I’ve seen a lot of discussion about Travis being missing from Nat’s death scene. I think it was on purpose. We feel it. I certainly felt it, everytime they jumped angles I thought he would be the next person.

But he couldn’t be there, because we know they promised each other not to end it. Travis would never beckon Nat to death because he wants her to live. If the wilderness is really magic it knows that. If it’s just Nat’s mind she knows that.

This scene is the reverse of the one where we saw him talking to her after she overdosed and begging her to stay alive.

i’m interested in seeing where nat’s tendency to withhold information or straight up lie to try to keep the peace and to spare feelings (travis’s especially) will go as they all get worse next season! in the first season, withholding the information that one of the people she slept with was travis’s bully was you know, a very normal teenage sort of problem and a very teenage sort of solution. she didn’t necessarily owe travis that information, but considering that she presented it as YUP HERE ARE THE PEOPLE I WAS WITH and did not include. the guy she knew he’d be upset about. i understand his emotional cocktail there.

nata’s reasoning, of course, was that he’s not going to find out if i don’t tell him (ha. ha. ha) and it’s better to keep that from him cause he’ll freak out and it’ll be ugly for everyone involved and it’s not going to help anyone at all. but then, surprise surprise, the truth comes out the way that it tends to.

and then when season 2 rolls around and it becomes “is my brother dead? do i need to stop desperately searching for him?” that is... very much not a normal teenage problem. from a practical standpoint, natalie’s desire for travis to give up on it and start mourning and go back to helping her hunt and keeping them all alive is a reasonable thing to want. nat’s assumption that javi couldn’t still be alive made sense in the context of A World With Logic and Rules, and assuming that she WAS right, travis running himself ragged on a wild goose hunt that made it so he wasn’t helping her with the real hunts that kept everyone alive... was not great, either for the group or for travis as a person.

honestly, if they lived in A World With Logic and Rules, there probably would never have been consequences for nat faking javi’s death. it would have been successful! travis never would have found out about the lie and javi would continue being a corpse in a hole miles away from the cabin that just didn’t happen to leave that bloody pair of shorts. because in that world that makes sense... javi would have been dead by that point. logically speaking, the chances of a thirteen year old boy with no winter wear surviving on his own in the canadian winter for 2+ months was not something that was going to happen and travis holding onto that delusion and using up his energy on that was not helpful to him or others.

but they don’t live in that world, javi WAS alive, and nat’s deception was laid bare. and it leaves me wondering what that tendency of hers might end up looking like in the wilderness scenes going forward, faced with a world she now accepts doesn’t work by the logic she’s used to
