FVD- Week 1
So, the journey at the National Institute of Design has begun. The first two weeks of Introduction to Design was surreal. It was filled with designers from various disciplines each of them with their own story.
Then the Fundamentals of Visual Design module started which I was honestly scared about after I came across some stories on Instagram of a few M.Des students from the Bangalore campus but once the started, it was amazingly entertaining and inspiring. Between Suman Da’s and Shekhar’s live demos, stories and jokes from Saurabh and Kuntal and some soul soothing bengali folk music from Basuki Da, I was glued to my screen the entire time.
I either had an awestruck fanboy face or a grinning face like an idiot which somehow made my parents think that I might be watching some standup comedy video during my class timings. Thank you for making the sessions engaging.
Now, I could not just sit there and do nothing and so I jumped on the bandwagon.
Ok this might be confusing. It is just warmup. Straight lines, curved lines, squiggles, triangles, squares, rectangles and what not. The image above is just one of many more and I promise you they look much cleaner than this one. This one might just be a result of my laziness. Now, I have started using discarded newspapers just to not waste paper. Smart, huh!
Moved on to some observational simple pencil sketches on paper of my surroundings.
With a few more details and some new challenges
Then, I moved on to some nature sketching. It was very relaxing I must say!
The final sketch of the potted plant. The image has come out bad somehow!
Well, now with a few hand drawn sketches, I wanted to explore some other mediums. Like:
Brush and fountain pen ink on paper. My trusty old lamp.
A tree with ball pen. It’s just squiggles I guess. Super fun to do!!
And then after sometime, I got bored and wanted to try some human anatomy as well. I must warn you, they are very very rough.
The old guy was someone in my neighbourhood doing yoga in the morning.
Ok, I need to stop stalking people in the morning when they are exercising.
Some random concept character. This is WIP by the way.
Still working on this sketch. I will be rendering this with coffee probably.
One more bonus. This is a character from a Satyajit Ray book known as the adventures of Prof. Shonku. This inspiration came to me when I saw Shekhar talking on the screen. Shekhar, this is for you.
Shekhar Bhattacharya as the legendary Prof. Shonku
Alvida, Adios, Tata, Bye Bye, Hasta la Vista and Sayonara till next time.

The artwork in KESAR AND THE LULLABY BIRDS is a special collaboration between illustrator @debasmitadasgupta and author @theorangepaisley. Embedded in the fabric and decor are carefully researched motifs and traditional craftwork Scroll to see a sneak peek👉🏽 ・・・ From Aditi: Folk art in India ranges from creating paintings, pottery, mudwork, weaving, embroidery, beading, metalwork, leatherwork and so much more! If given a choice, I would like to spend my time traveling across India visiting the homes and workshops of different folk artisans, observe them work, see their art materials, listen to their stories, learn their craft and have chai with them. The extensive research process behind Kesar and the Lullaby Birds, gave me this opportunity in its own special way. I got to learn about the history, practice and cultural significance of several folk art elements. The few research papers that I referenced were written by the students and professors of NID. I’m very grateful that they have put such in-depth material online. #kesarandthelullabybirds #kesardiaries #bookresearch #nationalinstituteofdesign #diversechildrensbooks #picturebooks #diversechildrensliterature #illustratorsoninstagram #handdrawnillustrations #authorsofinstagram #folkart #folkartofindia #folkartofgujarat #kutchhandicrafts #kutchiwork #embroidery #ahirembroidery #kutchembroidery #handembroidery #rannofkutch #kutch #gujarat #india #sisters #siblinglove #indiansiblings #bigsister #bigsisterlittlesister #bigsisterlove (at Great Rann of Kutch) https://www.instagram.com/p/CY9ZvoSLamw/?utm_medium=tumblr
