Femicide is a worldwide problem
Tumblr media
Feminists and human rights campaigners have long criticised the use of the term “honour killing” to describe the homicides of women perpetrated by men purportedly for bringing shame upon or dishonouring their families.
The term is mainly used in the context of traditional, patriarchal religious communities from non-white, non-Western countries. However, there are problems with both the terminology and the description of such crimes.
There is never any “honour” in murder, and many of these homicides take place in secular, white Western contexts and communities. Yet, it is clear that such killings are viewed and labelled differently depending on the perpetrators.
When white Western men kill women, they often claim they did so due to provocation or jealousy. When men in Asia or the Middle East commit such crimes, it is said to be about maintaining the “honour” of the killer’s family and community.
The United Nations estimates that about 5,000 women are killed each year in honour-related crimes. Most of the victims included in this statistic are from Asia and the Middle East.
Yet, a closer look reveals that many murders – often in the West – that are categorized as other types of homicide also fit this label. That’s partly why many feminist groups campaigning on this issue think the actual number is much higher — closer to 20,000 worldwide. Another factor is the hidden nature of some of these murders, which can be dismissed as suicides or disappearances.
As I’ve written previously, patriarchs everywhere often treat the women and girls who die this way as culpable: They were slaughtered, according to this logic, because they failed to be subservient and obedient.
Nothing speaks of this stigma more than an unmarked section of a cemetery in Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, in which several victims of patriarchal murders are buried. I met Naza, whose daughter is buried there. She visits in secret because her daughter’s death has been shrouded in shame.
In 1990, I co-founded the UK-based feminist law reform organisation Justice for Women to campaign for fair and equal treatment of women going through the criminal justice system, either as victims or defendants in cases involving male violence.
In the UK, a woman dies every three days at the hands of a former or current male partner. European Union data show that in 2020, there were 400 femicides in Poland, 117 in Germany, 102 in Italy and 99 in Hungary. The law largely treats these men more leniently than it does the women who fight back to save their lives.
Doing this work, it soon became apparent to me that the motives men give to police and courts when they carry out deadly violence in these circumstances are similar to those we hear about in ‘honour killings’.
Very recently in Britain, for instance, men who killed their female partners often used the defence of provocation, which, if successful, reduced a murder charge to manslaughter. They would say that the victim had dishonoured them, either by humiliating them, forming new relationships or by questioning their manliness. In 2008, this defence was removed from the statute book after a persistent campaign by feminists.
I recall the case in 1991 of Joseph McGrail who kicked his common-law wife, Marion Kennedy, to death. They had been together for 10 years, and Kennedy was addicted to sleeping pills and alcohol, partly due to living with the stress of threats and abuse from McGrail. His reason for the crime was that he had come home to find her drunk again. The judge, Oliver Popplewell, said, “That woman would have tried the patience of a saint,” before sentencing McGrail to a two-year suspended jail term.
A decade later, Les Humes, a lawyer living in the north of England, was sentenced to seven years for manslaughter for killing his wife, Elizabeth Davies, when he discovered that she was having an affair and had planned to leave him. Humes stabbed Davies so ferociously that in some places the knife had passed through her body. Davies, a secretary at his law firm, was 36 when she died and had been married to Humes for 15 years. The couple had four children.
Provocation was mainly used as a defence when men could persuade the court that their honour had been besmirched: for example, if a man found his wife in bed with another man or if she nagged him to take out the rubbish. That men pleading provocation would often have the sympathy of the court suggests that “dishonouring” a man and causing him humiliation was considered worse by judges and juries than him terrorising a woman through sexual and domestic violence and murder.
This attitude is rooted in the age-old notion that married women are chattel. Indeed, the provocation defence in the UK can be traced back to at least the 17th century. Until 1981, men who killed their partners could get more lenient sentences in Italy if the woman had “dishonoured” the family with infidelity.
Yet, even with provocation no longer a legal defence in the UK, men who kill their female partners often walk free while women who kill men in self-defence are being convicted of murder, research published last year by the UK-based Centre for Women’s Justice found.
One example is the case of Dawn Rhodes, who was killed in 2016 by her estranged husband, Robert, to whom she had been married for almost 20 years. Robert had discovered Dawn was having an affair with a colleague. Dawn in turn had found out that Robert too was in another relationship.
She was killed when her throat was so deeply cut that she was partially decapitated. Robert said he acted in self-defence. Forensic experts told the jury that it was more plausible that Dawn’s injury had been inflicted from behind as opposed to a frontal attack. Still, the jury found Robert not guilty of murder.
To be sure, despite similarities between such killings across contexts and continents, there are also differences. But the focus should be on femicide, the very act of a man killing a woman or girl.
This form of deadly male violence cuts across every single country and culture on the planet. It cannot be acceptable anywhere.

On March 27th 1923, Sir James Dewar, the inventor of the vacuum flask, died.
James Dewar held early appointments at the University of Edinburgh, in 1875 he became Jacksonian professor at the University of Cambridge, and at the age of just 34 was appointed Fullerian professor at the Royal Institution (RI). From all accounts, his experimental prowess rivalled that of Michael Faraday but is only really known nowadays as the inventor of the vacuum flask, or thermos as it became known.
Dewar is said to have been a "ruthless" chemist, we here a lot about scientist who deal in this theory or that theory, this was not Dewar, he dealt in facts, and didn't suffer fools, I wont pretend to know the meaning of his work and admit to copying about how his early work concerned organic chemistry (suggesting a possible structure for benzene, still called ‘Dewar benzene’), atomic spectroscopy and other topics. Cryogenics research was his main focus at the Royal Institute, particularly important was his invention of the Dewar silvered vacuum flask and the liquefaction of gases culminating with that of hydrogen in 1898.
Dewar was variously described as ‘an incarnate devil’ and ‘of quarrelsome disposition and ungovernable temper’, to me that just sounds like any other Scotsman you will meet in a pub! I think from what I can fathom he rubbed people up the wrong way, and it is quite evident that the contemporary scientists that he work with in the UK didn't like him, his work was more appreciated by those who knew him from afar, the ones that didn't have to rub shoulders with him, the evidence of this you can find in the number of Nobel prizes he was nominated for, nine in total, although he won none it is still an impressive number, oh and none of these nominations came from fellow Brits, says it all, don't you think?
Apart from the flask, Dewars other main contribution to science was the discovery of cordite, made in conjunction with Sir Frederick Abel. What he lacked in charm with his colleagues he is said to have exuded it in his lectures and presentations. The following excerpt is from a 1911 article about the man.......
"Sir James Dewar's delivery in public is most excellent, and a certain charm is added to his well-modulated voice by a touch of the Scotch accent which he still retains. The preparation of his lectures and reports shows great care and precise method. Indeed, were it not for this, and his propensity for a happy co-ordination of facts, figures, and deductions, the forceful, logical, convincing presentation with which he always appears to impress his hearers, would be impossible. As can be easily realized, it is not an easy task, when treating of the very abstruse subjects he has dealt with, to adapt to the comprehension of the masses the results of explorations made in hitherto unknown paths such as we have called to attention.
His success has been so marked, so extraordinary, of such benefit to mankind, that we must all wish many more days may be spared him to enhance, as he surely will, the admirable work he has already accomplished, leading him to disclose many more of the valuable secrets that Nature guards so jealously."
He died in London on this day 1923.

She’s The Lady Of Our House
Tumblr media
Word Count: 3,550 words. A short one for me. To be honest, I think I’m a lil rusty at the moment. Notes: ~ Title from - “Mother Like Mine” by The Band Perry. ~ Female OC, but y’all know that. ~ I think this is written a little differently to how I’d normally write, it’s almost in the same veins as Once, Twice, Three Times... but not quite. ~ I couldn’t really be bothered to look up if the dates I mentioned actually co-incided with actual tour dates, so play along with me. Ohsnap, she finished something! Well, Mother’s Day in the UK is on March 19th, and Shelly is technically British so, why not? I didn’t get the chance to write something for International Women’s Day for her, and she recently told me the name of her third (!!!) baby so I figured, eh, let’s see where it goes. And I know I technically missed it! Only just! (But it’s not the 20th until I go to bed so? 🤷🏼) Title and image inspired by the fact that she’s always been Gerard’s heart, and while Frank may be the beating heart of the band, Shelly’s been the heart of the band-family. I think they’d be just as protective of her as she is of them. Anyhow! On we go.
~~~ The first time Shelly received something for Mother’s Day, was, surprisingly, not when she was actually a mother. She didn’t qualify for the ‘holiday’ in the slightest. Nor was it at the time of year she was used to. Growing up in the United Kingdom, Shelly always celebrated Mother’s Day in March, ish. She celebrated both for her mama and her grandmother, although she would focus more on her own mother, naturally. That was perfectly normal for her. So when she started working for My Chemical Romance, she had to start adjusting her personal timelines because not everything matched up on either side of the pond. Mother’s Day, in America, tends to fall in May, for example. She was pretty glad that she was so organised, that she had her planner. If she didn’t write things like that down, then she’d forget. Although she would probably never be as forgetful as the four ‘boys’ she considered her charges. Then again, she wasn’t entirely sure that they knew what day of the week it was most of the time, and that was okay. That was her job. They were very good at just following her directions; all trusting her to get them to the next destination on time and in one piece. She hadn’t let them down so far. Shelly had managed to arrange some time for each of the boys to call their mothers on the day in question, had managed to schedule enough time in one location so they could all do it in one fell swoop. After each call, she was called in with the son/s in question to be gently questioned in front of them; the usual is he behaving, is he treating you nicely, sort of deal. And then she was genuinely thanked for arranging the time for the guys to call home. “Not a problem ma’am,” she said with a smile. “A boy’s gotta respect his mama.” Once the last call had been made, the guys waited until Shelly was settled down and absorbed in a little paperwork again. Then, one by one, they wandered past her table and dropped little gifts on it for her - just little things they found at the gas stations during rest stops, but it was the thought that counted. The first item was put on the table near her and she blinked rapidly, not taking her eyes off of the paperwork she was almost hunched over. Then the second, which made her glance over at the items, focusing more on them and not at whoever was walking by as the third was put down. She frowned, the fourth was put down and the footsteps scurried away as she sat up a little. Shelly focused her attention on the little pile of items on the table instead of the boys down the other end of the bus. Curiously, she reached out and pulled the items closer - a couple of larger packets of her favourite candy, a little cat keychain, a single pink rose and, finally, a small (pocket sized really) stuffed bear she vaguely remembered looking at. “Boys,” she said quietly before looking up to see them gathered together, watching her as she looked over the gifts. “What… What’s this?” They exchanged looks before Ray spoke first. “It was Frank’s idea, actually.” Shelly tilted her head, glancing at the shorter guitarist, who was looking… A little embarrassed actually. “Frankie?” He hummed and cleared his throat a little, glancing at the brothers before looking back at her. “Well,” he said quietly. “Gerard said -” “Hey!” He frowned at Frank, wondering where this was going. “- When we interviewed you, that your job was almost like that of a glorified babysitter, and you agreed.” She grinned. “I made a similar comment to Andrea, actually, so he’s not wrong.” Gerard relaxed a little, his eyes focusing on her hands as she rubbed the small bear’s ears with her thumb. “And with the way you look after us, making sure we’re presentable, that we’re on time, that I don’t get as sick as often as I could…” Frank rubbed the back of his neck. “It’s almost like you’re the band mom,” Mikey finished quietly. Shelly blinked rapidly for a moment. “Which isn’t a bad thing!” Frank added quickly. “We call Ray ‘band dad’ sometimes,” Gerard said with a grin. “But a mom always does it better,” Ray finished. The blonde glanced back down at the small gifts, staying quiet for a moment. The guys glanced at each other before Frank cleared his throat. “We’re just tryin’ to say that we appreciate you and how you take care of us.” “We’re not trying to be weird,” Mikey shook his head. “Though we guess that it could come off that way.” Shelly didn’t say anything. Instead she just pushed herself to her feet and made her way down to their end of the bus. Frank was the closest, so he got a hug first; her arms around his neck taking him by surprise. He recovered quickly and hugged her back before she reached out and pulled the other three towards her as well, ending up in the middle of a band hug. “For goodness sake,” she mumbled, making sure each boy had a little ‘squeezy hug’ time while staying in the middle. “You didn’t have to do that at all.” “We’re sorry it’s not much -” Ray started, shutting up quickly when she shot him a look. “Don’t even start with that,” she said. “It’s the thought that counts, the fact that you even bothered in the first place.” “That means we did okay then?” Gerard asked quietly. “Oh darlings! Yes, of course!” Shelly then squeaked as they squeezed her in another band hug. “You didn’t have to though, but thank you, I really do appreciate it.” “We appreciate you,” Frank mumbled from near her shoulder, squeezing her a bit tighter, almost like he was trying to say, ‘especially me’ - she did a lot to protect his health after all. “And I appreciate you all being so good for me,” she said as they started to let her go. Gerard swallowed quietly at those words as they all retreated to go and sit back down. “I’ve heard stories about those like me, who’s… Er, bosses? Charges? Whatever,” Shelly waved it off, settling back at her table. “They make it really difficult for their version of me to do their job, or make it really awkward or uncomfortable.” “Why would you do that to someone who’s just trying to help you?” Mikey asked with a wrinkle of his nose. Shelly shrugged. “Some people get off on the power dynamic I guess?” Ray and Mikey pulled the exact same face and she giggled. The noise made Gerard smile down at his sketchbook. He didn’t see Frank watching him before the short guitarist went to sit opposite Shelly. She smiled at him as he sat down, and he watched her attach the cat keychain to her pencil case. “Looking after you boys is like looking after a herd of kittens,” she said quietly, a smile on her face as she finished twisting the keyring onto the zipper. “You were a little cautious until you were coaxed out from under the sofa. Now I’m chasing you around, rescuing you from situations and trying to keep you in one place.” This comparison seemed to amuse Frank because he laughed and Gerard looked up at the noise, glancing over to Shelly soon after. She had moved the rose and bags of candy closer to her and was sort of… Petting the small bear again, rubbing one of its ears between her thumb and forefinger. “I’m sure we’ve been compared to worse behind our backs,” Mikey said. “People best not do that in front of me, I’m not gonna stand for that.” “Mama bear’s protective,” Frank grinned at her, getting a small smile and a giggle back. “I’m more of a lion than a bear,” she tucked her hair behind her ear. “I’m a Leo after all.” “And you did just call us a herd of cats,” Gerard added. “So that seems to track.” Frank looked from Shelly to Gerard, and then back to Shelly again, tilting his head as he looked at her. “I can see that.” “See what?” “The Leoness,” Frank said. “You take pride in your hair, your mane. And you always seem to do your make-up in that cat’s eye fashion, even if it looks softer on you.” Shelly looked briefly amused. “That’s true. I think it suits my features better.” “So, not mama bear,” Frank moved so Gerard could take the window seat next to him. “But mama cat?” “Mama lion,” Gerard mumbled, a little shyly as he settled. “Technically.” “Like I said,” Shelly looked over some of her paperwork. “People best not say bad stuff about my boys in front of me. I’m not afraid to get my claws out.” Frank made a friendly, flirty growling noise which made Gerard roll his eyes. “Oooh, feisty mama!” The other three guys groaned and Shelly blushed. However, when Gerard looked over his sketchbook, she had a tiny little smile on her face, so she couldn't have been that mad. “Right,” she said. “Moving on! Let’s go over what’s happening next, shall we?” ~#~ This became a tradition - Shelly would remind them about their mothers, and they’d remember her on the day as well. She didn’t remind them because they’d remember her - if anything, she never expected anything. She was pleasantly surprised when they remembered the year after, although she sighed softly at them and shook her head, moving to stand up. “Darlings, I’m not your mama, you don’t need to -” “Band mom,” Ray said before she even finished her sentence, being the first in line to hug her and give her the small gift. “How many times do we need to tell you that?” Mikey hugged her tightly before he gently put his gift on the table next to her. “Although,” Frank was next, waiting until he’d had his hug before he continued. “If you want me to call you mommy…” “Frank!” The joint chorus made him laugh and he scampered away, dodging the others as he did so. Shelly rolled her eyes and shook her head, though neither of those actions did anything to soften the blush on her face. “One day Frankie,” she said after a minute. “I’m going to call your bluff on something like that.” Frank clicked his tongue at her and shot her finger guns. “I can’t wait.” Gerard sighed from in front of her and shook his head, putting his own gift with the other three before turning to her. She smiled at him, held her arms out and made little grabbing motions with her hands. He didn’t need to be told or asked twice - he wrapped his arms tightly around her and leant his chin on her shoulder. “Gimme gimme,” she murmured quietly enough so only he could hear her. “I like your hugs Gee.” He hummed happily and replied just as softly. “I like yours.” Shelly squeezed him just a little tighter before letting him go and stepping back so she could sit down again. They didn’t always buy her gas station gifts - but they always got her something, and it was always something small. It had to be, otherwise she’d scold them, they all knew that. But she didn’t mind - as she said the first year, it was the thought, the effort, the inclusion, that mattered to her. She was always happy with the little things they chose - she started to develop a little collection of interesting trinkets. She always made a little note of who got her what (not that they’d ever know about that because she kept that to herself) - and not just for this one occasion. When they found out her birthday and started remembering that, she made notes for that too. When they came back ‘to her’ after going home to see their families the first Christmas she worked with them, they returned with little trinkets for her then too. (Although for Christmas, she was guilty of having things for them when they came back; baked treats and little useful things mostly, but they were very appreciative.) They never forgot her birthday, or her at Christmas, or (American) Mother’s Day - but that first one was special to her; she held onto the keychain, the bear and the rose petals that she later on pressed and preserved. She was sentimental, sue her. All three items would later go on to live on a display shelf in her future family home - right in between two photographs; a more casual one of her and the boys not long after they’d finished recording Revenge, and the other was one of them attending their first awards show with her by their side; one of the first times she’d dressed up a little more for them. Not enough to stand out, the show wasn’t about her, it was about them, after all, but she put more effort in because of how proud of them she was. ~#~ The first time Shelly qualified to celebrate the day, she wasn’t even sure that it really counted. Maybe it was more of a technicality. Mother’s Day, in America at least, fell in the first few days of April that year, the 3rd, specifically. Her boys would celebrate her the day after - because they refused to not do something for her; and she had long since insisted that the actual day belong to actual mothers. Well. That year, she was, technically, an actual mother, if the pregnancy tests she’d been taking - at least one a week for about three weeks; if they were to be believed. The tour they’d been on had been so busy, so hectic, she’d hardly had time to think about the results, let alone think about telling her husband. So, she reminded the guys to call their mothers, and/or the mothers of their children on the day itself. The day after, she didn’t get much of a choice in regards to them celebrating their ‘band mama’ - her. She always pretended to be a little cross with them when they did more than she expected - which was almost every year. Shelly glanced across the table at her husband as Frank wrapped his arm around her shoulders to pull her against him, kissing the top of her head. She watched Gerard scowl playfully at Frank, which made the guitarist laugh. “That’s my wife,” Gerard grumbled. “And my exception,” Frank said with a grin, which just got bigger when Shelly shifted in her spot, which moved her closer to him. “Now now,” Mikey said from next to Gerard. “Put my sister in law down, you dog.” “I would never take you away from your babies Frankie,” Shelly shifted away from him and closer to Gerard, who wrapped his arm around her as soon as she got close enough. “Wouldn’t want to leave them without their dad.” “Because you’re a good woman Shell.” “Yeah, and she’s my woman,” Gerard almost growled. “Hands off.” Frank just laughed while the others shook their heads. The whole thing was interrupted by a waitress bringing over a shareable, fancy dessert and the guys wishing her a ‘happy (band) mother’s day.’ She nearly told Gerard that night, but he was feeling possessive and she was more than willing to let him lay claim to her again - like she’d ever turn that down. Because of this, the busy touring schedule and all the travelling, she didn’t really get the opportunity to tell him the news for another… Five days. April 9th. ~#~ Just under a year later, Shelly had her first, fully qualified (not just on a technicality) Mother’s Day - she had an actual baby now! Melody Grace was born the November after she broke the news - apparently she had been a bit further along than she’d first thought. Gerard, however, chose not to wait until May; when he would normally celebrate Mother’s Day. Shelly was predominantly British, English, after all - and he knew that she was proud of that, really. Instead, he double checked the dates and decided to surprise his wife on the date that the British would celebrate Mother’s Day. He woke up before she did and managed to see to their baby before the little one started making enough noise to wake her mama. He fed her, singing softly to her as he winded her and got her ready for the day. He’d actually managed to steal some alone time with their daughter the day before - and during that time he’d managed to start making a card using Melody’s little handprint. Gerard had enough time to start gathering together stuff to make Shelly some breakfast before he heard a little bit of noise on the baby monitor that he’d thought to bring with him. As soon as he heard his wife, he scooped up their baby and made his way up to the bedroom. Shelly was sitting up, rubbing her eyes a little and looking confused. “Good morning love,” he said quietly, trotting over and gently putting the baby in the arms of his wife. “Morning,” she mumbled, holding Melody close and cooing to her. “Hello to you too pumpkin. Have you had some morning time with daddy?” Melody gurgled happily up at her mama and Gerard beamed with pride before leaning down to kiss his wife. “I’ll be back in a minute, okay?” He said, waiting for her to nod before disappearing back to go and make her breakfast - although he made a detour to his office first. He made her a simple breakfast, not because he couldn’t make her anything complicated, but purely because she didn’t often eat a lot in the morning. He made sure the tray was balanced, put the card he and Melody had made on it, alongside the gift he’d picked up and made his way back up to their bedroom. He carefully put the tray on the bed by her side before gently taking their daughter from her. Shelly looked up at him, clearly confused. “What… What is this?” “Have a look.” She frowned at him before reaching for the envelope propped up against the glass, flipping it over and opening it before easing the card out. She turned it over and her expression melted. “Is that -?” She glanced up at her husband, not opening the card because she was distracted by the picture on the front. “A little one’s handprint?” Gerard finished with a nod, moving around to perch on the edge of the bed next to her when he saw her… Almost crumple? “Hey, hey, it’s alright!” “It’s so tiny,” Shelly sniffled and leant against him as he hugged her as best as he could with one arm. “What’s all this for Gee?” “Open the card,” he kissed the side of her head. She looked up at him with a raised eyebrow before opening the card in her lap. Gerard watched her read the simple but heartfelt message before she frowned. “Gee?” Shelly carefully put the card aside, tucked her hair behind her ear and shifted to look at him properly. “It’s only March. Mother’s Day is in May.” “Over here, yes, that’s right,” he paused and could almost see her putting the pieces together. “But you’re mostly British, baby. The American date is for you as our band-mom. But you’re a baby mama now.” The blonde rubbed her eyes a little bit, obviously touched. “Gee, she’s not even one yet, she doesn’t know what’s going on.” He chuckled and gestured towards a small box on the breakfast tray. “No, but when she does, she’ll take over from me.” “You did not need to do anything for me for this,” she sighed, picking up the box and examining it, not quite opening it yet. “What’ve you been buying?” “Open it,” he urged gently. She frowned at him before doing as she was told. Nestled in the box was a pendant; a heart shaped November birthstone with a little silver oval tag attached. Engraved on one side of that tag, was the letter M, and on the other, Melody’s birthdate. “If we have more,” Gerard said softly. “Then you’ll get one for each baby. I… I um, I know you don’t like anything too big or obvious -” “Gee, it’s perfect,” she whispered. “It’s like the bracelet I have with you guys’ birthstones on it.” “Those are stars though.” “Mm, I know,” she put the box down and moved to press a kiss to his cheek. “Thank you, love.” Gerard beamed and managed to kiss her properly. Not for long though, because Melody squirmed in his arms. “Sorry pumpkin,” he adjusted her so she was higher on his chest. “Let mama eat first, then you can have more cuddles.” Melody cooed up at her father, and Shelly giggled. “And after breakfast, daddy’s gonna do whatever mama wants, all day.” Shelly snorted softly into her drink. “Gee, you do that anyway.” He grinned at  her upon hearing this. “Of course I do, you’re my woman, that’s my job. But really, I’ll even cook for you, if you want.” “Oh no, let’s not go that far.” “Hey!”
On Gender-critical disputes - Maya Forstater
LINK
Helen Joyce comes up with really good allegories and mental models at the rate of about one a week. But the one that I keep coming back to is one she told me the first time I met her, when I was still scrambling to keep my job at CGD, and trying to understand how it was that my smart and normally convivial colleagues had succumbed to repeating and enforcing irrational, circular nonsense.
1=0
Helen (a mathematician by training) said that pretending that human beings can change sex is like saying 1=0, and that the rules and laws we use for sense-making and decision-making are like a series of interconnected equations. When the 1=0 untruth proliferates through them it breaks things: single-sex becomes mixed-sex, fair becomes unfair, truth becomes lie. It works like kryptonite on safeguards, and causes organisations to operate in direct opposition to their purpose. People who need or want to remain inside those institutions create layers of argument (which may be impenetrable even to themselves) in order to protect the untruth and avoid being cast out.
On the sidelines of FiLiA in October, Helen and I had a long conversation with Jane Clare Jones about our respective positions in the internecine feminist wars.
I’m a feminist in the Rebecca West sense. I don’t claim to know precisely what feminism is; “I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat, or a prostitute.” I subscribe to the radical notion that women are full human beings, but I don’t subscribe to radical feminism, because I think it’s fundamentally wrong about human nature. Still, I am happy to work with people with whom I disagree where we have common goals.
I have co-founded a human-rights organisation, and I think that the human-rights framework is the way to resolve the question of how society should treat people who identify as transgender (respect their basic human rights and liberties, but don’t respect their fantasy).
Pretending that 1=0 harms everyone’s human rights. It harms women and girls (and, as Julie Bindel points out, it hurts the most powerless women and girls first and hardest), but also parents and children, religious people, people who care about truth and people who care about science. Ultimately, it harms anyone who wants to be able to do their job with integrity, and the people who depend on institutions acting with integrity (which is everyone, but again the least powerful most of all).
So I will talk with everyone who cares about this truth, and who is not seeking to destroy basic human rights (the principle of being “worthy of respect in a democratic society”).
Like most ordinary women in this fight, I think that Woman’s Place UK has done an amazing job in holding indoor events and articulating left-wing arguments, and I think that Standing for Women does an amazing job in holding outdoor events where any woman can speak. The cross-party working with parliamentarians by political activists of all stripes is also crucial.
In our long discussion with Jane in Cardiff, I encouraged her to take her beef with those she disagrees with off Twitter and to write it in long-form, focusing on the principles rather than the interpersonal conflicts and hurts. She and her colleagues at Radical Notion have had a go at that this month.
The essays and articles are long and winding (some of the footnotes are long enough to be blog posts in their own right). They add up to a broadside against people who work with anyone, the religious (Christians specifically), conservatives, and those with an evolutionary understanding of human psychology and society. Mary Harrington, Helen Joyce, Kellie-Jay Keen and Kathleen Stock all come in for personal criticism (Kellie-Jay Keen most of all).
I am she-who-cannot-be-named, but clearly I am one of the women doing-feminism-wrong.
I attend Standing for Women events and wear their merch; I follow @troonytunes; I view men dressing as women as a form of “womanface” (this is racist, apparently); I want to defend the word and concept of woman, not just female; I think Matt Walsh made a good film. I don’t think men who think they are women are oppressed, and I do think they can be laughed at.
Worse than this, I have taken part in events with Alliance Defending Freedom, and have even gone for a drink with them afterwards. I refused to denounce Kellie-Jay Keen because Hearts of Oak came to the Standing for Women event in Brighton and made a video. All this puts me outside the narrow bounds of acceptability defined by the Radical Notion team. Fair enough, that’s their party. I never applied to be part of the sisterhood. I don’t see much hope for it having mass appeal, though.
The criticisms of Kellie-Jay Keen, Kathleen Stock, Helen Joyce and Mary Harrington are long, personal, wrong and tedious (I just don’t recognise much of what they are describing and it would take me far too long to explain why). The articles vacillate incoherently between “we are not the same movement” and “we are mobilizing as a collective”.
Blame it on the Patriarchy
I think the reason the authors end up making long-winded and unsatisfactory arguments is because they start out from an idea about the world that is fundamentally wrong.
The editorial piece by Rose Rickford spells out the 1=0 statement in its first line: “Patriarchy is not universal, and it is not inevitable. It was developed by people through historical processes for the material purpose of controlling and appropriating women’s bodies and labour.
I think the idea that the thing called “patriarchy” was overlaid on top of (and after) the evolution of human bodies and minds is just as untrue as the idea that men can become women, or the nonsense that the “binary system of gender” is a Western, colonial export.
Every human being who was ever born was gestated inside the body of a woman (and until 1983 that woman was in every case the biological mother of that child). A foetus “appropriates” its mother’s body progressively from the moment of conception, stripping the calcium from her teeth and bones if it needs to, squashing her organs and stretching her pelvis. A baby may kill its mother on its way out. The whole process is primal and brutal. It is inevitable, universal, and in no sense man-made. “Patriarchy”, if it means appropriating women’s bodies for the production of children, is baked-in.
We share the basics of this with other animals, but human beings have some specific features: hidden ovulation (and therefore uncertain paternity) and long, dependent childhoods. It is our long and labour-intensive childhood that enables our species to be uniquely versatile in the ecological niches it occupies, and devastatingly creative in the problems we solve and create for each other. Human behavioural and intellectual flexibility, big brains, long dependent childhoods, painful birth, uncertain paternity, intensive parental involvement and sexual politics are inherent to humanity (it’s what the Bible seeks to explain in the story of The Fall).
The mother-child dyad and the mother-father-child triad are essential parts of who we are, in the same way that women are the “big gamete” people and men the “small gamete” ones. And this is not just about infancy. For a child to survive to reproductive adulthood, it must “appropriate” resources (food, energy, attention and protection), almost always from its mother and usually from its father too, for 15 years or more. Social structures co-evolved alongside the bodies and minds built to do this (men built for the small-gamete route to the future and women for the large-gamete one).
There are no societies that do not view nuclear family relationships as centrally important. The emotions that underpin them — lust, love, shame, sexual jealousy, the parent-child bond, guilt, anger, pride and so on — are evolved and universally recognisable.
There are no societies where women are not vulnerable to rape, or where men are not capable of it. There are no societies where women do not bear the risks and physical impacts of pregnancy, and the responsibility for their infants. There are no societies where men are not on average stronger, faster and more powerful than women. There are no societies where the question of who is the father of the child, and the role of the father in providing for that child, are not viewed as important, or which lack social norms, status and structures reflecting this.
The idea that these features of “patriarchy” did not co-evolve with our big-brained, creative, flexible, language-using species is as improbable as people being “born in the wrong body”.
While I recognise the painful split that Jane describes, her division of the two teams into “true feminists” and “gender-critical identitarianism” is off the mark.
I think what we are seeing is the contradictions of a philosophy that does not make sense (it envisages a world where male violence is universal, but not biological; where women and men’s interests are negotiated on a “sex-class” basis; where family can be replaced by collective, and where prosperity exists without capitalism). It is another case of when ideology meets reality.
By contrast, what might be called “Mumsnet feminism” focuses on the messy material reality of mothers, fathers (good and bad, present and absent) and children, who need care and protection. It may be low on theory but it can see gender ideology and queer theory for what it is; an attack on the social structures that protect children (many of which are derided as part of the patriarchy by those who see the world this way).
A key theme running through criticisms of the “populists” in the magazine is disapproval at calling-out the behaviour of male sexual deviants in dresses, and at “othering” people who pretend to be the opposite sex.
But this is the dark heart of what we have not been allowed to talk about. Pronouns are rohypnol. Language is an evolved, hard-wired risk-appraisal protocol. So too is the ability to see things, say what we see and recognise patterns. The moral disgust reflex is part of this. So too is laughter and ridicule.
Jane argues that we should try to repress feelings of distaste, disgust or mirth at men in women’s clothing (and sometimes that is the polite or prudent thing to do). But encouraging people to repress the tools of pattern recognition and risk appraisal, and cast-out those who don’t is how the gender ideology movement works. It make things unsayable and lowers people’s barriers. Men in women’s spaces should raise alarm. This is the practical truth that the thought-control and language-control has been trying to obscure.
Freedom of expression, the ability to make arguments and observations in plain, simple language is crucial. So too is the ability to mock and laugh (which is a means of saying that something isn’t right). None of this should be forbidden.
I hope that when the battle for clarity about biological sex in law and policy has been won, a new Darwinian feminist synthesis might develop. Understanding how we came to be does not mean accepting that we cannot change anything.
Right now, though, I am busy trying to work with and communicate with whoever is concerned by gender ideology. Jane Clare Jones and her colleagues may choose to work with a smaller circle that doesn’t include me, or Helen, Kellie-Jay, Kathleen Stock or Mary Harrington, or religious women and men, or conservative women and men, or so many ordinary people who just want to say men are not women, and children need protecting.
In a choice between being part of an ideologically pure sisterhood and pragmatic and effective impact, I would chose impact.
The Global Food Phosphate market was estimated at USD 2.65 billion in 2021, and is anticipated to reach USD 3.98 billion by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 6%.
The vital application of phosphate is that it holds more water in meat and poultry products during cooking which enhances the color, texture, flavor, and juiciness of the product. Phosphate is mined in the form of rock globally. It is crushed and treated with sulphuric acid and further solvent extraction of phosphoric acid is done and then it is released in the aqueous phase. Sodium pyrophosphate is used in seafood products. Phosphate fortified juices and tea are gaining popularity among the majority population. The rise in demand for various bakery products such as pizzas, burgers, pastries, rolls, and doughnuts is going to boost the food phosphate market in the forecast period, it is because the bakery industry is opting for phosphate additives to add nutrition value to the products with no side effects.
BLACK-OWNED CLEAN SKINCARE BRANDS
Since it's Black History Month, I thought I'd put together a post on Black-owned and founded clean skincare brands.
This is not a comprehensive list of all Black-owned skincare brands, just those I could find that focus on using clean ingredients, which is this blog's focus.
I hope it's informative and brings some new skincare brands to your attention.
Fenty Skin brings that same ethos to bear on providing clean skincare for all skin types, with a special focus on melanin-rich skin.
Their Vitamin C collection is particularly popular, with the Bright Side serum being a bestseller. For more sensitive skin, try the Rose Renewal Moisturizer.
GOLDE
Co-founded by Trinity Mouzon Wofford and Issey Kobori. This brand focuses on harnessing the power of superfoods because good skin depends on so much more than what you're putting on it. Most of their products are dedicated to drink mixes, but their small skincare line has made a big splash with the Clean Greens and Papaya Bright face masks. Perhaps they'll add more to their skincare line in the future.
hyper! Skin
Founded by Desiree Verdeho, who struggled with acne as a teen and decided to seek solutions for others with melanin-rich skin. hyper! is all about treating dark spots and hyperpigmentation. Their Hyper Even serum is award-winning. It seems like they plan to expand their line into other skincare solutions soon, so keep an eye out for that.
KEYS Soulcare
Founded by none other than Alicia Keys. The R&B artist has been very open about her problems with "bad skin," mostly due to cosmetic use -- particularly those used on stage -- and performing under hot stage lights. After trying multiple skincare brands that promised solutions and finally swearing off makeup altogether, Keys started her own skincare brand focusing on clean ingredients, known solutions, and healthy naturals for melanin-rich skin.
Pholk Beauty
Founded by Niambi Cacchioli. Has a melanin-centric approach. "We don't just fade melanin, we balance [it]...because we know that melanin is good for you." Relies on botanicals sourced from Black American farmers. You'll see actives offered here that you won't elsewhere because Pholk is dedicated to harnessing the power of native plants that farmers are already producing, like lemon balm and honeysuckle. Dietary Supplements Industry Overview, Trends, Growth Drivers, and Opportunities
The global dietary supplements market is projected to grow from USD 167.5 billion in 2023 to USD 239.4 billion in 2028, at a CAGR of 7.4% during the forecast period. The factors driving the growth are the increasing elderly population, the shift from pharmaceuticals towards nutraceuticals, amino acids, and protein supplements due to the focus on preventive healthcare, and the growing personalized nutrition, which is supporting the dietary supplement industry. Consumers are shifting focus toward self-directed care driven by the growing personal health, weight management, and well-being trend. The Russia-Ukraine war disrupted the chances of global economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The alopecia areata market is expected to reach $4.35 billion in 2027 at a CAGR of 7.1%. The growing prevalence of hair loss is expected to propel the growth of the alopecia areata market going forward. Hair loss is caused by disrupting the body's normal hair growth cycle. Alopecia areata treatment employs corticosteroids, potent anti-inflammatory medications that can inhibit the immune system, to treat a condition where the immune system destroys hair follicles and results in hair loss. For instance, in March 2022, according to an article by the Hair Society, a US-based full-service professional organization, hair loss affected about 21 million women and 35 million men globally. The majority of people in the world will lose their hair starting at age 35, with a 40% loss rate for males and increasing to a 70% loss rate for men at age 80. Women with hair loss will account for 80% or more by age 60. Therefore, the growing prevalence of hair loss is driving the growth of the alopecia areata market. New Revenue Sources in Insect Repellent Active Ingredients Market
Insect repellents are substances designed to deter insects from landing on the treated surface or contacting the skin. They are commonly used to prevent insect bites and the transmission of insect-borne diseases. There are several active ingredients found in insect repellent products, each with varying degrees of effectiveness and duration.
The insect repellent active ingredients market is estimated at USD 1.0 billion in 2023; it is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7.6% to reach USD 1.5 billion by 2028.
Some of the most common active ingredients in insect repellents include:
DEET (N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide): DEET is one of the most widely used and effective insect repellents. It can provide long-lasting protection against a variety of insects, including mosquitoes, ticks, and biting flies. DEET's effectiveness increases with higher concentrations, but concentrations above 50% don't necessarily provide significantly longer protection. DEET can be used on skin and clothing.
Picaridin (also known as Icaridin): Picaridin is another effective insect repellent that provides protection against mosquitoes, ticks, and other biting insects. It is less likely to damage synthetic materials, such as plastics and fabrics, compared to DEET. Picaridin is generally odorless, feels less greasy than DEET, and is considered a good alternative for people who prefer non-DEET options.
Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE): Derived from the lemon eucalyptus plant, OLE is a natural insect repellent. The active ingredient in OLE is called PMD (para-menthane-3,8-diol), which has been shown to effectively repel mosquitoes. However, it's important to note that OLE is not recommended for children under three years old.
IR3535: This is an organic compound that works as an insect repellent against a variety of pests, including mosquitoes, ticks, and flies. It has a low odor and is considered safe for use on the skin.
Natural Extracts and Essential Oils: Some natural extracts and essential oils, such as citronella, lavender, cedarwood, and eucalyptus, are believed to have insect-repelling properties. While these can provide some level of protection, they tend to be less effective and have shorter durations compared to synthetic repellents like DEET and picaridin.
Asia Pacific is expected to account for the largest market share in 2023.
The insect repellent active ingredients market industry has been studied in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, South America and Rest of the World. The Asia Pacific region is known for having a high prevalence of insect-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, and Zika virus. According to article by National Library of Medicine 2022, India reported a ZIKV outbreak in Kerala in July 2021, the first activity in the region of South-East Asia since the outbreak in Rajasthan, India, in 2018. At least 70 ZIKV disease cases were found after extensive testing and confirmed by PCR by August 2021. These diseases pose significant health risks to the population, leading to a greater demand for insect repellent products and active ingredients to protect against insect bites. Major players operating in the insect repellent active ingredients market includes Spectrum Brands Inc. (US), Reckitt Beneckiser Group Plc (UK), Henkel AG & Co KGaA (Germany), MERCK KGaA (Germany), S.C. Johnson & Son Inc. (US), Dabur (India), Godrej (India), Sawyer (US), BUGG Products, LLC (US), Coghlan’s (Canada), Vertellus (US), Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd (Japan), Clariant (Switzerland), Citrefine (UK), NK Chemiosys Pvt. Ltd. (India), and Shorgun Organics (India).
DEET segment, by type, is expected to account for the largest share in 2023.
DEET has been proven to be highly effective in repelling a wide range of biting insects, including mosquitoes, ticks, flies, and fleas. It is known to provide long-lasting protection, making it a preferred choice for individuals seeking reliable insect repellent solutions. DEET can be used in various formulations, such as sprays, lotions, creams, and wipes, making it suitable for different user preferences and needs. It can be applied directly to the skin or on clothing, making it versatile for both personal and outdoor use.
