Former fellow inmate says Menendez brothers accepted responsibility

A former California state inmate and a self-claimed former gang member tearfully testified Tuesday to support the resentencing of Lyle and Erik Menendez, crediting them for helping him to be released on parole.

Anerae Brown, who claims to have been mentored by the brothers, said Lyle and Erik helped him prepare for his parole hearing.

"Meeting them was the impetus for everything that's happened in my life, including being free," Brown said. "It's a full-circle moment to be able to stand up for them to champion them and speak on their behalf when they did so much to make sure that I could be free.

Brown said he went to "Menendez University" where he learned from the brothers to help and inspire other inmates.

"When it was time for me to do self-help groups and go to anger management, they made sure that I did everything I was supposed to do," he described.

Why 50 years to life, not a lesser sentence?

While Judge Michael Jesic said he believed Lyle and Erik Menendez should be eligible for parole, he said he took seriously District Attorney Nathan Hochman's claims that the brothers were not ready to be released today.

By sentencing 50 years to life, instead of a lesser sentence, the judge has effectively passed on the decision to release the brothers to Gov. Newsom and the state Parole Board.

The LA County District Attorney's Office has not responded to NBCLA's request for comment.

Lyle and Menendez brothers had an emotional reaction to the resentencing ruling, according to one of their attorneys.

Cliff Gardner said while he only had about 20 seconds with the brothers, they "had tears, and they were smiling."

After his older brother addressed the court, Erik Menendez spoke for about seven minutes, expressing his "profound sorrow."

Possibly in an effort to disprove District Attorney Nathan Hochman, who maintained the brothers never fully owned up to the crimes, the older brother said he takes "full responsibility."

"I fired all five rounds at my parents and went back to reload. I lied to police. I lied to my family. I'm truly sorry," he said.

Lyle Menendez spoke about 10 minutes after the hearing, expressing "profound sorrow" for his family.

"I committed an atrocious act against two people who had the right to live, my mom and dad," he said while attending the resentencing hearing Tuesday. "Today, 35 years later, I am deeply ashamed of who I was."

After breaking in tears at times, the older brother went on to explain that when he's released from prison, he's planning to work with the incarcerated community.
