I think it’s time for some good old fashioned journaling since I can post again
#so. as y’all know the reason I’ve been largely avoiding posting and interacting with me is bc one of my friends thought it was funny to#find my account right? however as a joke a few weeks ago she was like haha look at what I can see#naturally that made me incredibly unhappy and until I could have a serious conversation with her I all but stopped speaking to her#i had a conversation with her and pretty much put it down to there are things I do not want to share with you and you severely went against#my privacy and this is not something I will get over if forgive. hopefully eventually I will move past it#and she was pretty much like oh yeah my bad it was a bad taste joke didn’t know u cared so much#like. I’ve been saying for Years. do not come find me or it will end our friendship. to any close friend I’ve come across#i genuinely don’t think she understood why I was so upset just due to the fact that she fundamentally doesn’t care about things#like she does not have interests. that’s not something she does. when she has an occasional one she would rather die than admit she cares#and in general it’s whatever. u do u. but when that stops you from seeing how much other people care about things? we have problems#she literally said to my face oh sorry I didn’t know tumblr was your deepest darkest secret#like. you’ve got to be kidding me#she wasn’t defensive when I tried to talk to her. but I really don’t think she got why I’m so upset about this. like not a clue#she was just like. ok. my bad. i won’t be back and I haven’t been back#which. was a lie she has been and I called her out on that and she literally was like. well. except for that#and she asked me like oh do u have anything else u wanna say and I was like not now but maybe later#i knew I wasn’t going to just forgive her. i know my trust isn’t just rebuildable I have trust issues as it is. but I don’t think that#conversation fixed a single thing. i pretty much just let her know I was upset with her. that is all that accomplished.#i don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget this honestly. and quite frankly I have no wish to continue to speak to her as it is#unfortunately my future sits with her as she’s moving to college with me next year where I’ll have to rely on her for rides and then to#cali where we’re moving in with several friends#this isn’t something that can be fixed. and she just keeps FaceTiming me like we’re good and I keep declining#I’m just so torn bc honestly my go to for this situation is cut off contact no one is worth me losing my sense of privacy. no one#but I don’t think I can here. as it stands I will be relying on her. i guess I could do it myself but it will be a massive pain#as cold as it seems to weigh someone’s existence in my life in an unemotional pros and cons list unfortunately I haven’t the luxury of#looking at this from an emotional standpoint. though to be fair. I’ve learned to not rely on my emotions for decisions#soup talks#girl hit me right in the worst sort of trauma I have and I finally have the opportunity to do what I wish I could have done years ago. leave#start fresh. start with people who don’t know me yet who will respect my privacy. who make me feel safe

A/N -  Sorry for the extended wait on this one. I had more things to do than I expected when it came to arranging things for my shop and had other things I needed to take care of in my personal life. But yeah, the wait is finally over!
Also, apologies that it's a little shorter than my usual chapters. I'll do my best to make the next ones a bit longer, but I really didn't have anything else to add for this one that would flow with it.
Tumblr media
You sat in the living room, Taehyung having helped you out of bed, feeling strangely nervous with the woman smiling at you from across the small table.
“How are you doing, dear?” she asked.
“I-I’m fine, eomeoni,” you replied.
“You’re not hurt or anything?” You could feel her eyes roaming over your body, trying to check for injuries.
“No. Only some minor bruises and scrapes, nothing serious,” you assured her. “They did an x-ray and everything so we know my legs are fine.”
“Good, I’m glad those brats didn’t cause you any extra trouble than they already have,” she said, standing up. “I’m assuming you haven’t eaten yet?”
“Oh. No, I guess I haven’t.”
She walked to your kitchen, opening up one of the bags that she had brought with her. “I brought plenty of side dishes, and I can cook up some rice and meat. Shouldn’t take too long to get some dinner ready.”
“Thank you,” you said with a soft smile.
“How long are you planning on staying?” Taehyung asked.
“Probably about two weeks, if that’s alright with Y/n,” she replied.
“Two weeks?” Tae repeated. “That’s a long time. You sure you don’t need to go back home sooner?”
“If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were unhappy to see me.”
“No, that’s not it,” Tae said. “I am just surprised, is all. Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”
“Because I wanted to surprise you,” she replied. “Is it too much for a mother to expect her son to be happy to see her?”
“I am happy!” Taehyung replied, shuffling quickly into the kitchen to hug his mother. He had her arms restrained in his grip, stopping her from getting out ingredients to cook with while he smothered her. “I missed you,” he singsonged, elongating the last syllable for emphasis. “I love you, eomma!” Tae loudly smacked a kiss to her cheek, making her laugh.
“Okay, okay,” she said, patting his arm in an effort to get him to loosen his grip. “Let me make you food.”
Tae made a whining noise. “You didn’t say it back.”
Mrs. Kim sighed, chuckling. “I love you too, Taehyung. Now can I have my arms back please?”
Tae smiled widely as he let her get back to what she was doing, and walked back into the living room to keep out of the way.
The whole exchange had you smiling, unable to not be endeared by the cute sight. But as she resumed getting ingredients ready you couldn’t help but ask, “Are you sure you want to stay for that long, eomeoni?”
“I’ll only stay that long if it’s okay with you, sweetheart,” she said. “I don’t want to overstay my welcome, but I figured it might be nice for you to have a mother’s touch around here while you’re healing. And of course the company.” She turned to you to smile sweetly.
While you couldn’t help but to feel nervous with the knowledge that the mother of the boy you’d been crushing on for longer than you’d like to admit was going to be staying with you that long, you also couldn’t deny that that did sound nice.
“If you want me to leave sooner, that’s perfectly okay,” Mrs. Kim said when you took a moment to respond. “I won’t be offended.”
“No, it’s fine,” you assured her. “You’re not wrong. It does get a bit lonely sometimes.”
You could practically hear the frown on Tae’s face, it was so deep. “I’m sorry, noona. I wish we could spend more time with you.”
“Stop apologizing,” you said. “You guys have a job to do. Don’t feel bad for something that you can’t help.”
As Mrs. Kim made dinner, which was smelling more and more delicious by the minute, she caught up with Taehyung. She told him stories about his siblings—how well his sister was doing in school, the crazy stories his brother had come up with recently—and other things he’d missed from home since the last time they saw each other.
Despite it not being long at all since the last time you saw your own mother, you couldn’t help but miss your family as you heard them talk. But more than that, you smiled as you listened, Mrs. Kim’s frequent looks in your direction as she talked a queue that she was okay with you being included in the conversation. You knew that Taehyung, as well as the other members, missed their families a lot so it was really nice to see him get to spend some time with his mother.
As if summoned by the presence of food, not one moment after Taehyung’s mother announced that dinner was ready was your door opened and the rest of the boys walked in.
“You said your mom is here?” Jimin asked Taehyung.
“Yup, she just finished making dinner,” he confirmed.
“Eomeoni!” Jin called brightly, walking into the kitchen. “Let me help you with that.” He took one of the plates of food from her to carry back to the table.
“Thank you, Seokjin,” she said. “I was just about to ask Taehyung to call you guys over to eat. Good timing.”
The others all greeted her as they helped set up the table before sitting down to eat.
Dinner was, just as you assumed by the wonderful smells coming from the kitchen, really delicious. Taehyung particularly looked incredibly happy to be eating his mother’s cooking again, and the table was filled with praise from everyone about how amazing it was.
“I don’t know what it is, but there’s just something about a mother’s cooking,” Hoseok said as he cleaned the last bits of rice from his bowl. “So delicious.”
“You can say that again,” Namjoon agreed. “I don’t think I’ve felt this satisfied after a meal since the last time noona cooked for us.”
Your brows furrowed, going over the interaction in your head again. “I’m not a mother, though. If that’s the standard you’re talking about, then why my cooking...?”
“We already covered this, noona,” Jungkook said. “You and Sejin-hyung are our parents.”
You rolled your eyes.
“Not to mention, you’re surprisingly good at making Korean food,” Jin added. “Even better than me, really.”
“Well thank you, but I’m sure that you can agree I am absolutely nowhere near this level,” you said. “Thank you so much for dinner, eomeoni. It was really delicious.”
“You’re all very welcome,” Mrs. Kim responded, starting to stack dishes.
“Leave that to me,” Taehyung said, taking them from her hands and taking them into the kitchen. “Those who cook don’t do the dishes.”
“Well, that’s new,” his mom said, sounding surprised. “Thank you, Taehyung.”
After Taehyung and Jimin did the dishes together, you ushered everyone back to their own house. They had a bunch of fan sign events the next few days, so you didn’t want them staying up too late when they needed all the energy they could get.
Before leaving, Namjoon realized Tae’s mother would need to know how to get you in and out of your chair if she were to be helping you, so he helped show her how to do it properly, and someone else had thought to bring some blankets and pillows for her as well while you were busy with that.
Once that was all done and everyone else left, you couldn’t help but feel nervous with the fact that it was just the two of you left in your house. You had yet to be alone with her, and while you weren’t entirely sure why you felt nervous you had an inkling it had something to do with the fact that you had more than platonic feelings toward her son.
She quickly eased those nerves when she broke the silence between you. “I haven’t gotten a chance to thank you yet.”
You looked at her curiously. “Thank me? For what?”
“For what you did for my son,” she clarified. “He’s been telling me so much about you ever since you became their manager, so I already knew you were a good person. But not everyone would have done what you did that day.”
The compliment in that statement left you feeling shy. “It was really nothing,” you said, voice quiet. “Part of my job is to make sure nothing happens to them. That they’re safe.”
Mrs. Kim hummed. “That may be true, but I’m sure that doesn’t usually include jumping in the middle of danger for them. You’re not a security guard. And even then, most people wouldn’t go that far. The natural reaction to something like that is to either freeze from shock, or protect yourself. And there’s no shame in that. But it really speaks volumes about who you are as a person that you only considered his well-being in a split moment like that.”
You had no idea what you could say to that. You understood what she was saying, and it was true that your own personal safety wasn’t even in the smallest corner of your mind until you were already hurt. But how do you take a compliment, a praise, like that casually?
When you stayed silent, she reached out to place her hand on top of where yours rested in your lap. “Taehyung has had nothing but great things to say about you ever since you met. That boy could just look at someone and then suddenly they’re friends. But even then, I can tell who he really considers important, who he is closest to. You’re definitely one of those people for him. And I’m really glad to know that his group has you, seeing the testament to what you’re willing to do for them. But at the same time, I do hope you don’t forget to take care of yourself and your own safety first from now on, too. Okay?”
Still feeling as though your vocal chords suddenly froze up and stopped working, the only thing you could do was nod in response.
Taehyung’s mother smiled brightly—that smile was most definitely genetic—at your confirmation that you’d be more careful, patting your hand before helping you get into bed for the night.

In conversation with Raphael Doyle ...
Tumblr media
A few weeks ago my attention was drawn to a video in which Tom Robinson [Tom Robinson Band / presenter on BBC radio] spoke about a project he’s working on with his old friend, Raphael Doyle. Now, Crowd Funding has become the ‘in thing’ and many people pay it no mind, but this pledge was different. And why? Because there’s real a story behind it - This is not just about a band expecting their fans to donate money in return for a signed photo, or a cheesy ringtone, thus ensuring  the next album is made. From what I’ve heard, the album is going to be something special musically - but not only that, this album is a genuine work of LOVE; not for profit. but for the sake of creativity, for the music ; it’s about old friends, and new, coming together to be a part of Raphael’s album - And they’re against the clock  (for more than one reason) which makes it all the more compelling. I was, of course, interested to know more about Raphael, who along with Tom Robinson and Hereward Kaye in the late 1960’s, formed the trio ‘Cafe Society’.
I should imagine you’re already familiar with Tom, and perhaps Hereward too [from his days with The Flying Pickets], but Raphael has clearly managed to remain off the radar - until now! Born in Northern Ireland, Raphael absconded to England when he was 15 - An unconventional teenager, but a keen songwriter and poet - he found himself at Finchden Manor in Kent, before carving a career, one way or another, in music. ‘Cafe Society’ enjoyed a relative amount of success but it was short lived, and following the break up of the band in 1976, Raphael’s  biography states that he was, at that time “Painfully short on confidence and increasingly dependent on drink”. By the time he was 19 Raphael had already married Rose. Over 40 years later, through thick and thin, and with a clan of four children, they’re still going strong! When I first spoke to him he was telling me about his return to living in the North East of England, having been lucky enough to buy back the very same house he and Rose had lived in as a young couple ; add to that his return to making music, and it would seem that there are many aspects of his life that are coming ‘full circle’.   “Never Closer” is the title of the album - Raphael sings us through a number of extraordinary tracks inspired by “a messy life encompassing darkness and recovery pain and love”,  but at the end of it all, quite contentedly  concludes - “The whole journey has definitely been worth it” ... You can keep up with Raphael’s story, and the pledge campaign, as it unfolds via his website and social media, but in the meantime, we thought we’d attempt to extract some more of his memories about those early days as a musician.
HR : If you’re open to talking about it Raphael, I’d like to go back to 1968 - to Finchden Manor**, where you met up with Tom Robinson - what was life like there?
Raphael Doyle : Well, I was 15 when I arrived at Finchden. I'd come from Northern Ireland where I'd had unhappy fallings out with a couple of schools.  I was clashing with the conservative, Catholic environment of my upbringing, and I was a fledgling hippy in the world that didn't like that. Finchden was like another world entirely - suddenly you found yourself somewhere where you weren't in the wrong all the time - where you could be yourself. It was very unstructured. Your time was your own.
HR : Were you encouraged to be creative?
RD : It wasn't so much that you were encouraged to be creative, but more that you were given the space to be yourself. So some people got into making things, some got into gardening, lots of us spent a lot of time talking. And there was a great spilling out of creativity, whether music, art, pottery, poetry. Whatever people had in them. Just in the time that I was there, there was Matthew Collings scribbling away amazing cartoon-like drawings, who has gone on to become a very highly regarded artist and art critic. There was Mike Medora who was playing searing blues guitar and he went on to do the festival circuit with Global Village Trucking company. There was Danny Kustow, still a much loved guitarist, who became famous beside Tom Robinson in TRB. There was the amazing and eccentric Robert Godfrey who went off to form the Enid, a legendary prog rock band, and he took with him a bunch of other boys, notably Francis Lickerish, another brilliant guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. And there was Tom and me, writing songs, putting groups together- and I guess we were encouraged, yes. We used to be brought out to play to visitors… I remember us being taken off on long journeys in George Lyward- the founder -in his old car to visit Lord and Lady somebody or other in a mansion, and he would give a fundraising talk, and Tom and I would sing a couple songs, and then wander outside where we chanced upon this old guy in ancient corduroys tending a rhubarb patch, who turned out to be the Lord himself. Very PG Wodehouse!
HR : Actually it sounds like fun,  despite being a difficult time ... There’s a great quote from Hereward [Kaye] about your songwriting, he says “The lyrics were all his own and smelt of trouble. How I longed to be deeply troubled like him!”     What was it about music, and songwriting that engaged you? Is it fair to say that without music, you may have strayed onto a very different path?
RD : Well, Hereward was right. I was a troubled young man. We all were at Finchden. But even before I went there, back in Northern Ireland, music and writing had become my escape valve. I came from a little seaside town, and a Scottish wild card called Colvin Hamilton took over the swimming pool cafe and turned it into a venue -  The Scene  - and he would bring down bands from Belfast. This was at the height of the early 60s R&B boom. ‘Van Morrison’ and ‘Them’ were the big name. I was too young to be let in but I'd spend the weekend nights with my ear pressed to the blacked out plate glass window, listening to that raw, rough earthy music. And at home, and in friends’ houses, I was listening to Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Nina Simone, Ray Charles, Buddy Guy, Robert Johnson, John Mayalls blues breakers ... So Music was already my landscape. It didn't stop me getting into trouble though!  So it was arriving at Finchden, having a place of respite , the chance to heal and grow, and there to get together with Tom and start honing my musical instincts - that's where my direction became set. I became a musician at Finchden.
HR : It was Tom who introduced you to Hereward, in Middlesborough - what happened in the interim before you eventually moved to London and formed ‘Cafe Society’?
RD : Tom's family were living in the north-east and I went up there with him for a holiday. A neighbour of his decided to introduce us to some other arty young folk she knew of from Middlesbrough, and that's where Hereward came in. We just clicked - it wasn't so usual then to meet others passionately into writing and making music. Hereward in Teesside and Tom and I in Kent would make reel to reel revox recordings of each new song and post them to each other, then when we'd meet 2 or 3 times a year and we'd have long sessions playing the songs to each other and trying out harmonies. So then when we finally got together in London it was natural to get into a bedroom or a cellar and just spend hours playing and arranging and practicing.... We were buzzing on it.
HR : From what I’ve read, many people were buzzing about it, including Alexis Korner. You had a really strong connection to him - how did that come about?
RD : Alexis had been at Finchden in his youth - he was an 'old boy'. While we were there his daughter Sappho stayed for a while ... I remember Alexis and Sappho singing the country blues song “Trouble In Mind” together. This was when Tom and I would be wheeled out to play for visitors and there were some powerful times when Alexis and us would play in a packed Oak Room to visitors and wild eyed disturbed adolescents ... So Alexis got to know us and became something of a mentor. HR : Alexis was really big on the music scene, especially with  ‘Blues Incorporated’ - how connected  were you to all of that?
RD : I remember staying at his place in Queensway and meeting John Mayall - I was a bit dumbstruck. It wasn't that long before that I'd been standing in the dark in a blues club in Belfast watching the ‘Blues Breakers’ with John Mayall and the new guitarist Peter Green playing stunning music, and here was the man standing before me. I don't know what I mumbled but I think it was embarrassing. Another time I was sitting in Alexis' front room with Andy Fraser who was someone Tom and I both loved very much. We'd been to see ‘Free’ at the Redcar Jazz club - the place of been jampacked and heaving and the band were incredible. And here was Andy talking to Alexis about what to do now Free had broken up. He put together a band called Toby. A little while later Hereward and I nicked his drummer Stan Speake, for the band we were putting together while we were waiting for Tom to come to London.
HR : So when Tom arrived, and ‘Cafe Society’ formed properly, what attracted you to the folk scene above any of the others?
RD : We didn't really choose the folk scene. It was just that we were three guys with acoustic guitars, a focus on harmonies, writing our own songs. In those days you either put together a band and played places like the hundred club, or you went to the booming folk circuit. So we began there ...
HR : You landed a residency, as a 3 piece, at The Troubadour coffee house - what do you remember about those first performances?
RD : As far as I remember we had a residency at Bunjies first. We were playing around a lot of clubs- The Rising Sun in Tottenham Court road was a good one. But the Troubadour had the cachet; it had a more serious reputation. We used to go down there and do floor spots on other people's nights and gradually we were building up a following. So then we got a night of our own-Tuesday nights.   It was a wonderful time, a very atmospheric place to try out new songs, to practice our harmonies. We had a captive audience in a little space and it became a shared experience. I think we had a very distinctive blend.   Tom was serious about the nuts and bolts of arrangements and song structure. Hereward was a showman, flamboyant in his songs and performance, and I would escape into the music and let my soul pour out. It made for a dynamic blend. And we were all fans, we all loved music, for us the people we listened to were our heroes and we wanted to join them. HR : And it wasn’t long before you did, was it? RD : No - By now we were trying to get a deal. That was the big Next step in those days. First you build up a bit of a following, then you got management, then you got a deal. We got a manager. Hereward knew John McCoy who ran music venues in and around Middlesbrough where he came from. John went on to become Chris Rea's manager and got him signed and started on his career. We used to go up and play at the Kirk, the most happening club on Teesside at the time, which John owned and ran. He listened to our stuff and wasn't quite sure what to make of it but he agreed to manage us, and one thing led to another and it resulted in Ray Davies of ‘The Kinks’ coming down to the troubadour to check us out. It was the same night Alexis was headlining for us so there was a real buzz in the air. Ray did a bit of a floor spot with us standing alongside not quite able to believe what was happening. Ray saw something in us, I think, that chimed with his own sense of song. He signed us up to his new indie label Konk -the first one in the country-and he himself produced our first album.
HR : Presumably that opened a few doors?
RD : Sure. From playing the London folk clubs, suddenly we were getting support act slots on national tours. We supported ‘The Kinks’ a whole bunch of times,  which was a bit odd because we were this very well mannered acoustic trio in the middle of the stage set up for this raucous pop rock band and the audiences were kind of looking for a good time. But we went down surprisingly well on those tours.  HR : Didn’t you also open for Barclay James Harvest? RD : Yes -That was a bit weird because they were a full blown prog rock band with colours and smoke and atmospherics and everyone took the whole thing very seriously!   I think for some of them a support band was just a necessary evil so we felt a bit sidelined. But luckily a lot of their audiences were the listening kind and enjoyed what we did. Also I have to say that Woolly Wolstenholme was a really sweet guy and he was always very encouraging and would make time for us. We learned a great deal on all of those shows. Sometimes it's when you're not doing your own show, but having to make your mark in someone else's, that you can learn most about holding true to yourself and standing firm as a performer. Then I remember we did the Alan Hull solo album tour. Alan was big at that point as the singer songwriter of Lindisfarne so it was a much better match for us as an acoustic trio. He did the whole tour solo and the audiences were great for us.  Mind you the dressing room was a place to be .... A parade of beautiful people hobnobbing with the latest thing ... Eh, that'd be him, not us!
HR : So as things progressed, and you were having this amount of success as a trio, what prompted you to add more members and form a ‘proper’ band, changing the dynamic, and presumably the sound?
RD : Well, as I said, we weren't really a folk group. We did love people like Neil Young,  Paul Simon, Dylan... We used to finish with a James Taylor song “Lo and behold” . Tom always really liked Richard Thompson. I remember at The Troubadour we used to sing the Fairport song 'Meet on the Ledge'. But really our folk credentials were accidental. We always saw ourselves as a band. Hereward and I had both been in blues bands, and played the raunchier end of R&B pop. Tom's musical interests ranged really widely. He was a big fan of early ‘Manfred Mann’. He and I were besotted with ‘The Band’, “Music from Big Pink”. So really we were just waiting for the chance to expand and go electric - unfortunately it happened just as Ray Davies was making the first album with us. He signed an acoustic trio, but while Ray was supervising recording us at Konk, a process in which we didn't feel we had much say, we were off down the road when not needed in the studio, doing our own demos in a little place in Holloway with a drummer and a bass player and a keyboard player. We abandoned the folk circuit and started to play the pub scene. The Golden Lion in Fulham, The Three Kings in North End Road where the unknown Elvis Costello was forcing himself on the attentions of a bemused audience! Upstairs at Ronnie Scott's. There was a new buzz around and we wanted to spread our wings. So with one thing and another the Konk relationship fizzled out.
HR : ‘Cafe Society’ were dubbed band of the year by Sounds magazine in 1976, but the same year saw  the arrival of ‘The Sex Pistols’ and a whole new scene - what impact did Punk have on you and the rest of the band?
RD : We had built up an expanded following as a band and it felt like we had lots to do. But Ray Davies brought in a production team to work on our second album, who were nice guys but they were not about new music. We were trying to make a go of it with them, and Hereward and I were both newly married and putting a lot of time into that side of things - so the impact of punk, for me at least, Was Tom turning up one night to visit me and sitting down in the front room and telling me how he had been going to the hundred club and seeing  this group - ‘The Sex Pistols’ - and that everything was changing. Tom was going out nights and seeing them and ‘The Clash’, the new bands, and he knew that the album we were recording was redundant.   And he did the right thing. He went off and he dived into the deep end of this new wave. A few short months later Hereward and I were standing at the back of the Lyceum on the Strand looking in disbelief at this mass of thousands of people all with their backs to us, Facing forwards, arms raised and yelling to the rafters for TRB. We didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I think we did both, but very proudly.
HR : It seems at that point, Tom was destined to go a different route - did you and Hereward plan to continue?
RD : When Tom announced he was leaving I didn't want, for myself, to carry on. But Hereward really wanted us to finish the album, which was looking more of a Hereward album anyway. So we continued. But it was without any real sense of ownership or involvement or hope. Really, it was over when Tom left.
HR : What direction did you take musically after the band broke up for good?
RD : I put together a band doing mostly my songs and some of my favourites. There was still a healthy pub rock circuit in London and we were playing places like the golden lion in Fulham and the Stapleton near Crouch end where the Jam were making their mark. There was a buzz - EMI were interested. Robert Plant came down to check us out. But the truth is my confidence was in bits ... I would be sick and need a drink before going on. I couldn't handle the business side - promoters, A&R men. Aargh. It freaks me out just remembering it. You either have the balls to be a good self promoter or you don't. I didn't. I carried on writing songs and playing in many different settings - clubs, in pubs, in schools, and made a couple of albums with a  gospel rock band in England and in the states. Later I returned to the blues with an old friend Paul Davey on guitar. I always loved Paul's playing and he has a quality to him which is very authentic. He is not flashy, he's like The early Peter Green I saw all those years ago in Belfast. But essentially I think I'm still what you might call a soul/folk singer. I love to make contemporary music that is now on the surface, but plunging deep into the timeless in the feel
HR : Some 40 years later there seem to be a lot of things that are coming full circle in your life ... in music particularly ...
RD : Yeah - Really when I look back my life has been about life, but music is a thread that runs through it either in the actual doing of it or in the yearning for it. I absolutely love making music. And that special magical thing of making music with really good musicians, where an unspoken understanding happens and creates a platform on which something even better then you know how to make, actually suddenly happens. A moment outside time. I remember seeing an interview with a very respectable English poet John Betjeman  - he was old and in failing health and he was asked rather respectfully if he had any regrets. And he said "yes. I wish I'd had more sex ". That's how I feel about that level of music making. And that's why am so blown away with what's been happening. Everything I've hungered for has come to me this year.  Making a new album, working with great people, and a really special night at the Troubadour. HR : Oh yes - the show at The Troubadour - how did it feel to perform there again? Was the atmosphere the same?
RD : Actually, the atmosphere was even better than before! I've just been listening to a recording of the opening song, “Give Us A Break”. It's a song of Tom's he and I used to do back at Finchden and we did it acoustically to start the night and it was magic. Then a series of great artists doing floor spots, then me with a spot-on young band, and Tom and Hereward getting up to join in. It was a 10 course meal by candle light! And the audience .... They might as well have been on stage, we were all so involved together.
HR : You remained friends with Tom, and Hereward - as you say they played with you recently, and have teamed in for your Solo album “Never Closer” - how does it feel to be back in their company on a creative level?
RD : Well you know we haven't been strangers to each other.
Hereward and I are brothers in law as well as friends so there's always been opportunities for us to get the guitars out and play together.  My song “Feet on the Floor”, on the new album, wouldn't be the same without Herry's harmonies.  And he's put a lovely, subtle keyboard part on “Kiltermon”, one of the most important songs for me. Tom though, his part in this has been crucial. He says he sees himself as executive producer, just making sure it happens but leaving the music up to me. The truth is he is much more than that. Looking back to the beginning, I wouldn't even be a serious musician but for Tom. And so to be doing this album in partnership with him is just fantastic.
The sense of coming full circle, of completion, of fulfilment is really strong in my life this year. This album is a big example of that, and Tom and Hereward and myself getting up on stage together at the troubadour, and being in the studio together looking into each others eyes, listening to each other, singing together, is deeply wonderful for me.
HR : You’ve said recently, that the recording process took the magic out of the music in the early days, so what has changed for you with this solo record?
RD : The heart went out of the music in the recording process in the 70s for us because it was an artificial environment and a rather autocratic structure. Music is about musicians sharing from their souls together, and that sharing combining, meeting in the air and combining into something extra. That just can't happen in a compartmentalised and splintered and structured and often rather heartless recording process. It's not always like that of course, but too often it has been. We need to get back to the magic of creativity. With this album it's very different. I suppose it's not too strong to say that this album is an act of love. And everybody involved in it is acting with creative integrity and with mutual regard. It's a great thing to be part of.
HR : What was your inspiration for putting these songs together, now?
RD : Back in the spring I noticed that I couldn't grip the plectrum when I was playing the guitar. That led me to check some things out, and I was diagnosed with motor neuron disease in April. I've had a good long summer since my diagnosis, holding the condition at arms length, and it's been great - But it is increasingly something that I am living with day by day so it is a big part of the reality of this stage of my life, and will only continue to be so, and more so ... So it's true to say that all this has come about in response to my diagnosis: Tom and my son Louis started looking at the songs that had never really seen the light of day, and talking about making an album - they were both very much spurred on to bring this about with me because time is an issue.  I wasn't sure  ... I certainly didn't want to make an album just for the sake of it. I wanted it to exist primarily as a piece of work in its own right, and have not wanted my health issue to be a dominant factor in what I've been doing - but the reality and beauty and urgency of this project has come about in trying to get these tracks down while it is still possible. Every stage of this process, of building this album, has been full of surprises.  It's incredibly alive. It's the story of a life. And it's a great collaboration between creative artists - not just me, but Louis, the brilliant Gerry Diver, Tom and everyone who's contributed..
HR : As you say there, the album also features your son Louis - what does it mean to you to be able to have this creative relationship with him, and your other children?
RD : It's been brilliant doing this with Louis. I always say he outstripped me musically a long time ago. The work he's done, from his early band the Cadets, to Slides, and now the Spare Room is often amazing. When he and I started looking at the songs for this album we started to get some of those shivery moments, like I used to get rehearsing in the cellar in Clapham with cafe society. I remember the rehearsal before the troubadour, we got the band together at the Music Room in New Cross and I had Louis on one side of me and my other son Jess on bass guitar on the other side, and we were all blasting out harmonies and it was like something in me just took off and flew up into the air. To be doing this together, at The Troubadour, and in the studio, and at such a wonderful high standard, is something that it's hard to explain. It's just beautiful.
HR : When are you hoping for it to be released?
RD : We are making the album with crowd funding - pledge music - so people are pre-ordering their copies and that helps pay for the cost of making it. The aim is to release it in January - hopefully on the 6th, my birthday - when I'm 64!
HR : And what can listeners expect? RD : Well, the answer to that changes every week and every time we go back in the studio. It was going to be a good album, but there is all kinds of magic brewing in the cauldron. What can I say. I'm blown away by some of the things we've done. Gerry Diver is doing some extraordinary work on arrangements and production. Louis has written some great music, played brilliant guitar and found lovely musicians and I, I promise you, am singing my heart out. I tell you, I'm a happy man. But there's lots of previews on the PledgeMusic page, with some videos of different songs from the album or the Troubadour - keep watching.   It's at  http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/raphael-doyle-never-closer , and my Facebook page raphaeldoylemusic
https://www.facebook.com/raphaeldoylemusic/?fref=ts
“I Come From Ireland” - a spoken word track is currently claiming worldwide acclaim, having made it to a feature in the Huffington Post!
The album - Songs Of Experience - can be found here http://www.raphaeldoyle.co.uk/
[Sadly Raphael passed away in March 2018. It is with huge thanks to my friend Ian Donald Crockett, that I had the pleasure of knowing Raphael for that short time].

Chapter 4
The happy moment didn’t last long. Tony practically beamed seeing Peter’s shining eyes at the new revelation, and wanted to keep talking to him, keep making Peter happy – but Ben’s voice came barreling through.
“Stark. We’ve gotta talk.”
Tony looked up at him from his kneeling position. “What? Right now?” He gestured to Peter. “Can I just finish -- ?”
“What is there to finish?” said Ben, standing up, looking very unhappy. “You told him – you’re his dad. Now we need to talk.” He jerked his head, indication that Tony needed to follow.
What the actual hell?
What the fuck was wrong with this guy? He was so fucking weird. First he was mean, then he was snarky, then he was pissy. What was his problem? Was he pissed about Tony getting his sister pregnant? Or was he upset at Tony for just showing up at his house?
He didn’t want to fight with this man in front of Peter. Instead, he stood up as well and looked Peter hard in the face saying, “I’ll go talk to him. But I’ll be back, ok?”
Peter looked completely dumbfounded – happy, but dumbfounded. Tony couldn’t blame him. So many things had happened for such a young kid in just a few hours. But, he nodded slowly and whispered to Tony, “Okay. I’ll wait for you.”
Tony crinkled a smile. Fucking cute kid. He couldn’t believe how alike they looked. Except, the kid had a mop of curly hair. That had to be all his mom. Even though it had been so long ago, he still remembered Mary Parker’s long curly hair.
*
Tony’s self-esteem was in the toilet tonight. His form of self-care was to go to the bar, get drunk, and hopefully take a woman home. This bar tonight was nice and loud, with plenty of numbing alcohol to go around. He scanned the room, being conceited and looking for the prettiest girl in the room.
She caught his eye instantly. Her dress was completely backless, legs darkened by tights, and lips a deep red stain. The coiled, thick ringlets in her hair fell past her shoulders. Tony smirked, already knowing what to ask her.
“Is that your natural hair?” He questioned her enticingly, striding forward and amplifying his voice over the club music. She looked up at him from her seat at the bar, eyes widening when she saw who asked the question.
Tony waited for it. The, ‘oh my gosh, you’re Tony Stark!’ and the obvious, desperate flirting that followed. But she surprised him. Instead, she changed her surprised expression in a flash and smiled slightly.
“It is,” the woman answered, tone even. “Real boobs too, if that’s what you were really wondering.” She turned back to her drink.
Tony actually had been wondering. He was going to bring it up in a smoother way than that, but fuck. Maybe women thought that was stupid? Or maybe just this woman. All the others couldn’t stop giggling when he’d asked. ‘Tony Stark thinks I have nice boobs? Oh my gosh I can’t wait to tell my friends!’
He sat down on the stool next to her. “Can I get you a drink? Anything you’d like. I could swing something fancier than what you’ve got there,”
She turned her head and held his gaze. There was something about her eyes. They were stunning, hardened, no-nonsense. “Oh Mr. Stark, trust me,” she took another sip of her drink. “I could get any drink in this place. You think I don’t know why you sat next to me?”
“All right, all right,” Tony held his hands up. Gosh, he was so fucking intrigued how. Sex be damned, (well, no, sex with this woman would probably rock) something in him wanted to ask this girl all about her life, find out what was going on in her head. “I’m sorry. I just –” He let out a laugh. “What’s your name?”
She was still looking him in the eyes. “Mary,”
“Pretty,” Tony said. “I’m – well, you know.” He shrugged.
Mary laughed. “Yes, I do. But I’m sorry, Mr. Stark. I have a boyfriend.”
Psh. Tony didn’t skip a beat. “Is he a good boyfriend?”
Her face darkened. But again, she changed that expression within a second. But Tony was quick. He saw.
“No?” Tony prodded further. Mary’s lips were tightened in a line.
“You’re getting a little too personal here, Mr. Stark.”
“Please. It’s Tony.”
“I prefer Mr. Stark,” She crossed her legs to the other side, so her foot was dangling the other way. “It keeps a distance.”
“Okay Mary,” Tony said. “I don’t want to be a bother, it’s just –” He placed his hand on top of hers gently. She didn’t flinch away. “When’s the last time your boyfriend told you how absolutely stunning you are?”
Mary blinked. Her mouth curved a little and she rolled her eyes. “You’re very predictable, Mr. Stark,”
“I know, I’m boring. I’m not nearly as interesting as people think – but just this one question –”
“Five years,” Mary interrupted, looking at Tony again. “We started dating five years ago, and once he had me as his girlfriend, he stopped telling me I was beautiful.”
It felt like all the breath left Tony’s lungs. He squeezed her hand, which he was still holding. “Well,” Tony choked, feeling horrible. “You are. You’re beautiful. And interesting. And –”
“Do you want to get out of here?” Mary ventured boldly, interrupting Tony again. He didn’t mind the interruption. It was mildly refreshing.
“I mean,” He laughed. “That’s why I came over here, to be honest.”
“No honesty needed. I know.”
“But we don’t have to do that,” He told her quickly. Something about this girl – he didn’t know. He didn’t want to be just one of those guys to her. “We can go get something to eat, um, go to central park. I um –” He thought frantically. What would impress her? “I have a private jet, ya know, if there’s ever somewhere in the world you’ve wanted to go –”
Mary coughed up some of her drink she’d been taking another sip of. “What?” She said, looking bewildered. “What the hell? You can’t be serious.”
Tony grinned at her. “I am. Why not? What the hell else do I have to do?”
Mary’s eyes sparkled. “Uh, yeah. Yes. Okay.” She sat up a little. “I have something in mind.”
Tony followed Ben into the kitchen. He still couldn’t quite pinpoint what the deal was with this guy. While Mary had been so likable and genuine, her brother seemed to just be – a bit of a loser.
Ben rounded on Tony quickly. “Listen here, Stark,”
“Listening,” Tony shot back in a sing-song voice.
That earned a glare from Ben. “I don’t know who you think you are just walking in here, fucking uninvited –”
“Okay, seriously? If Peter hadn’t almost gotten kidnapped today, all this would have happened very differently. But we don’t exactly have time for that. There’s people after him – I didn’t even know he existed until they sent threats to my friends –”
“So you’re gonna take him? That’s it? You’re here to take him away?” Ben’s jaw was set.
Tony paused for a moment, baffled. How had he jumped to that conclusion? “What? No, no – “ He thought of Ben’s harsh words towards Peter, the insults. “Do I need to take him away?”
“His mother made me swear I’d take care of him. She didn’t want you for him, she wanted me. He stays here.”
“Okay! I was never planning on taking him away –”
“Fucking bull. You just said –”
“Well I won’t! Okay? I’m here so we can protect him, all right?”
Ben’s face was screwed in anger, but unclenched the fist that had been at his side the entire conversation. “All right. You can do that. But he –”
“Stays here,” Tony finished for him, hiding the hurt swirling inside. “Got it.”
They stood there in stagnant, uncomfortable silence for a few seconds. Tony burned with disappointment, upset at the first meeting with the son he’d never known about. And, the more he thought about it – why hadn’t he known about Peter? Why didn’t Mary at least write him a letter? The time they’d had together – it had been incredible. Wouldn’t she have wanted Tony in Peter’s life? Why was Peter trapped in this craphole anyways?
A horrible thought Tony hadn’t considered entered his thoughts.
“Where is Mary?” Tony asked, burning fear sweltering in his stomach. “Why does Peter live with you?”
Ben didn’t answer right away. He roamed over to the fridge, pulled out a beer, took a long swig of it, and said harshly, “She’s dead. Died years ago.” He then retreated into his room and slammed the door shut.
*
After taking about a minute to be in shock, Tony shakily poked his head back into the apartment’s living room to check on Peter. The kid was slumped on the couch, elbows on knees and head drooped.
“Hey, bud,” Tony said carefully. Peter’s head shot up instantly.
“Mr. Iron – um, Stark! Tony!”
“There ya go, you got it on the last one,” He walked further into the room. “Just Tony,”
Carefully, he sat next to Peter on the couch. Peter picked at the sides of his nails. He didn’t know what to tell him, his own kid. He opened his mouth to say something stupid, but Peter beat him to it.
“So there’s people that want to get me,” Peter said glumly. “That’s why you’re here?”
“There are people that have discovered you’re my son, yes. They want to use you to hurt me.”
Peter kept picking his nails, head back down. “I’m sorry,” He muttered.
“Hey,” Tony put a hand over Peter’s. “Please don’t be – there’s nothing for you to be sorry for. I – I don’t –” He let out a big puff of air. “I’m going to be honest here, kid. I don’t really know what I’m doing. This situation, I don’t –”
“This… situation?” Peter questioned.
“Yeah, like, having a kid. All this. I don’t know –”
“What do you know?” Peter said, not unkindly. It was a genuine question, a desire to understand Tony’s real intentions, who he was, what he wanted. Tony marveled at the twelve-year-old’s quiet wisdom and maturity. He deserved a real answer.
“I know that –” He paused. “I know that I’m really happy I have a son.”
Peter’s eyes sparkled, just like his mother’s. “You are?” he breathed.
“Yes.” Tony grasped Peter’s hand, so his wasn’t just resting on top. Peter, wonderfully, grasped back. “I know I felt so excited when Rhodey – or War Machine – told me about you. I know I’m – I’m scared that there’s people who know you’re my son. Because a lot of people don’t like me.”
“That’s ok,” Peter assured. “No one really likes me either.”
“Right. Wait. What?”
Tony knew Peter didn’t mean that to be the saddest fucking comment ever, but damn. That was the saddest fucking comment ever.
“Kid, don’t say that. I’m sure lots of people like you.”
“No,” Peter said simply. “I mean, I guess my friend Ned. He likes me. But no one else at school likes me. Or my teachers. Or – or –” He looked sorrowfully at Ben’s closed door.
“Well,” Tony continued on with the earlier question. “I also know that I like you. And – I want us to try and spend some time together. Would you like that?”
“Yes,” Peter answered quickly. “Yes, I would. I’d really like to.”
“It’s a deal, then,” Tony patted Peter on the shoulder. “I should probably head out, I don’t wanna offend your Uncle or anything.”
Something that looked like dread filled Peter’s eyes. Maybe the kid was scared? That would make sense – he had gotten freaking attacked today. “Of course,” Peter said. “That’s – probably smart.”
“But I’ll have someone watching this house, night and day. You’ll be perfectly safe. If anything happens, I can be here in minutes.” Tony stood and pulled Peter up with him. “I promise.”
As Tony was leaving the apartment, he felt a strong desire to hug Peter, wrap him up, get him out of this messy and sad apartment. But who was Tony to know what was best for the kid? He hadn’t been with him for any of his life. How could he be so arrogant to think he’d be any better for Peter?
So he held himself back. But he needed to say something in parting – something that would help Peter know how much he cared.
“I’ll see you soon, bud,” Tony told his son at the door. Peter brushed some hair from his face. “And, well – there’s one more thing I know.” He knelt down one more time so they were eye-level. “If I’d have known about you sooner, I would have been here in a second.”
It was almost impossible to turn around and close the door on Peter’s sweet, awestruck face. Once out in the hall, there was a loneliness inside that he’d never felt. He missed this kid who he hadn’t even known existed a bit ago. Despite what he’d told Ben, he truly did want to take Peter home with him.
Please, Tony thought harshly to himself. He’d hate living with you. You could never take care of a kid.
As he headed outside to see multiple angry texts and missed calls from Rhodey, more dark thoughts filtered into his mind. The darkest being the realization that Ben hadn’t even asked – or cared – when Tony said his nephew had almost been kidnapped today.

Miss Brick House
At nineteen, in 1975, I was selling advertising for the OSU college paper, The Lantern, and submitting stories and getting published in the student “fringe” paper: Our Choking Times. The one where I won their respect as a budding radical, then went flying over the lines of professionalism to date Gil Scott-Heron.
I not only wrote about the older and otherworldly genius radical rapper, I threw caution in my hometown wind, hit the road with him, and well, you know. Ditching college for nearly a week, I boarded a tour bus with Gil, soaking up his celebrity and smiling a smug smile, when other girls stared with hungry eyes. Mostly I watched him read and read and read.
Now I knew why his lyrics were so intriguing. He devoured news magazines and books, speed-reading, thoughts on fire. I tried to be ready with an intelligent comment or witticism, while keeping the goal of my article in mind.
“I like talking to you,” he once said approvingly, eyes smiling as he looked up from U.S. News and World Report. And well my heart did little flips as the bus clipped along.
In 1976, I would have flashbacks of our recent time together: Gil, handsome, angular-faced and charmingly disheveled sat backwards on a chair across from me, as I lay robed in his hotel bed and dreamily drank wine. He enthusiastically entertained his enraptured audience of one. I alternated between laughter and awe, as he tossed off brilliant dialogue and humor with an upturned finger, woven in with his trademark political rhapsody and a wacked, uncombed, uncared-about afro.
My merriment only slightly dimmed by an shadowy sense of foreboding when Gil made a point of taking frequent “artistic time-outs” to do copious lines of cocaine from an album cover on The Holiday Inn hotel dresser. Credit to him, he didn’t corrupt me with his coke, which I had turned down the first day. I was still terrified by cocaine–then. And he let me stay happily “in my cups”, replenishing my drink stash at every rest stop. Back in that day, a man who never let my drink run out, was the epitome of a gentleman to me, which made it hard to focus on diamonds and more upscale amenities.
Wrenching myself away from that rendezvous for a season, I became the sometimes-faux, oft-times truly-dedicated student again and dove into my college classes for another year or so.
Mostly I wrote from the soul, without getting intimately involved–all in preparation for my coming career in broadcast journalism. That is until I got sidetracked again, but by this time I was twenty-one. Hey, I was grown! But my grown self was running a semester behind my scheduled graduation date. My degree had to wait for spells of heavy drinking, the local party scene and manic depression hovering in the wings.
At least school was out for a season, because it was the smoking-hot Summer of 77″!! A friend of a friend, a concert promoter, borderline dirty old man. (he was late 40’s which at 21 seemed pretty ancient.) This guy submitted my name to a contest, then told my friend that I’d be perfect with some coaching and could probably win.
It was a beauty contest, but sort of an invented one for publicity to launch Lionel Richie and The Commodores’ concert tour and promote the hit record du jour. The song soaring up the charts was “Brick House”–helping to make The Commodores one of Motown’s hottest groups. The contest was for Miss Columbus (Ohio) Brick House.
The winner at the national level it was promised, would also snag a movie role with the exceedingly cool, Billy Dee Williams in his next movie. I was jazzed beyond rhythm-and-blues. Fifteen girls competed at “Ciro’s”, the popular Columbus dance club, sort of Miss America style, in swimsuits and heels and then revealed their “intellect” or “wit” when asked a serious question.
To be honest, there was a girl who was a Brick House bombshell, with a sensational eye-popping figure, judging by the collective stares of the men in the audience, but the dear bombshell appeared dumb as a bag of hammers! (She wasn’t, just shy.) I was pretty adept at stringing a sentence together, and she fumbled over her name. Since they wanted a kind of spokesmodel winner, I won.
Sandi, the Bombshell, became the runner-up and we became fast friends, because at that point, The Commodore’s management closed down the contest and picked the two of us to go on Tour with the group.
We won gift certificates and free travel, limo rides, meals, money for clothes. We stood behind barricades in record stores in swimsuits, high heels and fake furs and signed autographs, along with The Commodores. I always wore a pair of slacks over my swimsuits in public when offstage, because I didn’t want to look sluttish. I was actually aiming for something sophisticated, sexy and upscale. Years later, Beyonce’ pulled it off.
Sandi and I roomed together, giggled, gossiped and drank champagne while we traveled to Philadelphia, Hartford, Connecticut, Boston, and made a pit stop in Dayton before the tour was to have a huge concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
It was at a packed arena in Philadelphia that I was “crowned” the official stage dancer on tour and I was ecstatic to be onstage with Lionel Richie and The Commodores.
“She’s a Brick House–she’s mighty, mighty!” they sung in snug, glittering military-style suits–a vision for testosterone-deprived eyes. And I’d do a wham-bam funky yet feminine, hip thrust as I wound my provocative dance to position myself in between Lionel Richie and William King.
“A-A-O-O-W”, I would think while William Orange actually sang it.
I was developing a serious crush on Lionel, but would try to reign it in whenever his pretty wife, Brenda, stage left, arms folded, looked at us, sullen from the sidelines. I was told by the road manager, she had been doing that for the last two years, but now it seemed definitely directed at me. That angst and heady excitement became a combustible mix that changed the show’s routine it seemed during one concert.
The routine was that Sandi would dance solo from stage right and I’d dance solo from stage left. Once during a concert the air charged with anti-matter, the routine was interrupted at the pit stop in Dayton. There was a rustling, a din, and then complete clamor and chaos.
Suddenly a “boo” erupted from the back. What had started as a tiny disturbance, quickly became something monstrous. 10,000 people packed in the arena began booing in a huge roar for almost a full, tortuous minute.
I was mortified, spinning dizzily as I finally stumbled offstage when the song was over, almost tripping over my sky-high heels. Try hiding wearing a neon-orange bathing suit. I ran into a photographer who was stage side, who became one of my best friends over the years.
“Why did they boo?” I broke out in little-girl sobs, heaving in-between blurted words, “I was thinking I did my best Chaka Khan dance moves,”
“I was in the back of the arena earlier,” Chuckie laughed, “and I heard a loud, crazy protest, people complaining—Miss Brick House is white! Miss Brick House is white!”. Then everyone started booing, not even knowing why they were booing,” he said. “Just really stupid.”
“But I’m not white!” I wailed, “I’m a black woman, a light-skinned black woman.” (African-American was not yet in vogue.)
“Oh, of course I can see that,” said Chuckie, “but wa-a-ay in the back with bright lights washing out your skin tone and the fact that you sometimes wear that straightened Farrah Fawcett-looking hairdo—well, I guess they just couldn’t tell.” Tears of laughter brimmed Chuckie’s eyes and he wiped them away with his knuckles.
I found it hard to laugh with him or even chuckle. To be booed by 10,000 people in a roar of disapproval back then, made me wish the earth would quake, open up and consume me quickly, no matter what the reason.
The next morning on the road again, I had washed and curled and frizzed my hair, letting it dry naturally. But I continued to whimper about the night before. Yet it seemed to disturb nobody but me, which I found amazing. I thought they would send me home. Then I remembered the performer’s mantra:
“The show must go on.”
I also thought of Lionel Richie’s smile. Did I care he was married? Only when I examined his wife’s face did I feel a wave of guilt. She seemed so unhappy about the nightly crush of women. Yet I wasn’t a groupie, I sniffed to myself. ‘Hey, I’m Miss Brick House! I’m not only with the band, I’m in the show!’
That sense of entitlement combined with the bitter-sweetness of an early hallway smile beamed in my direction. And light conversation between Lionel and me–and I only cared for my own selfish joy.
That summed up a 21-year old woman-child, with a dusty Bible and a neon orange bathing suit strutting nightly onstage with a supergroup, led by a friendly, incredibly talented, rich and famous man. I was dancing a dream and anything seemed possible. And so I danced.

Open Your Eyes
So I lied in that post, about the reason why I came here. Not entirely mind you, I just pre-emptively tried to write something about my entire time here before finishing learning what I came here to learn.
I came here for spiritual awakening. It took me a long time to realize exactly what it was I was going through, but upon doing some research and a little bit of self reflection, I’ve fully realized this is something I’m currently living through. It feels like second puberty to some extent.
I feel as if a weight has been lifted from my chest, and I can finally start making sense of the things I’ve been experiencing, trying to tie it all together like it made sense. Turns out, its made sense this whole time, its all had this common theme the entire time, I just wasn’t sure how to tie it all together.
I’ve felt alone, despite being surrounded by others. I’ve felt alone for such a long time, despite having amazing friends at home. I feel as if no one cares to the full extent that I do, I’ve struggled for a long time to find people, whither platonic or romantic, that are in love with life and humans and the world as much as I am.
It breaks my heart to see certain people as unhappy as they are, knowing just how in love with life I am. I see people so jaded and bitter and hurt by the world, and I just can't relate to them. I try, I try to hard to relate and be helpful and compassionate, but no matter how hard I try I just know I’m in such a far off head space than they are, and they want nothing to do with me. They want to sit with other negative, narrow minded, shallow people and complain about their 9-5 jobs, make their shitty meals for dinner, and watch family guy before going to bed at a reasonable hour.
I want to create beautiful things and have real conversation and run around in the dirt and get excited. I want to spend my time doing things that matter, I want to look back on my life and feel absolutely no regrets. I want to bleed passion and drive and inspiration. I want to inspire people everywhere I go. I want to leave a lasting impression on people as someone who cares, someone who is compassionate and genuinely interested in your life.
Ever since I can remember, literally my entire life, I’ve never been able to say I’ve had a best friend. I’ve never had anyone in my life who has called me their best friend in a serious sense. Its been so hard for me to find people I truly connect with on such a level, mentalities on the world and on human beings and whatnot. So rarely do I find people with such levels of stoke as my own. People so aggressively ready to be in a good mood, to inspire others, who care as much as myself.
The people here are wonderful, please by no means get me wrong. They identify my authenticity, and appreciate me. They tell me they’re glad to have met me, that I’m an interesting person, that I’m appreciated, and it feels incredible.
But I’ve yet to connect with someone here on such a level. All I want is to sit in the forest and talk about how the trees invigorate our spirits and recharge our blood, letting the pulse of the earth vibrate through our bare feet.
I’ve been alone instead. My gut took me on a six hour hike to the top of a mountain yesterday, which in of its own was an incredible experience.
I’d gone against my mother for one of the first real times in my life, and really got to reflect on it. I’ve yet to really talk about it with her and it still breaks my heart that she probably doesn't have the gusto to start the conversation. Its brought to light the types of relationships I have with my family, which is personal but not really personal at all.
I’m very glad I got to come to this experience of waking up on my own, despite literally having no exposure to religion or spirituality really in my life by any means. I know nothing, literally nothing. But here I am anyways, I’m on my path now, and I’m curious to see where this chapter of my life takes me.
I told Jordan about my night, upon getting chills before goosebumps before bursting into tears on my bed.
Like I said I had no idea this is what was pulling me here, but I know for a fact I’m always going to have a tie here for the rest of my life. I really did create myself here. I know I have much more reflecting to do before I come across anything concrete, but I feel like I’ve taken astronomical strides today. I’ve realized the true journey and the path I’m on my way to discovering. I just need to sit and pinpoint and reflect on each and everything I’ve been feeling and tuning into. Which I know is going to be a lot of work, but I look forward to the satisfaction I will feel after it is said and done.
I need to start to sew it all together so it makes sense. I need to start to develop purpose, to begin to get some clarity before I must begin the process of closure before I have to go home and REALLY start to make sense of all this.
But literally, everything I read or learned made sense. I am literally a textbook example of symptoms of spiritual awakening, its not even funny.
I’ve realized what's important to me, what is not, what I have no time for.
I’ve realized what lights fire within me, and to stay close to things that make me feel glad to be alive.
I feel like an asshole for saying I’m above other people, but I know I’ve reached a higher understanding that others are by no means at. I know I’ve always had a different perspective, I’ve always felt like I’m on a different wavelength than others.
I got restless at home, it was like something bit me, and I had to get out of Ottawa. I’d hit a plateau, and I was sick of the way of thinking that the city had my head stuck in. I needed to see something new, I needed a perspective change. I’d felt a pull to the mountains.
I’ve gotten increasingly excited about the concept of pruning my friends, gauging who was worth my time, who I really had connection with and whom I value most dear to me.
I’ve felt the physical change within myself, and I feel the light I’ve been omitting through the last few weeks of being present here.
I’ve felt such desire to change my diet and go back to the vegi lifestyle. Alongside with an increased sensory input to nature and animals, I’m very keen to make strides towards going vegan again. I yearn for that connection to the planet and to animals like I once had.
I’ve found myself repelled by screens and technology to certain extents. I find television and movies a waste of time, and would rather be watching something that is going to be bettering myself if I’m going to be watching anything at all.
I’ve tuned into more patterns and coincidences, watching the synchronicities of the world unfold in front of me. Seeing themes come to me in different forms.
I’ve become more self aware, trying to listen to my body, listening to the signs its been giving me, trying to give it what it wants.
The pulls I’ve felt to be outside have been shaping my day to day. There are so few places I can go on my own here, that I have found such solitude within the trees. Spending time in nature has come to be something so important to staying sane. Solitude has also played an enormous part in my time here.
I’ve been surrounded by people but have felt more alone than I’ve ever felt. I’ve pulled away from groups to spend time alone, reflecting on myself and trying to better myself. I feel like the small talk I have with people here is not worth my time or energy. I could be using my time more efficiently by myself than with people that do not value enough to put in the sheer amount of energy it takes to have good conversations.
I’ve found myself so extroverted in the past, and now there is little I want more than social interaction. All conversations I have seem shallow and meaningless. I’ve realized how few people are comfortable talking about passion, emotions, meaning and the soul. I feel restless in conversations and irritated by small talk. This only pulls me more into solitude. I am above your petty complaints about your day, tell me something real, please, I’m starved for real connection.
I’ve felt my mood swings flip at the absolute drop of a hat, being able to instantly switch from a depressive episode to alive and alert and ready for the world. I literally went from sitting at the table sipping tea, feeling sorry for myself, to racing for the door to change into my boots, to hike up to the forest line to watch the sun set the other night.
I’ve come far when it comes to embracing change, and trying my best to learn to roll with the punches. Letting stress not get the better of me, trying my hardest to stay mellow and calm as much as I can.
I’m horrified of wasting my time, of putting energy and effort into people and activities that are not worth it. My gauge for good people has heightened, and I’m instantly pushed away by toxic people and unnecessary drama.
I’ve been on this whole journey with simplicity, and appreciating simple living, embracing any chance I have to be bored. To accept the cards drawn and do my best to enjoy things I cannot change.
I’ve fostered such a connection to the earth, and it reaches a point now where I find myself restless and antsy to take off my shoes and sit in the dirt. Watching the forest breathe has become my favourite show to watch in the morning. I’ve come to learn the benefits my body has taken from being so grounded since coming here, how little I really wear shoes, and how happy I am when my feet are stained black and caked with earth.
My sleep patterns have moved drastically. I went from sleeping constantly, being permanently tired, staying in bed up until the hour before I had to leave for work. To now waking up alert and awake, even if I know I didn’t get enough sleep. I’m awake and keen to start my mornings, appreciating the time I have in the beginning of the day for myself.
I reached a point with self exploration that I assigned a character to my anxiety. I know exactly the form it takes and the affects it has on me, I’ve gotten to learn a lot about the darkness that has the ability to take over me if I’m not careful. There have been a few days here for sure that I have found myself succumbing to the twisted being that lives in the shadows of my chest, feeding on my insecurities. But I know when she flourishes, I know what draws her out, and I know how to hide from her.
I wake up itchy and anxious for meaning and purpose. I’ve been trying so hard to force everything to make sense, I’ve wanted to piece it all together for so long now, and now that its finally all starting to make sense I’m flowing with positive currents.
I began to realize that a lot of what I’d been taught was a lie. This is what first sent me off the edge last night, bursting into tears after my whole body erupting with goosebumps.
I’ve been on a journey finding my own way of life, approaching a more alternative lifestyle, living a more natural and fulfilling life. I’d grown to realize that I don’t have to work a standard 9-5 job if I don’t want to. I can live off the grid, and I can raise free range children if I so choose to. I’m above the American dream, I know there is more to life than a mortgage and children in public school and a husband who makes six figures and vacationing in Aruba with my inlaws every Christmas.
I started to realize how many beliefs, ideals, and values are not actually my own, but have been taught to me by society, education, and the people I spend time with. I’m tired of having to try to fit into a cookie cutter I know I’m not meant to squeeze into.
I’ve seen right through the illusions of society. I know what is and is not important. I’m above materialistic crap, the things I find value in are so much more important than staying on trend. I’m over feeling like a cog in society.
I see how unhappy most people are, I feel like I’ve woken up to the sadness and suffering of others. Its begun to torment me how much pain there is in the world and little I can do about it. I want to always be someone’s ray of sunshine. I will teach you to be alive and pure and excited for life. For she loves human beings with all of her heart. I feel empathy an compassion for others, so much to the extent that I find it hard to cope with the intensity of my feelings.
Mona was the first person I realized the unhappiness within. As much as I disliked her at work, I felt deep empathy for her. I could pinpoint all the things wrong, all the things she had to be angry about. She takes out her frustration on the people she works with, but she still did nothing to change her life. That is where my disrespect for her comes from, she visibly hates all aspects of her life and is so mad with the world, but does nothing to make a difference.
I’m thirsty for authenticity, being true to myself has taken priority in all aspects of my own life. I’m pulled to people that wear their heart on their sleeve, who put it all out there from the get go. People who put on societal or situational masks to please others I have absolutely no time for.
I’ve come not to care to want to impress absolutely anyone. This is me. I’m going to wear obscure layers over each other and not shower for days and still feel cute, because I’m not trying to impress you or anyone. I’ve spent way too much time worrying about what other people think of me, while they’re really are too busy thinking about themselves to give less of a shit.
I deeply want to understand who I am, I’m full of questions for the world and for myself. Why was I born? What am I here to do? To learn? To Exist?
I’ve really grown to trust my gut, and I’ve tuned into the fact that coincidences mean I’m going in the right direction. Humans are wired to notice patterns, to connect like things, and to try to make sense of it all. I’ve noticed more synchronicity in my life, the world is giving me pushes in the right directions for sure.
I’m so full of wonder and curiosity lately, I’m so full of bliss and joy, the smallest things make me feel radiant. Life is no longer ignored, it is seen as magical, amazing, and beautiful.
I’ve lost interest in drama, conflict, or anything that perpetuates hatred.
I feel connectivity everywhere. Each and every one of us contributes to the concept of “human beings”, whither those people be good or bad, they’re still adding to the greater collective.
Practice compassion, live simply, feel for others. Go outside, read a book. Drink some water, ask someone you admire a thought provoking question.
I’ve found myself becoming more present, trying to appreciate the growing quiet within me. It comes down to the enjoyment of inactivity, is the ability to simply be. I’ve been throwing this under the title “simple living” since I first got here.
I’ve realized how important gratitude and appreciation are to me, and they very much a pillar for the virtues that matter most.
My perceptions of time and surrounding time have been completely shifted. Where as I used to be perpetually anxious about being too late or too early, now I find myself hardly caring what time it is. I sleep when I’m tired, I wake when I’m rested and ready to start the day. I’ve stopped wearing a watch altogether. And the only thing I need to know the time for is to make sure I get to work on schedule.
I very much look forward to coming home, and reveling in not having a job awhile, so I can allow my perceptions of time to melt away even further.
I’ve noticed my short-term memory fading, as I stop paying attention to things in the past as opposed to living in the now. I appreciate moments as they come, and of course I try to hold on to them to look back fondly. But as wonderful as the past is, you can’t allow yourself to stay there. Time moves forward, and all we have to get excited about are the things that are yet to come.
I spent the first month I was here incredibly sick, fighting with stress, trying to adjust to my new life and new surroundings. My immune system was weak, my mind was a mess, my emotions were running ramped. I had no idea what I was doing here, what I was going to learn from the people I had to spend the rest of the season with. All I knew was I felt the need to be jere, and it took me a few weeks of settling in for me to realize that I hadn’t made a huge mistake in coming here in the first place.
I don’t yet know what I’m going to do with this understanding. Where I’m going to take all the learning I’ve done, which direction I choose to go.
But I’ve made a step in the right direction, I know I’m on a path of some sort now. Its all slowly coming together, piece at a time, it will all fit in the end.
I’ve reached a level of clarity, and I know I need to continue to listen to myself and my body over my last few weeks here.
I know there is sufficiently more for me to still learn, but I feel as if I’m awake and susceptible to it now. I’m ready to be thrown what’s to come next.
I think back to last night, and I try to re live exactly what happened after I got off Skype with Jordan, but I know it’s a blur.
I was restless and antsy and frustrated with myself for still not being able to put together all the aspects of the writing I’ve done and the things I’ve learned.
And then I wasn’t, there was a lift, and I laid in bed with all sense of anxiousness and stress lifted from me. I laid on my back in the darkness the calmest I have been in years, feeling completely at peace with myself.
I don’t exactly know what I did to fall into the string of thinking that brought me to the understanding I woke up in today. Maybe I’d worked hard enough for it, or maybe it was just my turn.
Regardless, I’m happy to have made it to the headspace I’m currently at. My mind in calm, quiet, and warm. Very little could get under my skin today, I’m kept comfortable by a warm glow that has settled in within my chest.
As much as it feels like I’m coming to the end of a journey, I know the true adventure lies next.
I look forward to the days I can keep adding to this story, for I know that more than anything, I want nothing more than to look back on my life and expel a sigh of relief.
This is a good life she lives, and she is full aware of it. I’m thankful for absolutely everyone and everything that has contributed to me at this point in my life.
I’m thankful for every good day, and every off day that have both given me something to think about. Every sunset and sunrise I get the pleasure of seeing. Every morning I get to wake up and star into the eyes of the man who holds my heart. Any evening I get to spend around family and friends. Any good book I get the chance to read, or any new meal I get the chance to try my hand at cooking.
I’m so unbelievably and painfully blessed to have been given the gift of this life I’ve built for myself. I will not take this life for granted.
I am so in love with being alive.
I am so in love with being alive.

My Dear Friend,
Be honest with yourself. . .
Like me, you are probably Afraid you are developing gray hair too early in life
…It’s making you LOOK MUCH OLDER, and more importantly, FEEL MUCH OLDER…
And worse yet, it is affecting your CONFIDENCE, your LOVE LIFE, and maybe even Your ABILITY TO GET A JOB.
In today’s competitive world, Gray Hair is a DISADVANTAGE you don’t need.
I struggled with all of the above for over five years!…..I couldn’t find a job, was a loser in the dating scene, and worst of all, I felt like I was too old to compete with people younger than me.
I was tired of using hair dyes…not only because they were TOXIC but also, after it wore off my hair looked even MORE gray than before….
“I Was a Non-Believer At First”
Joseph,
I embarked on my search for a good program to reducing and reversing gray hair to recommend to my clients…I’m so glad I found your E-Book! I had been looking for months for something like this. I was a non-believer at first, but I really liked the fact that it’s so easy to do. I tried it myself and am happy to say I noticed stunning results after just a few months. My gray hair started diminishing and my hair looks GREAT!Thanks for all the help.
Michael Jersi Owner, Jersi Salon, Beverly Hills
I wanted to Break Free of the Trap that chemical hair dyes had on my life. Not only because of their toxicity, but also because…
In 2004, Scientific Studies Showed Hair Dyes cause BLOOD CANCER
You can read more about the study here – a Web MD summary article.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! I may be a foolish guinea pig, but I would never use anything KNOWING it’s going to cause cancer.
I wanted a NATURAL and SAFE alternative
I Was About to Settle For My Aging Appearance
Believe it or not, 2 years ago, I was about to just accept my aging appearance as the inevitable work of time! I looked everywhere but couldn’t find the information, let alone the solution I needed.
First, I scoured local health food stores and the internet for products that looked good…and literally tried them ALL…like a human guinea pig.
I found that none of them worked effectively over the long term. It was very frustrating!
“Darker, Fuller, Healthier Hair…in 3 months”
I just got done reading the book you wrote. It was very well written, very informative, and everything you said was direct, to the point, not complicated to understand, and very professional. It was short and sweet. I put the program to work immediately upon receiving it and have noticed much darker, fuller, healthier hair in just a matter of 3 months. I have since recommended it to family not clients since that would be taking away my business!! Tommy Mizrahi Owner – Rust Hair Salon Los Angeles, CA
Back to top
…Fast Forward One Year…
I did not give up! You might say I did “extreme” research.
Through a connection with a former boss, I actually got to interview a retired PhD chemist who had worked for a large French beauty products company.
My source had done a lot of research, on his own, about natural treatments for reversing gray hair.
What he told me was shocking!
It turns out that he not only knew about natural treatments to reverse gray hair, but also,…
“…Never shared it with his bosses because he knew they wouldn’t like it – it was not a money maker”
Well, as you can imagine, I was eager to get his formula, which I was eventually able to pry out of him.
I was not sure I believed it until…I tried it for myself and discovered it really does work.
My Friends – IT’S TRUE . . .
But you don’t have to take my word for it…read the numerous testimonials of people who have shared their success stories with me!
Success Story
Dear Joe,
I just wanted to let you know that after 3 months on your program, I couldn’t be more happy with the results. My wife seeing how happy I am is elated herself. Believe it or not, our marriage has become stronger in part because of you! Needless to say, I am very happy with the results.
Thanks!

Thanks!

My Friends – IT’S TRUE . . .

Hi!
At only 27 years old I started going gray Quickly. I really didn’t want to start coloring my hair. I turned to the web for answers and voila! the first site I landed on was ReversingtheGray.com – I was a bit skeptical at first, but you offer a money back guarantee that I couldn’t pass up. It was the best investment of my life. I’ve paid for this manual 1000 times over with the amount I save not coloring my hair at a salon.
Thanks!

This book was extremely helpful. Reversing the Gray, is an honest, heartfelt guide that addresses many concerns that we gen x’ers have about our hair color. I can honestly say that this is the only book of its kind. I saw my few gray hairs fill in with my previous color at around the two month mark
Thanks!
