The Lincoln Memorial located on the westernmost part of the national mall with the World War II memorial in the foreground. Henry Bacon was the architect of this building which is the form of a Greek Doric Temple as a memorial for the 16th President Abraham Lincoln, the great emancipator who led this nation through its bloodiest conflict the Civil War. Bacon’s design was broken into two parts, a sub-foundation and an upper foundation when ground was broken on February 12, 1914. The memorial was constructed on ground that was drained and land-filled, so the sub-foundation consists of 122 poured concrete solid rods that are anchored in the bedrock. Poured concrete anchors connect the rods and the beautiful marble floors actually cover the arches creating as incredibly sound platform to stand up the massive building and equally massive statue of Lincoln within its confines. The landscaping and stairs around its base carefully disguise the massive subfloor. World War I slowed the construction work but it never completely stopped and in 1922 on May 30th, the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated. - [ ] #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america @apple #iphone13pro #omsystem @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot @visitwashingtondc @nationalparkservice @nationalmallnps (at World War II Memorial) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cljd_CcSqgd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Korean War Veterans Memorial was dedicated on July 27, 1995, the 42nd anniversary of the armistice that ended the war, by President Bill Clinton and Kim Young Sam, President of the Republic of Korea, to the men and women who served during the conflict. Within the walled triangle are 19 stainless steel statues designed by Frank Gaylord, each larger than life-size, between 7 feet 3 inches and 7 feet 6 inches tall; each weighs nearly 1,000 pounds. The figures represent a platoon on patrol, drawn from branches of the armed forces; fourteen of the figures are from the U.S. Army, three are from the Marine Corps, one is a Navy Corpsman, and one is an Air Force Forward Air Observer. They are dressed in full combat gear, dispersed among strips of granite and juniper bushes which represent the rugged terrain of Korea.⠀ ⠀ 📍: Korean War Veterans Memorial⠀ 📅 : February 2019⠀ ⠀ #nationalparkgeek #IBrakeForBrownSigns #getolympus⠀ #nationalmallnps (at Washington DC Memorial Mall) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtYa1IbA898/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=hdkfra47jxmb

"Out of a mountain of despair, a stone of hope." Today we observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later. This is the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C., which opened to the public on August 22, 2011, after more than two decades of planning, fund-raising and construction. The Memorial is administered by the @NationalParkService and is part of National Mall and Memorial Parks (nationalmallnps). #washingtondchistory #washingtondc #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #history #travelblog #travelblogger #blogger #blog #ushistory #americanhistory #ipulledoverforthis #explorewashingtondc #explore #goparks #visitdc #nationalmall #FindYourPark #myDCcool #nationalparkgeek #nationalparkservice #nps103 #martinlutherkingmemorial #mlkday #memorial #nationalmallnps #archi_ologie #sculpture (at Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7kA7Pnn1qR/?igshid=1r8peeq4mm61p

#REPOST @nationalparkservice with @get__repost__app The tradition of the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse began with President Calvin Coolidge nearly 100 years ago when he lit a 48 foot Balsam Fir from Vermont decorated with 2,500 electric bulbs in red, white, and green on Christmas Eve 1923. If you're visiting the @nationalmallnps this month, don't forget to step across the street to @presidents_park_nps (White House) and see the National Christmas Tree on the White House Ellipse. The National Christmas Tree site is free to visit and open to the public through Jan. 1, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Friday-Saturday. The walkway surrounding the National Christmas Tree features 58 state and territory trees decorated with ornaments designed by students that are unique to each tree. The elegant classic stone Egyptian styled obelisk that honors George Washington, who served as the victorious commander in chief the Continental Army of the American Revolutionary War, president of the Constitutional Convention, this nation’s first President, founding father and visionary who carefully chose the site the fledgling nation’s capital at what today is Washington DC towering at 555 feet, beautifully lit at night in the center of the National Mall in Washington DC in the image. When it was completed in 1884, it was the tallest man-made structure in the world. In 2011, a 5.8 earthquake occurred 84 miles southwest of DC in Virginia that cracked the monument, causing injuries although minor to visiting occupants within it, I felt the quake at my desk at work in Lyndhurst New Jersey. It was closed as a results of 150 cracks with the heaviest damage to the pyramidion or top of the monument. It reopened in 2014, I do have images in my image archives I’ll have to dig up of the monument clad in scaffolding to post. - [ ] #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #omsystem @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot @nationalparkservice @nationalmallnps @visitwashingtondc (at Washington Monument, Washington D.C) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck1OhQYPJb_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

COVID-19 Memorial ceremony before Inauguration #Inauguration2021 #WashingtonDC
Yesterday January 19th, one of the most important pre-inauguration activities took place at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington with which President-elect Joe Biden, Incoming First Lady Jill Biden, Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris and Incoming Second-Gentleman Doug Emhoff took part.

The ceremony to remember the lost victims of COVID-19 was a solemn ceremony where various people gave eulogies and we heard the beautiful song Amazing Grace by Lori Marie Key a nurse from Michigan and also Grammy winning Gospel singer Yolanda Adams beautifully singing Halleluyah.
In his speech, according to WYFF4 Joe Biden said "To heal, we must remember. And it's hard sometimes to remember, But that's how we heal. It's important to do that as a nation." With Vice President-elect Kamala added: "For many months we have grieved by ourselves. Tonight, we grieve and begin healing together."

With the USA reaching and biting it's own record and the World's number of death related to COVID-19 earlier in the day which is sadly 400,000, the National Mall NPS was decorated with candles with represented every 1000 lives lost and 200,000 flags representing those of died and from different countries which represented the number of people who would have attended Today's Inauguration but will now be virtual due to the current pandemic.
WATCH: Nearly 200K flags are flying at the @NationalMallNPS "representing people from around the world who would gather for the #Inauguration... The #FieldofFlags is illuminated by 56 pillars of light representing America’s states & territories." pic.twitter.com/A8wJNIRURt

Look Details:
Although last night's event was all about the ceremony taking place, I could help but notice what both VP-elect Kamala Harris and incoming First Lady Jill Biden where both wearing. Both ladies wore designers who played a role during this pandemic to mark the day
Thanks to Vanessa Friedman, Kamala wore a camel coat from New York-based and Haitian born Kerby Jean Raymond's Pyer Moss. During this pandemic Pyer Moss has made PPE and masks for frontline worker in the NYC area.
Whilst incoming First Lady Jill Biden wore a beautiful coat and dress by Jonathan Cohen made from recycle masks. She wore Jonathan Cohen's Unity Wrap Coat and Unity Paneled Dress which are currently up for pre-order. Special thanks to Susan from What Kamala Wore.
See you in a few hours, where I will be live tweeting the Inauguration.
