It has been hundreds of years since a human has ever set foot near these woods, the last one had been driven out when it had become clear that he had stayed well past his welcome. Jon remembers how Fay had once mentioned the mortal man, speaking with equal parts disdain and fondness, almost like she had, at one point, been close with the human.

The thought alone seemed mind-boggling, but—perhaps it was why Dark Woman had never appeared to like Fay, and although she respected the priest she had not shown any favorability to her.

A priest of the Temple of Light is something more, a vessel of Light and an apostle to the Old Masters, and Dark Woman had always told him that a priest was what embodied the Master of Light, an existence that no mere human should ever dare think to compare to. The guardians were held in a similar view, but not so reverent as the priests of the Temples were, they were more than what humans could be, but less than what a priest is.

Jon doesn’t stop, doesn’t falter, bounding past the tall doors of the entrance and into the forest, between the trees and thick bushes. It doesn’t take him long to reach a small cliff, and he crouches as he slides up the slope, keeping his footsteps light, barely heard in the silent hush in the stillness of the forest.

Stopping near the edge, he peeks up and over the hedge, his fingers curling tightly as he holds the hilt of his sword, ready to draw it out quickly if things get out of hand. He narrows his eyes, sweeping a look over the small-scale group of armored men settling in a clear space, he watches attentively as he moves his hand to hold the sheath of his sword, reaching to grab the hilt with his other with a vice grip.

What I think the undersea would be like! Feel free to nitpick what you believe, or just completely ignore this, but I feel like I need to flesh out what I think the undersea would be like before I could understand Gillion more? If that makes sense? Neway this is just me writing it all down (this would technically be part 7 I think?)

Life:

The undersea is very cold, so the people there have a lot more fat tissue to conserve heat better

All Tritons have tails

It wasn't necessarily only Tritons that lived in the Trench, it was a lot of different creatures, but Tritons were among the few humanoids because of the water pressure

Most of the time their vision is in black and white due to it being so dark, but when they move into areas that are well lit (like closer to the surface, or the palace) their vision will see the same light spectrum as humans

There is no natural plant life as they are too deep for the plants to photosynthesize. There are synthetic farms though where things such as kelp and...whatever other plants they eat I can't remember

They grow a lot of synthetic coral and seaweed, as they will make their clothes out of mainly these

There are quite a few underwater caves where air pockets are formed, lower classes tend to live there

Blue is the primary color of triton, though it is not uncommon to see those that are green, brown, red, or even semi-transparent. It all depends on what area of the sea you are from

A lot of the Tritons that live in the Trench posses some bioluminescent aspect of themselves. Most commonly it will be just the eyes, but it isn't uncommon to see someone with glowing markings or coral

Depending on what area of the sea they are at the bioluminescence is either very cool (😎) or a target for predators, so they must be careful when traveling

In the Trench tho it's cool (😎) and the more you have the better

I think I said in a prev post that this would be like the twilight zone but I take it back. This would be more accurately at the same level as the challenger deep

There are underwater volcanos and vents, the vents are largely located outside the city bounds and don't cause too much of an issue. There are a couple of volcanos scattered about, but there are no buildings near them. It's almost treated like a park in that way? They use magic to keep them from erupting tho/diverting the lava how they want

Culture:

They tend to wear a lot of loose flowing clothing with skin tight layers underneath

Those of less wealth will be seen wearing a lot of warmer colors (red's, yellows, oranges, and pinks) while those in wealthier districts will wear cold colors (blues, greens, and purples)

High positioned workers will often wear neutral colors, normally on the darker side unless they work directly under/with the elders (in which case they would wear white for maximum visibility)

Guards and the like would wear a lot of darker colors but have bright accents depending on rank

The architecture tends to follow a mix between Classical (Greek and Roman), Brutalist, and rock-cut.

Most living areas are inlaid in the walls of the trenches with the "buildings" within the Trench itself will show a lot of the anti-gravity stacked blocks that Brutalist architecture favors. When they get unstable the buildings will be supported with detailed columns made of stone

I said "buildings" in that ^ cuz I imagine it more of an open bazar but stacked up. Each has a little tent roof gazebo thing but on top of that is another. These are normally carved out of one big price of stone rather than being made up of a lot of smaller tent structures that are then attached (though it is getting increasingly common)

These can have curtains- normally made out braided seaweed or smth of the like- in order to close them off, but are typically left open. It is more common for “higher class” shops to have these curtains tho

Most buildings don't have doors or window coverings unless they are closer to the border of the trench or the palace. Instead they would have beaded curtain type things that are usually passed down in families. You will normally only see one per home that covers the front entrance. Smaller versions are used to cover windows if they live closer to the borders of the Trench (to keep out other creatures)

The only place with a wooden door is the palace. The front door is made from an old ship that somehow sunk all the way down there a long time ago. It requires a lot of maintenance and magic to keep it in shape, but it is the sturdiest thing they have besides rock (and no one feels like pushing a rock out of the way everytime they enter/exit the palace)

The clothes are mainly made of seaweed, specifically brown algae, then dyed different colors. This is achieved by harvesting the color from different coral in a multitude of different ways. For some it means drying them up then grounding them into powder and combining it with water, and others it means making it a paste directly after harvesting and applying it to the clothing.

They make most of their armor out of metal, but there isn't a lot in the undersea, so they have to conserve it and use it wisely. If ur armor it damaged or smth then fix it urself or good luck

Metal is very highly valued because of its rarity.

The palace is a focal point of the city, being located half within an air pocket and being the closest structure to any of the volcanos. The palace is huge, and mainly carved out of stone like the other buildings, but some walls are completely comprised of coral, shells, or plant life that is either compresses or grown thick enough to serve as a barrier.

The palace is mainly underwater, with some of the hallways, guest rooms, and meeting rooms being void of the water. This is due to the air pockets and a little bit of magic to keep it from flowing it.

(tying into the dancing post) the main ballroom is in the direct center of the palace, and is roofless except for a strong barrier of magic reminicient of a forcefield. The room itself is full of water, and is very tall (I'm talking like 10 stories).

There is an underwater training ground located on the right side of the palace if you are looking at it from the front. Imagine a football field and now make it underwater.

There is also a training ground within an air pocket, though the gravity there is much less than that of the surface due to a combination of air pressure and me not wanting to change prior headcanons. Compared to their normal weightlessness tho, this pocket would feel about like our gravity to them
