Giuseppe and Rosa moved from Milan, Italy to Florida, USA in 1977 with their two children, Matteo and Alexander. The couple had Pietro a couple of years later. 

VALENTINI - THOMPSON

Matteo was the first brother to get married with the beautiful journalist Casey Thompson. When the triplets were five years old, Casey asked for a divorce and she didn’t wanted to have contact with the kids anymore. 

KWON 

After an one-night stand, Hyebin got pregnant and went back to Busan to have her baby, Moon. With hopes of getting married with the father of her daughter, both moved to Florida, USA in 1988.

ALEXANDER VALENTINI (Alex/Dad)

Born on January 4, 1973 in Milan (Italy). He is a graphic designer and the second son of Giuseppe and Rosa. His family moved to Florida when he was four years old and he met his wife Moon in high school.

KWON MOON (Mom)

Daughter of a former American soldier and a South Korean civilian, she was born in Busan on June 11, 1973. Her mother took her to the United States hoping to find her baby’s father. Hyebin and Moon settled in Florida when the girl was fifteen. She met her future husband in high school and graduated in Chemistry in college, hoping to create her own line of cosmetics. 

LIAM MATTEO VALENTINI KWON

JYP Entertainment did their best to promote their new soloist and even before her debut, Naya participated in several photo shoots for magazines and personal disclosures, bringing the public to the Trainee’s Showcase. 

To promote herself, she agreed with her agency to record Mariah Carey’s “Emotions” and upload it to her Soundcloud user, promoted by her company to get the public’s attention with her whistle-tones. Indeed, she received a lot of attention, being in the TOP 5 of Naver’s search engine.

She knew that in exactly sixty minutes, a year would be complete. The girl’s brown orbs were almost wide open, fixed on the two flashing red dots that marked the time on her digital clock by the bed. Even turned around, she still could feel her twin sister’s gaze on her back, penetrating her ribs, as a signal that she was also aware of the approaching date in three thousand six hundred seconds. 

If you have been through this, you will surely recognize every following word: denial, anger, negotiation, depression, acceptance. Although death is the only certainty of all mankind, no one is ever prepared to go through emotional grief. The intense pain, the feeling of revolt, the deep emptiness. The whole family was aware of all these emotions.

Exactly a year ago, Naya Valentini and her family had lost two members of their family tree. Under her precise social perception, her favorite uncle and her little cousin. Matteo Valentini was that uncle that, no matter what, made the day better. He was the life of family reunions, and after his divorce, he seemed to be doing better than anyone else in this world. On that afternoon, in July 2010, he had taken his triplets Max, Graham and Sophie to the movies. Everyone was excited, talking about the premiere of Despicable Me. What no one knew was that when they were coming back home, tragedy awaited them. The white van hit the driver’s entire side, including the back part, where Sophie was.

When Naya’s parents arrived at the hospital after being notified, the news that Matteo had died on the spot frightened them at the thought of the possible death of the children. Luckily, the boys would recover quickly, but Sophie had been rushed to the operation room. Naya wasn’t with them, in fact, she and her other siblings had been left behind to take care of the new foster son of the family, who was a newborn. 

At home, everything was in chaos, and she still remembered the whole scene, which her brain insisted on showing in slow motion: her oldest brother Liam trying to stop Autie from shouting that she wanted to go to the hospital to see her cousins, Ethan almost blowing up the microwave while preparing something to eat, while she was trying to finish helping Devyn out in the bath, but hearing the baby crying wasn’t helping much.

With their parents out of the house and the dread of the idea of their cousins and uncle involved in an accident, the four eldest kids Liam, Ethan, Naya and Lexi were able (with a lot of effort) to bring the heavy mattresses downstairs where they had decided to spend the night together, with the strategy of gathering the younger ones on the same space so they could keep a better eye on them. It was dawn when their father arrived, finding all his children on his living room floor, sleeping, except for Lexi, who was giving Joey baby formula. Naya still remembered waking up and how her father had tried to be as gentle as possible telling them that Uncle Matt and Sophie had passed away. 

— I can’t sleep either. — Naya heard her sister’s voice over her shoulder.

And in that simple sentence, it was possible to feel the weight. They both knew how hard it had been for the whole family, especially for their father, who had just lost his favorite brother. The situation was ten times worse when he entered the fourth and most difficult stage of grief: depression. Mornings at the kitchen table, once animated by the children’s conversations, suddenly became quieter and quieter. Dad had just recovered from the last phase, acceptance, and the one-year anniversary had already arrived. 

Another person who was suffering a lot was Moon, Naya and her brothers mom. She had an extremely maternal relationship with the triplets, especially after her brother-in-law’s divorce, where their mother decided to abandon them. Sometimes, it even seemed like she was grieving more than Alexander, her husband and Matteo’s brother. 

— What do you think will happen today? — Lexi asked, but it was the silence that greeted her. — I just hope mom doesn’t freak out. Dad’s fine now, but her…

Naya turned to her twin sister’s side, tugging at the blanket, realizing for the first time that night that they were laying in the same position. 

— She won’t. She is a force of nature. — And there was definitely a very strong degree of intensity and precision in Naya’s response. Her mother really as a very inspiring woman, starting with her life story. 

Kwon Moon never had any contact with her biological father, the only thing she knew was that he was part of the USFK, the American Forces of Korea. After a one night stand, her mother eventually returned to Busan, where Moon was born and they moved to the United States when she was 15 years old, just because of her mother, deluded with life in a foreign country and hopes to marry her daughter’s father. They didn’t find him, and spent a good time in cheap hotel rooms. 

Moon was the one who decided to go to school and learn as much English as she could, teaching her mother in the spare time of her first job. Years later, she went to college and became pregnant, resulting in marriage to her boyfriend. Still studying, even in a distance program, as her children were born, never for a second of her life did she give up the dream of creating her own line of products in Beaufort, deciding to move to Los Angeles to finally open her store and put into practice what she learned with her chemistry degree. 

Nowadays, mom had two stores in Southern California, and she was doing her best every day, always encouraging her children to do the same. Today would also be a day without school. The family would visit Matteo Valentini and his daughter’s grave.

— Do you think about Sophie? — This time it was Naya who broke the moment of reflection. 

— Honestly? — Lexi turned up, staring at the ceiling before moving on. — Not anymore. Of course I miss her. It must be much worse for the boys, I can’t even imagine what would be like to lose you. 

After the accident, Max and Graham were living with the Valentini-Kwon’s family, as their mother didn’t show up and they didn’t have anyone besides Alex and Moon to take care of them. 

— How about you?

— I’m thinking about her now. — Naya confessed. 

— But that’s because it’s the death anniversary. 

— Yes, but I thought the same thing when dad came home that day and told us everything. Sophie was seven years old. She’s gone without knowing what high school is like, or what it’s like to kiss someone, or drive a car. She never had a chance to live, unlike Uncle Matt. — Naya adjusted a lock of her own hair. — Thinking about it makes me depressed. She could have had the world. 

— Yes. — Lexi’s agreement came in a low voice tone. 

— What about us?

— What do you mean? — Without understanding the question, Lexi frowned.

— What I mean is that… — Naya sat on the bed, the blanket falling on her lap, just as her hair fell over her pajamas. — We can have the world. The question is: what are we doing with our lives?

— Okay, Nay. Relax a little and quit all this philosophy of life for now. Me and you… We’re only sixteen. School things are our biggest concern. — Lexi accompanied the twin on the move, getting up and going to sit on her sister’s bed.

— But that’s the point, Lexi. What if we die? I never did anything I wanted. Sophie was seven years old, didn’t have much she could have done except… Bring some message to our family. — Saying that sounded like the right interpretation. — And it hurts me to say this, but I don’t want to end up like her, Lex. I want to live. I want to decide what I am going to do, to challenge myself more. Because as far as I know, I can die tomorrow, or the day after. I want to be like Uncle Matt, he did everything he wanted.

Alexa seemed to understand the meaning of the conversation, the reason for her sister being so reflective.

— So what do you want to do? — Unrelated to, you know, what we have now. Boyfriend, dancing, friends, apart from all this?

The question took her by surprise. What did Naya want to do with her life? Once she graduated from high school, what would happen? The memory of a little girl came to light when her interest in old movies began to emerge after a summer vacation at her grandparent’s farm. After that, she remembered her godfather and the piano classes, and how he said she had a good voice. Her dream of being a musical actress started from there, together with an entire week spent only watching the famous Broadway plays. She had participated in “13” two years ago and she missed that place. 

Still thinking about her and her sister’s godfather, she wondered if she should believe him. After so many refusals, she wouldn’t have the courage to call him for advice.The way was to try to go through every phase of the challenge, just like what her late cousin would never have the opportunity to do. 

With a smile building up just as a year had passed since the accident, Naya looked at her sister before laying on the bed again.

— What? Why are you smiling? Nay?

— I figured out what I want to do.

— And you won’t tell me?

— You will find out, Lex.

The girl glanced once again at the digital clock, following the moment it had just shown 04:01am, just one minute more than when her cousin had been declared lifeless. However, the only thing she could do was smile. She had understood one of the little girl missions on her short passage through Earth, and hoped the rest could understand soon too. With a lighter heart, Naya whispered before closing her eyes.

— Thank you, Sophie.

→EARLY CAREER

From an early age, Naya had always been interested in theater and music, influenced by her paternal grandparents and godfather. During elementary school in Beaufort (South Carolina), she participated in the plays “Annie”, “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Wizard of Oz”. When her family moved to Orange County in Los Angeles, she starred as Snow White in the stage production “A Snow White Christmas” and she was casted to play Charlotte on “13: The Musical”, which premiered in Los Angeles and transferred to Broadway later. One of her castmates was Tinashe.

Kwon opened an account on the Soundcloud platform, where she posted some covers using the username nayarose17.  As a student from the Commercial Dance Conservatory at OCSA (Orange County School of the Arts), her teachers saw a bright future for her in the musical theater scene, and as she had already participated in a Broadway play, some scouts were already eyeing her. It was a big surprise to everyone when she announced that she was going to South Korea, trading an amazing future career for uncertainty.

Orange County, Southern California - Atlanta, Georgia (USA) 

Typical of the family, during the last two weeks of July, everyone packed their bags to spend the rest of their summer holidays at the Valentini’s farm. At least the teenagers and the kids, since Alex and Moon’s work in LA didn’t allow such a long break. The man’s office rarely took time off, not to mention that the Korean woman couldn’t be out of her job for such a long period, she’s the boss. At least they got a weekend and the couple used the two days to take everyone to Atlanta.

When they lived in South Carolina, right next to Georgia, they used to take a road trip, in one of those SUVs. Now, living on the other side of the country, they needed to make use of the plane, and it is safe to say that it’s not the easiest thing in the world to get eleven tickets. It was the first time they would go there after they moved to California back in 2005, the first time without Uncle Matt or Sophie. Alexander used to take his wife and children and Matteo did the same with the triplets, spending nearly two weeks with the complete family on the farm. 

Naya was a little worried about the amount of money her parents had spent just on this trip. All right, her father came from a very fortunate family, her grandparents would pay their expenses for the rest of the summer and return tickets to Los Angeles, just as her mother had just started to have some success with her company. But sometimes the girl wondered how her parents could handle it: five kids and four adopted, a total of nine mouths to feed. Surely they weren’t easy to maintain.

Well, there would be one less now, since Liam would be moving to the dorms at college campus as soon as they returned. Alex and Moon would financially help their first born until he was settled in and got a job. The rule had been imposed by himself. He was the one who was most excited about this trip, because it would be his last time for a while with his family nearby every day. He was eager to show Nonna the photos of the university, and he was chattering endlessly beside Ethan on the plane, who had sat beside him. Obviously Ethan regretted it. 

Ethan’s plans were completely different from his older brother, who always dreamed of graduation and eventually a spot on an NFL team. As soon as this whole talk of college and scholarship had started at the family’s home, with only a year to decide on his future, he had come to the conclusion that having a degree was not in his plans. Naya wasn’t shocked, because she already knew that, studying in the same place as him. 

He never showed interest in studies, just enough to pass the year without red flags and leave that place for good. He still encouraged the other siblings a lot and even helped the younger ones with homework, but according to him “staying focused at a table with an open book is not for me”.

They didn’t take long to reach the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which didn’t include stopovers. They arrived late in the afternoon and were able to rent two cars to go to the farm. Alex took the road ahead, accompanied in the vehicle by his wife, the twins and Joey. Just behind, Liam drove the SUV with Ethan, Naya, Lexie, Autie and Devyn. 

Liam seemed a little nostalgic to hear his brothers singing “Party Rock Anthem” as if there was no tomorrow. His heart was pounding because he knew he would miss it. Without exception, he had taken care of them all, being the oldest. When his parents were not at home, he was the one who was in charge and tried his best to keep an eye on everyone. Well, Ethan too, for being only a year younger, but he was someone more liberal and Liam used to be the hard one. Either way, he would miss it. Fighting with Ethan when he let the young ones eat candy before dinner, when Naya and Lexi started dating and he had his first jealousy attack related to the girls, of having his nails done by Autie and being dressed like a princess by Dev. Everyone was very close to each other, including their cousins in the other car.

Lost in thought, only then did he notice that his passengers had fallen asleep, then turned down the radio, which played a cheerful and motivating Katy Perry song, and he couldn’t contain a smile. He also would miss the feeling of peace and silence when his siblings were calm or sleeping.

— Is that the reason why you’re going to college?

Liam was surprised to hear Naya’s low voice, sitting just behind the driver’s seat, letting out a “what?” as he put both hands on the wheel.

— This is going to sound stupid, but… Do you believe you’ll get that kind of feeling there? Playing, I mean.

— What feeling? — The question was very confusing for Liam and he glanced at the girl through the rearview mirror.

— From Katy Perry song. Do you believe everything in college will be as if fireworks are exploding?

Oh, so it was the song she was talking about, he didn’t get the reference at first, because he wasn’t really listening to the radio. Anyways, it was something to reflect on.

— Do you want my honest answer?

— Yes.

— I don’t know, Nay. That’s what I like to do. — He followed his father’s left turn onto a dirty road. — But I know fireworks won’t happen when I get a contract, because we can’t be sure about anything. I believe I will be satisfied while I am on my way, surpassing myself. It’s more of a personal accomplishment, you know?

— Is that why you decided to leave home? — Devyn had woken up an was settling in her seat in the back row of the SUV.

— You could say so. — Liam considered Devyn being upset about his answer, but she was soon distracted by Pitbull and Ne-Yo singing and he noticed that Naya was quiet now. — Why do you, Nay?

— I was just thinking…

— About what?

— About what I want to do with my life. — The girl smoothed her hair behind her ear before putting her hands together in her lap and playing with the ring on her finger. — I don’t want to leave what I can do today for tomorrow.

— Is that why you’ve been so reflective lately? — He took one more look in the mirror. He knew his sister’s behavior was different from a few days ago. Naya was always the talkative type, who went out with friends over the first two weeks of vacation, but now he saw her reading information about artists in magazines and noticed she had been playing the guitar again. — And what do you want to do with your life?

Devyn hadn’t lasted long, her head was already leaning against the car window and her eyes were closed. 

— I want to mean something. — Maybe Naya could put it that way. — I want to inspire people to be who they are, to love each other. Help as many people as I can.

Silence hung in the air except for the radio.

— Do you think that’s possible, Liam?

Honestly, he laughed. Naya held her breath, her head boiling instantly with all the answers he could give.

— Nay, who said that was impossible?

→ TRAINEE LIFE

In 2011, she did an Online Audition for JYP Entertainment and upon confirmation from her parents, she moved to Seoul and began her training in the company in 2012. Naya said in 2017, for an American program that “the first two days in a different country everything is magnificent, but that in the rest of the first week, my world simply collapsed. I was young, I was sixteen, and I was used to a certain culture and being under my parents and my brother’s protection”. She also admitted to had a hard time getting used to the language, despite having a Korean mother. Kwon knew a few words, but it wasn’t enough to survive on the game. “Once I’ve learned all the slangs, it was easier. It definitely was a shocking experience, but looking back, it was great for my personal growth” the singer completed. 

She was considered one of the best trainees in her time, but she explained she always felt at a disadvantage: she never had a lot of Asian physical traits, she had problems with culture and speech, and she needed to debut in a Korean industry. 

Naya was a part of a girl group project called 6MIX together with Twice’s Jihyo, Nayeon, Sana, Jeongyeon and actress Song Yanfei (Cecilia Boey). In 2013, Naya was separated from the group to debut as a solo artist. She also did a lot of photoshoots for magazines.
