Finished up a rewatch of 3% recently. Joana was my favorite from the beginning and boy did I pick a winner.
Anyway I never see anybody talking about this show but if you like dystopian fiction at all, you should give it a try!

Both are smiling wide, Joana with her teeth showing, as they look ahead at something off-camera. /end ID]

Elisa, from District 11, was reaped at 16 for the 97th Hunger Games. She never cared for the Games, barely paid attention every year, and never wasted her envy on any winner. She has only ever wanted to live her life, and even this coudln't be allowed. The boy from her district, Otávio, revealed he loved her on the night of the interviews, and the public's emotional participation convinced the Game makers to allow for two winners. Apparently. Because as soon as they were the only two left, the one-winner rule was reinstated. Rather than killing her, Otávio tore away the bandaging that was preventing him from bleeding to death, and died in Elisa's arms. So tragic. So touching. No one ever questioned whether Elisa chose not to save him in order to go home. Guilt eats her.
Marco voluteered at 18 for the 98th Hunger Games, determined and certain to win, just as his mother had won 18 years earlier, and her father before her. And he won. And killed the girl from his district with his bare hands. And was crushed to his almost death under a rockslide and left permanently disabled. Little Mauricio, his 9-year-old son, can't wait to volunteer when his time comes. Marco loathes every day that brings him closer to that moment.
'Joana', born and raised in District 12, stepped forward in place of the girl that was reaped for the 99th Hunger Games and hadn't shown up. She accidentally killed the young son of Gerson, the Hob's most powerful mobster, so between dying in the arena or at the hands of those henchmen, at leats she would've gotten to eat as much as she wanted in the Capitol. She didn't expect to win. She didn't expect to want to. Her unfriendliness and too-long stares have protected her from the Capitol resident's lust so far. Murmurs of a rebellion have been brewing each year passing, and she's getting closer to finding a contact.
Gloria, from District 2, volunteered at 17 for the 100th Hunger Games, a Quarter Quell where only the children of past victors would be reaped. Her father died in the Games shortly before she was born, and her mother, daughter of a Peacekeeper, had been torturing her for her whole life with the mission to 'clean' her family's name. Her best friend Fernando volunteered right after her. He knew both the Capitol and his father were going to make him a poster tribute 'for not letting his disability stop him from pursuing glory for his district', but he only cared to be at his best friend's side. She made it just in time to hold his hand as he died. She bested all the victors' children, and didn't waste no smile on her victory. Some days, she can't remember what she voluteered for.
From District 4, Natalia volunteered at 14 for the 101st Hunger Games. She was part of the (secret) Rebellion led by District 13, and had been selected and trained to sabotage the Games from the inside. She failed, and won. No one from the Rebellion has been able or willing to contact her, and her only way to survive is to keep up the act. She hasn't let her guard down in years.
From District 7, Michele volunteered at 18 for the 102nd Hunger Games. Five years ago, she watched live her brother being killed by a trap set in the arena by the Head Gamemaker, Ezequiel, and she was determined to exploit the few seconds she would be in front of him to personally murder him. She was about to strike when she saw her brother among some wealthy Capitol élites. He didn't die. He joined the secret services of the Capitol in exchange for their riches. Ezequiel spared her, took her under his wing, and has been teaching her to walk the fine line between loyalties.
When he was 17, Rafael Moreira was reaped for the 105th Hunger Games, but it was Tiago who stepped forward in his place before he could react. Tiago knew his mother had always cared more for Rafael than him, and the chances of his name popping out at the next Reaping and the fraud being discovered were astronomically low. He didn't get more than a 'thank you' when he got home, but he knows of a Rebellion building connections even inside the Capitol, and for once he's feeling hopeful.
Xavier is from District 7. He's reaped at 12 for the 106th Hunger Games. He doesn't show any emotion at hearing his name being called, just the cold resignation of the last member alive of his family after they all perished in the Games. People run out of his way as he goes.
The district watch. The Capitol too. And the victors. And District 13. Connections are pulled, whispers in the hallways end with shaken hands, resolution settles in people who hadn't had light in their eyes in years. The scrawny, resigned boy is the talk of the country.
