is a giant sea of energy kind of similar to terezi's.
elio cassini (the sun) is the heir of light, he's just a really lucky boy who likes jrpgs and magic spells. he's anxious and keeps to the rules but well meaning; best friend of ester. he learns to accept the dark sides of the world instead of escaping from them. his land is an orange desert full of broken glass, ancient bones and mysteries.
elio's sister is nastia the maid of space (the empress)! she's kind of a snarky girl next door who likes art, gardening, fashion and baking but she struggles with persistence. her land is a field of giant flowers.. and frogs of course ;p
selene's the mage of void (the moon). (no surname i thought of for these two..... whoops....) she's the oldest one and also very lonely, although she isn't expressive she tends to cling to other people. she used to like weird and fascinating things, her land is a broken apart mountainous area flooded by dark water!
then selene's younger brother rasmus the prince of time (the emperor)! hes your average delinquent scriptie kid who tends to get into fights (usually with ester), but he's never completely malicious. his land is a fiery lava pool that's hard to navigate.
the goal is still to make the next universe via a frog, but theres no derse and prospit and instead dreaming just teleports your ghost self to a random location. there's still a fight between dark and light though, but this time it's the magician card (light) and the high priestess card (dark) who have their forces battling it out, which is pretty much everyone else, on a skaia stand in which is no longer a chessboard and now just a black and white planet. they're also the final bosses in place of king and queen, and they get stronger the session goes on so the party needs to act fast!!!
idk how to summarise the whole duration of the session to be honest because too much stuff gets involved.. but basically they do make it out in the end! (with some major character deaths though... hehh..)
well uhh this makes wayy more sense in my head lol, but i hope you like it! =D i have some drawings but i havent really made anything properly rendered that has all of them... also i would love to hear about your fansession!

I tried to redesign my concept for Nina's mother, Nastia Amberly, when she was a child. I wanted her to resemble Nina somewhat, but also be distinctly different from her in certain ways. For example, Nastia lacks the pronounced forehead and dark hair Nina got from Dr. Cortex.
The red hair was inspired by the very first concept design they had for Nina. The green eyes was inspired by Crash and Coco's green eyes, to represent her familial connection to them later in life. The leather jacket and boots are stereotypical bully garb. The spikes and skulls were included to make her seem extra-menacing.
I will try to draw her adult self later. To be honest, I think she's still a little too pretty, but then again, she's a love interest for young Cortex, so maybe it's okay. I really wanna draw a pic of her and young Cortex together...
